The Geek In Review
Charting the Three Waves of Legal AI Transformation with Thomson Reuters' Raghu Ramanathan

The Geek In Review

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 21, 2025 42:25

This week we welcome Raghu Ramanathan, President of Legal Professionals at Thomson Reuters, for an insightful discussion on the profound impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the legal industry. Raghu shares why he believes the legal sector, alongside healthcare, stands at the forefront of the AI revolution. His journey into the legal tech world, driven by the transformative potential of AI, sets the stage for a deep dive into current trends, future predictions, and the strategic initiatives shaping the future of law.Central to the conversation is Raghu's updated perspective on the evolution of law firms, revisiting predictions he first made in 2017. He outlines a compelling framework describing "three waves" of AI adoption currently underway. The first wave, "Optimization," which many firms are experiencing now, focuses on using AI to enhance existing workflows, making tasks faster and more efficient. The second wave, "Re-engineering," involves fundamentally rethinking processes, staffing models (including the traditional pyramid structure), pricing strategies, and the very nature of legal work to leverage AI's capabilities more deeply. Looking further ahead, the third wave anticipates the emergence of entirely "New Business Models."Thomson Reuters is actively navigating and shaping this transformation, particularly through its AI platform, CoCounsel. Raghu highlights the rapid evolution of CoCounsel, emphasizing the continuous development of new "skills"—capabilities ranging from summarization and research to drafting and complex analysis like the innovative "Claims Explorer." He explains TR's strategy involves integrating proprietary data (like Westlaw), client-provided documents, and public information, leveraging advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) from various providers to deliver comprehensive and powerful AI assistance. Prioritizing new skill development involves balancing significant client value with technical feasibility, constantly informed by close collaboration with innovation-focused customers.Beyond law firms, the conversation explores the crucial role and adoption of AI within the court system. Raghu notes a surprising enthusiasm among courts, driven by the urgent need to address growing case backlogs and enhance access to justice within tight budgets. He points to Thomson Reuters' significant partnerships, including a major agreement to deploy AI tools across the US federal courts and ongoing collaboration with the National Center for State Courts (NCSC), which is fostering education and policy discussions among judges and court staff nationwide. Complementing product innovation, TR's expanded "Customer Success" initiative underscores the importance of user adoption, providing dedicated resources and best practices to help lawyers and legal professionals effectively integrate AI tools into their daily workflows, ensuring technology translates into tangible value.Raghu anticipates that smaller and mid-sized law firms may initially leverage AI more aggressively as a competitive equalizer, pushing larger firms to make bolder, more strategic moves beyond simple optimization. He stresses that the ultimate differentiator for success in the AI era will likely be less about the technology itself and more about effective change management. The rapid pace of AI adoption already witnessed in the legal sector signals that this transformation is not a distant prospect but a present reality reshaping the industry at an unprecedented speed.Listen on mobile platforms:  Apple Podcasts |  Spotify | YouTube[Special Thanks to Legal Technology Hub for their sponsoring this episode.] Blue Sky: @geeklawblog.com @marlgebEmail: geekinreviewpodcast@gmail.comMusic: Jerry David DeCiccaTranscript

Alex Fuglesang - A Deep Dive Into Desal, Literally

The Fundamental Molecule

Sometimes things just strike you as dumb and then one day you understand why. The current model of desalination is a great example. It's something that everyone thinks that we at BIV should be invested in up to the eyeballs, and, of course, we support technologies that are pertinent to desal, but the legacy model is just a tough nut to crack. Ever more scaled plants to minimize the per gallon cost of purified water is the name of the game. So when I met Alex Fugelsang and the full Flocean team, it was like a light bulb going off. Legacy desal was dumb for the simple reason you were pumping up onto land a whole load of water, putting all of it through a giant factory, having designed it for all of that water, then throwing at least 40% of it back into the ocean. So what if you could desalinate under the surface of the sea and get rid of all that excess capacity? You don't run into paradigm shifts all the time, but we think that Flocean is one of them. Alex is a superb guy with a fascinating skill set, having spent most of his life operating machinery at inhospitable depths, and he's on a remarkable mission to put a huge dent in global water insecurity. Please enjoy my conversation with Alex Fugelsang.  Subscribe to The Fundamental Molecule here: https://www.burntislandventures.com/the-fundamental-molecule For the full show notes, transcript, and links to mentioned content, check out the episode page here: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-fundamental-molecule/id1714287205 ----------- In today's episode, Alex Fuglesang details Flocean's underwater desalination: less energy and less environmental impact thanks to stable deep-sea conditions. He reveals how robotics ensure reliable maintenance in their water-as-a-service model, and highlights building trust with communities, providing tailored solutions for water scarcity. Alex also shares insights on his background, leadership, and the future of desalination. 00:00 - Why Legacy Desalination Is Failing 02:16 - Operating and Engineering in Harsh Deep Sea Conditions   05:30 - Robotics and Automation in Underwater Water Tech   06:32 - Flocean's Origin Story   10:35 - How Flocean Cuts Energy Use and Environmental Impact   13:22 - Simplifying Permitting for Subsea Desalination   15:16 - Real-World Water Scarcity Challenges in Island Nations   17:24 - Growing Industrial Demand for Onsite Desalination   19:52 - New Business Models for Water Delivery   22:56 - What Infrastructure Investors Want from Water Tech   24:09 - Building a World-Class Water Tech Team   26:53 - Targeting High-Impact Coastal Markets   28:38 - Strategic Marketing for Deep Tech Startups   29:57 - Military Leadership Lessons in Startup Life   34:17 - The Future of Desal 37:43 - Cutting Red Tape in Water Infrastructure Projects   39:17 - Top Advice for Climate Hardware Entrepreneurs   Links: Burnt Island Ventures: https://www.burntislandventures.com/ Alex Fuglesang: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alexanderfuglesang/?originalSubdomain=no Flocean: https://www.flocean.green/ SM Material Key Takeaways: "In water-scarce regions, the frustration is real. Limited budgets lead to expensive maintenance and weeks of downtime." “Cutting bureaucracy and aligning stakeholders can unleash new technologies." “Flocean uses natural deep-sea pressure to cut power consumption. 40% energy efficiency savings are not abnormal." "Scale with trust and demand. Start small to build trust, then scale without massive infrastructure changes."

Ny sommer, ny konferanse i New Business Models Conference-serien. The Second Curve: Bracing for Changes in Technology, Consumers, and Markets The podcast sees futurist and author, Ian Morrison, discuss the concept of his book, 'The Second Curve'. This concept delineates how businesses must straddle their existing 'first curve' while preparing for a 'second curve' defined by new technologies, market shifts, and emerging consumer behaviors. Morrison cites examples, like Microsoft and Apple, of successful navigation from the first to second curve and emphasizes the importance of not abandoning the profit potential of the existing business too soon. Concerning organisations, Morrison discusses a shift from mechanistic to more fluid 'organic' forms, referencing shifts to more connected, network-driven models and an importance of corporate culture. He also explains the strategy of 'virtual integration' employed by companies like Apple, contrasting it to traditional integration approaches. Morrison finishes by highlighting the enduring relevance of adaptable, entrepreneurial culture in the success of these transformations.   Find Ian here:   00:00 Introduction: The Dilemma of the Second Curve 00:57 The Journey of the Author: From Geographic Change to Futurism 04:40 The Genesis of the Second Curve Concept 05:41 The Challenges of Navigating the Second Curve 06:47 The Impact of Technological Change on Businesses 09:02 The Role of Forecasting in Navigating Change 11:29 The Pitney Bowes Case Study: Navigating the Second Curve 13:13 The Importance of Timing in Jumping to the Second Curve 13:48 The Role of Innovation in Business Survival 15:18 The Impact of External Changes on Business Strategies 17:06 The Challenges of Adapting to New Business Models 18:37 The Role of Emotional Intelligence and Flexibility in Navigating Change 21:39 The Pitney Bowes Story: A Lesson in Navigating the Second Curve 37:16 The Role of Culture in Navigating the Second Curve 50:15 Conclusion: The Future of the Second Curve   IanMorrison #AidanMcCullen #BusinessInnovation #DigitalTransformation #SecondCurve #PitneyBowes #SonyVsDisney #OrganizationalChange #FutureOfWork

Welcome to episode #918 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. In an era where digital transformation is not just a buzzword but a survival strategy, David Rogers is a world-renowned expert on digital transformation and a distinguished member of the Columbia Business School faculty. He has authored five influential books, including his latest, The Digital Transformation Roadmap, which dives deep into the challenges and strategies crucial for organizations navigating the rapid currents of digital change. David addresses a critical concern: Why do 70% of businesses falter in their digital initiatives? His answer is a clarion call to organizations worldwide — transformation is not just about revamping products... it's about reinventing the organization itself. David presents a five-step roadmap that guides businesses through the continuous tumult of digital innovation, a methodology resonating with his extensive work with global corporations like Google, Microsoft, and Visa. It's not about the technology, he argues, but about strategy, leadership, and a paradigm shift in thinking. This philosophy, first introduced in his landmark bestseller, The Digital Transformation Playbook, has been a guiding light for numerous organizations, and is now more relevant than ever. So if you're thinking about everything from blockchain, the hype and reality of Web3, the future of artificial intelligence, and new business models necessitated by digital transformation, we're here for it. David's insights on the impact of Covid-19 on decentralizing platforms and the need for a customer and business-centric approach, rather than a technology-alone focus, are particularly enlightening. His approach is both pragmatic and visionary. He emphasizes the importance of shared vision, problem selection, and innovative leadership in driving successful digital transformation. His ideas on managing growth, nurturing talent, and fostering a culture conducive to innovation are invaluable for any leader navigating the digital age. Enjoy the conversation... Takeaways: Digital transformation is not just about technology, but about the business and the customer. Successful digital transformation requires a shared vision, problem selection, and strong leadership. The five steps of digital transformation are defining a shared vision, picking the problems that matter most, validating new ventures, managing growth at scale, and growing technology, talent, and culture. Centralized and decentralized platforms are a topic of discussion in the digital era, with implications for social media, databases, and more.  Blockchain and AI have limitations and should be applied strategically to solve specific problems. The future of AI holds both opportunities and challenges, and it will redefine knowledge and identity. Successful digital transformation requires empowering individuals and teams at all levels of the organization to drive change. Innovating InsuranceThe Big Themes:Cloud adoption challenges and benefits: Cloud adoption has been relatively slow because insurance companies and financial institutions tend to act conservatively, but now it's picking up. A core cloud enabler has been the need to standardize and centralize systems in order to increase speed, bring down costs, and bring in more data quality and transparency.Generative AI integration: GenAI is the next step after the movement from on-prem to cloud is completed, although some companies have already begun integrating it. Gen AI, along with the cloud, will dramatically change insurance so that ten years from now the public might not even recognize where insurance is bought from or where it is included.Regulatory compliance and localized requirements: Global companies like Sun Life must make sure they meet many different countries' regulations and requirements. Regulations can go beyond countries and regions and come from different companies or governments. Regulatory compliance for insurance often necessitates data centers in specific countries. The Big Quote: "The objective is to further simplify, standardize, in the end, the core systems, because only by doing that [will] companies . . . be able to go into a public cloud now. The end goal ... is not the private cloud. It's the public cloud, and in the public cloud, standardization is a key topic. And in the public cloud, SAP is offering [the] right services."

Usually, when we think about creating a new business model, it revolves around pricing. It often revolves around, what are we going to charge for? If you think about what Netflix did when they first launched, you may recall Blockbuster was renting movies by the night, they were charging late fees. Most of their profit came from their late fees. Netflix on the other hand decided to offer a subscription where you could have one, two, or three DVDs at your house at any point in time, and you just paid a flat monthly fee. There were no late fees. What they did was changed the business model. They changed the pricing model. Now, how does this help everyone? Well, it helps everyone in the sense that now there's a group of people who prefer the subscription to the daily rental and they can go subscribe. We didn't eliminate one, although eventually, we did, but we didn't eliminate one, we just said let's offer more options to the marketplace. But in this case, especially the Netflix versus Blockbuster case, it was such a powerful thing that it really did eliminate the daily rental business. So they changed an entire industry. Take a moment. Step back. Think about how your customers really get value from your products, what they truly value, and can you change your business model to make your customers happier about the way they pay for your products? You might change your own industry. We hope you enjoyed this memecast. If you have any questions or feedback, please email me mark@impactpricing.com. Whether your company is a startup or an established Fortune 500 behemoth, you've got to stay up with the times. You need new business models to meet the new demands of our changing economy. Joe Dwyer leads a company that builds high-growth new business models for both new and established companies. In this episode of The Critical Shift, Tom speaks with Joe about his early life, how he got into design and tech in the first place, and why he has created a company that helps businesses stay on the cutting edge. No matter your industry, you've got to keep up with the changes that occur. No matter what business model you have built your company on, it won't last. Every market changes. Every industry changes even if it's only small bits at a time. Recognizing that truth has enabled Joe Dwyer and the team at Digital Intent to find a place helping companies make the pivots necessary to stay profitable in an ever-changing world. In this conversation, Joe talks with Tom about the creation of Digital Intent and how his life journey has taken him to a place of success. You'll enjoy the stories Joe has to tell. Imagine being put on a plane to Europe at 11 years old with nobody waiting at the other end. When Joe Dwyer was 11 years old his parents put him on an airplane and pointed him toward Europe. When he arrived, he got off the plane, retrieved his luggage, hailed a taxi, and traveled to his uncle's home... and his uncle wasn't even there. That is the independent kind of life that Joe's parents taught him how to live and he feels it was instrumental in enabling him to be confident and proactive in not only building a career but building his life. Joe's doing the same thing with his children now, only a little more guarded and seeing the benefits manifested in their lives also. You'll be surprised at some of the things Joe has experienced and how those experiences have shaped his life so be sure you listen to this episode. Who's the most important influence on your life? For this co-founder, it's his wife. One of the obstacles that Joe Dwyer has had to overcome in his life is the condition of attention deficit disorder. He credits his wife with being his greatest champion and best support in that struggle and points out in this conversation how she has helped him time and time again to avoid the mistakes that would otherwise have happened in his career if he had been blazing a trail all on his own. You can hear this beautiful description of a great married team in this conversation. You don't want to miss this. Every startup has to be a team sport. It's impossible for any founder to have the skill mix and abilities to handle every situation that is going to arise in the birth of a new company. Joe Dwyer has seen many startups succeed and many others fail and it's his observation that every startup has to be what he calls a "team sport" in order to be the success that is desired. In this conversation, Joe shares why he believes that and how smart founders are the ones who surround themselves with people who are gifted in areas where they are not. Outline of This Episode [1:10 ] The unique opportunity Joe had to go to school in Europe as a kid. [9:24] The American problem of not being able to relate to other people in the world. [13:12] How travel impacts the way Joe has learned to do business. [15:22] The vital impact Joe's wife Nancy has had on his career. [17:44] Joe's first business venture.
