For Episode 73, we head down under—and no, we're not playing “Land Down Under” on repeat, but we are bringing you a story as catchy as that classic tune. We're off to Barossa, Australia's legendary wine region, where old vines, bold Shiraz, and deep community roots come together in a glass. Our guest, James Lindner from Langmeil Winery, isn't just making wine—he's preserving living history. From relocating 140-year-old vines (yes, literally moving them) to championing the Barossa Old Vine Charter, James shares stories that prove wine is more than a drink; it's memory, place, and identity bottled up. We talk soil, sustainability, storytelling, and what it means to balance tradition with modern winemaking. And trust us: once you hear James, you'll want to grab a bottle of Barossa Shiraz and toast to the vines that just keep giving. Cheers to the land of plenty—and to never drinking another boring wine again. We've had plenty of feedback and questions coming in for Nick and Mark, so today a feedback pod. On the show we discuss:Broomstick putters following a question from James;Gibbo has some comments on the potential PGA/LIV merger and asks for thoughts; We spoke to David from Brisbane last week who went to the Barossa on a golf trip with a bunch of mates, how did it go, and did the advice help? We get an update;Ashley has a ripping question about the 'grand slam of club golf';John has a red-hot crack at Mark and he doesn't miss him! Does Mark take it on board or push back?Nick was pleased to see the Karl Vilips pairing a couple of weekends ago and wrote in. We discuss pairings, Mark tells us about the best pairing he ever got, on nearly getting paired with Tiger twice, and on Tiger nearly decapitating him!And after the turn, Wolfpack member Daniel has sent us in a video of his, and his daughters, swings, and asked for some feedback from Nick and Mark on what they see, and any improvements that they could each suggest. If you want us to review your swing, or putting, or anything else - send us a video here or on socials and Nick and Mark will have a look at it on the pod.We do the show from Titleist and FootJoy HQ, thanks to our great partners:Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best. Viticulturalist of the Year for Barossa Valley is Kym Kalleske, from a 7th Gen wine industry family he and his brothers share up the duties and make some great wines. @thewineshowaustralia @kalleske
A huge pod today, we start with Karl Vilips' fantastic win in Puerto Rico - amazing. Nick and Mark chat about his path to this point, from an Australian prodigy at 6-years old to PGA winner, how he did it and why he moved to the US so young. Nick chats about what impressed him about Karl's performance, and Mark raises his swing and suggests it may be the new modern swing. Nick would prefer to see Karl waggling, but at the same time he's doing pretty well without it!We discuss Jason Day's suble change in his putting. Nick raises some of the changes at Bay Hill and talks about playing that course.Mark raises 'fast greens' and says that whilst many golfers like to say they play them well, they are not ideal generally. We talk about ideal green speeds. The Australian Open dates, for all tournaments, are yet to be announced. Mark asks are Golf Australia serious about the Open or not? And he invites James Sutherland onto the pod to explain where it's at.Mark has heard that the discussions between the PIF and the PGA in Washington have broken down.Nick's Top 5 is on well known players who wore gloves to putt, in order of worst to best. It won't surprise you to know that it is in fact a Top 6. Surely by now this is an ACCC issue. Nick also tells a great story about the Golden Bear at a conference - very funny.Feedback today - including a call from David in Brisbane who is heading off next week to the Barossa for a boys drinking , ahem, golf trip and wants some advice on how to maintain energy and momentum under duress (ie: late nights, wines and beers). Also in feedback a couple of whacks for Mark. Always fun.PING global results - we're yet to resolve the trumpet situation. Watch this space. And Marks masterclass is on how 'locking your shirt' under your armpit can help your putting. Our intern Javier was in charge of audio, might explain why we fired him.We do the show from Titleist and FootJoy HQ, thanks to our great partners:Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf; The watchMynumbers app, play smarter and use your data.
Simon Nash and Dean have a great chat about V25 and how good the fruit is looking at this stage of the vintage despite the challenges early in the season. This show features an overview of an essential place in the wine world: South Australia. There is much to learn here but I try to break it down into what is important to know. The show is somewhat heavy on history, since that is an essential part of why South Australia is important today. South Australia is an Australian state located in the central south of the continent that refers to itself as Australia's “Wine State”, and rightfully so: it produces 50% of all bottled wine and about 80% of the country's premium wine. Most large wine companies (8 of the 13 continuously operating wine companies in Australia are here), many small wineries and almost all the official wine trade organizations, including Wine Australia, the government body responsible for regulating and promoting Australian wine, and the Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI), which plays a crucial role in wine research, are based in South Australia. South Australia consists of 18 regions, and although I address most of them, I also point out that there are a handful that are essential to truly knowing about South Australia: Barossa, Eden Valley, Clare Valley, Adelaide Hills, Coonawarra, and McLaren Vale. Map: Wine Australia This is a bit of a whirlwind show, but hopefully it gives you a flavor for this famed, and essential corner of the wine world. My hope is that heard one or two things I said that you may not have known and that you seek out those wines. Australia is under appreciated in the US, especially, and when you get a good one, it is usually unbelievably good! Full show notes and all back episodes are on Patreon. BC Food and Wine goes Down Under this week with the help of two celebrated Australian Women who have been global ambassadors for Australian Wine and powerful role models for women working in wine for decades. Hodder was also recently inducted into the prestigious James Halliday Hall of Fame, cementing her status as a wine industry icon and a true legend of Coonawarra wine. Jane Ferrari was named the South Australia Legend of the Vine recognizing her outstanding contribution to the industry. Her career spans many years and is punctuated by her great ability and passion for communicating and storytelling about wine. Ferrari is a past WCA Wine Communicator of the Year (2012) winner and was inducted as a Baron of the Barossa in 2013, with a career in winemaking and communication, including 25 years at Yalumba Wines, as well as time spent at Wolf Blass Wines and Rockford Wines.
Dichotomy is a Washington State vineyard and winery born from winemakers Jarred Jenner and Rosie Signer after they fell in love on the coast of South Australia. Rosie grew up in Spokane Washington and studied Viticulture and Enology at WSU before heading to Australia, where she fell in love with the terroir and Barossa born and bred winemaker, Jarred Jenner. In 2021 Jarred and Rosie banded together in 2021 and started the Dichotomy brand in Australia crafting small batch wines from beloved vineyards in McLaren Vale, Barossa, and the Adelaide Hills. In 2022, amidst the challenges of Covid-19, they took a bold leap of faith by purchasing a dormant winery and vineyard in Yakima Valley without ever seeing it in person. With just six suitcases, their young children, and their beloved dog Yeti in tow, they embarked on this new adventure. Despite their unfamiliarity with the area, the promise of Yakima Valley's renowned wines and the allure of the vineyard's mature 30-40-year-old vines compelled them to dive in.

BOB'S BEST BUYS Taylors Jaraman 2022 Shiraz $26 Why I chose it: I needed a big rich Aussie red to match my braised lamb shanks. Taylors is my “go to” wine producer when I'm looking for a classic Barossa-style red (this is made from a blend of Clare Valley and McLaren Vale grapes). What does it taste like? An intense wine with rich, ripe berry-fruit, vanilla, black pepper and chocolate/mocha flavours. Why it's a bargain: It delivers more bang for the buck than just about any other red wine I can think of. I don't know how they can make a wine of this quality at such a modest price. Where can you buy it? The Good Wine Co., Auckland $25.99 Whiskeyonline, Auckland $25.99 Winesale.co.nz, Lower Hutt $25.99 Food match? Braised lamb shanks or similar hearty roast lamb dishes Will it keep? It is delicious now but should become even mellower and more complex in a few years.
