Why do we overlook insects so often? In this show we decided to focus on insects for a change. Our guest Alex Hill is doing his PhD research on human insect relationships. We discuss why people including animal advocates and vegans do not consider insects much at all. We have a short quiz on insects, we talk about the threat of insect extinction and look into the details about different species of insects. Alex Hill works with a range of sporting organisations. He sometimes stuns them into silence too.On one such occasion, Hill, the Co-Founder and Director of the Centre for High Performance, compelled senior leaders at the Premier League to confront its own demise.“I said: ‘at some point people will not want to work for you'. Now that feels impossible at the moment,” Hill tells the Leaders Performance Podcast. How did that observation go down?“It was quite a quiet room,” Hill says. “At the moment, they're lucky they've got the pick of the best talent, the best physios, the best scientists – but that might not be there forever.”Hill spent 13 years studying organisations that have out-performed their peers for over 100 years, including the All Blacks, Eton College and the Royal Shakespeare Company. The result is his book Centennials: The 12 Habits of Great, Enduring Organisations.“If you want society to support you long term, your impact has to be much broader than just creating role models,” he continues. “Why don't you take the learning from being at the cutting edge of mental and physical performance and share that?”Hill believes that the British national governing bodies competing at the Olympic and Paralympic Games could feed those lessons back into the community in the form of a “spin-offs division” similar to that of NASA (another centennial).“This spin-offs division [could be] designed to take that learning and feed it into all of society so that the whole of our country develops.”It is just one idea Hill shares during the course of a conversation full of advice for sporting organisations. He spoke of the New Zealand All Blacks and their readiness to embrace failure [40:20]; finding smarter ways to attract money and talent [10:45]; and why a diverse talent pool can make an organisation more relevant to a broader swathe of society [17:15].Henry Breckenridge X | LinkedInJohn Portch X | LinkedInListen above and subscribe today on iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher and Overcast, or your chosen podcast platform.

Today's podcast is all about the insurance of political risk and violence and we are going to come at this subject from all angles. This episode is intended to be an all-round masterclass for anyone with an interest in these fascinating and fast-growing specialist lines of business. Is the world a riskier place and are risks going to remain insurable? And where is most of the new demand of the coming decades going to be coming from? All is examined in detail. Much has been made of the exceptional number of elections taking place in global democracies in 2024 as another possible source of political complications and conflict. Africa has also been highlighted as a potentially huge new source of demand, driven by the global transition to net zero carbon emissions and this goal's need for the rare earth metals that are to be found in abundance in many of its Southern and Eastern States. But it's no secret that many of Africa's most mineral-rich nations with the largest development potential are also places where political stability can be in short supply. For this reason, I talk to Lara Wolfe, Senior Sub-Saharan Africa Risk Analyst at risk consultancy BMI, which is part of the Fitch Group. (Pictured Top) This market sounds like the ideal territory for brave underwriters to be operating in and this is where the expertise of Roddy Barnett (Pictured bottom), Head of Political Risks and Trade Credit at Beazley is invaluable. Finally, with the help of Beazley's Head of Political Risk and Violence Claims, Alex Hill, (pictured middle) we'll learn how the political risk product actually works on the. I am very pleased with how this first thematic documentary-style podcast has turned out – I do hope you enjoy it and find it useful. NOTES: Here's the link to the Navigating political risk in an era of heightened global tensions report: https://www.beazley.com/en-US/news-and-events/geopolitical-risk-snapshot-2024 There's a great summary, but I highly recommend downloading and reading it in its entirety.

In this month's new podcast episode, Charlie interviews emerging playwright, Alex Hill, who shares his experiences moving his play "Bum Flare Play" from the Edinburgh Fringe to the Southwick Playhouse. Coming to the end of his time at drama school, Alex slowly realised that he need more than that to become a success in the industry. The challenges of a global pandemic and the excitement of European football was an interesting time for our society, where people were acting in rather bizarre ways, and it was a news story of just one of these strange incidents that stuck with Alex, and then became the premise of his play. You just never know when inspiration is going to hit!Alex and Charlie discuss the discipline and resilience required to write as well as the influence of personal rituals and the British weather on productivity. In particular, he emphasises the importance of finding your own creative rhythm for success in the arts. The interview delves into the realities of the festival circuit, with Alex providing insight into the financial and emotional challenges of the Edinburgh Fringe. He highlights the transformative power of collaboration in theater, as demonstrated by his partnership with show director Sean. This episode shares valuable insight from Alex and is a lovely, fun conversation between the two friends. Alex Hill had a near-death experience at the age of 27, which was a culmination of stress and confusion from working in a fast-paced environment and not listening to his inner voice. His heart stopped for two minutes while working out with his personal trainer in the Equinox Gym in Manhattan. He saw his spirit leave his body and had to choose between ascending to the heavenly realms or getting back into his body and changing his way of life. This experience awakened him to spirituality firsthand, which he had never experienced before even after experimenting with substances at parties. --- TIMESTAMPS: Near-Death Experience: "My spirit came out of my body and I was looking down at a dead corpse." — Alex Hill [00:00:37 → 00:02:33] Near Death Experiences: "White light at the end of the tunnel is what's described in most near death experiences, and then either Buddha or Jesus, depending if the person is in a Christian country or Asian country. Right. So there's these commonalities that you'll find in the near death experience, and I definitely experienced similar." — Alex Hill [00:02:43 → 00:04:19] Overcoming Distrust of Authority: "It's this distrust of authority, and it could be good and it can be bad. And I've had to do a lot of work around this of understanding how to respect police after getting beat up by police, understanding how to really honor veterans and to be in a place of just reverence and being human, right?" — Alex Hill [00:06:28 → 00:08:33] Authority vs Control: "I'm not sure if I fully accept authority because there's a fine line between authority and control, power over or power with. Right. And a lot of the authority and a lot of the control that's happening in governments and on this planet right now is crossing that line." — Alex Hill [00:09:26 → 00:10:25] Healing through Plant Medicine: "For veterans with PTSD or anybody that has a lot of trauma or some really deep stuff that they want to work through, these plants and these mushrooms are truly our allies, and they can really assist us if they're being held in a safe space and a really safe container." — Alex Hill [00:11:52 → 00:14:35] The Great Awakening: "Our healing is our responsibility, right? And even if we have PTSD and we went to war, we got one life to live in this lifetime, right? So we got one life to live. And once you have access to the medicines that are available and you have the opportunity to heal, why wouldn't you do it?" — Alex Hill [00:16:25 → 00:19:23] Following your intuition: "I basically set sail to the wind and started to really live from my heart and my spirit and my intuition." — Alex Hill [00:20:41 → 00:24:42] Exploring Unconventional Career Paths: "At 21 years old, I was like, I really don't know. And it almost just felt like this pressure of like, okay, if I pick a career in communications or business or economics, I have to be an economist, or I have to be like so obviously that's not true." — Alex Hill [00:25:09 → 00:27:55] Cultivating Gratitude: "The gratitude that we can have for life is infinite and never ends. And a good day to me is when I wake up grateful, and then I experience more gratitude, and my gratitude deepens for different aspects of my life as things go on." — Alex Hill [00:28:18 → 00:31:48] "The Importance of Physical Fitness for Men: 'If I'm not strong in my body, there's not much I can do.'" — Alex Hill [00:32:30 → 00:33:52] --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/coffeewithklingman/message
No, not the Michelangelo biography by Irving Stone, but the highs and lows of the maddening, marvellous process of writing a business book. In this best bits episode I pick out the pearls from the last few conversations, and this time the common theme is the pain and pleasure of writing a book, the unrelenting difficulty of it, and the extraordinary joy and meaning it provides. Often all in the same moment. Whether you're agonising over your manuscript or feeling ecstatic about the progress you're making you'll relate to all of this, and if you're lacking motivation, you'll find it here in spades. With insights from: Steven Adjei on the nature of pain; Richard Charkin on the visceral vulnerability of becoming an author; Melissa Romo on the challenges of making the complex simple; Catherine Erdly on detail wrangling; Susan Doering on the relentless work of marketing; Eloise Skinner on dealing with the soul suck of social media; Adam Bryant on the all-consumingness of writing a book; and Alex Hill on why we do it at all. Imagine what Michelangelo could have achieved if he'd listened to this...
'What you leave behind is what you write... no one talks about the article that changed their life, and they're not read for decades after they've been written. [Books are] foundational.' Working at the intersection of research and application, Professor Alex Hill has learned that it's not enough to have the 'Ta Dah' moment - you then need to have a good answer to the 'So What?' question. In this thoughtful conversation we talk about the principles of organizations that endure, the importance of naming ideas (and how to help people NOT misinterpret them), and the life-changing significance of finding out what it is you want to leave behind.
