Next week, the field of candidates vying to be the next mayor of Salt Lake City will be trimmed from eight to two as voters cast their ballots in the city’s primary election. Recent polling by The Salt Lake Tribune and Hinckley Institute of Politics showed a significant number of voters had not yet decided who to support. And the presumed frontrunner, former state Sen. Jim Dabakis, held a relatively narrow lead ahead of a still-competitive slate of hopefuls looking to secure a spot on the general election ballot. On today’s episode of “Trib Talk," host Benjamin Wood chats with government reporter Taylor Stevens about the state of the mayor’s race ahead of Tuesday’s primary, and visits a neighborhood party on the city’s west side to see what voters are thinking about the candidates and their campaigns. Ferguson, Cleveland, Baltimore...Utah. Officer-involved shootings and incidents continue to happen and to concern us, and Utah has not been immune to these issues. According to the Salt Lake Tribune, the first three homicides of 2015 were officer-involved shootings, and the Deseret News reports that so far this year police in Utah have shot and killed four people and wounded at least one. The Utah Legislature is conducting meetings (expected to continue through the summer) on police training, focusing on use of force and interactions with the mentally ill. Today on AU, we're joined by state Senator Jim Dabakis, Marina Lowe, ACLU Utah Legislative & Policy Counsel, and Salt Lake City Deputy Chief of Police, Krista Dunn.

The grandson of Greek immigrants, Jim Dabakis moved to Utah when he was 17 to attend school at Brigham Young University. After college, Jim worked for 13 years as a Radio and TV talk-show host. He became known as the"Voice of Utah Democrats" as he defended the Party’s values against the continual onslaught of the Ronald Reagan-era Republicans. Jim also began his own company in the art dealership world, and has worked primarily with Russia for the past 20 years. During that time he also founded the Jim Dabakis Educational Foundation which has helped bright students from all over the world continue their education in the United States. He is also one of the original founders of both Equality Utah and The Utah Pride Center. Never one to stay uninvolved, before becoming Chair, he had been active in helping many of our Elected Democrats in this state achieve office. This is his Mormon story.
