Fresh off a 56 point drubbing in Barossa, Sparrow and Needles are back!! Some say they're fickle fancasters — others just busy professionals...Regardless, they love to spend time with Nordic Viking Warriors and Playful Killer Whales discussing all things Orange Army, so it's a PREMIUM full house episode this week: Sparrow, Needles, Ragnar Lothbrok and Orca. Generally talking over each other, sometimes making coherent points. Always unfiltered.So...., we got some troops back and all of a sudden we're brilliant at football and a delight to watch. Funny that. Turns out Stormy is quite good, as is Cadman. In fact, if there was a drug that administered the same dopamine hit as watching Callaghan break out of the centre square and land a perfectly weighted kick into the outstretched mittens of Cadman, we'd all be addicts. Better than Meth.Speaking of which, GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY IS A FARCE.... according to avid fan Brett, who writes in to share his thoughts on changing our name. We all generally disagree, but love the input nonetheless — keep it coming Brett and Scotty. On to the Massive Game this week — the Battle Of The Bridge (always was, always will be), LFG!!! Tough one. Crowd will have specks of orange in the sea of red, just how we like it at the SCG. Hopefully we see the return to form of TFG (who showed glimpes last week) for another Brett Kirk medal. (Thank F*K Luke Parker is lone gone...)Enjoy the Friday Night Lights at the SCG, good luck if you're there looking for love, and remember: Never Surrender.----To get in contact, drop an email, comment on Spotify or message on X.We love reviews or ratings.Email: thesquinterspodcast@gmail.comYouTube: NeverSurrenderByTheSquintersX: The SquintersInstagram: gws_squintersFB: thesquintersTikTok: the.squinters

When 80,000 people descend on an event, somebody has made it look effortless. Wayne Taylor has spent three decades being that somebody, from the Sydney 2000 Olympics to Wimbledon, Formula One on three continents, and right here in Adelaide at the Clipsal 500. His company, First Facilities Group, now brings that same discipline to commercial and residential properties (and events) across Adelaide. There is no SA Drink of the Week this episode, but Wayne does weigh in on the relative merits of beer events versus wine events versus spirit events, and the answer is exactly what you would expect from a man who has cleaned up after all three. The Musical Pilgrimage features Steve Davis and the Virtualosos performing “Cellar Door Shuffle,” a celebration of the great South Australian wine country ritual, which also gets a preview mention for the upcoming History Hit Parade show at the Mercury Cinema. Running Sheet: Gather Round To Learn About Major Events 00:00:00 Intro Introduction 00:00:00 SA Drink Of The Week There is no SA Drink Of The Week this week. 00:02:17 Wayne Taylor, First Facilities Group Right now, as Gather Round unfolds across South Australia, tens of thousands of people are doing what they always do at a footy match: finding a seat, grabbing a pie, visiting the loo, and not once thinking about any of it. That invisibility is because someone’s doing their job brilliantly. Wayne Taylor has spent the better part of three decades making sure that when 80,000 people descend on an event, the wheels don’t fall off. He’s done it at the Sydney Olympics. At Wimbledon. At Formula One races on three continents. At Clipsal 500 when 200 staff, 15 supervisors and a $300,000 budget had to deliver a spotless result across four days. And he’s done it right here in Adelaide, quietly, at events you almost certainly attended. He now runs First Facilities Group, bringing that same discipline to commercial and residential properties across Adelaide. Wayne Taylor has a habit most of us would find exhausting. Every time he walks into a building, he is quietly checking the mirrors, the bins, the general state of things. It is not fussiness. It is decades of conditioning that started when his parents cleaned Memorial Drive as a boy from Broken Hill, and he mostly just got in the way by raiding the office stationery drawers. That origin story matters because the values Wayne brings to First Facilities Group now, respect, honesty, and an obsessive eye for what others walk past, were baked in early. As he puts it, “If you can’t get your housekeeping correct, how can you then operate your business?” It is a lens that applies equally to a gleaming corporate lobby and to the pit lane at Albert Park. The stories from his career read like an event passport. At the Sydney Olympics he managed 1,100 staff, set an 80% minimum recycling target, and navigated vehicle bomb checks just to get to work each morning. At Wimbledon, he learned that a single cigarette butt on the ground was enough to earn a conversation with the CEO, and that some corporate boxes were quietly serving spirits in coffee cups because you cannot legally drink alcohol watching football in England. At Formula One, a certain unnamed driver, “Mansell,” parked his car next to the waste compactor despite clear signage, and paid for it when a bin tipped onto the vehicle. Wayne watched from the level above and, eventually, laughed. The Clipsal 500 holds a particular place in his story. He worked it for twelve years and is clear-eyed about what it meant to Adelaide after the Grand Prix left in 1995: “The place went dead.” The Clipsal helped rebuild that. His team delivered the best margin in the company that year not through corner-cutting but through relentless post-event debriefs, 4am starts, and crews walking the entire circuit in a line with headlamps, because the lighting was never quite good enough. One of the sharper insights in this conversation is about the people who do this work. Wayne keeps what he calls a little Bible, a list of standout workers from each event. The good ones get taken to lunch, thanked properly, and connected to the next opportunity, whether that is the Grand Prix in Melbourne or something interstate. It is empathetic at a human level, and it also happens to be smart: one well-led supervisor with 20 people will outperform a rabble of 50. His principles for First Facilities Group are unchanged: respect, honesty, punctuality, and a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work. He once disciplined his own teenage son for repeated lateness in front of the whole crew, because anything less would have been unfair to everyone else. That is the standard he holds himself to and expects from others. 01:08:34 Musical Pilgrimage In the Musical Pilgrimage, we feature Steve Davis & The Virtualosos‘ new song, Cellar Door Shuffle. This song is a love letter to the ritual of winery visits across South Australia, from the Hills to Barossa, McLaren Vale to the Clare. Wayne is still in the room for this one, and Steve uses it to draw a neat contrast from the week’s main themes: beer events are loud, spirit events are rough, wine events are, as Wayne says, “a little more sophisticated.” The song will also feature in the History Hit Parade show with Keith Conlon at the Mercury Cinema. It’s on Monday, May 11, 11am, and Sunday, May 17, at 4pm and it will simply be an enjoyable show of historical anecdotes, fun, and music.Support the show: https://theadelaideshow.com.au/listen-or-download-the-podcast/adelaide-in-crowd/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, Janina takes us deep into one of the most dramatic stories in wine history - the arrival of phylloxera in 19th century Europe - and explores how that crisis continues to shape the wines we drink today. She is joined by Jamie Goode -  wine writer, judge, lecturer and author with a PhD in plant biology - to unpack the science behind grafting, the myth and magic of old vines, forgotten grape varieties, and whether ungrafted vines truly produce better wines. From Japan's wax paper “hats” protecting grape bunches, to Barossa's centenarian vineyards, to modern disease-resistant varieties like Voltis and Floréal, this episode blends history, science and future-facing viticulture in one fascinating conversation. If you've ever wondered whether ungrafted vines are superior, what actually happens during grafting, or how climate change might reshape grape varieties - this is your episode. 02:59 – The most surprising wine region Jamie has visited so far is Japan's with it's unique vineyard practices. 04:45 – Koshu explained - is it Japan's most exciting grape variety, or are international grapes performing better? 06:38 – Behind the scenes of filming The Science of Wine (available to watch on WinemastersTV or Prime Video) - vineyards, Mosel landscapes and the unexpected challenges of production. 09:54 – Composing the soundtrack on the spot - Jamie's spontaneous vineyard music recordings. 10:41 – Ungrafted vines: are they genuinely better, or is the answer more nuanced? 15:24 – The phylloxera story step by step - how one 19th-century plant import reshaped global wine. 20:53 – Forgotten varieties and whether they could make a comeback in the face of climate change. 22:46 – Loïc Pasquet (Liber Pater) and the revival of pre-phylloxera Bordeaux varieties. 29:04 – Francs de Pied movement - preserving ungrafted vineyards and the debate around their relevance. 31:21 – EU regulations and why planting ungrafted vines is often restricted. 31:55 – Rootstock resistance failures in California and Australia - are we facing new phylloxera risks? 34:33 – Soil microbiome experiments - could beneficial microorganisms protect ungrafted vines? 36:20 – How do you graft a vine? Omega grafts, English grafts and T-bud grafting explained. 40:49 – Inside a vine nursery - what really happens behind the scenes. 42:23 – Old vines vs young vines - do older vines truly produce better wines? 46:05 – Why old vines often yield less fruit - aging, pruning and vine physiology. 47:25 – Recommended wines from ungrafted and old vines - Barossa, Chile, Argentina and beyond. 49:09 – At-home wine experiments - blending your own Bordeaux-style wine and even propagating vine cuttings. 51:28 – What's next for Jamie - new book releases and upcoming projects. 52:37 – Links to Jamie's books and further reading. 53:21 – Next week: Deep Dive Flashcards - The Rhône Valley. Have you tasted wines from ungrafted vines - a true pied franc? Did they feel purer, more transparent… or is that simply romance in the glass?

Tonight we are tasting an Australian white wine. While not one of the major whites, Semillon is a fairly popular white wine produced in Australia. For the second straight week, our wine comes from the Barossa wine region. The Barossa wine region has two subregions or (GI's – Geographical Indications).Barossa ValleyEden ValleyBarossa Valley produces big red wines and bold whites. It is a warmer weather area.Eden Valley is located in a chain of hills called the Mount Lofty Ranges. The higher elevation makes Eden a distinctly cooler climate leading to wines with a tart and intense acidity. It is also where most white wine grapes are grown in Barossa. Two things to learn from tonight's show. Higher acidity in wine helps the wine age well. However, high-acid wines may need to be aged longer to mellow out the acid.Despite the two areas being closely located. They produce distinct wines.Tonight, we are tasting:2025 Torbreck Woodcutter's Semillon, Barossa Valley. The bottle says the wine is made from grapes from old vines. The winery was #24 on “The Real Review” best wineries of Australia. Aged in stainless steel (60%) as well as seasoned French barriques (40%) for three months. It typically shows complex notes of smoked almonds and honeysuckle as well as buttery textures from the natural malolactic fermentation. Grapes are hand-picked over several days. It is unfined and unfiltered. Fresh and bright citrus and green-apple notes, and a subtle waxy richness on the finish. Enjoy now or cellar for 10 to 15 years.Other flavors mentioned. Brioche, French pastry, lime, grapefruit, lemon, aromatic perfume.Pairs with seafood, light white fish dishes, or Mexican or Asian salads. We loved the wine. I scored it a 4 and Denise a 5. I will definitely purchase more.

https://www.patriciagordonstevens.com/ Patricia Gordon Stevens is a writer from Memphis Tennessee now living in Kapunda, South Australia with her British husband. She spends her time putting pen to paper in the beautiful, peaceful landscape between the Barossa and Clare Valleys. Her debut fictional novel, ‘Madness in Memphis', exposes the reality of living with domestic violence and the challenges many women face when they attempt to escape. As a mature student, Patricia studied Psychological Science and Sociology at the University of South Australia, before graduating from Edith Cowan University with a Master's in Counselling in 2024. She now runs her own business, Maxwell House Counselling, where she specialises in working with clients experiencing anxiety, loneliness, grief, bereavement and trauma. She is a certified death doula and volunteers at Kapunda aged care homes. She believes that nobody should be alone on their last journey. In her professional life, she was a marketing and corporate events manager for Barossa based companies, writing and recording radio commercials for Chateau Tanunda and The Beer Girls. Patricia and her husband also owned The Wheatsheaf Pub in Allendale North, SA, where she worked primarily in public relations and marketing, and even sometimes donned a chef's hat! She treasures living in their 1860s cottage with her husband and any furry, four-legged being that drops by and decides to make the house their home. This contemporary work surrounding Morgan and children, Ollie and Opal, her mother Kat, dearest friend, Lee, outstanding colleague, Antonio, and new attorney, Ash, delivers a lasting impression while transporting the reader into a personal horror story and Morgan's brutal struggle to survive. Morgan's experience of twists and turns combined with a deep emotional effect is laced with an excitement and the intention of dragging the reader to the edge of their seat beyond the final hopeful moments. Questioning her core values and beliefs sits at the centre of this story - how did she end up in this predicament? Self-examination is key throughout her escape and 'Madness in Memphis' becomes a compelling story surrounding a woman fleeing domestic violence while offering a unique take on the existing genre to create a moral, uplifting perspective woven between the emotional and strikingly brutal tale.

For Episode 73, we head down under—and no, we're not playing “Land Down Under” on repeat, but we are bringing you a story as catchy as that classic tune. We're off to Barossa, Australia's legendary wine region, where old vines, bold Shiraz, and deep community roots come together in a glass. Our guest, James Lindner from Langmeil Winery, isn't just making wine—he's preserving living history. From relocating 140-year-old vines (yes, literally moving them) to championing the Barossa Old Vine Charter, James shares stories that prove wine is more than a drink; it's memory, place, and identity bottled up. We talk soil, sustainability, storytelling, and what it means to balance tradition with modern winemaking. And trust us: once you hear James, you'll want to grab a bottle of Barossa Shiraz and toast to the vines that just keep giving. Cheers to the land of plenty—and to never drinking another boring wine again. Ep 550: South Australia - An Overview of Australia's “Wine State"

Wine for Normal People

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 29, 2025 46:59

This show features an overview of an essential place in the wine world: South Australia. There is much to learn here but I try to break it down into what is important to know. The show is somewhat heavy on history, since that is an essential part of why South Australia is important today.    South Australia is an Australian state located in the central south of the continent that refers to itself as Australia's “Wine State”, and rightfully so: it produces 50% of all bottled wine and about 80% of the country's premium wine. Most large wine companies (8 of the 13 continuously operating wine companies in Australia are here), many small wineries and almost all the official wine trade organizations, including Wine Australia, the government body responsible for regulating and promoting Australian wine, and the Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI), which plays a crucial role in wine research, are based in South Australia.   South Australia consists of 18 regions, and although I address most of them, I also point out that there are a handful that are essential to truly knowing about South Australia: Barossa, Eden Valley, Clare Valley, Adelaide Hills, Coonawarra, and McLaren Vale.   Map: Wine Australia   This is a bit of a whirlwind show, but hopefully it gives you a flavor for this famed, and essential corner of the wine world. My hope is that heard one or two things I said that you may not have known and that you seek out those wines. Australia is under appreciated in the US, especially, and when you get a good one, it is usually unbelievably good!     Full show notes and all back episodes are on Patreon. Become a member today! www.patreon.com/winefornormalpeople _______________________________________________________________   Check out my exclusive sponsor, Wine Access.  They have an amazing selection -- once you get hooked on their wines, they will be your go-to!
