Most hikers would turn back at this obstacle, but those who wade across discover something extraordinary—centuries-old petroglyphs etched into stone walls whisper stories from a distant past.My journey along the Walking the Past Trail began with an easy-to-miss trailhead northeast of Reserve, NM. The three-mile round-trip hike presents two remarkable historical treasures. First, an authentic forest ranger cabin built in 1905 for just $50 stands as the last remnant of the original Tularosa Ranger Station. Walking through its modest doorway, I couldn't help but marvel at the lives of those early rangers who earned only $60 monthly while supplying their horses and equipment. These pioneers of conservation built trails, fought fires, and established the foundations of modern forest management.Beyond the cabin lies the prize that draws most visitors—extensive petroglyph panels that require a river crossing to access. These aren't simple graffiti but complex symbols pecked into stone using primitive tools. Birds, anthropomorphic figures, animals, and geometric patterns cover the rock faces in a protected alcove. Unlike some more accessible sites, these remain remarkably free from modern vandalism, creating an intimate connection with those ancient artists who left their mark here centuries ago.The petroglyphs raise fascinating questions: Were they purely artistic expression or practical communication? Did they record essential events, spiritual beliefs, or daily observations? While interpretive panels offer some insights, much remains mysterious, inviting visitors to form their connections with these enduring messages from the past.Have you explored the hidden historical treasures of the Southwest? Walking through the Parowan Gap Petroglyphs in southwestern Utah reveals ancient rock carvings that tell stories of migration, astronomical knowledge, and the spiritual beliefs of Native American peoples who inhabited this area centuries ago.• Located near St. George and Cedar City, the gap is an ancient dried riverbed cutting through solid rock• The Paiute people call the creators of these symbols the "Winoos" - their ancestors who were the first settlers• One significant panel depicts migration from an "old world" to a "new world," showing hardships like famine, drought, water crossings, and extreme weather• Petroglyphs show a leader who died upon reaching the new land, depicted with an arrow in his head and shown upside-down• Archaeoastronomer Noel and archaeologist V. Garth Norman revealed these carvings track celestial movements with remarkable precision• The site aligns with solstice events, with the sun appearing directly in the gap on the summer solstice• Different techniques were used to create petroglyphs: pecking (striking with tools), incising (cutting), and abrading (rubbing)• The site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969• Mormon pioneers led by Parley Pratt made contact with Ute leader Chief Wakara, who called this area "God's own house"• These petroglyphs demonstrate how ancient peoples maintained intimate connections with the natural worldIf you enjoyed this video, please give it a thumbs up so it gets out to more people. The Nazca lines have become famous over the years for their mysterious origins and purpose. Residing in the high desert in Southern Peru, the lines were created by removing the top layer of desert rocks, exposing the different colored clay beneath. Some of the lines appear to be an astronomical calendar, some are drawings of birds and beasts, and some seem to have no known purpose. The mystery of their purpose has led to them becoming a favorite topic of the pseudoscience community in recent decades as evidence of ancient aliens. Take a listen and see what we do know about them, when they were made, and what their purpose might be.
Adam Zurn, Executive Director of Uncharted Lancaster offers kayak tours to see the petroglyphs at Safe Habor. The petroglyphs are so significant because they are probably one of the oldest artifacts in all the Susquehanna Valley. There used to be thousands of petroglyph sites in the Lower Susquehanna, but with the buildings of dams they have been submerged. “There's a series of about six rocks with like significant carvings on them. The two big standouts are little Indian rock and big Indian rock. This cluster of rocks represents one of the two largest concentrations of petroglyphs in the northeast United States, which is cool.” Little Indian Rock is said to have the best panel rock art east of Mississippi. Zurn says this rock is really unique as it is full with all sorts of carvings. “There are three serpent carvings on the rock, and so there is a single carving a serpent and it lines up with the solstice sunrise. And so, you can go out there on the first day of summer and the first day of winter and the sun will come up right where its tail is, it is pointing. And then at a slightly different angle are two squiggly lines, again, representing serpents and those two squiggly lines, the on the equinox or the first day of spring and the first day of fall, the sun rises directly between those two.” The rock tells a story about their natural environment. “They know where the sun is going to be on, you know, very specific days. And they're and they're marking these things on the rock. And so, for me, that's just one of the things that make little Indian rock so special. You can go out there and you can see, you know, that these carvings are somewhere between 800 and 1200 years old.”Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On Sunday, the fall equinox ushered in a new season, and countless rock art panels near Moab lit up with corresponding displays of sunlight that one archaeologist has spent over 30 years documenting. Today, we look at a pictograph of a figure holding one end of a net. During the equinoxes, sunlight in the shape of a fang appears to hold the other end. We discuss with local archaeologist Rory Tyler, who has documented many of these astronomical connections around Moab. - Show Notes - • Moab Rock Art https://moabrockart.org/about-me/ • Photo: Sunlight in the shape of a fang appears to hold one end of the hunting net displayed in this pictograph. [TRANSCRIPT] [click, static] Breaker, breaker, this is Whiskey, sitting on the hood of my car, looking at newspaper rock. You know, the further West you go, the newer all the buildings get, but the older the land. Does that make sense? Maybe it's just that there's more of it out here—more land I mean—but it feels like back East we completely destroyed what evidence there was that people have lived on here for a long time. I don't know of any place like this on the East Coast. So. What is this place, you ask? Newspaper rock. Well, it's a rock, obviously. And it's got all these carvings on it. Petroglyphs, I think they're called. From…I don't know, thousands of years ago? And they're of all sorts of things—animals, people, animals and people together, people riding horses, that kind of stuff. I can't…I'm not sure if it's telling some kind of story, but given the name, I assume historians think it's a depiction of a significant event, or a few significant events. I wonder how much we were really able to figure out about it. I don't know anything about archeology or translation or if this is even a language or just, you know, a nice painting. I recognize the shapes, but I don't understand what it's trying to say. There's a metaphor for my whole life. Or, at least the last six years of it. Even now, talking to you, Birdie, I understand the words you're using, and the order you're putting them in makes sense, but I don't know what you're saying. Harry always spoke deliberately, with perfect diction and five dollar words and I'm not sure I ever really understood her. I'm not sure she ever really understood me, either. At least, not what I was really trying to say. How do historians learn to translate dead languages? How do they know they're right? How do I know that anything I ever say is being heard in the way I mean it? Maybe this is all too philosophical for ten in the morning. I just…I wish I had my own Rosetta stone, you know? Something to make it all make sense. Something to tell me the meaning behind the words. Signing off. [click, static]

Celebrate this ancient site with a book about art. In our show notes for this episode, we link each book to one of our state's great independent bookstores: Drury Lane Bookstore in Grand Marais. It gives you a description, so you can get more information about the book to help you make a decision about your reading or recommendations. Thanks for joining us for the last two seasons, as we journeyed across the state of Minnesota to see our historical sites. This is our final podcast of this series, and it has been so great to talk about books with you! All of these episodes are available on our website: cmle.org. You can also download them on your favorite podcast app. We have a series of past seasons where we talked about every county in Minnesota, and suggested books to go along with each of them. And, in yet another series, we looked at every state park in Minnesota, suggesting even more books to go along with each of these treasures of the state. It has been wonderful to talk about so many books with you, and to virtually visit so many wonderful places across Minnesota. Please enjoy reading the books we have all discussed over the last few years of this podcast. And also, I encourage you to get out there and enjoy some new and interesting places to visit. Minnesota is filled with some great places, people, and things to enjoy - so get out there and experience it all!

Deep inside Utah's remote canyons and basins hides some of the strangest ancient petroglyphs and pictographs on planet earth. This mysterious rock art features strange anthropomorphic figures that feature bizarre characteristics such as six fingers, insect-like eyes, massive feet, elongated skulls, horns and varying scenes of chaos. Some of these depictions portray the victors carrying severed heads, and some figures stand as tall as nine feet tall. Were the ancient artists depicting what they saw or what their ancestors said they saw according to their oral traditions? And what might their connection be to the infamous Skinwalker Ranch, which is located only thirty miles from the most fantastic and fierce of all these petroglyphs? I will dive into all of these questions with explorer & landscape photographer Abbie Warnock-Matthews who lives in Utah and explores the many ancient petroglyph sites of the region. This week one of my cats makes his debut in sound design. His playing about in the closet makes me it seem as if I have Very Strong Feelings about trends in rich people food. But mostly this is a look into the past of large-whale eating on a global scale up until about the 18th century. There are also surprises around how long it took Europeans to agree that whales are not fish. The pre-modern relationship to fat comes in to play - when you are most of your own heating source for most of the day, consuming fat has a different purposefulness. And I spend a fair amount of time sorting out why most Americans have probobly never met anyone who knows what whale meat tastes like.Music Credit: Fingerlympics by Doctor TurtleShow Notes: https://thehistoryofamericanfood.blogspot.com/Email: TheHistoryofAmericanFood@gmail.com Twitter: @THoAFoodInstagram: @THoAFood

• Shows how the archetypal symbols of the Pohnpaid petroglyphs have exact counterparts in other ancient cultures throughout the world• Provides evidence that Pohnpaid is closely related to--yet predates--neighboring Nan Madol• Includes hundreds of Pohnpaid petroglyphs and stone circle photos, many never before seenWhile residing on the small Pacific island of Pohnpei in the 1990s, Carole Nervig discovered that a recent brush fire had exposed hundreds of previously unknown petroglyphs carved on gigantic boulders. This portion of the megalithic site called Pohnpaid was unknown even to Pohnpei's state historic preservation officer. The petroglyphs were unlike others from Oceania, so Nervig began investigating and comparing them with petroglyphs and symbols from around the world. In this fully illustrated exploration, Nervig documents her discoveries on Pohnpei, revealing how the archetypal symbols of the Pohnpaid petroglyphs have exact counterparts in other ancient cultures and universal motifs throughout the world, including the Australian Aborigines, the Inca in Peru, the Vedic civilization of India, early Norse runes, and Japanese symbols. She provides evidence that Pohnpaid is closely related to--yet predates--neighboring Nan Madol and shows how Pohnpaid was an outpost of the sunken Kahnihmueiso, a city of the now-vanished civilization of Mu, or Lemuria.Discussing the archaeoastronomical function of the Pohnpaid stones, the author examines how many of the glyphs symbolize celestial phenomena and clearly reveal how their creators were sky watchers with a sophisticated understanding of astronomy, geophysics, geomancy, and engineering. She shows how the scientific concepts depicted in the petroglyphs reveal how the citizens of Mu had a much deeper understanding of the living Earth than we do, which gave them the ability to manipulate natural forces both physically and energetically. Combining archaeological evidence with traditional oral accounts, Nervig reveals Pohnpaid not only as a part of a geodetic network of ancient sacred sites and portals but also as a remnant of the now submerged but once enlightened Motherland of Mu.Carole Nervig has spent more than four decades researching Micronesian traditional culture and oral history as well as the sacred sites of Micronesia and Hawai'i. She first moved to Micronesia as a Peace Corps volunteer in 1969. In the 1990s she discovered a previously unknown megalithic portion of the Pohnpaid petroglyph site on the Micronesian island of Pohnpei. Creator of the Nan Madol Foundation, she now lives in Ecuador.
