This shift compelled both sides to become long-term custodians of captives. Philosopher John Locke codified this in Carolina's founding documents, granting freemen absolute authority over black slaves regardless of their religion. This "fictional" racial category was reinforced by early slave codes in Virginia to ensure the perpetual growth of plantation profits. Despite this, the domestic slave trade treated two million people as speculative property between 1820 and 1860. This human trafficking machine was fueled by planters chasing high-margin crops like cotton while maintaining a delusion of lifelong stability. Field Order 15 initially provided a path for land reform by settling refugees on abandoned plantations, but the policy was reversed by Andrew Johnson after Lincoln's assassination. Planters regained their property, and formerly enslaved families were evicted and forced into exploitative labor contracts, representing a tragic "lost opportunity" for reconstruction. Although the university initially claimed the remains were European, DNA analysis and archival research proved they were of African descent. This attempt to "re-bury the history" illustrates the ongoing need to escape the shadow of the great house by embracing the truth of the past. Roodargues for an anti-plantation counterculture that values human relationships over "breakneck exploitation." Rabbi Yehuda Winder, previously a Rebbi at the Bais Medrash Chofetz Chaim in Israel, returned to America and found himself presented with an opportunity at Yeshiva Tiferes Moshe: a position as a first-grade Rebbi. He learned that the curriculum being used was one in which students memorized phrases and repeated what their Rebbe said. He believed that there must be a different way, one that focused on fostering skills and comprehension regarding the origins of words, and this is how Lshon Hatorah was born. Rabbi Winder's method invovled students learning the “shoresh” or root of a word separately and then understand how prefixes and suffixes could modify its meaning. Each of the words came directly from the Torah which provided students with a solid foundation of language skills. Gradually, students progressed with learning Hebrew more easily through each grade level. Rabbi Winder's method has become standard in many Jewish schools. Jazz Forum Arts in Westchester County, New York is a premier, highly successful nonprofit jazz organization with a rich history. Now, after 40 years of artistic excellence, a new era will be ushered in when Founder and Executive Director Mark Morganelli and Chief Operating Officer Ellen Prior retire on July 1st of this year.  This dynamic duo leaves behind an amazing legacy that includes hosting 300-plus music performances annually at its Jazz Forum Club in Tarrytown, New York, multiple free outdoor concert series, and award-winning jazz educational programs.      Mark Morganelli, a jazz trumpeter and producer, has been a major presence in the New York City and regional jazz scene since 1979, when he opened his first Jazz Forum loft club in Greenwich Village. Ellen Prior, Mark's wife, has been a presence at JFA events since its earliest days, and formally joined the leadership team in 2015.  With their retirement in the offing, the mantle of leadership is being passed on to Darrian Douglas and Clara Winder.   Douglas, an accomplished jazz drummer for the past 20 years, is an educator, and arts leader, who has served as Director of Programs for Jazz Forum Arts since July 2025.  Previously, he served as Executive Director and Co-Founder of Second Line Arts Collective in New Orleans. Winder, currently Marketing Director and a core member of the JFA team for nearly a decade, will become Chief Operating Officer in July 2026, overseeing the Jazz Forum club operations, marketing, audience development, and internal systems that support the organization's continued growth.  My conversation with the affable Mark Morganelli and the engaging Ellen Prior unfolds the fascinating story behind the Jazz Forum Arts.

From the impact of under-fueling (REDs) to the surprising connection between jaw tension and the pelvic floor, this episode provides a roadmap for athletes and non-athletes alike to "zoom out" and find holistic strategies for recovery and resilience. Takeaways: The Hypermobility Paradox: People with lax connective tissue often have hyperactive pelvic floor muscles that work overtime to provide the stability their ligaments cannot. Prevalence in Performance: Around 34% of professional dancers and 40% of aerialists report urinary leakage, even those who have never been pregnant or given birth. The "Zoom Out" Method: Pelvic health is influenced by the entire body; issues in the jaw (TMJ), neck, and hips can directly contribute to pelvic floor tension and pain. REDs and Incontinence: Low energy availability (under-fueling) can weaken skeletal muscles, including the pelvic floor, and is now recognized as a health consequence of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport. Autonomic Influence: The pelvic floor is highly responsive to the nervous system; conditions like POTS can trigger bladder urgency and disrupt coordination.
