Colin Gray is on trial for second-degree murder — not because he pulled a trigger, but because prosecutors say he put the weapon in his son's hands and ignored every warning that followed. His son, Colt Gray, allegedly walked into Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia on September 4, 2024 and opened fire, killing two students and two teachers and wounding nine others in the deadliest school shooting in Georgia history. Colin Gray faces 29 felony counts and up to 180 years in prison.The prosecution's case is built on a timeline that is difficult to look away from. An FBI-flagged threat investigation in 2023 where deputies warned Colin to keep his son away from firearms. A Christmas gift months later — a Sig Sauer M400 AR-style rifle, along with ammunition, tactical accessories, and unrestricted bedroom access. A shrine to the Parkland shooter found in the teenager's room. A counseling request where Colin described his son as volatile and angry. A text from Colt to his father weeks before the shooting that allegedly read: "Whenever something happens, just know the blood is on your hands." And when law enforcement arrived at Colin's home after the shooting, prosecutors say he met them in the garage and said two words without being prompted: "I knew it."This case follows the landmark Crumbley convictions in Michigan — the first time parents were held criminally responsible for a mass school shooting carried out by their child. But Colin Gray's charges go further. Second-degree murder, not manslaughter. A legal theory built on cruelty to children resulting in death. If a Georgia jury convicts, it won't just continue the Crumbley precedent — it will fundamentally escalate it. Als Kind fand ich es unfassbar spannend zu entdecken, dass Teppiche von unten ihr Muster nicht zeigen.  Vielleicht ist das mit Gott auch so. Vielleicht sehen wir hier nur seine Rückseite. Ich find das nicht schlimm, dann habe ich ja noch Hoffnung, dass es mir gelingen kann, die Vorderseite zu entdecken. Aber ich will nicht glauben, dass das erst am Ende meiner Tage passiert. Das ist mir zu wenig Zuspruch von einem Gott, dessen Reich bereits angebrochen ist. Ein Gott, der bereits mitten unter uns ist.  Wer weiß, wer entschieden hat, dass ich den Teppich nur von unten betrachte. In this episode of the Crisis Lab Podcast, host Kyle King sits down with Brenden Winder (Christchurch City Council). They dissect the fourteen year recovery journey following the Christchurch earthquakes. What it reveals: the dangerous illusion of short term success in emergency management. Award winners included Dr. William “Bill” Russell (Legacy Business Leader), Alicia Cole of Lillies Boutique (Certification Cohort Member), and Berthine Crèvecoeur West of Westbridge Solutions (Accelerator Cohort Member). The event also celebrated the 2025 Small Business Impact Institute graduates, seven of whom earned supply-chain certifications. STORY 2: Lawmakers seek Lottery money for need-based college scholarships Georgia’s public colleges hit record enrollment this fall, with over 382,000 students, but a bipartisan Senate committee says too many are still being left behind. The HOPE Scholarship, funded by the state lottery, has helped over 2 million students since 1993, but it’s merit-based—requiring a 3.0 GPA—and doesn’t account for financial need. For low-income students juggling work and school, losing HOPE often means dropping out entirely. The committee is pushing for a $126 million need-based aid program, funded by the lottery’s $1.7 billion reserves. But not everyone’s on board. Critics argue need-based aid feels like “social welfare,” despite warnings of a growing “brain drain” as students leave Georgia for better financial aid elsewhere. Gov. Brian Kemp praised HOPE’s legacy this week, but advocates say Georgia must do more to keep talented students in-state. Walmart, teaming up with Wing, announced Wednesday that drone deliveries are now a thing in metro Atlanta—just in time for last-minute shoppers. Need wrapping paper? Holiday meal ingredients? A stocking stuffer you forgot? These 12-pound drones, zipping along at 60 mph, can deliver in five minutes if you’re within six miles. Health-care advocates are sounding the alarm: insurance rates on the government marketplace are set to spike next year. Why? Insurers blame federal budget cuts and the end of COVID-era tax credits, according to Anthony Wright of Families USA. And who’s hit hardest? Folks without job-based coverage—think restaurant servers, gig workers, barbers, plumbers, and other self-employed Georgians. The numbers are grim. KFF says half a million could lose coverage, while Georgians for a Healthy Future estimates 340,000, with rates jumping 75%. STORY 2: Paraglider hospitalized after crash at Barrow County Airport  A paraglider crashed at Barrow County Airport in Winder on Thursday afternoon and was rushed to the hospital, according to the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office. Details? Pretty scarce. Deputies and firefighters got the call around 1:04 p.m. about the crash. When they arrived, the man was breathing but unresponsive—scary stuff. He’s now in the hospital, and the FAA is stepping in to investigate what went wrong. Sheriff Jud Smith praised the quick-thinking citizen who called 911, saying their actions helped first responders get there fast. STORY 3: Peach Bowl and College Football Playoff Foundation team up for makeover at Lilburn Middle School Lilburn Middle School just got a serious upgrade, thanks to Peach Bowl, Inc. and the College Football Playoff Foundation. As part of their Extra Yard Makeover initiative, the school’s STEM lab was completely renovated—and unveiled Tuesday during a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Students and teachers got their first look at the revamped space, and let’s just say, jaws dropped. The $200,000 partnership has already transformed eight schools, including Hope Hill Elementary and North Clayton Middle. Oh, and one lucky teacher? Surprised with $1,000 for classroom projects. STORY 5: Valdosta State president leaving for California post Valdosta State University President Richard Carvajal is heading west. Carvajal stepped in during a rocky time in 2017—he was the seventh president in just eight years—and brought much-needed stability. At 18, she won Miss Tattnall County and competed in Miss Georgia, but after that? She figured her pageant days were over. Life moved on.
