After chatting a bit with him during conferences the past year, we had to invite composer and performer John Robert Matz onto the show to chat about what he's been up to lately! He talks about the score for Tchia but also about things back in the day (indie game dev!) and that GAH staple: conspicuous consumption! This week I chat with John about scoring for games, Tchia, and so much more…
It's always a great time having John Robert Matz on to talk about his music. This time, we discuss Tchia, an open-world adventure of a young girl on tropical islands inspired by the real location, New Caledonia. The music is such a joy. John Robert captured a colorful, simple and memorable island vibe with his soundtrack. The game is fantastic too. This isn't some hundred hour open world sprawl either; it's digestible and easy to take breaks. Music is woven into the gameplay is unique ways, and you can play chromatic triads on your ukulele using the controller. You can support Level with Emily on Patreon. Join us on Discord for free. Grant "Stemage" Henry is a composer, a session guitarist and a remixer. In 2003, Grant created Metroid Metal (you can still download all the tracks, just follow the link), and so began his lengthy career in the VGM remix community. Grant and I don't talk too much about remixing, but we focus on a couple of original projects: his original soundtrack for Card of Darkness, a mobile game from the creator of Adventure Time and a solo project he released in 2016 called Narrowband. I loved talking with Grant about (some of) his original music! We also briefly chat about his music for the League of Legends spinoff called Hextech Mayhem. The Game Brass are a team of seven musicians on a mission to share video game music in a brassy way. Six of them are performers: John Robert Matz (who's been a recurring Level guest), Robby Duguay, Danny Flam, Daniel Romberger, Alex Hill and John Stacy. The seventh, Thomas Kresge, is The Game Brass's arranger and producer/audio engineer. You can read more about each of them here. They live scattered about North America and all are professional musicians (although not necessarily as performers). They've made several outstanding albums in the past, please consider supporting them by purchasing their music. And/or buy a shirt (or a patch or other fine merch)! THE ALBUM, by the way, is Brass Effect; 2 hours of covers of space-themed music from games, and it's well worth a listen. It includes several talented guest performances and a variety of styles, from hardcore brass ensemble writing to rock. You can find a playlist and support Level with Emily on Patreon. Join us on Discord to discuss the episode! This is music by John Robert Matz for Ambition: A Minuet in Power, an adventure game/interactive visual novel with all sorts of romance options, set during the ramp-up of the French Revolution in the 1780s. John Robert's music is also set in the 1780s, the height of the Classical era in music, and composers like Wolfgang Mozart and Joseph Haydn were popular in France even if they weren't of French origin themselves. Two things: a neighbor started mowing their lawn right as we began our interview. The noise from the mower will stop eventually! And I forgot to hit record on the video, so when you view it on YouTube, it'll be about 20 minutes before the scene kicks in :) You can find a playlist and support Level with Emily on Patreon. Paris, 1789: A young woman arrives in town at the invitation of her beloved, only to discover that he's missing and talk of revolution is swirling through the fashionable salons. In Ambition: A Minuet in Power, created by Joy Manufacturing Co., Yvette relies on her wiles to glean juicy gossip and use it to make connections to upgrade her social status. Composer John Robert Matz has created a pitch-perfect 18th Century soundtrack to accompany all the intrigue and tension of this remarkable era.

Composer John Robert Matz has created a pitch-perfect 18th Century soundtrack to accompany all the intrigue and tension of this remarkable era. John Robert approached writing this ambitious soundtrack by composing it in a traditional way, using an actual manuscript-based program so he could make sure all the parts were correct and the instrumention was period-perfect. He relied on his background as a classical musician, and all those years in the brass section of various orchestras. John Robert wrote the parts for many of his long-time friends, including the Videri String Quartet, oboist Kristin Naigus, Peter Bobinski, double bass, and
Mythgard, created by Rhino Games, imagines a world where Greek and Norse mythological characters collide in a gritty cyber-punk environment centuries in the future. For soundtrack composer John Robert Matz, the game offered the perfect combination of fantasy-ispired music combined with a wash of retro synth sounds. Mythgard tells the story of Percy, who's bored with spending eons in the Underworld, so she decides to venture to the surface only to discover that the human world isn't how she left it at all. There are warring factions, and many of the old gods haven't been seen in millenia. John Robert says the combination of the ancient gods' heroism, combined with the world of the future gave him lots of material to work with, and writing the soundtrack was a great oppportunity to stretch his creative muscles. The soundtrack is available on John Robert's Bandcamp. Episode tracklist: all tracks composed and performed by John Robert Matz, except where noted Mythgard : The Surface World
Taking a summer vacation was a challenge this year, so The Game Brass created their own! Their third full-length album: Brassino Isles Tropical Cruise takes listeners on a voyage to Dragon Roost Island, Treasure Trove Cove, Monkey Island, and many other ports of call. The Game Brass also brought along some friends! They invited a who's who of game music performers to add to the fun. Every track features a different musican or ensemble, including Disco Cactus, Grant Kirkhope, Ocobanda, the Videri String Quartet and many others. I talked with some of The Game Brass about putting the album together: John Robert Matz and Robby Dugay, trumpets, Daniel Romberger, trombone and theramin, John Stacey, horn, Alex Hill, tuba and their arranger, Thomas Kresge. Members of the Game Brass said that not only was putting together the album a lifeline during the pandemic quarantine, creating videos to accompany each track was really fun. The album is available on The Game Brass's Bandcamp, and other
