POPULARITY
A découvrir ! Adam talks with British journalist and author Kate Mossman about her excellent book Men Of A Certain Age, in which she details encounters with elder statesmen of Rock. Kate tells Adam about meeting Kiss, Ray Davies and Kevin Ayers, her deep-level Queen issues, and the extent to which the relationship between father and daughter informs her feelings about some of her older male musical idols. And Adam recounts a recent encounter with a musical hero that was so nearly a dream come true… but ended in abject humiliation.Conversation recorded face-to-face in London on March 11th, 2025Thanks to Séamus Murphy-Mitchell for production support and conversation editing.Podcast illustration by Helen GreenPRE-ORDER 'I LOVE YOU, BYEEE' by Adam Buxton - 2025NORD VPNEXCLUSIVE NordVPN Deal Try it risk-free now with a 30-day money-back guarantee!PICS, VIDEOS AND LINKS (Adam's website) Hosted on Acast. Kate's an old pal from our days at Word magazine. She was on the staff for six years before heading off to the New Statesman and has just put out a collection of the sizzling and revelatory profiles she wrote for us, them and the Observer about a particular sector of the musical landscape for whom she's always carried a torch. As she wonders in ‘Men Of A Certain Age: My Encounters with Rock Royalty', “how is it that in the presence of wrinkly rock stars twice my age I sometimes think I'm meeting … me?” This tremendous exchange is full of hard-won insight about the mind-set of musicians and stops off at the following … … the fascinating appeal of rock stars' vulnerability, giant egos, oddness and obsessions – “they're often frozen at the emotional age they became famous”. … growing up with Britpop, the decade when “teenagers weren't allowed to like anything”. … things women notice and men often miss: the difference between male and female journalists. … being driven down a mountain by Kevin Ayers after he'd drunk a pint of Pernod. … why she's so drawn to the critically unfashionable acts like Bruce Hornsby, Kiss and Terence Trent D'Arby. … what she learnt from interviewing Joni Mitchell's old boyfriend Cary Raditz. … why the best route to understanding any rock star is via their parents. … her obsession with “the shamefully unfashionable” Queen, aged 11, and the appeal of these self-styled “fun ambassadors” against the grating irony of the ‘90s. … the “charming yet awful” Paul O'Neill of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra handing out $50,000 bundles of cash to the homeless. … why musicians are more interesting when they've peaked. … “the cartoon characters” of Shaun Ryder and John Lydon. … “the only people at Jeff Beck's interment were his wife and Johnny Depp”. … and being refused an interview by Janelle Monae for not being sufficiently “queer or black”. Kevin Ayers spent 30 years at the FBI, contributing to groundbreaking engineering initiatives for the Bureau and beyond. On this episode of the 3DPOD, we're fortunate to have Kevin sharing some of his once-classified insights on our podcast. It's fascinating to learn how the FBI utilized 3D printing and just how long they've been exploring this technology. In addition to his FBI tenure, Kevin has been instrumental in 3D printing's success for nearly two decades, worked at Danfoss, and currently serves as a consultant at 3D Metal Konsulting. His cumulative expertise and perspectives are truly remarkable, making this episode a must-listen.
Steve Hillage is a founding member of System 7, one of the key proto-trance acts of the early 90s, and Mirror System whose latest album 'Route 77' is out now.Prior to his involvement in dance music he had an extensive career as a guitarist in bands such as Gong, Decadence (with Kevin Ayers), Khan, and Uriel, formed with the members still at school. His solo career includes records produced by Nick Mason and Todd Rundgren, and his own production career includes records with Simple Minds and The Charlatans.Additionally, that pretty stellar CV also includes a key contribution to the representation of dance music at Glastonbury with the establishment of the dance tent in 1995.So clearly this is a good person to have on the show. We discuss the psychedelic rock scene in the 70s, the development of music tech in the 80s, and his eventual realisation that dance music was his musical home by the time of the first System 7 record in 1990.And of course a lot of other stuff too... including some advice from Jimi Hendrix and the connection between Underground Resistance and George Clinton. This is a great way to start 2025, get involved! If you're into what we're doing here on the pod then you can support the show on Patreon! Send us a Text Message.Musicians love to collaborate. We thought we'd have a look at some that are just great, some that are weird, and some that are simply awful! As usual, you'll know some, and some you won't. This month, we farewell Graham Webb, an Australian pioneer of music videos – and Blind Date! We also say goodbye to Ignatius Jones, of Jimmy and the Boys, along with a series of more conventional roles, and Steve Albini, producer of The Pixies, PJ Harvey and Nirvana. Vale! Our “Album You Must Hear Before You Die” is Pet Sounds, by The Beach Boys (1966). Long revered by musicians including The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, this album is a masterpiece of production and innovation. How do we fit it all into an hour? En 1970 pasó a formar parte de dicha banda, Kevin Ayers and The Whole World como bajista.
Escuchar audio

A Conversation with John Altman: "You cut the cloth to fit the suit!" You know his music (George Michael, Monty Python, James Bond, Simple Minds, Rod Stewart, Prefab Sprout, Tina Turner & Barry White, Diana Ross, Bjork….to cite a scant few) but likely, not his name. Dubbed “Hidden Man” by Python member Terry Gillam, John Altman is an Emmy award winning British composer, arranger, conductor – and saxophonist (Peter Green, Hot Chocolate, Van Morrison, Amy Winehouse, John Martyn, Kevin Ayers…to cite another scant few). Hosts David C. Gross and Tom Semioli talk with this "unknown" icon who forged an indelible identity among the elite in rock, jazz, film, and television as detailed in his must-read autobiography Hidden Man: My Many Musical Lives (Equinox Publications).John Altman-The Hidden Man Playlist
And now for something completely different. This mix is a collection of instrumental tunes from the progressive rock sub-genre known as The Canterbury Scene. According to Wikipedia: The Canterbury scene (or Canterbury sound) was a musical scene centered around the city of Canterbury, Kent, England during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Associated with progressive rock, the term describes a loosely-defined, improvisational style that blended elements of jazz, rock, and psychedelia. The Canterbury scene is largely defined by a set of musicians and bands with intertwined members. "The real essence of 'Canterbury Sound' is the tension between complicated harmonies, extended improvisations, and the sincere desire to write catchy pop songs." "In the very best Canterbury music...the musically silly and the musically serious are juxtaposed in an amusing and endearing way." The bands most often associated with this sound are Soft Machine, Caravan, Gong, Hatfield & the North, Egg, & National Health. And some of the artists include Robert Wyatt, Kevin Ayers, Allan Holdsworth, Steve Hillage, Phil Miller, Hugh Hopper, Richard Sinclair, Fred Frith and Dave Stewart. I am not a fan of Canterbury tunes that have vocals, which eliminates a lot of stuff by Caravan and some Soft Machine. So that's why this mix sticks with instrumental tracks. Listening to this set it's easy to hear the similarities between the bands. I discovered the Canterbury Scene when I was in college, listening to Bill Bruford(drummer for Yes & King Crimson) solo material. His keyboardist was Dave Stewart who played with Egg, Hatfield & The North, and National Health. I loved Bruford's solo stuff, especially "One of a Kind" so that lead me to listen to anything that Stewart was involved in. This mix opens and closes with two tracks featuring Dave Stewart and two of my favorites in the genre. I hope you enjoy this little diversion from the usual ambient mixes. It sure was fun digging up all these 1970s classics. Cheers! In this episode we are joined by self-professed "failed musician" and pasta-sauce mogul Loyd Grossman, OBE, to wax nostalgic about the most important years of his illustrious career: those he spent as a contributor to Fusion, Rolling Stone and other American music papers. Loyd reminisces very amusingly about seminal late '60s shows at the Boston tea party, before explaining how he moved to London and reinvented himself as a British national treasure on TV and in every kitchen in the country. He also recounts how he came to play guitar, three times a year, with Jethro Tull. After a digression on the sad passing of Fairport Convention's original singer Judy Dyble, Loyd joins his hosts in hearing clips from a 1982 audio interview with Queen's Brian May in which that poodle-headed plank-spanker describes, among other things , working with David Bowie on the classic 'Under Pressure'. Barney drags Loyd into a discussion of the wrath heaped upon his compatriots the (Dixie) Chicks, whose new album Gaslighter affords the opportunity to examine the close links between country music and hyper-patriotism. Loyd turns out to be a country fan and gives a special thumbs-up to the Chicks' defiant 2006 song 'Not Ready To Make Nice'.
