JOHN L WILLIAMS talks to Paul Burke about his account of the Lynette White murder in 1988 and the 'Cardiff Three' miscarriage of justice: BLOODY VALENTINEThe tragic story of Britain's worst miscarriage of justice as seen on TV in the BBC Wales documentary series A Killing in Tiger Bay, in which John took part.Bloody Valentine is the story of the murder of a young woman called Lynette White in the Cardiff docklands (aka Tiger Bay) on Valentine's Day 1988. It's also the story of the miscarriage of justice that came after, when three black men, 'the Cardiff Three', were wrongly convicted of her murder. It's a brutally frank tale of racism and police corruption, terrible misogynist violence and the grim realities of sex work. It's a book that got so close to the bone that the author was sued for libel by the police and received death threats from a variety of minor characters. It's an indelible portrait of life in the underbelly of Thatcher's Britain. This new edition includes an introduction and afterword bringing the extraordinary, unhappy saga up to date.'Bloody Valentine is a bloody good book' - Benjamin Zephaniah'Complex, emotional and moving. Read it' - David PeaceJohn L. Williams was born in Cardiff and now lives in London. He's written a dozen books ranging from his Cardiff Trilogy of novels to biographies of characters as diverse as Michael X and Shirley Bassey. He also writes crime fiction under the name John Lincoln. His journalism has appeared everywhere from the NME to the Financial Times. He co-organises the riotous Laugharne Weekend festival in West Wales. He is currently working on a biography of CLR James.Produced by Junkyard DogMusic courtesy of Southgate and LeighCrime Time

Podcast – The Children's Hour

This time on The Children's Hour, we explore petroglyphs with Ranger David Ottaviano from Petroglyph National Monument, and Todd Scissons, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer with Acoma Pueblo. Learn who made these ancient rock carvings, why they are so common in the desert Southwest, and what they mean to the people whose ancestors made them. Plus we find out about the Junior Ranger Program with the National Parks Service, and we hear from the kids in the Extinction Diaries about a rare and nearly extinct bird from New Zealand. The Children's Hour is supported by the Cultural Services Department and the Urban Enhancement Trust Fund at the City of Albuquerque, city councilor Pat Davis, as well as Bernalillo County, New Mexico's Commission. This project is supported in part by an award from New Mexico Arts, a division of the Department of Cultural Affairs, and by the National Endowment for the Arts. We also have support from Electric Playhouse and numerous foundations also support our work including the Infinite Gesture Fund, The Limestone Fund, and The Laughing Buddha Fund. Thank you to our listeners who contribute to us through the Paypal Giving Fund, Paypal, and by subscribing to our podcasts on Patreon. Somehow we've managed to survive the year 2020 long enough to have recorded for you our 10th Cagetastic installment of this podcast. And what better way to celebrate it than with a very Cage like bizarre doppelgänger episode where we explore the same movie, but different edits of it that were released three years apart. Yes, you read that correctly. We will be reviewing the same movie that has two different names, edits and release dates for it. Welcome to the world of the great and eclectic Nicolas Cage. So for your listening pleasure we deep dives into Paul Schrader's espionage thriller Dying Of The Light (2014), that was taken from him after his first cut, and his re-edit Dark (2017). Unlike past episodes where we discuss two different films, this week we simultaneously discuss the same film's two versions and how they are different from one another. Along the way we will also discuss how Mr. Cage was the victim of a bizarre heist of rare and valuable comic books, Tara Reid quite possibly playing Carole Baskin's in his upcoming Tiger King TV Show, the announcement of National Treasure 3 and a National Treasure Disney+ show, as well as the Cleveland Indian's connection to Nic. Clips from: Gone In 60 Seconds, Whoa!, Dying of the Light, Kesha, Batman Begins, John L. Williams, Superman, Bad Boys 2, Storage Wars, Titans, Bride's Maids, The Big Lebowski, Anchorman, Savannah Keyes, National Treasure, Indiana Jones, Mission Impossible, The Matrix, Timex, Energizer, Rick & Morty, Saving Private Ryan, What The Fuck Broadway Musical, The 3 Stooges, The Who and Lord of War. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/NobodyPutsNicInACage/message
