The Coen Bros. have attracted a wide following and have been rewarded with Oscars and other honors. Some of their films such as Fargo, The Big Lebowski, and No Country for Old Men are cult favorites and box office hits. Yet this team of filmmaking brothers remains misunderstood in some critical circles, partly because, like John Ford, they mischievously refuse to explain themselves to interviewers, preferring to let their work speak for itself. Ethan and Joel Coen also delight in unsettling cinematic conventions and confounding audiences while raising disturbing questions about human nature. Mixing film genres and styles, playing with narrative in postmodernist ways, the Coens' films display shocking tonal shifts as they blend comedy and drama and, most controversially, comedy and violence. This potent mélange of themes and stylistic approaches makes the Coens' films adventurous, unpredictable probes into social anxieties and reflections on the omnipresence of evil in the modern world. In their trenchant satire, these brilliant writer-directors are heirs to Preston Sturges and Billy Wilder, and as satirists tend to do, the Coens sometimes provoke audience anger and incomprehension along with enjoyment of their penchant for black comedy. In The Whole Durn Human Comedy: Life According to the Coen Brothers (Anthem Press, 2022), film historian and critic Joseph McBride jousts with the Coens' detractors while defining the filmmakers' freshness and originality. The quirkily individualistic Coens are the kind of personal filmmakers the increasingly conglomerated American cinema rarely fosters anymore, a distinction partly attributable to their following in Europe and their partial financing by European sources. This critical study goes beyond the often-superficial and confused nature of Coen criticism to illuminate their artistic personalities and contributions to cinematic culture.

in 1988 Mike Piersante was a young drummer in the LA area. That same year he would be hired as a studio runner at Sunset Sound, a moment that would be step 1 of the rest of his life and that would set a path for decades to come. Mike received a compliment one afternoon from Sunset Sound founder Tutti Camarata, stating that he would be a "great engineer" one day. That set Mike on fire and would do everything he could and then some to do just that... become a "great engineer" one day. After getting picked up by T Bone Burnett in the early 90's to be his engineer, Mike would go on to work with the biggest artist's, bands and films of all time. Recording albums for Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Robert Plant, John Mellencamp among so many others. Not to mention the films Mike has engineered including Walk The Line, The Big Lebowski, O Brother Where Art Thou & Inside Llewyn Davis. In 1998 the Coen brothers released The Big Lebowski and the theaters were half-empty. However, the film has since spurred a cult-like following revolving around its protagonist, The Dude; a dopey but profound conscientious objector to all human conflict with his own special brand of zen. Part slacker manifesto, part sun-drenched noir, the film follows his quest to receive penance for a soiled rug and unravels into a wild goose chase involving all sorts of inherent vice.In this classic episode from the Pop & Locke vault, Julian Sanchez and Akiva Malamet join us to discuss the essence of the Coen Brothers' famous character, the hidden nods to Wagner, and what the film has to say about nihilist philosophy. Rory Sutherland is a British advertising executive who became fascinated with behavioral science. Between his TED talks, books and articles, he has become one of the field's greatest proponents. Rory is currently the Executive Creative Director of OgilvyOne, after gigs as vice-chairman of Ogilvy Group UK and co-founder of the Behavioural Sciences Practice, part of the Ogilvy & Mather group of companies. He is the author of The Spectator's The Wiki Man column and his most recent book, which we highly recommend, is Alchemy: The Dark Art and Curious Science of Creating Magic in Brands, Business, and Life. Our discussion with Rory was original published in January 2020, but Rory's evergreen insights continue to be popular with our listeners so we decided to republish this episode. You can also listen to Rory discuss his latest book Transport for Humans: Are We Nearly There Yet? alongside his co-writer Pete Dyson, in episode 290. We start this discussion with Rory by asking him about his book and some of his insights from it. His approach to advertising, marketing and product design is informed by his ability to look for the things that aren't there. He once described a solution to improving customer satisfaction on the Chunnel Train between London and Paris by suggesting that a billion dollars would be better spent on supermodel hosts in the cars than on reducing ride time by 15 minutes. He's a terrifically insightful thinker. Our conversation ran amok down all sorts of rabbit holes, as expected, including ergodicity, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's “The Silver Blaze,” high-end audio and the dietary habits of the world-famous runner, Usain Bolt. In Kurt and Tim's Grooving Session, we discuss some of our favorite takeaways from Rory's conversation including, “The Opposite of a Good Idea is a Good Idea” and others. And finally, Kurt teed up the Bonus Track with a final reflection and recap of the key points we discussed. As always, we would be grateful if you would write us a quick review. It helps us get noticed by other folks who are interested in podcasts about behavioral science. It will only take 27 seconds. Thank you, and we appreciate your help. © 2022 Behavioral Grooves   Links Rory Sutherland: https://ogilvy.co.uk/people/rorys “Alchemy: The Dark Art and Curious Science of Creating Magic in Brands, Business, and Life”: https://amzn.to/3xbibt3 “Transport for Humans: Are We Nearly There Yet?”: https://amzn.to/3cZPyIy Episode 290, Transport Your Thinking; Why We Need To Reframe Travel | Rory Sutherland & Pete Dyson: https://behavioralgrooves.com/episode/transport-rory-sutherland-pete-dyson/ “Friction”: https://www.rogerdooley.com/books/friction/ Murray Gell-Mann, PhD: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murray_Gell-Mann Robin Williams “Scottish Golf”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jx8TzR1-n4Q Don Draper: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Draper Ergodicity: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ergodicity John James Cowperthwaite: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_James_Cowperthwaite SatNav: https://www.macmillandictionary.com/us/dictionary/american/satnav Daniel Kahneman, PhD: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Kahneman What You See is All There Is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thinking,_Fast_and_Slow Arthur Conan-Doyle: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Conan_Doyle Sherlock Holmes “Silver Blaze”: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Adventure_of_Silver_Blaze Tim Houlihan's Blog on “Silver Blaze”: https://tinyurl.com/ufumkj6 Ben Franklin T-Test: https://tinyurl.com/wocdsdk Volkswagen Fighter: https://tinyurl.com/qpyqh87 David Ogilvy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Ogilvy_(businessman) Jock Elliot: https://www.theguardian.com/news/2005/dec/01/guardianobituaries.media Battle of Leyte Gulf: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Leyte_Gulf Croft Audio: http://www.croftacoustics.co.uk/main.html Mu-So single speaker: https://www.naimaudio.com/mu-so WFMT Chicago: https://www.wfmt.com/ TK Maxx: https://www.tkmaxx.com/uk/en/ Berlin Hotel with Big Lebowski: https://www.michelbergerhotel.com/en/ Shure: https://www.shure.com/en-US/products/microphones?lpf[top][types][]=microphones Zoom: https://zoom.us/ Satisficing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satisficing Usain Bolt: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usain_Bolt Sheena Iyengar, PhD: https://www.sheenaiyengar.com/ Jelly Jar Study: https://tinyurl.com/oo6g6eb Big Band Music: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_band   Musical Links Aretha Franklin: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aretha_Franklin Southern California Community Choir: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_California_Community_Choir Abba: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ABBA Felix Mendelssohn: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felix_Mendelssohn George Frideric Handel: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Frideric_Handel Johann Sebastian Bach: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Sebastian_Bach Johann Christian Bach: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Christian_Bach

Those Wonderful People Out There In The Dark

Hey man, I love a good film noir! I went on and on about it for Double Indemnity but allow me to recap. Moody lighting, voice-over narration, a femme fatale, suffocating fatalism, nihilistic conclusion with no apparent redeeming social value. Oh yeah! That's why I'm so keyed up to present a noir this episode that is right out of the school of Raymond Chandler, that typifies the genre I love so much. It's The Big………Lebowski. You thought I was going to say The Big Sleep? Come on! I announced it on the last pod to break the gloom brought on by The Loneliness Of The Long-Distance Runner. And it was in the title block today. So much for a startling reveal…email: David@thosewonderfulpeople.comWebsite and blog: www.thosewonderfulpeople.comIG: @thosewonderfulpeopleTwitter: @FilmsInTheDark

Welcome to the Munsons at the Movies podcast. Each episode we delve into the filmography and impact of a randomly selected actor. In this episode, we explore the career of John Turturro. Best known his roles as Jesus Quintana in The Big Lebowski (1998), Pete in O Brother, Where Art Thou (2000), and Barton Fink (1991), Turturro is one of the most versatile actors in Hollywood. Joined once again by Dames Marvs of Loch 22 Productions, we do our best to survive without Rigby by discussing how Turturro inspired a former President's relationship, his numerous projects with filmmakers like Spike Lee, the Coen Brothers, and Adam Sandler, his performances in the non-athletic sports movies, and why he's so underrated but appreciated by the Munsons and his peers. Where does Turturro rank on the Munson Meter? Listen to find out.

John Turturro is an acting legend. He is an actor that many directors like to work with, including both Spike Lee and the Coen Brothers. This year he is up for an Emmy for his role as Irving in the mind-bending sci-fi office drama Severance. When he last joined Bullseye, he had just starred in the movie Gloria Bell, directed by the Chilean filmmaker Sebastian Lelio. Turturro shared how he nailed down the subtleties and complexities of playing a character that might seem like an average joe in Gloria Bell. Plus, he also shared stories from his time working on some true classics like Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing and the Coen Brothers' The Big Lebowski.

New episode up now, man! We watched The Big Lebowski and started right in with quoting this cult classic. We discussed the character of The Dude and his place in the story, as well as examining the other very Coen-y characters that fill out The Dude's world. We get into the complications of Walter's personality and the military industrial complex, Donny's enigmatic qualities, and how framing the movie with The Stranger‘s voiceover allows this to be just one of many odd stories in The Dude's life. We also discover some surprising similarities with Phillip Marlowe, as well as try to follow the many different plotlines and mysteries that overlap while The Dude is along for the ride. Katy was again influenced by Empire Magazine, Carrie hates limo people, Maddy tells a story about a bath disaster, and Mack wants to assault a child. We also stress the importance of following the money to understand motivation, think The Dude would totally be into ASMR, come up with a cool business-type card idea, and fully agree that a good rug really ties a room together. Listen to hear us talk about marmots, sex robots, George Clooney, gross bathrooms, and more! Like, right on, man! After starting a house painting business at the peak of the housing bubble, Jimmy Morrison drove over 35,000 miles interviewing people who predicted the crash, resulting in two documentaries. The 1st film looks at the causes of The Housing Bubble and other crises ranging from the great depression to the dot com bubble. The 2nd film starts with the bailouts in 2008 and shows The Bigger Bubble that the economy has become today. The world premiere of The Housing Bubble was at the Anthem Film Festival in 2018. Legendary investors Jim Rogers, Marc Faber, Doug Casey, and Peter Schiff star in the films alongside economists Joseph Salerno, Ron Paul, Robert Murphy, Jeff Herbener, Mark Thornton, Roger Garrison, and Patrick Barron. Financial writers Jim Grant, David Stockman, and Gene Epstein join the cast, as well as Peter Wallison, a dissenting member of Congress's Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission. Naomi Brockwell narrates the film, and NY Times bestselling author Tom Woods co-wrote the project. Jimmy entered the political world as a lobbyist in 2008, when he started Iowa Patients for Medical Marijuana. The organization is now the largest in the state with over 7,000 members and is known for lobbying the first pharmacy board in the country to support medical marijuana, which the bipartisan board passed unanimously. He was the State Director of Iowa for Gary Johnson's Republican Presidential campaign in 2012. He has lectured on economics in 6 countries, including at the Warsaw School of Economics and the University of Toronto. While in Estonia, Jimmy advised their Social Minister, Finance Minister, and Prime Minister. Jimmy has filmed 4 Grammy winners and had his work screened at the Minneapolis St. Paul Film Festival and the Anthem Film Festival. His music video "Aperture" was selected by Oscar winning director David Lynch for a grant. Let Us Disagree Productions released their first feature length film last year when Rocksteppy premiered in LA and NYC. The film features cameos with David Lynch, the dude from The Big Lebowski, and the Farrelly Brothers, who directed comedies like Dumb & Dumber and There's Something About Mary. Jimmy ran a camera unit on the film and served as Executive Producer. Source: Let Us Disagree Productions --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-aidan-byrne0/support
