Kat, Leo, and Bcom discuss the 11th week of the Summer 2019 anime season! Bcom compares the 1986 anime They Were Eleven with its modern counterpart, Astra Lost in Space. The Dumbbell girls celebrate New Years by walking up and ungodly number of steps. The Maidens decide it’s time to protest the oppressive regime at their school, so they can let their freak flags fly! Tanjirou gets the help of some little butterfly girls who help him stretch, train, and breathe in an effort to level up to be an even more effective Demon Slayer. Charce truly becomes Kanata’s right-hand man, in the penultimate episode of Astra Lost in Space, in a manner that causes Leo and Bcom to lose their minds. It turns out Watermelon girl’s watermelon helmet was way more essential than Kat ever expected, and to Bcom’s delight Dr. STONE re-designs it to be an everlasting part of her character design. We wrap up the final episode of Given and discuss how we felt about the way it concluded (or didn’t conclude) its various storylines. Apparently, Smokey the Bear never told the Vikings that “only you can prevent forest fires,” because they find themselves in the middle of a raging inferno. Bcom, Kat, and Leo discuss the 10th week of the Summer 2019 anime season! Bcom kicks things off by reviewing Studio 3Hz’s latest project, Blackfox: a totally decent movie. We propose ethical solutions to Japan’s birthrate issues during Kat’s recap of Dumbbell episode 10, and otherwise generally complain about some dumb developments. The Maidens start pushing the sexual tension to the max as emotions reach their peak in all of their relationships, and they find the confidence to make their moves and experience some crushing rejections. We then get into an extra flamboyant review of Demon Slayer’s latest episode, where the fate of Nezuko is decided. We finally found out who the traitor is in Kanata no Astra, and we start losing our minds at some of the more blatant plot conveniences in the backstory of the show. With the latest episode of Dr. STONE, Kat asks the age-old question…can you f*** a watermelon? We get annoyed at hair-cutting tropes in Given, and uncover a grand conspiracy common to LGBT anime adaptations. Thorkell wreaks havoc on the Danes’ best-laid plans in Vinland Saga, and Canute cannot communicate his feelings. This week’s episode of Demon Slayer was a gigantic info dump introducing the Hashira, and putting poor little Nezuko on trial for being a demon. We also vote on which members of the Hashira we think will bite the dust first. The goals of the Astra crew’s parents are revealed and we also find out that Polina’s not in Kansas anymore. After the break, we return with an electrifying episode of Dr. STONE, where Senku persuades a spy from Tsukasa’s camp to join the Kingdom of Science with using magnet-creation techniques from NASA. Given is actually able to pull off an emotionally moving performance, which saves the show from tanking entirely. In the latest episode of Vinland Saga, the London Bridge is not falling down, because a Viking named Thorkell is fighting on behalf of the English in the latest episode of Vinland Saga. Finally, with Carole and Tuesday, it’s Christmas time at the Mars Grammy awards, and things are quickly going downhill for Angela, as she tries to come to turns with losing everything important in her life.Recorded October 2, 2019. Kat, Leo and Bcom discuss the 8th week of the Summer 2019 anime season! This week the Dumbbell girls climb a haunted mountain and, like meat, it went bad. The Maidens explore how many confessions they can pack into just one episode. Nezuko’s cute shrinking powers beg the question of whether she can grow to the size of a Gundam and stomp all the demons underneath her giant feet. This week’s episode of Astra turns into that one comic panel of Spider-Man pointing at other Spider-Man, as the show begins to embrace the ridiculousness of life. Dr. STONE somehow gets us into an argument about limited antibiotic resistance and superbugs, before arguing even more about whether Suika can keep the watermelon on her head for the entire length of the show with no explanation. Given finally delves into Mafuyu’s tragic backstory, as it sets up for a performance, which will likely determine whether the show sinks or swims. In Vinland Saga, Askeladd teaches us all about how to win friends and influence people, using the knowledge that everyone around him is a slave to something, which makes it possible to use them to fulfil his own ambitions. Finally, the Grammy Awards still exist on Mars and are still boring and irrelevant, but luckily rapper Denzel Curry is here to give the show some much-needed edginess.Recorded September 26, 2019. Bcom, Kat, and Leo are here to break down the 7th week of the Summer 2019 anime season! We kick off the podcast with some thoughts from Bcom and Kat about Trigger’s latest film, PROMARE. In this week’s anime, Dumbbell has become an idol show, and Kat is not amused. The Maidens have a very jiggly pillow fight to express their growing frustration with each other. After Tanjiro’s huge battle with Rui, Demon Slayer starts delving into the tragic backstory of the pretend spider family that Rui has built around himself. Then we get into the first of our midseason replacements, with a big recap of Astra Lost in Space and discussion of episode 7, where we try to puzzle out who the traitor could be. Dr. STONE begins recruiting the help of some villagers to build his Kingdom of Science into a force to be reckoned with. Leo takes a nap through Kat’s excellent review of episode 7 of Given, which is getting better with each passing episode. Bcom recaps episodes 4-6 of Vinland Saga before jumping into episode 7, where Askeladd’s Vikings use some badass tactics to plunder a Frankish stronghold, and Thorfinn earns another duel to avenge his father’s death by Naruto-running all over the battlefield. Last week we sadly lost two influential mangaka whose works have become cultural institutions. Kazuhiko Kato, more popularly known by his pen name Monkey Punch, and Kazuo Koike have both passed away due to pneumonia. It’s bittersweet that Koike’s final tweets were reminiscing on his friend and rival, as both of their iconic series competed for popularity in Weekly Manga Action over nearly 50 years ago. His very last internet words were “I’m really going to miss him,” and we at Manga Mavericks feel the same about both creators. Lupin the Third is a franchise we both adore and one that has endured and entertained generations. Many of Koike’s works, including Lone Wolf and Cub, are absolute classics, and his legacy and influence on the medium can be seen through the numerous talents he helped nurture like Rumiko Takahashi and Tetsuo Hara, among many others. Both creators’ influence extend beyond manga, having even influence film directors abroad like Steven Spielberg and Quentin Tarantino through film adaptations of their works. So while we mourn their passing, we also find solace that their life’s work and legacy will continue to live on. Though we’d like to spend more time eulogizing them, there’s been a lot of other news in the manga world we need to talk about. There’re new series, new licenses, and exciting opportunities for aspiring mangaka to break-in to the industry! Plus, we’ve got two new Jump Starts to talk about! Last week we sadly lost two influential mangaka whose works have become cultural institutions. Kazuhiko Kato, more popularly known by his pen name Monkey Punch, and Kazuo Koike have both passed away due to pneumonia. It’s bittersweet that Koike’s final tweets were reminiscing on his friend and rival, as both of their iconic series competed for popularity in Weekly Manga Action over nearly 50 years ago. His very last internet words were “I’m really going to miss him,” and we at Manga Mavericks feel the same about both creators. Lupin the Third is a franchise we both adore and one that has endured and entertained generations. Many of Koike’s works, including Lone Wolf and Cub, are absolute classics, and his legacy and influence on the medium can be seen through the numerous talents he helped nurture like Rumiko Takahashi and Tetsuo Hara, among many others. Both creators’ influence extend beyond manga, having even influence film directors abroad like Steven Spielberg and Quentin Tarantino through film adaptations of their works. So while we mourn their passing, we also find solace that their life’s work and legacy will continue to live on. Though we’d like to spend more time eulogizing them, there’s been a lot of other news in the manga world we need to talk about. There’re new series, new licenses, and exciting opportunities for aspiring mangaka to break-in to the industry! Plus, we’ve got two new Jump Starts to talk about! Manga Mavericks @ Movies debuted this year giving us a fun outlet to talk about movies with friends like Ethan and Jonathan, the latter of which also joining us for my favorite project we did this year – The Pokemon Adventures retrospectives. Not to mention we launched our Youtube channel early in the year, which finally surpassed the 100 subscriber threshold in November and continues to grow. It’s really incredible just how much we accomplished with the show this year even with our short hiatus, and we think 2018 is going to be an even better year for us. We have lots of ideas and topics for the show set and scheduled, as well as exciting projects we can’t wait to start working on. So there’s a lot to look forward to in 2018! It's kinda crazy that Pokemon is more popular than ever internationally twenty years later. Pokemon Go was a phenomenon, the hype for Sun & Moon grows more and more like an Exeggutor every day, and there was a huge uproar over Ash losing his match with Alain in the finals of the Kalos League in the anime. With the games, anime, and manga all better than ever, this has been a great year to be a Pokemon fan! Heck, with this much vitality, Pokemon is sure to be going strong another 20 years! On that note, screw the Olympic Committee's reasoning for not including Pokemon among the anime and gaming franchises representing Japan in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. So apparently Pokemon is not as popular internationally as Yo-Kai Watch? Suuuurrreee.... While some franchises like Pokemon will never die, most series are finite. That's especially true of manga. It's unbelievable just how many long-running and popular titles have ended this year. Just this month alone, there's been Nisekoi, Billy Bat, Genshiken, and as of this week, Bleach. It feels surreal to live in a world where Bleach is over. It ran for fifteen years, and was among the formative series for an entire generation of anime and manga fans. Once a part of the so-called "Big 3," it had a dramatic fall from grace about half-way into it's run, and never recovered afterwards. Opinions on the series vary, but there's no denying it left an impact in the community and the industry. It's unlikely to continue on as a franchise like Naruto has, but it's unlikely to be forgotten all the same, and sure to be a subject of heated debates between shonen fans for many years to come. But we've got more to talk about this week than the ending of Bleach!
