This week, we welcome first time guest, Dr. Joe Dwyer, who specializes in hand, wrist and elbow surgery. Our main topic is the elbow dislocation witnessed by so many on the opening night of the NFL season. What can Sean Murphy-Bunting, cornerback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. and Buc fans expect after this gruesome injury.
Joe Dwyer is a Founding Partner at Manifold Group (FKA Founder Equity & Digital Intent). Manifold Group is a venture holding company based in Chicago. Prior to Manifold Group, Joe worked in early-stage venture capital here in Chicago, but Joe is a serial entrepreneur at heart. He has over 25 years of experience creating and growing new businesses.Joe spoke with Matt about his background, the startups that he founded, his philosophy surrounding Entrepreneurship, and the state of Venture Capital. They dig into Joe's passion for early-stage companies, the re-branding of Manifold Group and Manifold Ventures, and the dramatic changes he's seen in Chicago's Venture Capital landscape. Finally, Joe provides listeners with his current views on Crypto.
Today is a big day for us, because today we're unveiling our new company. It's called Manifold, and it combines our advisory practice, formerly known as Digital Intent, our venture investing activity, and new incubation studio. This reorganization is several years in the making, and the goal is to create what we call a perpetual machine for value creation. I thought it would make sense to bring in one of my partners Joe Dwyer to talk about the rationale behind the change, as well as how we got here. Joe is a fellow professor in the Innovation and Entrepreneurship program at Northwestern, and is one of the smartest people I've ever met. The conversational is in-depth, perhaps somewhat controversial in places, but I think you'll find his perspective super interesting. For more information about how to create value in your own organizations, visit us at https://manifold.group. And as always, if you enjoyed this episode, would love a review. Thanks for listening!
The loss of a pet can be as hard or sometimes harder than losing a loved one. It can be devastating and having help coping with this loss is important. On today’s show, Jodi will share practical steps of dealing and coping with the loss of a beloved pet and how to find peace in whatever stage of grief you are in. Loss of a pet due to death or when it goes missing, can cause intense feelings of guilt. Jodi will discuss ways of navigating this loss and how to start to heal. After working briefly in the mental health field, Jodi decided to move into the care of pets. For the past 20 plus years, she has owned and operated a family run pet care business in, both Westchester and Fairfield Counties. Through the years, she has learned how to take care of special needs, elderly, and sick pets of all kinds. She has also experienced the devastation and sadness both personally as well as professionally, when our pets leave this world. This experience led her to become a pet bereavement counselor. She graduated from Sacred Heart University in Fairfield CT in 1993, with honors, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. She then went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Fairfield University. In 2016, she became certified as a Pet Bereavement Counselor by Dr. Wallace Sife, the founder of the Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement (APLB). In September of 2018, she started working towards her certification as an Animal Chaplain, under the direction of Joe Dwyer.

The Critical Shift: Get Clarity, Find Success, Make an Impact
Whether your company is a startup or an established Fortune 500 behemoth, you've got to stay up with the times. You need new business models to meet the new demands of our changing economy. Joe Dwyer leads a company that builds high-growth new business models for both new and established companies. In this episode of The Critical Shift, Tom speaks with Joe about his early life, how he got into design and tech in the first place, and why he has created a company that helps businesses stay on the cutting edge. No matter your industry, you've got to keep up with the changes that occur. No matter what business model you have built your company on, it won't last. Every market changes. Every industry changes even if it's only small bits at a time. Recognizing that truth has enabled Joe Dwyer and the team at Digital Intent to find a place helping companies make the pivots necessary to stay profitable in an ever-changing world. In this conversation, Joe talks with Tom about the creation of Digital Intent and how his life journey has taken him to a place of success. You'll enjoy the stories Joe has to tell. Imagine being put on a plane to Europe at 11 years old with nobody waiting at the other end. When Joe Dwyer was 11 years old his parents put him on an airplane and pointed him toward Europe. When he arrived, he got off the plane, retrieved his luggage, hailed a taxi, and traveled to his uncle's home... and his uncle wasn't even there. That is the independent kind of life that Joe's parents taught him how to live and he feels it was instrumental in enabling him to be confident and proactive in not only building a career but building his life. Joe's doing the same thing with his children now, only a little more guarded and seeing the benefits manifested in their lives also. You'll be surprised at some of the things Joe has experienced and how those experiences have shaped his life so be sure you listen to this episode. Who's the most important influence on your life? For this co-founder, it's his wife. One of the obstacles that Joe Dwyer has had to overcome in his life is the condition of attention deficit disorder. He credits his wife with being his greatest champion and best support in that struggle and points out in this conversation how she has helped him time and time again to avoid the mistakes that would otherwise have happened in his career if he had been blazing a trail all on his own. You can hear this beautiful description of a great married team in this conversation. You don't want to miss this. Every startup has to be a team sport. It's impossible for any founder to have the skill mix and abilities to handle every situation that is going to arise in the birth of a new company. Joe Dwyer has seen many startups succeed and many others fail and it's his observation that every startup has to be what he calls a "team sport" in order to be the success that is desired. In this conversation, Joe shares why he believes that and how smart founders are the ones who surround themselves with people who are gifted in areas where they are not. Outline of This Episode [1:10 ] The unique opportunity Joe had to go to school in Europe as a kid. [9:24] The American problem of not being able to relate to other people in the world. [13:12] How travel impacts the way Joe has learned to do business. [15:22] The vital impact Joe's wife Nancy has had on his career. [17:44] Joe's first business venture. [22:46] Why startups are a team sport. [27:40] Teaching as the best way to learn. [32:11] The one thing Joe's team does to help companies. I can’t believe it’s August already, and that means two things, 1) season 3 is here! And 2) this podcast is officially 1 year old! With a new year of stories ahead, My Rescue Rocks just got a new look to go with it! Have you noticed our new cover art for the show? A big thank you to Zach from podcastdesigner.com for that amazing birthday present! We’re kicking off season 3 in style! I know I’ve mentioned it before, but one of my favorite podcasts is NPR’s Snap Judgment, and it’s in a tiny, 5-minute story I heard over there, that I discovered today’s guest. That story was actually one of the inspirations that led me to create My Rescue Rocks; when I heard how one dog’s story actually changed laws that affected dogs across the US, I realized just how powerful stories could be. Have you ever heard of Daniel: The Miracle Beagle? If not, you still may have heard his infamous story of survival, and you might already know how he escaped an Alabama shelter to become an ambassador for change with celebrity status. If none of that sounds familiar, though, don’t worry, because Daniel’s dad, Joe Dwyer, is going to tell us all about it, and although the infamous “Miracle Beagle” is his most well-known rescue dog, he certainly wasn’t his first. I’m excited to be able to dig in deeper and put a spotlight on more of Joe’s story and bring to light some of the other dogs that have inspired him to help make an impact on homeless dogs all over the country. Joe’s love for dogs was always apparent, even in his earliest childhood memories… To access links to resources and see some photos submitted by our storyteller, please visit http://myrescuerocks.net/31. Please help us spread our rescue stories by sharing this show with a friend, PAWlease, I’d really appreciate it! This month's Insight in Person podcast is a three-part, in-depth look at the entrepreneurial journey of Scott Mandell, Founder and CEO of Enjoy Life Foods, who took his company from idea to startup to acquisition—and in the process helped to establish a product category around allergen-free foods. In the third episode of the series, we are joined by Mandell and Joe Dwyer, adjunct lecturer of innovation and entrepreneurship at the Kellogg School and a partner at Digital Intent, to look at how Enjoy Life Foods financed its growth. How did Mandell navigate a tricky funding environment in order to become a category-maker in the allergen-free packaged food industry? What can other startups learn from Enjoy Life's successes--and its numerous setbacks?

I’m amazed at in how many ways dogs help out the human race. Their ability to connect with us and reach us in ways that no one else can is astounding. Most of the time they aren’t doing anything special – just being dogs. However, by just being a dog they are able to help us in ways that are both simple and powerful. In this episode I look into 3 really cool ways that dogs are being of great service to people, helping us overcome obstacles, do things that were not possible on our own and being of such great service to us. I bring on my good friend Steve Sokolowicz from the Calais School to talk about their new program of teaching special needs kids how to train dogs. This is a project that I’m very honored to be a part of and see first hand the impact that dogs have on the kids involved. Then I bring back Joe Dwyer (from episode 6) to tell us how his therapy dog, Shelby, bring some brightness into people who are sick and suffering, and how she encourages children to gain confidence in reading. Looking at all the ways that dog’s help us it’s obvious why we call them man’s best friend. For dog lovers like us there is nothing more devastating than losing our furry best friends. The lifespan of the domestic dog is so short compared to ours which means that at some point we’ll have to deal with losing our dogs. You never know how you will react to the loss of your dog until it happens. This week I’ve invited Joe Dwyer, fellow dog trainer and counselor with The Association of Pet Loss and Bereavement, to talk about how we can deal with such a loss, ways to cope with our feelings and how to better support those around us are suffering a loss.
