In this episode, New Books Network host Nina Bo Wagner talks to Matthew Hongoltz-Hetling about his recently published book The Ghost Lab: How Bigfoot Hunters, Mediums, and Alien Enthusiasts Are Wrecking Science (PublicAffairs, 2025). They talk about the process of writing the book, including delving deep into the local paranomal community in New Hampshire. The book contrasts profound institutional distrust effecting higher education policy and scientific literacy, with a desperate grapple for community through paranormal beliefs. It portrays the Kitt Research Initiative, established in 2010, with the mission to use scientific method to document the existence of spirits. Founder Andy Kitt was unafraid — perhaps eager — to offend other paranormal investigators by exposing the fraudulence of their less advanced techniques. Kitt's efforts attracted flocks of psychics, alien abductees, witches, mediums, ghost hunters, UFOlogists, cryptozoologists and warlocks from all over New England, and the world. Hongoltz-Hetling brings our attention to the exponential growth of new age beliefs in the United States, with the potential to be the largest religion in the nation by 2050 at current rates. He argues that it is time for institutions in both science and policy to sit up, take notice, and engage with paranormal beliefs instead of marginalizing, or worse, ostracizing them. Wagner and Hongoltz-Hetling touch on mental health, domestic violence, satanic panic and capturing paranormal orbs. The conversation is sure to provide fascinating insight into unconventional and riveting science journalism. Learn more about your ad choices. In episode 493 I interview some patrons and students talk about how the recent Venus and Mars retrograde periods went for them, and to demonstrate a principle I discovered about how retrogrades can describe the unfolding of a sequence of events over an extended period of time. One of my unique perspectives on Venus and Mars retrogrades is that they are not just the period when the planet is moving backwards, but instead represent an extended stay in one or two signs of the zodiac. This long transit often coincides with the unfolding of a sequence of events over several months, frequently centered on the topics of the whole sign houses the retrograde occupies. Now that the extended retrograde period ranges have been completed this month, with Venus finally departing from its retrograde sign of Aries and Mars departing from its retrograde sign of Leo, I wanted to document and demonstrate this principle by sharing some real-life stories. I'm joined by several students from my courses and patrons of the podcast who share their experiences of how these transits played out in their lives. In particular we explore three specific ways that I have identified about how retrogrades can manifest: Retrogrades that represent the unfolding of a sequence of events that play out over an extended period of time. Retrogrades that cross a sign boundary and connect two sets of topics across the whole sign houses involved. When Venus and Mars are retrograde in different signs and the topics of both houses they are in become relevant. Through these discussions, we see clear examples of how these extended retrograde periods timed significant life stories, from relationship changes and career shifts to health matters and dealing with family. This episode serves as a final case study to substantiate the theoretical framework I outlined in previous forecasts, providing concrete examples to help astrologers learn how to apply this concept to future retrogrades. Cool features don't make a story. Emotional stakes do. And no one knew that better than Knight Rider, a show where a talking car and a lone hero made 80s TV unforgettable. In this episode, we're pulling lessons from that retro icon with the help of our special guest, Ashley Sasnett, Senior Director of Content Strategy at EquifaxTogether, we explore what B2B marketers can learn from classic archetypes, character-driven branding, and the power of giving your product a little personality (or maybe even a voice of its own).About our guest, Ashley SasnettAshley Sasnett is the Senior Director of Content Strategy at Equifax. She is an award-winning, dynamic, and energetic digital marketing strategist with an extensive background in content, social media, mobile, campaign design and execution, and audience development. Ashley is a data-driven leader who embraces social listening and digital analytics to glean insights to solve business problems.Ashley is a marketer who humanizes Brands with social media, digital content, and influencers, creating connections with clients and prospects. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Knight Rider:Storytelling makes the features matter. Knight Rider didn't win fans because KITT had voice activation or turbo boost. It won fans because those features served a bigger story. A story about a hero resurrected to right wrongs with his talking car by his side. Ashley urges marketers to take the same approach. Don't just list functionality. Show how it fits into a compelling narrative. Ashley says, “That's a story. And so I think for me, when I'm thinking about how do you create marketing that really sticks with people is... you need to really pull 'em away from like brochureware.” When tech serves emotion, people remember it. So build the story before you build the spec sheet.Embrace the buddy system. At its heart, Knight Rider was a buddy story—man and machine. That relationship brought emotional grounding to an otherwise tech-heavy premise. Ashley points out how powerful that dynamic is in marketing, too. Even the most advanced products need a human emotion. Ashley explains, “You gotta give him a friend… give them a buddy to keep their humanity, keep them connected so they can go out and be the hero they're supposed to be.” Your product might be brilliant. But it's the companion—the story, the use case, the customer—that brings it to life.Make it iconic, not just informative. KITT wasn't just a car. It had a voice, a silhouette, and a sound you could recognize anywhere. It was branding genius and completely unforgettable. Ashley sees this as a blueprint for marketers: features don't stick unless they're wrapped in a sensory identity people can latch onto. Ashley says, “When the car is driving up…that sound is like Darth Vader's voice. Everyone knows that sound. It's so ownable to the show.” Don't just inform. Design your marketing to be remembered. Own your marketing.Quotes*“When I'm thinking about how do you create marketing that really sticks with people is it's, yeah, you gotta give 'em the AI and the voice of recognition and the bulletproof and the hot car thing. You gotta give them features and functionality, but you need to really pull them away from like brochureware, right? Don't take a product sheet and turn it into a webpage. We're so past that. Because a lot of the time, people are going through and checking boxes for that stuff, but they're not getting the use case, the value prop, the differentiation that's wrapped around those features and functionality. And when you do have something that's different, doubling down on that, so you can stand out, you're gonna do that in storytelling, and you always have these big story arcs.”*“ Market your marketing. The challenge that you've got is throughout your organization, people are seeing your marketing, but they're seeing it more as users. They're seeing the end product, they're not always understanding the strategies behind it. And I love a good dashboard. I love a good metric, I love a good deck, but you don't wanna turn them into crutches. You need to have that elevator pitch…And I think marketers, internally, we get so caught up in the bits and bobs and the how it's made, and we like to geek out on that stuff. We forget that really everybody just needs three or four bullet points… I think that's where it's funny 'cause we don't do for ourselves as we should do for our company or for our customers. Which is market your marketing, make sure people are understanding why you're doing what you're doing and how.”*“Stories are pretty basic…Things were cranking along, and then you hit a stormy patch, and now things are better because you use this product. The stories that you unearth in there is how they've used that product, but you've got that big story arc that kind of pulls it all together…. What is the conflict? Who's the protagonist? And then what does that or resolution look like? And when you're able to do that, you're gonna have a fuller, clearer picture for the audience to really glom onto. Because unless you're in the room with them telling that story, you've gotta let your digital content do a lot of work.”Time Stamps[00:55] Meet Ashley Sasnett, Sr. Director, Content Strategy at Equifax[01:15] Why Knight Rider?[03:13] The Role of Sr. Director of Content Strategy at Equifax[05:21] Origins of Knight Rider[10:37] B2B Marketing Lessons from Knight Rider[37:42] Equifax's Content Strategy[41:26] Creating Memorable Content[43:15] Great Current Marketing Campaigns[47:37] Final Thoughts and TakeawaysLinksConnect with Ashley on LinkedInLearn more about EquifaxAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. In 2010, in a small New Hampshire town, next door to a copy center and framing shop, a ghost lab opened. The Kitt Research Initiative's mission was to use the scientific method to document the existence of spirits. Founder Andy Kitt was known as a straight-shooter; he was unafraid—perhaps eager—to offend other paranormal investigators by exposing the fraudulence of their less advanced techniques. But when KRI started to lose money, Kitt began to seek funding from the paranormal community, attracting flocks of psychics, alien abductees, witches, mediums, ghost hunters, UFOlogists, cryptozoologists and warlocks from all over New England, and the world. And there were plenty of them around. Matthew Hongoltz-Hetling, author of the new book The Ghost Lab, explains the wild ecosystem of paranormal profiteers and consumers through the astonishing story of what happened in this one small town. He also maps the trends of declining scientific literacy, trust in institutions, and the diffusion of a culture that has created space for armies of pseudoscientists to step into the minds of an increasingly credulous public. Matthew Hongoltz-Hetling is a freelance journalist specializing in narrative features and investigative reporting. He was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. He is the author of A Libertarian Walks Into a Bearand It Sounds Like a Quack. His new book is The Ghost Lab: How Bigfoot Hunters, Mediums, and Alien Enthusiasts are Wrecking Science.
"Hast du schon gehört...?" Tratschen bereitet vielen Menschen Freude, und dennoch macht man es nur verstohlen und lässt sich ungern dabei ertappen. Dabei ist Tratsch der soziale Kitt in vielen Büros und stärkt unsere Beziehungen mit unseren Mitmenschen. Darum, wie man richtig tratscht und wo die Grenzen zum toxischen Verhalten liegen, geht in einer neuen Folge "Besser leben".
Today we are sitting with one of our East coast brothers in retired Braintree Massachusetts PD and founder of the KITT Foundation, Billy Cushing. Billy was a 17-year veteran of the Braintree Police Department where he served as a patrol K9 Handler for 10 of those years. He is a two-time recipient of the Geroge Hannah Award for Valor among other honors. In this episode Billy tells the story of his K9 partner, Kitt, and the bond and partnership they shared. On June 4th, 2021 Billy, Kitt, and backup officers responded to a domestic dispute at an apartment complex on McCusker Drive, in which the suspect fled to a wooded area. Billy and Kitt began their trek to locate the suspect when they were ambushed by the suspect, who was hiding. Kitt, upon locating the suspect, advanced into the hail of gunfire. Kitt was struck by 3 fatal bullets and Billy was hit 5 times and Officer Donoghue was hit once during this gunfight. The suspect was eliminated during this gunbattle. Billy was critically injured during this incident but recovered to start a new mission and journey to honor his hero partner Kitt. In the wake of Kitts death Billy organized a Foundation, named the KITT Foundation, that would connect members of the public interested in providing support to K9 Teams across the country. Dallas Police K9 Handler, Scott Jay sat in as a cohost. HTTPS://K9KITTFOUNDATION.COM

Kitt of ICT Concepts held a space afterwards where Michael graciously joined. He tooks some questions and then went over some of the lessons from the previous space that failed to record properly. Michael also confirms a new PD array that one of the students identified on their own. Consider this part of the previous space. Michael then goes into a long discussion about what he sees coming to the US/World in the coming year based on his observations and how it will affect the market. He also provides some advice on how to prepare.audio download: original

Just finished Fearless by Lauren Roberts and surprise surprise — I've got things to say. In this episode, I walk you through all my pre-reading theories (some solid, some embarrassingly wrong), and how this book did the most when it came to plot twists.Let's talk about Kitt. Did I hope for the best? Sure. Did I believe in him? Kinda. Did I like him in book one? Absolutely not. So when he pulled that ending… I wasn't shocked. I didn't like it — but it did make sense. His villain arc? Foreshadowed. We just didn't wanna see it.Also, let's not ignore how everyone in this series keeps using the word “pretend” like it's a coping mechanism. Kai and Paedyn pretended their way through a whole romance. But Kitt? He's the true pretend game winner. I also touch on the romance, the things I did like, and why this book somehow manages to make me mad and impressed at the same time.Come yell with me.

It's our 150th episode and we're celebrating by returning to the show we did in our very first episode, Knight Rider (1982-86). This time we're looking at the second season two-parter, Goliath. Along the way, Paul reveals what he keeps under his car seat, Colin tries some mental mind reading and we both remember our brass instrument fingering.
Jeff Manville, the first selectman of Southbury, was on the phone with Chaz and AJ this morning to talk about the town's lawsuit over trees. Allegedly, over 100 trees were illegally removed by a resident, and may owe around $9 million in fines. (0:00) In Dumb Ass News, a mascot pushed a 9-year-old kid to the ground, and says the kid started the physical interaction. (15:39) A KITT replica, from Knight Rider, was parked at the station parking this morning, as Miguel from Rad Stallions and Brad from CT Movie Cars were in studio with Chaz and AJ. The Tribe called in their favorite movie and TV cars, while AJ re-enacted his favorite scenes. (21:06) Danny Mac, a local legend and former PLR street teamer, was in studio with Chaz and AJ this morning to talk about the Milford Veterans. Danny is also (most importantly) a Navy vet, and brought some other veterans in with him to talk about their time serving in Vietnam, and attending Woodstock. (31:13) In Dumb Ass News, raw cacao and chocolate are very different things. This kid had to learn that the hard way. (42:13)
I finally read Powerless by Lauren Roberts, and let's just say… I went through ALL the emotions. The plot? Meh. The side characters? Forgettable. But Kai? He had me in a chokehold. Kitt, on the other hand? He tested my patience like no other. Join me as I rant, rave, and break down what worked, what didn't, and whether Powerless lives up to the hype!

About 3 years following the loss of her husband, 55-yr-old Kitt reconnected with 53-yr-old Shaun, who she had known in HS. But Shaun was not ready or willing to commit to a serious relationship and went silent, leaving Kitt wondering what had happened. Since then, Kitt met 56-yr-old Mike, and all seemed to be going well. But on the heels of the death of her husband, the recent death of her mother, and Shaun leaving without a word, Kitt is finding it hard to trust again. On this episode of Make Him Wonder, I help Kitt to reframe her thinking and be open to the pace at which Mike is comfortable, so that he can feel safe and trusting, as well.

SEASON 3 EPISODE 84: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:50) SPECIAL COMMENT: Happy Insurrection Day, when Republicans will certify the election of a “president” who is constitutionally ineligible to hold the office according to the 3rd clause of the 14th Amendment and the Electoral Count Reform Act of 2022 and who himself fomented the assault four years ago that ended our conceit about the peaceful transfer of power. The illegitimate president’s Republican whores and servants may in fact trudge to the capitol through a blizzard to make this prostitution of democracy official The Democrats? They won’t say anything because this didn’t TEST well as a campaign ad and their flaccid willingness to risk anything in our defense is further deflated by their perception that this is a fait accompli and since it is a fait accompli ESPECIALLY because of their own cowardice they now have to do their best to compromise, and obey in advance, a group of bandits and pirates posing as a presidential administration, whose only desire TO compromise is to compromise Democrats and the Free Press and Reality and democracy itself. These are some of those Republicans: Freshman Congressman Riley Moore – “My constituents have sent me here to this town not to work with Democrats but to destroy their agenda." “We asked everyone not to leak. Please for god’s sake do not give inside information to the enemy” that's from the LEAD Republican in the House, the CREEPIEST Republican in the House since Denny Hastert, Mike Johnson and I don’t know if by “the enemy” he means the Democrats or the media or both or the temptations of his anti-porn app, and I no longer care. This is Insurrection Day and we all KNOW what the Republicans would be doing today in the mirror version of this grim reality; if they were in charge and Trump were in office and had presidential immunity and a new president was about to sign off on putting him in jail and it would be what they actually did four years ago today only they wouldn’t bother to try to be subtle or legal about it (they’d be gassing up the tanks). AND NO, JUDGE JUAN MERCHAN IS NO HERO. He too is obeying in advance. Along with the Washington Post, squeezing out cartoonist Ann Telnaes. And Brian Stelter, covering up for Fox News. And the media soft-pedaling the Vegas bomber's hopes to see all Democrats murdered, and Congressman Tom Suozzi, and soon-to-disappear Senator Kyrsten Sinema. B-Block (29:30) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Those memorializing Aaron Brown without including the incident about his refusal to cover The Challenger explosion; Congresswoman Nancy Mace and "Gunther Eagleman" who only read the headline; and the meticulous Oliver Darcy who only gets mentioned here because he asked a question that really traumatized me: What will Olivia Nuzzi do in 2025? (42:14) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Remember dear Flaco? The majestic owl liberated from the Central Park Zoo? There is an extraordinary new book about him. And from an old book: remember the Ash Heaps in "The Great Gatsby"? They were real and you'll never believe what was built were they used to sit. C-Block (52:00) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Young Tippy needs the same surgery my new pup Kitt just got, and we need your help to pay for it. (55:30) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: It's an actors' story that invokes Trump, Orson Welles, The Odd Couple, Mike Nichols - and me? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
