What standards seem to guide your conduct? What stories shape your sense of the world and your place in it? What stories shape your sense of what it is to be a human being? What kinds of responses to the world's suffering do you have the most hope for? These are just a few of the big questions we explored with Dr. Ryan McAnnally-Linz in this conversation. They're the kinds of questions he explores with his colleagues Miroslav Volf and Matthew Croasmun at Yale together, in their book LIFE WORTH LIVING and in a number of other settings. Ryan McAnnally-Linz is a systematic theologian and Associate Director of the Yale Center for Faith & Culture. He works at the intersection of theology, ethics, and cultural criticism. Ryan co-authored Public Faith in Action with Miroslav Volf. Dr. McAnnally-Linz also co-authored the book we discuss in this episode, Life Worth Living: A Guide to What Matters Most. He co-edited The Joy of Humility and Envisioning the Good Life. Ryan also contributes to the excellent podcast For the Life of the World. And his scholarly articles have appeared in a broad range of publications. This week as our actors and writers are still waiting to get paid what they deserve by Hollywood. The new film, Drive Away Dolls has been delayed until next February. As this film is directed by one of the Coen brothers, in this case Ethan we'll be focusing on another Ceon Brothers films Episode with the help of another returning guest, Scott and Shelly from the The Film Obsessed Couple.Warning we will be talking SPOILERSScott and Shelly's pick is a stone cold comedy classic in my eyes, The Big Lebowski. On this one we talk about just how funny this film is from almost every character. We talk about how the films story doesn't really matter and how it's presented that way on purpose because the characters are so funny. Plus we talk Jesus, The Jesus. We're starting off Season 2 with the Coens' biggest cult hit. The Big Lebowski has spawned its own festival, its own religion, and has taken on a life of its own since it was released in 1999. In some ways, it's larger than the whole Coen oeuvre, but where does it fit in? And do you have to be on drugs to fully appreciate it? We test this theory by all being in the same room for the first time and partaking or cannabis and White Russians. We're joined by podcaster and co-host of Mental Platypus, Jared Duran - the biggest Lebowski fan we know. It's our messiest and most freewheelin' episode to date. In the course of 180-some-odd seconds, Dan lays out the history and proper preparation technique of the cocktail canon's most slovenly standout — a middling, uncomplicated cream drink from the mid-20th century that would likely have faded into obscurity had it not been plucked from a room crowded with milkshake-like beverages of the era and ushered into the spotlight by Jeff Bridges in the 1998 movie, "The Big Lebowski." We recommend listening while wearing sunglasses and a bathrobe, and perhaps a rug that ties the room together. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The impact that Blake Snyder's Save the Cat® book series has had on Hollywood screenwriting is incalculable. Rarely does a book change the way screenwriters approach story and structure. In his best-selling book, Save the Cat! Goes to the Movies: The Screenwriter's Guide to Every Story Ever Told, Blake Snyder provided 50 “beat sheets” to 50 films, mostly studio-made.Now his student, screenwriter and novelist Salva Rubio applies Blake's principles to 50 independent, auteur, European, and cult films (again with 5 beat sheets for each of Blake's 10 genres in the book Save the Cat!® Goes to the Indies: The Screenwriters Guide to 50 Films from the Masters. If you're a moviegoer, you'll discover a language to analyze film and understand how filmmakers can effectively reach audiences. If you're a writer, this book reveals how those who came before you tackled the same challenges you are facing with the films you want to write. Writing a “rom-com”? Check out the “Buddy Love” chapter for a “beat for beat” dissection of Before Sunrise, The Reader, Blue Is the Warmest Color, and more to see how Linklater and Krizan, David Hare, and Kechiche and Lacroix structured their films.Scripting a horror film? Read the “Monster in the House” section and discover how 28 Days Later and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre are the same movie – and what you need to do to write a scary story that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats.Want to execute a great mystery? Go to the “Whydunit” chapter and learn about the “dark turn” that's essential to the heroes of The Big Lebowski, The French Connection, and Michael Clayton.Want your protagonist to go up against an evil “institution”? Consider how Mamet handled Glengarry Glen Ross and Tarantino's famed Pulp Fiction.Writing a “Superhero” story? See how Susannah Grant structured Erin Brockovich, Anderson & Baumbach worked out Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Gilliam & Stoppard & McKeown laid the foundation for Brazil. With these 50 beat sheets, you'll see how “hitting the beats” creates stories that resonate the world over for these outstanding writers—and how you can follow in their footsteps.Salva Rubio is a novelist, screenwriter, and author. He has been nominated at the Spanish Goya Awards for Best Animation Feature. As a graphic novel writer, some of his works have been published in America, including Monet, Itinerant of Light (nominated for an Eisner Award), and The Photographer of Mauthausen. Film writer, editor, and podcaster Jake Tropila joins from Los Angeles to discuss the Coen Brothers' 1998 comedy 'The Big Lebowski', starring Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Though middlingly received both critically and commercially upon release, the film has gone on to become a genuine cult classic, launching a cottage industry of fan screenings, conventions, and even a religion. We discuss the film's patchwork of influences, including larger-than-life characters withing the Coens' orbit and the works of author Raymond Chandler, especially as adapted by Robert Altman for his 1973 film 'The Long Goodbye'. Then we discuss the film's unrivaled cast, including a superb John Goodman, who turns in an awards-caliber performance as the gun-toting, militant bowling enthusiast Walter Sobchak. Finally, we discuss the film's windy, inarticulable plot, and the way that its mechanics might conceal a deeper level of criticism about the sociopolitical landscape of America on the eve of The End of History.
