Associations of Dispositional Mindfulness with Obesity and Central Adiposity: The New England Family StudyIn this episode, Dr. Jud Brewer and colleagues examine how dispositional mindfulness—the ability to nonjudgmentally attend to one's mental and physical experiences—relates to obesity and central adiposity. Drawing on findings from the New England Family Study, they explore associations between mindfulness levels and body composition, including android fat mass and android/gynoid fat mass ratio. Discover how mindfulness might influence long-term self-regulation and lifestyle choices, potentially offering a novel pathway for obesity prevention and intervention. This research highlights the importance of integrating psychological and behavioral insights into public health strategies for addressing obesity.Full Reference:Loucks, E. B., Britton, W. Between the 1850s and 1930s, before playhouses for children reached the mainstream, they were often fully functional cottages designed by well-known architects for British royalty, American industrialists, and Hollywood stars. Recognizing the playhouse in this era as a stage for the purposeful performance of upper-class identity, Abigail A. Van Slyck illuminates their role as carefully planned architectural manifestations of adult concerns, from Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's Swiss Cottage (1853) to the children's cottage on the grounds of Cornelius Vanderbilt's Newport mansion (1886) to the glass-block playhouse given to Shirley Temple in 1936, and many more in between. Here, Van Slyck is joined in conversation with Annmarie Adams, Marta Gutman, and Kate Solomonson.Abigail A. Van Slyck is the Dayton Professor Emeritus of Art History at Connecticut College and author of Playhouses and Privilege: The Architecture of Elite Childhood; A Manufactured Wilderness: Summer Camps and the Shaping of American Youth, 1890-1960; and Free to All: Carnegie Libraries and American Culture, 1890-1920.Annmarie Adams is an architectural historian at McGill University in Montreal. Adams is author of Medicine by Design: The Architect and the Modern Hospital, 1893-1943; Architecture in the Family Way: Doctors, Houses, and Women, 1870-1900; and coauthor of Designing Women: Gender and the Architectural Profession.Marta Gutman is dean and professor in the Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture at the City College of New York. Gutman is author of A City for Children: Women, Architecture, and the Charitable Landscapes of Oakland, 1850-1950.Kate Solomonson is architectural historian and professor emeritus in the Department of Architecture at the University of Minnesota. Episode NotesThis episode of Beneath the Surface features a discussion about the proposed Kerr-Sulphurets-Mitchell (KSM) mine in northern British Columbia. If completed, the KSM mine would become one of the world's largest gold-copper mines, threatening critical river systems and the communities that depend on them.Joining us is Rachel Gutman, a lawyer with Ecojustice, who is part of the legal team challenging the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office's decision to classify the KSM mine as “substantially started.” This designation allows the mine to move forward under an environmental assessment conducted over a decade ago, despite significant changes in environmental laws, science, and our understanding of climate risks.Rachel breaks down what “substantially started” means, why this case matters, and what a legal victory could mean for environmental protection and Indigenous rights in British Columbia.Learn more about:EcojusticeSkeenaWildSoutheast Alaska Indigenous Transboundary Commission

And to uh "celebrate" we have chosen to put together a one-hour-and-forty-five-minute episode on Dan Gutman's 1996 book The Kid Who Ran For President, a book that is pretty wild and only made wilder by Scholastic's characteristic late-00s-early-10s stealth updates that "modernize" the text while leaving everything about the story's context totally unchanged. Our theme music was composed by Nick Lerangis.Follow @overduepod on Instagram and BlueskyAdvertise on OverdueSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Karen Read, a 44-year-old woman from Mansfield, Massachusetts, who is accused of second-degree murder in the death of her boyfriend, John O'Keefe, broke her silence in a never-before-seen interview aired on ABC's *20/20* on Friday. In the interview, Read spoke at length about the night O'Keefe, a Boston police officer, was found dead in a snowbank outside a home in Canton after a night of drinking at two local bars. Read, whose first trial ended in a mistrial in July, recounted the moment she discovered O'Keefe's body on the morning of January 29, 2022. “As you come down Fairview, there's a bit of a decline, and it curves to the left, and my eyes are peeled, and I said, ‘He's right [expletive] there,'” she told *20/20*. Read jumped out of the car and found O'Keefe on the ground with injuries, including two black eyes. “His eyes were shut, and he had spots of blood in different areas on his face, and he was still — not stiff, but still,” she said. O'Keefe was not dressed for the blizzard conditions that night, which raised further questions during the trial about the circumstances leading to his death. The prosecution claims Read and O'Keefe had been fighting and that she struck him with her SUV after leaving a party. "Would you say that you were angry with John that night?" *20/20* host Matt Gutman asked. "Yes," Read admitted. However, the defense argues that O'Keefe was beaten up and dragged outside after an altercation in the basement of fellow officer Brian Albert's home. The defense contends that O'Keefe's injuries were inconsistent with being hit by a car. They allege that O'Keefe was beaten and bitten by a dog inside the house before being left outside to die. Read went on to suggest a cover-up involving other officers present at the scene, telling Gutman, “Because he's dead,” when asked why anyone would want to conceal the truth. Prosecutors have faced several setbacks during the case, including a mix-up involving surveillance footage and a Massachusetts State Police trooper being suspended after inappropriate text messages surfaced. Despite these issues, the prosecution is moving forward with a retrial set for January 27, 2025. Judge Beverly Cannone recently denied Read's request to dismiss the second-degree murder charge and another charge, signaling that the case will proceed. In addition to the criminal charges, O'Keefe's family has filed a civil lawsuit against Read and the two bars where the couple had been drinking that night. The family argues that Read's defense has “outrageously created a false narrative” about O'Keefe's death and seeks damages for both compensatory and punitive losses. O'Keefe's cousin, Renay, expressed the family's grief during the *20/20* interview. “He was lost in this whole circus. And I think none of us want him to be lost. I think that's the saddest part of this whole situation, that he's not remembered as who he is and who he was during this whole thing,” she said. As both sides prepare for the retrial, the case continues to captivate public attention, with many eagerly awaiting the outcome. For now, the legal proceedings are moving forward, and the civil lawsuit will likely follow after the criminal trial concludes. #KarenRead #JohnOKeefe #20/20Interview #SecondDegreeMurder #BostonPolice #CantonMassachusetts #TrueCrime Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Dr. Gutman is a board-certified pediatrician, and just finished a fellowship in adolescent medicine at Cohen Children's Medical Center. She will be an adolescent medicine attending at Columbia University Medical Center in August. Her clinical interests include eating disorders, pediatric gynecology and promoting healthy habits in teenagers. Her research focuses on the change in the quality and outcome of eating disorders on patients that presented during the Covid-19 pandemic. Dr. Gutman served for 2 years as the co-chair of JOWMA's Teen Health Committee, and continues to stay active on the committee. Dr. Gutman originally earned her Bachelors of Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she majored in English literature. She completed post baccalaureate premedical program and went to medical school at Tel Aviv University. She then went to Jacobi Medical Center for a residency in pediatrics, where her research focused on sickle cell disease—back in those days, she believed she would specialize in pediatric hematology/oncology. She quickly knew it was the field for her. _________________________________________________ This week's episode is sponsored by Toveedo! The Jewish videos your kids love, all in one happy place. Due to an unexpected pit stop, the crew discover they have some time on their hands. The Cap'n naturally starts drinking (to excess), Lungz reflects on his formative years (bleak as they were), Zach plays the slot machines (he thinks), and Gutman finally reveals the shocking truth as to why she left the pilot corp.
The Cap'n devises a scheme to earn much-needed credits while the Computer threatens certain crew members. Zach claims a medical exemption for wearing pants, and Gutman experiences existential ennui. Lungz learns his bunk is not as private as believed.
Though relieved to be finally heading home, the crew must contend with the crippling monotony of the long journey. Thankfully, a distress call provides a much needed distraction, but not without some risk. Also, the Computer accuses Gutman of dishonesty, and Zack reveals the secret to his supple skin.
The Gutman family travel across the world to spread hope to teenage kids that have trouble fitting into the mold. I met them in Los Angeles where my friend had made their acquaintance and learned the Gutman family live in a RV. Rabbi Aryeh Mordechai Gutman -- this gentle soul -- was interested to talk with his family, as he always does, about his journeys across life.
One of very few positive outcomes of this war is that the ongoing debate surrounding the participation of female soldiers in combat has been decisively answered. Women are, as the IDF's Chief of Staff - Herzi Halevi - has said on multiple occasions, an integral part of the military effort. They serve in tanks and in field intelligence posts, as pilots and naval officers, infantry soldiers, engineering specialists, canine handlers, medics and more. In fact, out of the 625 doctors and paramedics operating in Gaza in late December, 73 - more than ten percent - were women. In today's episode we talk to one of them, First Lieutenant Dr. Sharon Gutman Gilor. The end song is Kol Sha'ah Neshika ("Every Hour, A Kiss") by Chava Alberstein. Hosted on Acast.
