This week, Chris and Matt unpack the deepening chaos at the Pentagon as Pete Hegseth's tenure as secretary of defense continues to spiral. From more leaked strike plans on Signal to staff purges and his wife sitting in on sensitive meetings, the dysfunction is reaching new lows. Then, a little-known Russian spymaster emerges as a key player in Ukraine peace talks, just as far-right ideologues inside Russia insist on total victory at any cost. Plus, listener questions on Europe's military independence, Bulgaria's role in Russian espionage, and the EU's Orbán problem. The 2024 Republican presidential primary is off to a bit of a slow start. Donald Trump and former governors Nikki Haley and Asa Hutchinson have entered the race, but other likely candidates, such as Ron DeSantis and Mike Pence, are still sitting on the sidelines. Almost every Republican senator who flirted with the idea seems likely to pass, with the notable exception of Tim Scott, who's been making stops in Iowa and New Hampshire. Into this vacuum has come Vivek Ramaswamy, who stated his intentions in a Wall Street Journal op-ed. He declared that he was running to forge “an inspiring national identity that dilutes the woke agenda to irrelevance.” In a subsequent interview with POLITICO's Daniel Lippman, Vivek added that, “The GOP has a historic opportunity to answer the question of what it means to be an American.”  You probably don't know much about Vivek Ramaswamy – he's a young entrepreneur from Ohio who's never run for anything. But there are a few reasons to keep an eye on him:  1. He says he's willing to spend millions of dollars of an estimated half-billion dollar fortune on the race  2. He's a regular presence on the Fox News Channel, which is the top information source for Republican primary voters 3. And he seems to be putting together a serious campaign made up of political pros Vivek swears he has a plan to break out of the single digits and take down Donald Trump. On this episode of Playbook Deep Dive, Playbook co-author Ryan Lizza joins Vivek at the restaurant Art & Soul to learn whether he is completely delusional —  or whether he just might be onto something. Ryan Lizza is a Playbook co-author for POLITICO. Vivek Ramaswamy is a biotech entrepreneur and Republican presidential contender.  Afra Abdullah is an associate producer for POLITICO audio. Mr. Gershkovich reports on Russia as part of the Journal's Moscow bureau.” “Trump's lead grows in GOP primary race, now over 50% support,” by Fox News' Victoria Balara: “The survey, released Wednesday, finds [Donald] Trump has doubled his lead since February and is up by 30 points over Ron DeSantis (54%-24%). Last month, he was up by 15 (43%-28%). No one else hits double digits.” See the poll Our colleagues Hailey Fuchs, Clothilde Goujard and Daniel Lippman have a big investigation up this morning into the transatlantic political influence machine that TikTok put together as it battles efforts to regulate or ban the platform because of ties to China. The former police officer, Wayne Couzens, who raped and murdered Sarah Everard two years ago, has admitted three counts of indecent exposure, one of which happened just four days before he kidnapped and killed Sarah Everard. Now academics and criminologists are calling for a change in the way indecent exposure is seen – saying we need to stop the perception of it as a so-called ‘nuisance offence' and take it more seriously, as in some cases it can lead to far more serious crimes. Nuala talks to BBC's Home Affairs correspondent, Dominic Casciani and Jennifer Grant from the University of Portsmouth. What are your thoughts on children's sleepovers? Are they a rite of passage or just a big headache? Well, #nosleepovers was trending on social media recently after an American influencer and mum of two, Tara Huck, shared her unpopular parenting opinion: she doesn't allow her children to attend sleepovers. When Netmums did a poll of their UK parents - 63% said they ban sleepovers. So is it the end for sleepovers? Scientists say that an on-demand, non-hormonal contraceptive pill for men may be a real possibility after successful trials stopped sperm from being able to swim. Michelle Roberts is the BBC's Digital Health Editor. The republican Nikki Haley has announced that she will be running for president next year in the US. She's the first Republican to challenge Donald Trump for the party's presidential nomination. Nikki Haley first made her way onto the political scene back in 2010, when she became the youngest governor in the USA at the age of 39, securing a victory against an all-male field to become South Carolina's first female and Asian-American governor. Since then she has been hailed as a rising star who could potentially change the Republican party's male-dominated image. So what does this announcement mean for American Politics? The battle to become President Joe Biden's top defender on Capitol Hill is on. With Republicans sharpening their investigative knives for Biden (this week, House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy released a list of more than a dozen lines of inquiry into the administration), the race to succeed outgoing Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) as the top Dem on the House Oversight Committee raging at a fever pitch.  Who will it be? Plus, deputy editor Zack Stanton chats with Daniel Lippman's major investigation into the conduct of No Labels, the centrist group that has embarked on an ambitious $70 million project laying the groundwork for a unity ticket presidential campaign in 2024. But the story is different inside the walls of the organization. “Interviews with 14 former employees — including five who left in the last few months — and four other people familiar with No Labels reveals a cutthroat culture, one where staffers are routinely fired or pushed out, have little trust in management, and believe the workplace environment can be difficult for minority and female colleagues."

An Alabama sheriff said Wednesday that a jail official visited a murder suspect in prison before helping him escape last week and that her actions suggest their plan had been in the works for some time. John Stolnis offers the latest on this fascinating story. Ukrainian fighters battling Russian forces in the tunnels beneath Mariupol's immense steel plant refused to surrender in the face of relentless attacks, with the wife of one commander saying they had vowed to “stand till the end.” Clayton Neville reports on this for us. The Senate will vote next week on legislation that would codify abortion rights into federal law as Democrats mount their response to the Supreme Court's leaked draft decision that would overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling. Linda Kenyon checks in from Capitol Hill to bring the details. For the past year, America's job market has run like a well-engineered machine, adding an impressive average of 540,000 workers a month despite a punishing inflation rate, Russia's ruinous war against Ukraine, a still-risky pandemic, jittery financial markets and the prospect of much higher borrowing costs. CNBC's Jessica Ettinger stops by to preview "Jobs Friday". There is little credible information about the new Disinformation Governance Board. And that has made it an instant target for criticism. We'll talk to the reporter who broke the story of the board's existence - Politico's Daniel Lippman. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The panel debate how his popularity is faring, and whether Trump's ‘huge fundraising haul' could give him an advantage if he decides to run in 2024.Together, the panel also discuss Ukraine tensions, RNC's vote to censure Liz Cheney, and who could be the dark-horse candidate for the presidential election.Created & produced by Podcast Partners: www.podcastpartners.comSign up to receive updates by email when a new episode drops at: www.wrightonthenail.fm
