The COVID-19 pandemic was a strange time. Loved ones falling sick. Then passing away. The lockdowns. The terror from not knowing who had the virus and who didn't. The social isolation. And the subsequent breakdown of the first layer of trust that guides how a society behaves in public. For immigrants like Maryam Atoyebi, this meant settling down into a new society was hard. 2X harder than it should normally be. I moved in 2021, so I didn't fully experience what it felt like as everyone tried to navigate the new rules for societal interaction. But the little I experienced was emotionally tasking. I can't even begin to imagine what it was like for Maryam and others who moved to a new country about that time.Maryam joined me on The Newcomers Podcast to chat about all the feels while trying to settle down during the pandemic. We also chatted about: * Her biggest mistakes * How to use informational interviews to build your confidence when job hunting and interviewing* Handling the loss of identity that comes with being put into a box when you move to a new society* And intersectionality as a skill set.I'll leave you with this great piece of advice from Maryam: Understand that every piece of advice you get from other immigrants is contextual. It's often coming from a good place, but its colored by their experience, their bias, and their perspective or view of the world. Your job is to apply your context to what you hear. If you've gotten this far, you should probably subscribe.Did you read it?Two months ago, Nelly Kawira shared a hilarious thread on Twitter about all she's learned and achieved since moving to London two years ago.Well, she's published an updated version on The Newcomers, with some great images to boot. EPISODE 4 - A Perfectly Good Wedding - “Alright rookie, settle down”Greetings Super friends! Welcome to Superman & Lois & Pals. I'm Henry Bernstein and alongside me is my favorite super pal, Professor Sam Brody. Confirmed: Unfortunately, the Showrunner has confirmed that Adam Rayner will not be returning as Tal-Rho in Season 4The character's last appearance was at the end of Season 2 when he chose to stay in the Bizarro world.Let's talk about Superman & Lois Season 4, Episode 4 - A Perfectly Good WeddingDirected by:Gregory SmithWritten By:George Kitson and Max KronickThe Apple TV and Imdb description is: The Kents struggle to adjust to their new normal; Lois helps throw Kyle and Chrissy an impromptu wedding that doesn't go as planned.HENRY'S EPISODE NOTES:This should be called “A Perfectly Fine Episode”Lol to the caption saying, “Somber music.” No shit, S&L.Wait this wasn't a dream? He's really back like that?“A Second chance to do more, to be better. And make the most of the time we have on this planet”So Clark has been back for 3 weeks? Nice to see Kyle and Chrissy, but I dunno. I don't care about them anymore now that we have 6 episodes left.Haha Jonathan made a Star Wars reference and Clark loved it, “12 Parsecs.” Amazing that he's so good at flying. Holy shit he just busted right through. This is really fun. I love that their training consists of Movie references. And again I gotta hand it to the effects crew. This show has consistently not looked like a cartoon.“All right rookie, settle down.” - Clark after Jonathan busts Clark for crashing going Mach 5.I'm glad that they're continuing the thread of Jordan being upset about Lois choosing Jonathan. That's a reason to be pissed. Good of Jon to call out Jordan on that stuff too. “Just following your example superboy”Lois: Do you want to talk about….for starters you died. Clark: Everything feels different. Amazing that they can share not feeling secure in their bodies. I love them so much. “What matters is that you're here with me now.” Clark can get drunk! Cheryl Campbell: “Your dad is one of the good ones”Jordan still thinking that Clark and Sam died because of him“I don't have a suit!”- Jon, “You've got a hoodie” - Jordan lolWhoa who's that fire guy?Is Superman's new suit even darker???Dance sequence. Lots of cute shots of Lois and Clark. That's all I care about. Breaking news Superman Returns Superman Lives! This episode was a lot of filler and I honestly think they rushed him back. Stigall has heard it all today. Harris had a "great night" and Trump was a disaster! "What's wrong with Trump?" "He didn't prepare! He lost!" Ok, if that's how you feel today there's no need to listen to the show. In fact, it's best you don't because it will just make you mad. Unless you're open to someone who'll actually challenge conventional wisdom and present real evidence last night wasn't what you're being told or maybe feel it was. Trump campaign advisor Tim Murtaugh brings more encouraging news you really should hear on a day you may be hanging your head about last night. Plus, today is the 23rd anniversary of 9/11 and it's a thrill to have the legendary Lee Greenwood on the show to discuss one of the most patriotic hit songs in history and how he's been part of presidential campaigns for 40 years singing it. -For more info visit the official website: https://chrisstigall.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/chrisstigallshow/Twitter: https://twitter.com/ChrisStigallFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/chris.stigall/Listen on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/StigallPodListen on Apple Podcasts: https://bit.ly/StigallShowSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Get ready for another electrifying episode of our podcast as we dive into the latest expansion in Path of Exile: Settlers of Kalguur! Join us for episode #138 on July 7th, 2024, at 11PM GMT, where we'll explore everything this groundbreaking update has to offer. Our hosts will break down the new challenge league, balance improvements, endgame content, and much more. We are excited to be joined by two special guests,  @snoobae8553  , renowned for minmaxing top-end Magic Finding strategies, and  @UncleJay69  , famous for his 0-button AFK builds. In the Settlers of Kalguur Challenge League, you'll assist Kalguuran pioneers in building the town of Kingsmarch and establishing trade routes between Wraeclast and Kalguur. Encounter familiar faces like Dannig, Rog, Tujen, and Gwennen, as they seek your help to gather valuable resources and defend the burgeoning town from looming threats. Learn about the unique resources you'll encounter and the thrilling gameplay mechanics that come with them. One of the most exciting features of this expansion is the introduction of a new trade market system for currency. Faustus, an NPC from the Heist league, will facilitate asynchronous currency trades, making your trading experience more streamlined and efficient. We'll discuss the implications of this new system and how it can revolutionize the economy in Path of Exile. We'll also delve into the significant balance improvements and changes to two Ascendancy Classes: the Gladiator and the newly introduced Warden. The Gladiator's rework brings new skills and mechanics focused on Bleeding, Block, and Retaliation, while the Warden, replacing the Raider Ascendancy, introduces elemental attacks and unique defensive abilities. Additionally, we'll cover the major endgame improvements, such as new encounters in Tier 16 and Tier 17 Maps, updated Blight and Ritual content, and the addition of a 6th Map Device Slot. Discover how these changes will impact your gameplay and strategies in Path of Exile. Path of Exile: Settlers of Kalguur also brings enhancements to console gameplay, with reduced loading times, improved visual fidelity, and optimized performance for next-gen consoles. We'll discuss how these updates enhance the overall experience for console players. To top it off, we'll reveal the new Paladin and Penance Supporter Packs, which include exclusive microtransactions and heaps of points to help you celebrate the release of Settlers of Kalguur in style. Don't miss out on this comprehensive overview of the Settlers of Kalguur expansion. He worked as an assistant editor for volumes 392 and 394 of the Dictionary of Literary Biography and has published in a number of venues both online and in print. Zainab Omaki is likewise a Nonfiction Assistant Editor at the magazine and has writings in Callaloo, The Rumpus, LA Review and elsewhere. Her novel-in-progress has funding both abroad and from the Nebraska Arts Council. Like John, she's a PhD candidate at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Prairie Schooner has a long legacy, stretching back to 1928, making it arguably the country's longest continuous literary magazine. In this episode, the focus is on essays from two recent issues, beginning with “Summer Blues” by Hantian Zhang. For anyone who ever read William Gass's medication, On Being Blue, this will serve as an interesting sequel. The theme or mood is signaled by the Portuguese word “saudale,” a desire for something absent, for the essay is set in Lisbon. In “Holden Caulfield Builds a House” by Andrew Erkkila, the setting jumps to Jersey City and the renovation of a house whose previous owner was a Viet Nam vet who painted the names of fallen colleagues in blood and excrement. Suffice to say, it's a monumental tasks that nearly undoes the couple funding the upgrade. In “On grief, sex, and kidneys,” Afton Montgomery explores surgery's impact on one's psyche and even more identity. Finally, in “On the Move, or Looking to Settle Down,” Maya Marshall makes a road trip as an African-American woman traveling the South, knowing that danger can always lurk and yet mustn't become an excuse for limiting oneself. Still, it's not easy when, for instance, the sight of a dead deer makes her identify with it due to sharing a common color and the risks inherent in motion.
