On this episode of Manga Mavericks, we celebrate our first episode of 2019 by talking about our experience reading manga on the new Shonen Jump website and apps and what we think could be improved upon going forward. As well as discuss the two latest new series from the magazine with Ne0;Lation from Tomohide Hirao & Mizuki Yoda and Hell Warden Higuma from Natsuki Hokami! But before any of that, we have a whole lot of news to cover, including a few lists to top off 2018! Topics of discussion also include our complaints about a video game we won't be buying anyway, our thoughts on Japanese fan's taste in DBZ movies, and Japan's most beloved franchise of 2018: The Greatest Showman (okay not really, but it made a lot of money over there for some reason). Be sure to stay tuned for our next episode as we finally round off last year with our annual Best Of Manga podcast! Until then, enjoy! For the entirety of 2018, we have been celebrating the 50th anniversary of Shonen Jump by covering various Jump manga throughout the year, but now it is time. It is time to reveal what we have been planning whilst celebrating the magazine's milestone, an even BIGGER celebration of our beloved anthology! So big that we had to scale back the amount of work we were putting into it, going from a planned multi-part podcast celebration interviewing 10+ individuals from all walks of life, to a collection of whatever interviews were already recorded to release in order to commemorate the English Shonen Jump's transition from digital magazine to full blown subscription service!! On this very special episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum gather a handful of past guests to sit down and talk to them about their experiences with Weekly Shonen Jump, including: Maxy Barnard, Sam Leach, Doctor, and Jeff Ruberg! We cover Shonen Jump from many different facets, from our favorite titles, our reading experiences, and many more memories we've shared with the magazine throughout our lives. Included is also an interview with Jeff Ruberg recorded before the launch of the new Shonen Jump subscription service from Viz, featuring info on the various features on both the website and mobile apps and speculation of where the future of Jump can possibly go from here! Enjoy the episode just in time for the holidays! We'll be back on January 4th, 2019 for our first episode of the new year! We’re back baby! Manga Mavericks has been on a hiatus recently, but we’ve returned to end the year with a bang. That’s right, since 2017 is over, it’s time to look back at the last year of manga and highlight the best of the best. First we’ve got an hour and a half of news highlights from the past three months, giving our thoughts on some of the most important news stories we missed. Except for licensing news, because trying to recap everything Seven Seas has licensed this year would take a whole show in of itself. After that, it’s our best of manga superlative awards, where we gush about our favorite things about manga this year, and reminisce about our favorite moments from the podcast as well. It’s four hours of Manga Mavericks goodness to close out 2017 and begin 2018 strong! PODCAST BREAKDOWN: 00:22 - Intro & Updates! 05:30 - Jump Starts! This was a big year for both the podcast and our personal lives, the latter of which resulting in the former being put on hiatus for the past couple of months. The podcast really grew this year as we tackled excellent topics like “The Future of Shonen Jump” and “The State of Shonen Sunday,” and we had guests from the manga industry on like Annaliese Christman and Jeff Ruberg. Manga Mavericks @ Movies debuted this year giving us a fun outlet to talk about movies with friends like Ethan and Jonathan, the latter of which also joining us for my favorite project we did this year – The Pokemon Adventures retrospectives. Not to mention we launched our Youtube channel early in the year, which finally surpassed the 100 subscriber threshold in November and continues to grow. It’s really incredible just how much we accomplished with the show this year even with our short hiatus, and we think 2018 is going to be an even better year for us. We have lots of ideas and topics for the show set and scheduled, as well as exciting projects we can’t wait to start working on. So there’s a lot to look forward to in 2018! But wait, there’s a way you guys can help make the show better too! By taking our annual year-end survey, you can give us feedback that’ll help us curate the content of our show to reflect what our audience most responds too. We take your suggestions and feedback very seriously, and want to figure out more ways to reach our and interact with you guys, so please leave some responses! Rounding off our My Hero Academia podcast trilogy is this long-awaited Q&A special! We received so many questions for our Manga Fight we couldn't possibly use them all, so we organized this special episode to answer them! Both Jeff Ruberg and Doctor return to give their takes on your questions, and what results is the realization that all podcasters are evil, Stain is best girl, Mineta should make a Spirit Bomb out of sticky balls, and lots of lucrative ideas for ScrewAttack! Before we get to all that we have to cover the news first, but because Colton abandoned the podcast to go to Anime St. Louis to buy cigarettes, I had to find another co-host for the week. Thankfully, that scumbag VLordGTZ just happened to be in the room so I pulled him over, sat him down, and forced him to talk about the latest happenings in the manga industry for fourty-five minutes. We discuss how confusing Yu-Gi-Oh! is now, dance on Fairy Tail's grave, and speculate on the Attack on Titan/Madagascar crossover that is totally definitely going to happen one day. We close off talking about a list of japanese readers' favorite Shonen Jump mangaka. Did MHA's Kohei Horikoshi make the list? Listen and find out! There's been a lot of gloom and doom about One Piece recently. It got taken off Toonami, then it got dumped by Hulu, and now everyone's aflame over whether the Pudding twist was sexist or not. In these trouble times, just remember - One Piece has three times as many volumes in print than the entire population of Japan! It has more graphic novels in circulation than any other comic book in the world. Crazy to think about, isn't it? For all the ups and downs One Piece might go through, no one can deny it's success, and it's indomitable presence in comic book culture worldwide. This week we don't have a discussion, but the Mavericks still manage to go on for about a hour and a half on a ton of news! We cover the March Bookscan list, the latest licenses, and a ton of noteworthy circulation news! We cap off the show covering a list of long-running manga people dropped before their conclusion and the results are...not surprising, but interesting nonetheless! It's a shorter show than usual, but hey, after weeks of three hour long podcasts, we deserve some slack once in a while. Especially since the next couple episodes may very well turn out to be some of our longest yet...
