Long-time listeners of the show may already know what I'm talking about, but newer listeners and/or those who do not remember may be perplexed by what I'm talking about. Well, it will all be explained in the intro to the final of the trilogy (releasing in March). DISCLAIMER: the production value was much worse back in 2019. This week on All Things Nintendo, Brian renders his final verdict on Blasphemous 2, the new challenging Metroidvania that takes inspiration from games like Dead Cells and Dark Souls. After that, we have two interviews with folks who are involved with the music of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, but in very different ways. First up, we talk with Katie Chrzanowski, who you may know as the social media manager for the Sonic the Hedgehog brand. However, she's also the producer of the Sonic Symphony, which was livestreamed in 2021 and is heading up the world tour happening this fall. Then, Brian is joined by Tee Lopes, composer of Sonic Mania and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge. He also happens to be the composer for the upcoming Sonic Superstars. If you'd like to follow Brian on social media, you can do so on his Instagram/Threads @BrianPShea or Twitter @BrianPShea. You can follow Marcus on Twitter: @MarcusStewart7. Grant "Stemage" Henry is a composer, a session guitarist and a remixer. In 2003, Grant created Metroid Metal (you can still download all the tracks, just follow the link), and so began his lengthy career in the VGM remix community. Grant and I don't talk too much about remixing, but we focus on a couple of original projects: his original soundtrack for Card of Darkness, a mobile game from the creator of Adventure Time and a solo project he released in 2016 called Narrowband. I loved talking with Grant about (some of) his original music! We also briefly chat about his music for the League of Legends spinoff called Hextech Mayhem. You can support Level with Emily on Patreon. Join us on Discord for free. Find this conversation on YouTube and Twitter. Show Notes Matt and Kris proudly present the return of the WaveBack Awards, featuring the best of the best in VGM from 2022. The intro music for this episode was Cyclic Oscillations from Super Mega Zero by DDRKirby. Our team tragically overlooked this game until it was too late, so it unfortunately wasn't given any considerations for this year's awards. It's a phenomenal soundtrack though, so we've linked to it here. Blog link: http://videogamegrooves.com/2022/12/26/episode-100-streets-of-rage-4-mr-x-nightmare-traveler-journey-symphony-2022-in-review Scene: an idyllic cabin on the wooded hilltop, piled high with fresh snow. Inside, the glow of a fire illuminates festive nerds surrounded by bearskin rugs, wooly blankets, mugs of mulled cider, and a pile of video game music on vinyl. Their highly-tuned ears mistake the light sounds of snowfall for surface noise on their records, and they fastidiously brush nonexistent imperfections from their prized vinyl in the quest for audio perfection which can never be achieved. And yet all is merry and bright, because the Video Game Grooves podcast is back for the final episode of 2022! While we look forward to tabulating our favorites of the year in coming months, we are joined by Tom Quillfeldt of Laced Records to recap the numbers and preside over the facts and feelings about the year that was. But before we do, we discuss a couple of releases that we just have to blab about. First, Anthony features Streets of Rage 4: Mr. X Nightmare, by Tee Lopes, which is the over-the-top banger-filled musical expansion to the brawler's recent revival. Everyone thrills to the fact that the soundtrack is nothing but hero tracks, but we somehow find a way to single out a couple to feature and we discuss Lopes dynamism, the "maximalist" style used in this release, and speculate where that kind of approach might also be used in the video game music scene. We slide over next to Traveler: A Journey Symphony, by Austin Wintory, which is a Wintory-on-Wintory adaptation of the celebrated thatgamecompany Jawa simulator from a decade hence. But does everyone celebrate it, or are our Journey feelings more complicated than that? We explore and make our way toward the distant mountain... of feelings. Finally we get to the number-crunching and backward-looking for this year. Although we do not pick our favorites (yet), we take a look at some of the trends in genre, publisher, franchise, and other little statistical extractions that we make, thanks to some help from blipblop.net. We hope everyone has a wonderful close to 2022 and we'll see you in 2023! Outro: "Aerial Justice" - Streets of Rage 4: Mr. X Nightmare, by Tee Lopes Image Gallery

Brit wouldn't stop asking for it, so we should probably deliver. Arguably one of the most requested episodes EVER is selected to occupy the special 100th slot, and of course we spend more time talking things that aren't Tee Lopes than we do talking about the man himself. But there's music! The chatter's okay too...

I have a question for Ian this episode (sorry, Kyle!). The ending of Sonic Mania, with classic Sonic being whisked away by the Phantom Ruby, very clearly leads into his appearance in Sonic Forces. Then at the end of Sonic Forces, Sonic is returned to his own time, but I'm unsure as to what officially happens next. Both Sonic Mania Adventures and Sonic Mania Plus: Encore Mode begin with Sonic warping back into Angel Island zone before branching off in separate directions. Do you know if either of these is considered the canon conclusion to Sonic Mania? Arryn what genre you haven’t done yet in your professional [career] that you wanted to do? Andrew D. If Archie’s Mega Man were ever to return, how would you approach the Genesis Nexus that was created at the end of Worlds Unite, since it was tied into the now defunct Archie Sonic (wow, it feels so sad saying that)? How would Mr. X be handled without the crossover being a part of his background? And if IDW decided to pick up the license, would it be forced to be rebooted? Are the Archie exclusive Mega Man characters owned exclusively by Capcom? And if IDW were allowed to pick up the Archie Mega Man comic where it left off, would we then be allowed to see the Genesis Nexus storyline finished, despite it now being a different Sonic, or perhaps just having the license to each franchise would be enough to have Sonic simply mentioned by Mega Man without them actually meeting again? Basically, I’m really interested in knowing what can and can’t be done in these situations, that is, either Archie continuing the comic or IDW getting the license and either rebooting it or continuing it. STANDARD Q&A Almiron R. my question for you, is to know is you want to make a new multiverse for IDW Sonic in the future, like what scenarios you have in mind? James M. what were Scourge the Hedgehog’s evil plans before the Super Genesis Wave happened? Liam B. I have a question about Mobius: 30-Years-Later. I love the Tails and Mina coupling, but why was that chosen? Is there any backstory for it as to how it happened or its backstory? If not, why was it chosen, from a writers standpoint?

(I know! Shocking, isn't it?) There have been persistent rumours for a few years now that Rocksteady has been working on a new Batman: Arkham game, but so far we haven't heard anything official. Would you like to see them do a new Arkham game, or prefer to see something else from them instead? Another superhero, perhaps? In either case, what would you like to see in such a game? Connall T In the Mega Man comics, there was this anti-robot terrorist group which was around during both the classic area and the X series. If the series continued, does that mean we would have seen other human antagonists like Theo and Simone? Plus, would Dr. Weil from the Zero series had been a part of it? Seems like the kind of guy who would have wanted to one up the Reploids. Arryn I put one here, I use to talk to George RR Martin about development character asking him character development, he said the best way to develop a character by taking away what means most to them. To the main point to Flynn would ever break sonic leg or legs in a way for him to rediscover himself. STANDARD Q&A DoubleAMR_9 Just a question for you about Whisper the Wolf. Does she have a backstory in the works regarding her past experience with Eggman and her disdain of Shadow, or is that being left up to fan interpretation? Clay A. Will we see any (mainline, not miniseries or one-offs) issues in IDW Sonic series that focus on only Sonic (or other characters not Sonic, to spice it up)? It's always Sonic with one or more people, and I feel the formula is starting to run a little dry. James M. Ian, before the end of Archie Sonic, what were your long-term plans for Honey the Cat? Brodie M. How would you feel if the Archie and IDW characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog comics were introduced into the games? IMagoo04 How to I become sonic freedom fighters

The latest Bumblekast episode got me hyped for Bumblekwest, and so I went back to season three of the Bumblekast to listen to when you talked about some of the other roleplaying games you'd played and the characters you'd had I was wondering what some of your most memorable (and hilarious) moments were from those games? Did you ever come up with an utterly ridiculous plan that had no chance of working, and yet it worked because you rolled really high? Did you ever roll a natural one and fail in a most amusing fashion? STANDARD Q&A Kudamon2006 How big is Tangle the Lemur? Asyra04 [As a follow-up regarding Shadow not working for GUN:] Okay I'm sorry. Does that mean they're essentially contractors? Or are they just like the Freedom Fighters where they just sort of butt into everything and G.U.N just sort of shrugs and goes, "OH WELL, GET THEM BRIEFED I GUESS!?" Brodie M Would you like to have a crossover between Sonic and the Marvel Universe(such as the Avengers, Spider-Man, the X-Men and Fantastic Four)? SwissChaosRoll Hi, I'm currently trying to make a hero team, with inspiration being from the Sonic series. Do you have any advice? William C If I remember right, you once said you had ideas or aspirations for a Donkey Kong comic, yeah? I was wondering, purely hypothetically, would such a comic require Donkey Kong (and Diddy and Dixie and whoever) to talk? Or could they stay silent?

A lot of popular video game characters have well known idle animations, where they'll start doing stuff if you put down the controller and not move them for awhile. Two of the best known are Sonic's impatient foot tapping, and Mario falling asleep and dreaming of spaghetti and ravioli. What are some of your favourite idle animations? I personally loved Conker, from Conker's Bad Fur Day. Leave him alone long enough, and he'd pull out a Game Boy, a yo-yo, a hacky sack, or just yell at you to, "Stop doing that, you'll go blind!" STANDARD Q&A JC J If the Archie sonic comic wasn’t cancelled how many issues would it have gone for and how would it have ended and would it include events mentioned in the Mobius 25 storyline? TheSketchyMan Ian, have you ever considered making a sort of "Lost Hedgehog Tales" for the Mega Man Archie Comics series? Is something keeping you from making it? Like hope of a succesor? Brad Headly What is going on with cream the rabbit and cheese? They vanished since and including sonic forces, and the comic doesn't seem to address this. Not even Blaze seems concerned by creams absence after the events of the war she missed. They then appeared on the number 9 cover only to be completely missing from the book and any one after. I am confused, and concerned, have they been "mandated" again? Why is cream always being given the short end of the stick? XericStudios Which member of the Coconut Crew was it that Null absorbed in the unreleased Archie Sonic issue that focused on Bunnie? Was it Gardon? And is their any possibility of him and Cortez showing up in IDW seeing as they were never actually used in Archie. Bebble-Blast I recently noticed that Tangle’s age has been confirmed as 15. Do the others have ages yet? (Whisper, Rough, Tumble, Dr. Starline?)

Let's take a trip back in time to 2005, to the ending of the Shadow the Hedgehog game. Shadow stands in grumpy triumph as Black Arms chunks reign down on the planet, and declares that he's putting the past behind him as he says, "Goodbye forever, Shadow the Hedgehog." To reinforce that he was putting his past behind him, we got that sweet Crush 40 song over the closing credits: "Never Turn Back." ..then a year later Sonic '06 came out, and we found out that Shadow was now working for GUN. I can see why Shadow would want to join GUN, as he probably thought that he could change them from within and prevent another Maria incident from ever happening. But after the ending of Shadow's game practically walloped us over the head with the message that Shadow was done with the past, I was pretty surprised that Shadow went in that direction when he decided on a career. Were you surprised as well, and whose idea do you think it was for Shadow to become a GUN agent? Did Rouge suggest it, and drag an unsuspecting Shadow to an interview? Did the President demand it of the GUN Commander? Did the GUN Commander decide of his own volition to extend Shadow an olive branch? Or did Shadow just march into the commander's office and say, "Alright buddy boy, this is how things are going to happen from now on."? IanWaffles There are two character moments from the Archie Sonic comics that I wanted further clarification on. The first is during House of Cards. Are we meant to assume that Tails’ anger over Fiona was the only problem he had with Sonic that was reasonable? Or were his other problems with Sonic, like him treating Tails poorly on occasion or taking him for granted, also to be taken seriously? If so, was Sonics apology about “hurting Tails” and “being a jerk” meant to imply those issues as well? Second, when Sonics dad Jules told Scourge “do you want that on your head as well?” In regards to Scourge destroying him, Scourge drops his bravado and even cries. Is Scourges reaction to imply that he would actually feel a little bad about destroying Sonics dad? Possibly because of the pain the loss of his own dad caused him? Or was there another implication from his reaction? Mike B So on Bumblekast 60 (I know so long ago), you mentioned that the air charms replaced your original idea of using the bubble/aqua shields in Waves of Change. My question then is, if given the chance, How would you have fleshed out the bubble shield? Would you have made it more or less the same as the air charms? Or would have gone in a different direction, since it didn't really work out for Waves of Change? STANDARD Q&A Daniel S. Anonymous Is it true that "Sonic can't cry" was an official restriction on Sonic comics? Squinji Hey Ian I got a weird question, I noticed that when blaze shows up in volume 3 (I think) of the new sonic comic tangle is really flustered and blushes, does she have a crush on blaze or something? Or is she just like really enthusiastic about cat girls? Jack will you explore the interactions between Tangle and Blaze outside of Tangle's "admiration" for Blaze?
