Gabe Kuhn and Jonah Jordan open up hour one with Top and Not Top, Tiger transfers, and the MLB All-Star Game move. Later they are joined by Bruce Marshall to talk about Roy Williams and the Final Four.
In this episode of Off the Boards, host and lead writer Christian Fowler and GT247 veteran Jonah Jordan sit down to discuss three-star wide receiver Roc Taylor and his commitment to Memphis. Taylor signed with Memphis on National Signing Day after Tennessee pulled his offer on Tuesday, and he is the highest rated player in the Tigers' 2021 class. With the addition of Taylor, Memphis' 2021 class is up to No. 45 overall in the 247Sports Team Rankings. Taylor is currently ranked as the No. 440 overall player in the class and the No. 15 overall player from the state of Alabama. The three-star prospect was named first-team all-state in Alabama's Class 6A after racking up over 1,000 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns, and he also stood out during the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game practices. Throughout the podcast, Fowler and Jordan discuss what Taylor brings to Memphis' receiving corps with his size and ability to box out defenders. Taylor joins three-stars Cameron Wright and Tyrese Johnson as Memphis' receiver commits for the '21 class, and they all three have great size. With his big-bodied frame, Taylor has the ability to play outside receiver for the Tigers, and they can also slide him to tight end in certain packages if need be. Ryan Silverfield and the staff have built a spectacular '21 class, and Taylor is the cherry on top. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In episode 96 of GT247's Tigers in 20, host and lead writer Christian Fowler, GT247 digital content producer Kenny Stubblefield and GT247 vet Jonah Jordan discuss the latest in Memphis football and basketball. To begin the episode, the crew discusses the Memphis-SMU postponement, which was the Tigers' third consecutive game to be pushed back. With the game against the Mustangs off, Memphis won't play their next game until Sunday against Tulsa which is 20 days from their last game. Fowler, Stubblefield and Jordan break down the positives and negatives of the 20-day layoff, and they also explain how difficult this will make the rest of the season. The UCF game was rescheduled, but now Memphis, SMU, Temple and the AAC have to figure out how/when to reschedule the games. Memphis' last scheduled game against Houston is in March, so they will have a month and a half to play the remaining 17 games on schedule. The trio breaks down how and why this can be problematic moving forward. Next, Fowler and Stubblefield talk about former Tigers James Wiseman and Precious Achiuwa. Wiseman has been a standout for the Golden State Warriors this season, and Achiuwa made his first start with the Miami Heat on Tuesday night. Achiuwa finished his first career start with a career high in minutes (36), points (17) and rebounds (13), and he showed that he can be a viable weapon for the defending Eastern Conference Champions moving forward. Finally, Fowler and Jordan move on to Memphis football and discuss the transfers of Obinna Eze and T.J. Carter. They give their opinions on what the transfers mean, and they also explain who they believe could step up to fill their respective roles next season. Before the episode wraps, Fowler and Jordan give the latest on Memphis wide receiver Calvin Austin. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In this episode of Off the Boards, host and lead writer Christian Fowler and GT247 veteran Jonah Jordan sit down to discuss Grant Gunnell and his transfer to Memphis. The former Arizona quarterback transferred to Memphis on Thursday, and Fowler and Jordan break down what it means for the Tigers. With Brady White now gone, the addition of Gunnell is massive. Memphis was going to have a quarterback competition leading up to next season between former three-star prospect Keilon Brown and LSU transfer Peter Parrish, but Gunnell is now the best quarterback on roster. There will certainly still be a competition because head coach Ryan Silverfield and offensive coordinator Kevin Johns aren't going to hand Gunnell the starting job, but he has to be the heavy favorite to be Memphis' signal caller when the 2021-2022 season begins. Gunnell has the prototypical quarterback size at 6-foot-6, and he has a ton of arm talent and potential. In his limited number of starts with the Wildcats, he proved why he was a very highly touted prospect coming out of high school. Fowler and Jordan discuss what it says about Silverfield and staff now that they've landed transfers from Arizona and Michigan State. With Gunnell and former Spartans Devontae Dobbs and Julian Barnett on board, the staff is proving that they can land elite transfers. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In episode 94 of GT247's Tigers in 20, host and lead writer Christian Fowler, GT247 founder Brooks Hansen, GT247 digital content producer Kenny Stubblefield and GT247 vet Jonah Jordan discuss the latest in Memphis football and basketball. To begin the episode, Fowler and Jordan discuss the recent additions of Michigan State transfers Devontae Dobbs and Julian Barnett. Dobbs and Barnett are the two highest-ranked player to ever commit and sign with Memphis, and coach Ryan Silverfield was able to do that in a matter of hours. Dobbs is a 6-foot-4, 304-pound offensive lineman and Barnett is a 6-foot-2 cornerback/wide receiver, and both players have the potential to make an immediate impact for the Tigers. Fowler and Jordan also go into detail about how much better Memphis has gotten thus far with the 2021 class and the two big time transfers. Next, the GT247 crew previews the Montgomery Bowl between Memphis and Florida Atlantic. The Tigers and the Owls will play on December 23 at 6:00 p.m. CST, and Memphis will be looking for their first bowl win since the 2014 Miami Beach Bowl. Throughout the preview of the game, Fowler, Jordan and Hansen break down why Memphis should win this game and what they need to do to ensure that they come back to Memphis victorious. This will be Brady White's last game in a Memphis uniform, so the players will likely give their all for him. After all the positivity in the football discussion, the mood and tone of the podcast shifts very quickly when the subject moves to basketball. Penny Hardaway and the Tigers lost a game that they definitely should've won against Tulsa, and the loss was a microcosim of the season up to this point. Memphis looked terrible offensively, and they made too many mistakes at the end of the game. The crew gives their thoughts on the loss, and they explain why they believe the Tigers are struggling so badly this year. From the coaching to the players and every aspect in between, the GT247 crew gives their brutally honest opinions. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In episode 91 of GT247's Tigers in 20, host and lead writer Christian Fowler, GT247 founder Brooks Hansen, GT247 digital content producer Kenny Stubblefield and GT247 veteran Jonah Jordan discuss the latest in Memphis football and basketball. To begin the episode, the crew recaps Memphis' win over Central Arkansas and gives their biggest takeaways from the game, including the play of DJ Jeffries, Alex Lomax and Jayden Hardaway among others. After massive shooting struggles through the first four games of the year, Jeffries looked like himself again against UCA. Although it was against an inferior opponent, it's good for Jeffries to build his confidence before AAC play begins. Through five games of his junior season, Lomax has struggled heavily, and the crew explains why he is struggling and how it can be fixed moving forward. Memphis is still looking for a consistent point guard, so it would be big for them if Lomax stepped up at some point this season. During last week's episode, Fowler, Hansen and Stubblefield raved about Jayden Hardaway, and he had his best game of the season against the Bears. Hardaway looked confident, decisive and efficient, and he can definitely be a contributor for the Tigers this season. Next, the topic shifts to football and Memphis' loss against Tulane in New Orleans. The Tigers have now lost two consecutive games in the Big Easy, but Fowler and Jordan explain why they are optimistic for the future. Ryan Silverfield has underwent the most unlucky year for a first-year head coach, and he should be able to turn things around next year. Although Memphis has struggled this season, they are still 6-3 and will go to a bowl game if they accept a bid. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In episode 89 of GT247's Tigers in 20, host and lead writer Christian Fowler, GT247 founder Brooks Hansen GT247 digital content producer Kenny Stubblefield and the newest/oldest member of the team Jonah Jordan discuss the latest in Memphis football and basketball. To begin the episode, the crew recaps Memphis' performance in the Crossover Classic, and they explain what went wrong in losses against Western Kentucky and VCU. The Tigers looked incredible against a solid Saint Mary's team, but they looked like the 2019 version of the team in the final two games of the tournament. Hansen, Fowler and Jordan explain what Memphis needs to do in their two games this week against Arkansas State and Central Arkansas to look like they did against the Gaels. Throughout the discussion, the crew talks about point guard play, Moussa Cisse, Landers Nolley and more. After the basketball discussion, the topic switches to football and the 10-7 win over Navy on Saturday. For the first time in school history, Memphis defeated the Midshipmen in Annapolis, but it certainly wasn't a pretty win. The Tigers struggled running the ball, and they were only able to put up 10 points in a game that they should've won by double digits. In the win, the defense had their best performance of the season which is an encouraging sign. Jordan and Fowler break down the win over Navy, and they explain what they will be looking for from the Tigers moving forward. Following the win over Navy, Memphis will be in New Orleans, Louisiana this weekend to face Tulane. When Memphis traveled to face Tulane in 2018 they suffered an embarrassing loss, and the GT247 crew explains what the Tigers need to do to knock off the Green Wave. Learn more about your ad choices.
