In this episode of the Crisis Lab Podcast, host Kyle King sits down with Brenden Winder (Christchurch City Council). They dissect the fourteen year recovery journey following the Christchurch earthquakes. What it reveals: the dangerous illusion of short term success in emergency management. It also exposes the silent erosion of institutional memory. Between the 2010 earthquake (where systems appeared to hold) and the devastating 2011 event that claimed 185 lives, Christchurch learned a hard lesson. Operational confidence can mask systemic fragility. Winder tracks how the rush to add governance layers actually reduced transparency. This created barriers between resources and the community they were meant to serve. This retrospective offers not a celebration of resilience, but a warning. Award winners included Dr. William “Bill” Russell (Legacy Business Leader), Alicia Cole of Lillies Boutique (Certification Cohort Member), and Berthine Crèvecoeur West of Westbridge Solutions (Accelerator Cohort Member). The event also celebrated the 2025 Small Business Impact Institute graduates, seven of whom earned supply-chain certifications. STORY 2: Lawmakers seek Lottery money for need-based college scholarships Georgia’s public colleges hit record enrollment this fall, with over 382,000 students, but a bipartisan Senate committee says too many are still being left behind. The HOPE Scholarship, funded by the state lottery, has helped over 2 million students since 1993, but it’s merit-based—requiring a 3.0 GPA—and doesn’t account for financial need. For low-income students juggling work and school, losing HOPE often means dropping out entirely. The committee is pushing for a $126 million need-based aid program, funded by the lottery’s $1.7 billion reserves. But not everyone’s on board. Critics argue need-based aid feels like “social welfare,” despite warnings of a growing “brain drain” as students leave Georgia for better financial aid elsewhere. Gov. Brian Kemp praised HOPE’s legacy this week, but advocates say Georgia must do more to keep talented students in-state. STORY 3: Applications for Jackson EMC Washington Youth Tour now open Jackson EMC is now accepting applications for the 2026 Washington Youth Tour—a once-in-a-lifetime, all-expenses-paid trip to D.C. from June 12-19. Four lucky high school sophomores or juniors from the Jackson EMC service area will be selected for this leadership experience. Who’s eligible? Walmart, teaming up with Wing, announced Wednesday that drone deliveries are now a thing in metro Atlanta—just in time for last-minute shoppers. Need wrapping paper? Holiday meal ingredients? A stocking stuffer you forgot? These 12-pound drones, zipping along at 60 mph, can deliver in five minutes if you’re within six miles. For now, Georgia’s drone-enabled Walmarts are in Conyers, Dallas, Hiram, Loganville, McDonough, and Woodstock. And while this is Atlanta’s first legal drone delivery service, drones have already been making, uh, less festive deliveries—state officials recently flagged them as a growing problem for smuggling contraband into prisons. About the host: RW Estela was raised as a first-generation American in Colorado by a German mother and a Corsican-Basque father who would become a three-war veteran for the US Army, so RW was naturally a military brat and later engaged in various Vietnam-era civil-service adventures before paying his way through college by skiing for the University of Colorado, playing Boulder coffeehouses, and teaching. Pelvic health for dancers is an area of clinical practice that is currently growing in research and awareness. This week on the podcast, I'm joined by Dr. Brooke Winder to discuss pelvic health issues that are common in dancers. In this episode, we cover common pelvic health symptoms that dancers (of all ages) may experience, why stubborn back, pelvic girdle or hip pain may actually be related to your pelvic floor, and how certain cueing or technique used in dance may be contributing to pelvic floor dysfunction.About Dr. Brooke Winder:Brooke Winder is a Southern California-based physical therapist who specializes in dance medicine and in addressing issues within and surrounding the pelvic floor for performing artists. She is an Associate Professor and Coordinator of the Dance Science degree program at California State University Long Beach, and also serves patients through her clinical practice, Renew Motion Physical Therapy Inc. She is adept at assisting performers in optimizing pelvic and orthopedic health while navigating common issues such as hypermobility. Dr. Winder has presented at several national and international conferences, and her research has been published in the Journal of Women's & Pelvic Health Physical Therapy, Journal of Dance Medicine & Science, Clinical Biomechanics, Journal of Electromyography and Kinesiology, Journal of Orthopedic and Sports Physical Therapy, and Orthopedic Physical Therapy Practice. Dr. Winder teaches continuing education courses for rehabilitation professionals that focus on addressing pelvic health in artistic athletes, and has authored and co-authored pelvic floor-focused chapters in recent books including The ‘Female' Dancer: A Soma-scientific Approach, Dance Injuries: Reducing Risk and Maximizing Performance, and Myths of Menopause: A Guide to Increasing Your Menopause Wisdom. She also regularly teaches workshops on injury risk-reduction as well as pelvic floor health for dancers and dance educators. She is a Board-Certified Specialist in Orthopedic physical therapy, a BASI-Certified Pilates Instructor, and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the NSCA. Details? Pretty scarce. Deputies and firefighters got the call around 1:04 p.m. about the crash. When they arrived, the man was breathing but unresponsive—scary stuff. He’s now in the hospital, and the FAA is stepping in to investigate what went wrong. Sheriff Jud Smith praised the quick-thinking citizen who called 911, saying their actions helped first responders get there fast. BREAK: Ingles Markets 8 STORY 1: Marietta weighs ethics complaint ban during elections Marietta’s City Council is mulling over a proposal that would block ethics complaints during election season. The idea? To keep things from getting messy—well, messier—when candidates are running for mayor or council. If passed, no complaints could be filed between the time candidates qualify and when election results are certified. Mayor Steve Tumlin and all seven council members are up for reelection on Nov. 4, with qualifying starting Aug. 18. But here’s the kicker: Tumlin wasn’t even at the meeting where this was discussed. Without him, the council’s Judicial Legislative Committee (led by Cheryl Richardson) pushed the proposal forward for Tuesday’s meeting. Richardson, though, had mixed feelings. “It’s like voting yourself a pay raise,” she said, tweaking the proposal to start Jan. 1—after this election. Fair? Maybe. But it’s complicated. No final decisions yet, just more meetings ahead. STORY 2: New police HQ, brewery, hotel highlight growth in Kennesaw and Acworth It was a lively morning at the Northwest Cobb Area Council meeting, where Acworth Mayor Tommy Allegood and Kennesaw Mayor Derek Easterling shared updates on their cities’ growth. Sitting alongside them was Jim Croft, CEO of Croft and Associates, who kicked things off with a warm nod to the mayors. “I’ve known these guys forever,” he said. “Their leadership? Top-notch. Their integrity? Unquestionable.” Easterling dove into Kennesaw’s big-ticket projects, like the $13.9 million public safety building on Moon Station Road. “It’s going to be a game-changer,” he said, describing the two-story facility with everything from a crime lab to a K-9 space. Meanwhile, Allegood spotlighted Acworth’s bustling downtown, where parking expansions and a new Springhill Suites are in the works. “Our Main Street is on fire,” he said, grinning. Both mayors circled back to one theme: quality of life. “It’s what makes us a destination,” Allegood said. STORY 3: Marietta school system's weapons detectors: What you need to know At Marietta High, Marietta Middle, the Sixth Grade Academy, and Woods-Wilkins, students will now pass through weapons detectors at the entrances. The district approved the $554,645 purchase of Evolv detection systems back in May, following a tragic school shooting in Winder last September. That incident, along with two weapons-related scares in Marietta schools, pushed safety to the forefront. Here’s how it works: students hand over large electronics—laptops, Chromebooks—before walking through the detectors. No need to empty pockets or backpacks. “It’s quick,” said Brian Wallace, the district’s safety specialist. “Grab your stuff, and you’re on your way.” The detectors, equipped with cameras, can scan up to 1,500 people an hour. Break: Ingles Markets 8 STORY 4: Smyrna man charged in death of elderly woman after alleged medical neglect A Smyrna man, Kenneth Bogart, 57, is in custody after police say his neglect led to the death of Geralyn Gossett, an elderly woman in his care. The incident unfolded at Bogart’s condo on Doranne Court. According to the arrest warrant, Bogart picked Gossett up from the hospital on July 17, noticing she was “becoming incoherent.” Later that night, she experienced a medical emergency. At some point between midnight and 1 a.m. on July 18, Bogart helped her into the bathroom for a shower. What happened next is hard to fathom—Gossett reportedly flailed on the floor for hours, even damaging the wall. Instead of calling for help, Bogart filmed her and sent the video to a friend for advice. Then, unbelievably, he left her there and slept in his car.
