4 in a row!!!! Nothing can stop this train from rollin as Atlanta United wins 2 more to make it 4 consecutive wins, for the first time since 2019 as the 5 stripes take down Toronto FC and DC United. With their recent results, ATL currently sit in 8th place in the East, just outside of the playoff line, but with the recent addition of Luiz Araujo into the mix, they look to be a completely different team. Despite back to back games with shaky performances in the second half, Atlanta continues to produce results, and walks away with 6 points this week nonetheless. The boys talk about Pineda and the recent tenure of Rob Valentino and what his role may be on the team going forward, as well as their expectations this week as Nashville pays a visit to Mercedes Benz Stadium here at home. And another one.... Atlanta United is like the DJ Khaled of winless matches after now going 11 straight and continuing to slide in MLS standings following their road loss to once "rival" Orlando City. A game that started with so much promise after Josef Martinez made a big statement just 1 minute into the match with a golazo. Despite having multiple leads throughout the match, Atlanta once again managed to blow a lead in the final 10 minutes of the match. In good news, Tim returns! They also all talk about upcoming matches against Montreal and Columbus Crew. If Atlanta doesn't produce results soon, their chance at salvaging this season diminishes even more. While Tim is taking naps and changing diapers, Dan and Kevin are back to break down all the action this past week as Atlanta United squared off against FC Cincinnati in a 1-1 draw followed by a loss at home this weekend at the hands of the Columbus Crew. While both games see a marked improvement in the level of play for the 5-Stripes, they remain winless through their last 9 matches. The return of Josef Martinez definitely creates a spark, but they'll need a lot more than 1-2 pieces of the puzzle this weekend as they face rivals Orlando City on the road Friday night. Clear Eyes, Full Hearts..... will probably lose. Odds for this Friday's game has opened and according to sportsbettingdime.com, Atlanta United are going in as +280 underdogs. Not a bad payout if you're willing to put up the cash. Orlando is coming off of that 5-0 beat down this past weekend. No matter the outcome, Atlanta will need to figure things out fast if they are expected to compete in this years MLS playoffs. Currently sitting in 10th place in the East, every game counts, particularly against that Orlando Scum. Tim and Kevin are here to bring you a weekly look at their hometown MLS team – Atlanta United FC. This is a big one. Michael Parkhurst's list of accomplishments is a long one - it's one that spans an excellent MLS career (New England Revolution, Columbus Crew, Atlanta United), includes time spent playing in Europe in Denmark's top flight (FC Nordsjaelland) and highlighted by a strong stint with the U.S. Men's National Team. But today, he joins us as a newly announced owner for USL Rhode Island and of course, as a supporter of our mini-pitch project in Central Falls, Rhode Island. We'll discuss all sorts of good stuff, including the lead up to his extensive professional career, which saw Parkhurst grow up playing in Rhode Island prior to leaving for Bradenton, FL for his high school years and eventually going on to play collegiately for Wake Forest University. Throughout the years, he has volunteered for Project GOAL and was even twice-named MLS Humanitarian of the Year. As you know may remember, participation in Project GOAL is a common theme of our Rhode Island mini-pitch project, as other mentors of the program include Jeff Larentowicz, currently of Atlanta United and formerly of the New England Revolution and Brown University, Providence College star Julian Gressel, currently of D.C. United, plus other current New England Revolution mainstay, Scott Caldwell and hopefully soon, newcomer, Damian Rivera. As we connect with these players, you'll see that it really brings a project like this full circle and we are SUPER pumped about it.
In this episode of the Designated Player's Podcast, the guys talk about the recent announcement of the MLS 25 greatest! We make our picks for who should be picked out of the 137 players that are available for those spots. Before we make our picks, we analyze the list of 137 and see who we're surprised to see included and who is missing from the list. Certainly some surprising names both present and missing! Finally we make our picks, but as we have done in the past we only look at the 2010's, meaning that we're not considering any seasons before 2010. With those standards in place, each of the hosts make their 25 (in no particular order), and you won't want to miss who we pick, certainly some controversial ones!Let us know your thoughts/comments on the episode! Today, we welcome the New England Revolution's Scott Caldwell to the pod. Scott grew up south of Boston and grew up supporting the Revs while constantly playing soccer with his older siblings. All of his time with the ball paid off, winning a NCAA Championship with Akron before being signed by his hometown squad in the Revs. He has since become a mainstay in the squad and ranks among the team's all-time leaders in appearances. As the youngest of four, Scott was rarely without a practice or person to play with, so when we talked to him about his involvement with Project GOAL and the mini-pitch project, he was all in. As you know by now, participation in Project GOAL is the common theme of this project, as other mentors of the program include Jeff Larentowicz, currently of Atlanta United and formerly of the New England Revolution and Brown University, Providence College star Julian Gressel, currently of D.C. United, Rhode Island native and former New England Revolution stud, Michael Parkhurst, plus other current New England Revolution mainstay, Scott Caldwell and newcomer, Damian Rivera. As we connect with each of these players over the coming weeks, you'll see that it really brings a project like this full circle and we are SUPER pumped about it.
Kick It Forward's mini-pitch initiative has now gone national! We welcome D.C. United's Julian Gressel to the pod. Gressel, a top playmaker in the MLS loves to hand out assists and is known throughout the league for his versatility. Gressel came to the United States as a college player, striving to put together an experience that would help him grow as a person and student, as well as an athlete. He landed at Providence College, where the program experienced a strong period of success during his tenure. Gressel also volunteered at Project GOAL, during his time time in Providence in from 2013 to 2017. Participation in Project GOAL is the common theme of this project, as other mentors of the program include Jeff Larentowicz, currently of Atlanta United and formerly of the New England Revolution and Brown University, Rhode Island native and former New England Revolution stud, Michael Parkhurst, plus other current New England Revolution mainstay, Scott Caldwell and newcomer, Damian Rivera. We plan to connect with each of these players over the coming weeks and while all of their stories will be enjoyable, we hope you enjoy hearing about Julian Gressel this week!
Kick It Forward's mini-pitch initiative has now gone national! Frequent contributor to the pod, the evergreen Jeff Larentowicz, joins us on the pod to discuss a mini-pitch project in Central Falls, Rhode Island. Jeff, a Brown University grad and former New England Revolution standout, plus his former teammate and Kick It Forward's own Ben Brackett, volunteered for an awesome non-profit, Project GOAL, during their time in Providence in the 2000s. Participation in Project GOAL is the common theme of this project, as other mentors of the program include D.C. United and Providence College's Julian Gressel, Rhode Island native and former New England Revolution stud, Michael Parkhurst, plus other New England Revolution mainstay, Scott Caldwell and newcomer, Damian Rivera. We plan to connect with each of these players over the coming weeks and while all of their stories will be enjoyable, Rivera's really brings a project like this full circle, as he was a participant in Project GOAL, and we are SUPER pumped about it. So now and our team of Mini-Pitch Maestros has partnered with Project GOAL and the City of Central Falls, Rhode Island to donate a two mini-pitch installation. And the procuring cause would be our friend, Jeff Larentowicz. So back to Jeff, we talk about his playing days growing up, how a mini-pitch might have affected his youth, plus we get the scoop on his top 5-a-side squad from his days with the Brown Bears and the New England Revolution. Enjoy!
After his squad bowed out of the playoffs, frequent contributor, Jeff Larentowicz, was gracious enough to relive the pain of their loss to Toronto FC. We also discuss the other side of the bracket, which saw Seattle beat the regular season's best team, LAFC. We then preview the final, but naturally, we touch on a host of other topics as well.
