See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This was a collaboration between himself and the late Andy Rourke--former bass player for the Smiths. Although the record was scheduled to be released in 2022, those plans were cut short due to Andy's declining health. Last year, following his death of pancreatic cancer at the age of 59, Andy urged Kav to go ahead and release the album. It's a powerful and poignant story. The record is not only amazing, it also includes guitar performances from Johnny Marr. This is the first time that Andy and Johnny had played together since The Smiths broke up 37 years ago! In April 2019 KAV SANDHU (Happy Mondays) launched BLITZ VEGA with ANDY ROURKE, the legendary bassist who helped craft the iconic sound of the 80s with seminal band, The Smiths. His recognizable and undeniable iconic bass lines from Barbarism Begins at Home to How Soon Is Now helped solidify the sound of the Smiths. It is no wonder Johnny Marr declared Rourke's playing on The Queen of Dead LP as "Something no other bass player could match."BLITZ VEGA debuted their first single, "Hey Christo" in April 16, 2019. They played their debut live show on July 24, 2019 at the House of Machines in the Los Angeles Art District. They followed up with the release of their second single "Lost & Found" mixed by Jagz Kooner (Primal Scream/ Kasabian/ Massive Attack) on September 20, 2019 and a single for Halloween on October 30, 2019 called LA Vampire.  They then released the single "Strong Forever" on November 17, 2022 which featured special guest Johnny Marr, the guitarist of the Smiths. He went on to tour internationally with the Happy Mondays, playing Coachella with the band in 2007 and co-writing their album Unkle Dysfunctional as well as the title track "Playground Superstar."  He  launched his solo project under moniker "KAV" in 2008 and debut his EP "Blaggers N' Liars" which the single was featured in Showtime. Broken Record with Rick Rubin, Malcolm Gladwell, Bruce Headlam and Justin Richmond

Johnny Marr is an acclaimed British guitarist who's played with a ton of bands including, most famously, The Smiths. Marr started playing guitar as a young teenager growing up in Manchester. When he turned 15 he dropped out of school and moved to London to join the band Sister Ray. A couple years later he would help form The Smiths with Morrissey, Mike Joyce, and Marr's friend and bassist, Andy Rourke. After The Smiths broke up in 1987, Marr went on to collaborate with an array of different musicians and play in bands like The Pretenders, The The, and Modest Mouse. In the early aughts, Marr started releasing solo material, and he's on the brink of releasing a new album of his greatest hits. On today's episode Justin Richmond talks to Johnny Marr about his exciting work scoring movies with Pharrell and Hans Zimmer. Marr also recalls the terror he felt performing live in front of stadiums full of fans with The Pretenders on U2's Joshua Tree tour. And he talks about the time he bought a Fender Stratocaster while hanging out with Oasis' Noel Gallager. That Strat has nine pickups and it eventually led to him writing one the best songs of his solo career. You can hear a playlist of some of our favorite Johnny Marr songs HERE.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“Andy Rourke Remembered” Well, he may have been in a band with the greats, but let's face it, Andy Rourke was one of them as well. The Manchester born Rourke joined his childhood pal Johnny Marr's band The Smiths in 1982 and he played with them until their demise in 1987. That's Rourke you hear on every Smiths record, including The Queen Is Dead, Strangeways Here We Come and Louder Than Bombs. After the legendary band broke up, Rourke played with Sinead O'Connor, The Pretenders, Killing Joke, Badly Drawn Boy, Ian Brown of the Stone Roses and Morrissey. Rourke also teamed up with New Order's Peter Hook and Mani of the Stone Roses and formed the band Freebass. He also played with Dolores O'Riordan of the Cranberries in the band D.A.R.K. and around the time I chatted with him, he had formed Blitz Vega with Kav Sandhu, a band that also featured Johnny Marr as a special guest. Rourke's life was busy and exciting and this list doesn't cover all he did, but it does serve as a reminder of how brilliant he was. A prowling blend of rockabilly, funk and post-punk, Rourke's baselines were intricate, inventive and artful. Rourke died in Mid-May and the tributes that poured in were testament after testament that this man was loved. Perhaps it was Moz's, however, that was the most on-point: "He will never die as long as his music is heard. He didn't ever know his own power, and nothing that he played had been played by someone else. His distinction was so terrific and unconventional and he proved it could be done. He was also very, very funny and very happy, and post-Smiths, he kept a steady identity - never any manufactured moves. I suppose, at the end of it all, we hope to feel that we were valued. Andy need not worry about that.” www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.embersarts.com Stereo Embers The Podcast Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast EMAIL: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

The New Pornographers' Carl Newman discusses the many themes of isolation and collapse on the band's recently released 9th studio album, Continue As A Guest (Merge Records), a joyously dark and tuneful reaction to what Newman refers to as "the ambivalence of day-to-day life during the pandemic and the endless pitfalls of living online." Plus the return of Record Store Day co-founder Carrie Colliton, who calls in from Nashville music conference to share some impressive stats from April's Record Store Day, assert that CD's are still very much a going concern. Written, produced, engineered, and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed and produced the theme music and selected interstitial music. Sponsored as always by Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, Tito's Handmade Vodka, and Crosley turntables. Please rate us, review and subscribe, wherever you get podcasts.  Episode dedicated to Smiths' bassist Andy Rourke who passed away right after the show was edited, look for a proper tribute soon.

In this episode we welcome pop poacher-turned-gamekeeper (turned rockademic) Cliff Jones to RBP's Hammersmith HQ and invite him to talk about his shape-shifting career in music — as well as about Paul Simon and doomed Rolling Stone Brian Jones (no relation). Barney starts things off with his memories of Cliff coming into the MOJO office circa 1994-5, plus we hear about long-form pieces our guest wrote about Peter Green and (for The Face) the Fugees. We also discuss Johnny Cigarettes' 1999 NME interview with Gay Dad, the band Cliff formed in the wake of Britpop. Nick Broomfield's new BBC documentary about Brian Jones prompts conversation about the self-destructive blues obsessive who was sidelined by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards — and ditched by Anita Pallenberg — after which we turn our attention to the rather different Paul Simon. Clips from Tony Scherman's 1993 audio interview with the other half of Art Garfunkel are jumping-off points for our collective thoughts on the New Yorker's career from his Brill Building days to the Hearts and Bones album and beyond. We pay heartfelt tribute to our guest's fellow RBP contributor Pete Silverton, who passed away on May 18th, and recall his crucial early Sounds interviews with the Clash, the Sex Pistols and other punk bands. Among the new library additions discussed, finally, are pieces about Flamingo Club owner Rik Gunnell (1966), Mick Hucknall's Frantic Elevators (1982), hip hop heroes the Jungle Brothers (1989) ... and, from 2007, Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse. Please note this episode was recorded before we learned of the passing of former Smiths bassist Andy Rourke. Pieces discussed: Talk Talk talk tech, The Fugees, Gay Dad, Brian Jones by Dawn James, Brian Jones by Greil Marcus, Brian Jones by Carol Clerk, Paul Simon audio, Hearts and Bones, Sex Pistols, Sid Vicious, Rik Gunnell, Average White Band, Danielle Dax, The Jungle Brothers, Frantic Elevators, Dave Matthews, Erykah Badu and Lily Allen/Amy Winehouse.
