POPULARITY
André Benjamin, popularly known as André 3000, is a rapper, singer, songwriter, producer, and actor best known as one half of the Southern hip hop duo Outkast. Described by Rolling Stone as “one of the genre's most gifted lyricists,” André helped redefine Southern rap with classic albums like ATLiens, Aquemini, Stankonia, and the Grammy-winning Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, producing hits such as “Ms. Jackson” and “Hey Ya!” Beyond Outkast, he has contributed to music as a producer and collaborator with artists including Aretha Franklin, John Legend, and Frank Ocean, while also acting in films including Four Brothers and portraying Jimi Hendrix in Jimi: All Is by My Side. In 2023, André released his ambient flute album New Blue Sun, earning three Grammy nominations for Album of the Year, Best Alternative Jazz Album, and Best Instrumental Composition. This year, André released his album 7 Piano Sketches, a short, intimate collection of mostly improvised piano pieces that showcases the artist's continued exploration of instrumental music beyond his hip hop roots. ------ Thank you to the sponsors that fuel our podcast and our team: Squarespace https://squarespace.com/tetra Use code 'TETRA' ------ LMNT Electrolytes https://drinklmnt.com/tetra Use code 'TETRA' ------ Athletic Nicotine https://www.athleticnicotine.com/tetra Use code 'TETRA' ------ Sign up to receive Tetragrammaton Transmissions https://www.tetragrammaton.com/join-newsletter

The boys are back yet again and this time, Josh is fighting the post-concert bug following his MASSIVE bass show in Baltimore last weekend. He tells us all about the acts like Ray Volpe, LAYZ, ATLiens, and of course Excision. To kick off this week's sports talk, the boys begin with a much needed discussion on the temperature of Women's college basketball, and specifically how much of a DAWG Caitlin Clark is. The matchup between Iowa and LSU this week was highly anticipated, and it absolutely did not disappoint. Josh goes into a further explanation on why the star power in this game, as well as the NCAA as a whole, is incredible for the development of women's college basketball. Looking over at the Men's side, the final four of 2024 is officially set, and (shocker, we know) Dante was wrong about a sports take. The Alabama Crimson Tide shove it directly into his face and made the final four, along with one-seeds UConn and Purdue, as well as America's sweetheart DJ Burnes and the #11 seed NC State Wolfpack. The boys give their thoughts on these four outlasting the competition, and why they're so looking forward to these matchups. The Orioles season has finally started, and through one week the O's are 4-2. Despite winning two of three in both series so far, Orioles fans are mad online about Brandon Hyde's lineups (again, shocker). Dante and Josh look at why they think it's silly to have this stance in April, but also why some concerns being voiced are valid. The Houston Texans made a huge splash trade acquiring WR Stefon Diggs from the Buffalo Bills in exchange for a future 2nd round pick on Wednesday, so the boys give their thoughts and why the Texans are doing everything the Ravens should have done. Lastly, the boys wrap up with their latest "what are we listening to" segment, and we send you all into the greatest weekend of your lives. We love and appreciate each and every one of you so much. We can't believe you support us as amazingly as you do every week. Cheers to yall!

The Underground Society Team has been waiting a while for this one and we couldn't be more excited to welcome the masked trio “Hostage Situation” to the show. We have all seen masked DJs before (Mashmello, ATLiens, etc.) but what we haven't seen is a trio of masked artists… until now. And what really sets these guys apart is the genuineness of their friendship. After talking with these guys, we can really tell that their relationship is similar to a brotherhood. In this episode they share with us everything from their arguments, to their workflow and they even tell us countless stories of the craziness that happens to them not only on the road but just their everyday life. They say that the relationship they have is the most important part of making this project successful and I hope that this episode will bring just as much laughter to you as it did for us during recording. Jamison and Blake start their second October episode with a rousing philosophical analysis of the word "spoop" and then we turn our attention to our favorite holidays. Mostly we are avoiding talking about The McPherson Tape because while it nails the found footage aesthetic, it falls flat on its face when it comes to scares and effects. We discuss the shift from footage with context to footage decontextualized for the audience and we pick apart what that shift is so fascinating. It's a fun (and, for us, mercifully short) episode! We hope you will join us. Clip from Mars Attacks. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/flybyfilms/message
B. Cox and J. Owe look back at OutKast's classic third album Aquemini as it turns 25. After the success of their sophomore album, 1996's ATLiens, Andre and Big Boi both had major life events that affected their outlooks and artistry, included breakups and the start of fatherhood. Given more creative license, the group sought to take even more control of the production of their third album. The album was largely self-produced along with contributions from Mr. DJ and their mentors Organized Noize. It featured guest appearances from Raekwon, George Clinton, fellow Dungeon Family members from Goodie Mob, Sleepy Brown, Cool Breeze, Witchdoctor, Big Rube and Erykah Badu. The album explored themes of the duality of the two emcees through their respective Zodiac signs (Big Boi's Aquarius and Andre's Gemini) and how they interpreted the same set of circumstances in everyday life. Both emcees were heavily influenced by music of their predecessors in Motwon and Stax Records as well as progressive rock and soul. The album was backed by three singles, the most successful being the funky, yet controversial "Rosa Parks". It was praised for its intricate and cutting lyricism, storytelling and imagery along with its vivid production. The album received the coveted 5-Mic rating in The Source and has been certified double platinum, cited as the duo's best work and one of the best albums of the decade regardless of region.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comBuy Exclusive The Vault Podcast Merchandise!www.vaultclassicpod.com/storeSupport The Vault Classic Music Reviews on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Show NotesOutKast's "Aquemini Turns 25 | Album Anniversary https://albumism.com/features/outkast-aquemini-album-anniversaryRock & Roll Globe: 'Return of The G': OutKast's 'Aquemini' at 25 https://rockandrollglobe.com/rap/return-of-the-g-outkasts-aquemini-at-25/Rock The Bells: OutKast's 'Aquemini' at 25: A Look Back At One of Music's Greatest Albumshttps://rockthebells.com/articles/outkast-aquemini-25-year-anniversary/Billboard: OutKast "Aquemini Is the Pinnacle of the Duo's Arthttps://www.billboard.com/music/rb-hip-hop/outkast-aquemini-anniversary-8477481/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

It's the end of season three and Nick and Jared are here to take us out in style. We sadly kick things off from where we left last time with the unfortunate passing of Wild N Out/85 South Show cast member DC Young Fly's girlfriend Jacky Oh. Oh passed away (May 31) due to a surgical procedure called a "mommy makeover". The marauders talk and give their condolences to her and discuss if the toxic culture of plastic surgery for women in rap will be a continuous trend due to her passing or if the trend will sadly continue. Next up, frequent OutKast collaborator Sleepy Brown was caught up at LAX (June 13) and told TMZ that the group is over and to not expect any new music from the duo soon. We debate on if it is the end of the legendary Atlanta group and ask if Aquemini or ATLiens is the best album from OutKast since Brown said the former was their best work due to both men flexing their production skills on Aquemini. After that, it's been a dry spell for rap in the first half of 2023. Why? No rap album or single has hit number one on the Billboard Charts so far (as of this episode) and hasn't had this happen since 1993. We ask each other what's going on to have this happen and give our picks on who will be the first to have a number one album and single on the charts. All that, plus more 90s albums Rank'd, album recommendations, shout outs and more!!

Were back with Dem Vinyl Boyz this week and were diving into the debut album of Atlanta's most iconic rap group, OutKast. Their debut album "Southernplayalisticadillacmizik" released April 26, 1994, was largely influential in the Atlanta rap scene and helped distinguish Southern hip hop as a credible hip hop scene during East Coast and West Coast hip hop's market dominance at the time. "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" incorporates analog elements such as Southern-styled guitar licks, languid soul melodies, mellow 1970s funk grooves, digital hip hop production elements such as programmed snare beats, booty bass elements, including Roland TR-808 clave rhythms, and old school hip hop elements, including E-mu SP-1200-styled drums and turntable scratches. Wanting to make a statement about urban life as an African American in South Atlanta, OutKast wrote and recorded the album as teenagers and addressed coming of age themes with the album's songs. "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" charted at number 20 on the Billboard 200 and was eventually certified Platinum in the United States, denoting one million copies sold. After the album was certified platinum, LaFace Records gave Outkast more creative control and advanced money for their 1996 follow-up album ATLiens, which some consider to be an all time classic. Vibe Magazine included the album on a 2004 list of "51 Essential Albums "that represent" a generation, a sound, and in many cases, a movement", writing that OutKast, determined the South had something to say, and after emerging from the Dungeon production lab, they said it all, sometimes sang it all—pointedly, funkdafied, and putting on absolutely no East Coast pretense. Classic." Thanks for tuning in to Dem Vinyl Boyz, like and subscribe!! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
We survived Thanksgiving and are back in the studio this week with our friends from Printer's Ale Manufacturing Co. Printer's is located in Carrollton, GA, about 50 miles west of Atlanta. Not a bad trip for ATLiens on a weekend but far enough they don't get as much hype as some of the in town breweries. That's too bad, because they are making some great beers and doing a lot of other cool things in Carrollton. On this visit we introduced their Woodcut Wild series of beers in Kriek, Framboise, and Peche. After brewing, the mash for these heads to Printer's coolship but does get a little punch up with some commercial strains when going into barrels. Oh yeah, they also brew with aged hops grown right at the brewery, and future beers will use fruit from their orchard. Neat. We chat with Specialty Brewer Josh Watterson and owner Greg Smith about the importance of terroir in brewing, something that was previously (mostly) ignored by American brewers. We discuss the Qatar/FIFA World Cup kerfuffle with Budweiser, mall Santas, what's in the pipeline at Printer's, and the size of Batman's mouth. Hope you enjoying this episode! Coming up we'll be talking beer cocktails and the Beer Guys Radio Interfaith Holiday Craft Beer Extravaganza with our Jewish friends from Rainy Day Brewery drops on Dec. 17th. Woot. This week, Ashley M. Jones speaks with Marcus Wicker about a project he began early in the pandemic while looking for sources of calm in books and music. Many of these were space-influenced—OutKast's album ATLiens, Robert Hayden's poem “American Journal”—and Wicker began exploring what an extraterrestrial who lands in Atlanta in 2020 would think of America and the way humans treat one another. We'll hear two poems from this project, “Dear Mothership,” and “How did you learn to speak English?” which appear in Poetry's December 2022 issue. Like much of Wicker's poetry, these pieces incorporate popular culture and music references alongside unflinching observations and exciting wordplay.

Josh "Jett Pakk" George is a father of three, a skater at heart, and a retired muthafuckin' hustla'.In Episode #2 of Badass Records, we wax nostalgic about Led Zeppelin and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, but not for long, as those relics remain but a dusty launchpad into the world of hip-hop, breakdancing, and rap.Today's guest initially tabbed ATLiens by Outkast, but did so with a caveat; the first two Eminem records must not go unremembered or undignified. As we dove into the early work of both of those artists, two things became clear: a) There's no possible way either The Slim Shady LP or The Marshall Mathers LP get made in America today, and b) Outkast may very well have been the last bastion of old-school rap, as only Generation X knew it. That is, times have changed; Eminem's first two records would've likely gotten him cancelled in the version of America we know as 2022. As for Outkast, let's just say they carried the baton for multiple legs of the marathon, and when they got to the handoff point, there was no one there to meet them. This episode with J.P.G. was a wild one. Please give a listen or a view. Ya' betta' ax somebody.
