Yesterday, March 25, 2025, the Cincinnati Reds played an exhibition game against their top prospects at Day Air Ballpark in Dayton, Ohio, kicking off their pre-season preparations for the 2025 MLB season. The game showcased the Reds' mix of emerging talent and established players as they gear up for Opening Day on March 27 against the San Francisco Giants. Matt McLain stole the spotlight early, launching a three-run homer in the second inning to give the Reds a commanding 4-0 lead, thrilling the crowd and signaling his readiness after missing all of 2024 due to injury. Elly De La Cruz also impressed, ripping an opposite-field single, further boosting optimism for the season ahead under new manager Terry Francona. However, the prospects fought back, with Will Benson tying the game at 4-4 with a two-run homer off Chase Petty. While full box scores remain unofficial for this exhibition, posts on X highlighted the Reds' offensive firepower and the prospects' resilience. The game served as a promising tune-up, with fans and analysts eager to see if Cincinnati's young core can translate this energy into a playoff push after a disappointing 77-85 finish in 2024. Richard William Pitino, born September 16, 1982, is an American college basketball coach currently leading the Xavier Musketeers. The son of legendary coach Rick Pitino, Richard has carved his own path in the sport. After graduating from Providence College in 2005 with a history degree, he began his coaching career as an assistant at various schools, including Northeastern, Duquesne, and Louisville, where he worked under his father. Pitino's head coaching journey started at Florida International University (FIU) in 2012, where he turned a struggling team into an 18-14 squad in one season. In 2013, he took over at Minnesota, leading the Golden Gophers to an NIT Championship in 2014 and earning Big Ten Coach of the Year honors in 2017 after a 16-win improvement. Despite an eight-year tenure, he was fired in 2021 following a 14-15 season. Days later, he joined New Mexico, revitalizing the Lobos with a 26-10 record in 2023-24, winning the Mountain West Tournament, and reaching the NCAA Tournament—his fourth as a head coach. Now at Xavier, hired in 2025, Pitino's career record stands at 247-186 (.570). Known for high-pressure defense and roster turnarounds, he continues to build on his father's legacy while establishing his own.

"Actionable goals build. It's a mountain—recovery is a mountain. Think about the stops on that mountain that you need to make to get to the top.”   Millie Paladino had a successful, relatively injury-free collegiate career in running at West Virginia University and then Providence College, where she ran distances from 800 meters to 3,000 meters and was an all-American in the mile.   She turned pro and joined Team New Balance, and in 2021, made the final in the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials in the 5,000 meters. But in the lead-up, a slowly developing injury began worsening, until in 2023 she had extensive surgery to correct a problem called Haglund's deformity, a bony growth on the heel that can damage the Achilles tendon.   Her recovery was longer than anticipated, changing her goals and challenging her spirit. But even on the more difficult days, Millie found ways to show up for her teammates and herself, developing a whole new appreciation for the person she was off the track. She invested in her relationships and even went back to school for urban planning (tune in to her about her cool running-related school project!).   Resources/links: Millie's Instagram Download the video for The Injured Athletes Club Recovery Summit: The Athlete's Toolkit A huge thank you to LEVER Movement, the exclusive sponsor of season 8 of The Injured Athletes Club podcast! For this episode of the podcast I spoke with Craig Holdrege and Ryan Shea of the Nature Institute in Ghent, New York about the theory and practice of a very different way of doing science, informed and inspired by the work of the great German poet, scientist, and statesman, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. In contrast to the reductionist paradigm of science as it is often practiced elsewhere today, the Goethean approach seeks a perspective on nature characterized by wholeness and interconnection through a sensitive and self-aware methodology in which the relationships between the phenomena and the observer are not forgotten. Craig was a visiting instructor at Thoreau College in 2020 and we are very excited to welcome Ryan to Wisconsin as guest instructor this coming spring during our Spring 2025 Metamorphosis Gap Semester.Craig Holdrege is the Nature Institute's director and spearheaded its founding in 1998. His passion is to develop what Goethe called “delicate empiricism” — an approach that learns from nature how to understand nature and is infused with a cautious and critical awareness of how intentions and habits of mind affect human understanding. Craig carries out studies of animals and plants that tell the story of these organisms as dynamic and integrated beings within the larger web of life. He has written many articles and books, including Seeing the Animal Whole—And Why It Matters, Do Frogs Come from Tadpoles? and Thinking Like a Plant. Before co-founding The Nature Institute, Craig was a high school biology teacher in Waldorf Schools, working in Germany for 12 years and then in the U.S. for nine years. Since the early 1990s, Craig has been involved in teacher training. Craig has a Ph.D. in sustainability education from Prescott College in Arizona. He completed a Masters-level, non-degree program in phenomenological science at the Science Research Laboratory at the Goetheanum, Switzerland, and has a B.A. in philosophy from Beloit College.Ryan Shea taught at Providence College for eight years, including courses in philosophy of science, environmental philosophy, and nature writing. He has B.A. and M.A. degrees in philosophy. He brings to his work at The Nature Institute a broad knowledge of ancient philosophical biology (especially Aristotle), the scientific revolution, phenomenology, German idealism, and Goethean qualitative science. Ryan has been interested in Goethean Science since he was a teenager. He began working part-time for The Nature Institute in spring 2023 and is full-time as of September 2024. He is excited to now have the opportunity to develop Goethean practice through research and teaching. He is interested in pursuing the nature of metamorphosis in different realms of the living world, and what it means to read the “book of nature.” Nature Institute: https://www.natureinstitute.org/Metamorphosis Gap Semester - Spring 2025 - https://thoreaucollege.org/metamorphosis-spring/

Emily made the US Olympic team this past summer in the Marathon after placing 2nd at the US Olympic Trials in Orlando in February.  In today's conversation, Emily takes me through the biggest lessons and learnings from her successful career, her years in high school and how she's always fallen back on her love for the sport, her ambitions for the future, and so much more.
