In this episode of Off the Boards, host and lead writer Christian Fowler and GT247 founder Brooks Hansen break down Memphis' addition of former Miami guard Earl Timberlake. In his freshman season with the Hurricanes, Timberlake averaged 9.3 points, five rebounds and 2.4 assists per game while shooting nearly 45 percent from the floor. Timberlake was limited to seven games last season due to injury, and he will have an opportunity to prove himself in the Bluff City. Coming out of high school, Timberlake was the No. 35 overall player in the country and many saw him as an NBA draft prospect before his injury. Fowler and Hansen explain how Timberlake fits into Memphis' offensive and defensive plans next to the returning players. The former Hurricane isn't a great shooter, but he excels in put backs, rebounds and defensive versatility. 247Sports recently rated Timberlake as the No. 6 overall player in the transfer portal, so this is obviously a massive addition for the Tigers. With the addition of Timberlake, Memphis has now added two high level transfers, and Hardaway and the staff will continue to pursue options in the NCAA transfer portal. The Memphis basketball program sailed into the offseason on the strength of its recent NIT championship run.  The Tigers ran the table at the postseason tournament, beating Dayton, Boise State, Colorado State and Mississippi State to win the crown for the second time (2002).  On this week's episode of the Tiger Basketball Podcast, beat writer Jason Munz and columnist Mark Giannotto discuss the significance of the team's strong finish, what was most impressive about its season and how the current roster might change in the coming weeks.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In episode 106 of GT247's Tigers in 20, host and lead writer Christian Fowler and GoTigers247 digital content creator Kenny Stubblefield discuss the latest in Memphis football and basketball. To begin the episode, the duo recaps Memphis' first round win over Dayton on Saturday. The Tigers out-rebounded the Flyers 44-to-26, and they also had 15 more offensive rebounds which is one of the main reasons they came out with a win.  One of the biggest matchups to watch in the game was Memphis' guards vs. star guard Jalen Crutcher, and the Tigers shut him down. Fowler and Stubblefield break down how Memphis held him to six points and 3-of-10 shooting. Next, the GT247 crew shifts the focus to Memphis' upcoming game against Boise State. The Broncos defeated SMU by one point last week, and they will present a very difficult test for the Tigers. Boise State has a ton of length on their roster, and Derrick Alston Jr. and Emmanuel Akot are both long, skilled players who can give Memphis' defense trouble. Penny Hardaway and the staff will have to come up with a very solid game plan to slow down the Broncos' high powered offense. For the year, Boise State averages 76 points per game, so Memphis will have their hands full on Thursday night. Currently, the Tigers sit at a 4.5-point favorite, so it will likely be a tightly contested game. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In episode 103 of GT247's Tigers in 20, host and lead writer Christian Fowler and GoTigers247 founder Brooks Hansen discuss the latest in Memphis football and basketball. To begin the episode, Fowler and Hansen discuss Memphis' six-game winning streak and how they can put everything together going into the conference tournament. The Tigers picked up a 21-point win over South Florida earlier this week, and the biggest game of the season is coming up on Sunday against No. 9 Houston.  Penny Hardaway and the Tigers have won nine of their last 10 games, and they have won three consecutive games since returning from the 18-day COVID-19 pause. Memphis has been solid on both ends of the floor, but they must play one of the best games of the season to defeat one of the best teams in the country. Houston is nearly unbeatable at home, so the Tigers must do the unthinkable. If Memphis is able to pull off an upset win over the Cougars, then they will have a ton of momentum heading into the American Athletic Conference Tournament next week. Throughout the episode, the duo discusses both Boogie Ellis and Landers Nolley and what they can do to help Memphis beat Houston and make a run in the conference tournament. Ellis has hit 52 percent of his shots from deep since Memphis returned from the pause, and he has been the Tigers' best offensive weapon. Although Nolley is the team's leading scorer, he has been pretty quiet over the last several games. Despite players like Ellis stepping up on the offensive end of the floor, Memphis needs Nolley to be more of a dangerous scoring threat moving forward. Finally, the GT247 crew explains why they are so excited for Sunday's matchup, and both Fowler and Hansen believe it will be one of the better games this season. Learn more about your ad choices. Taylor signed with Memphis on National Signing Day after Tennessee pulled his offer on Tuesday, and he is the highest rated player in the Tigers' 2021 class. With the addition of Taylor, Memphis' 2021 class is up to No. 45 overall in the 247Sports Team Rankings. Taylor is currently ranked as the No. 440 overall player in the class and the No. 15 overall player from the state of Alabama. The three-star prospect was named first-team all-state in Alabama's Class 6A after racking up over 1,000 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns, and he also stood out during the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game practices. Throughout the podcast, Fowler and Jordan discuss what Taylor brings to Memphis' receiving corps with his size and ability to box out defenders. Taylor joins three-stars Cameron Wright and Tyrese Johnson as Memphis' receiver commits for the '21 class, and they all three have great size. With his big-bodied frame, Taylor has the ability to play outside receiver for the Tigers, and they can also slide him to tight end in certain packages if need be. Ryan Silverfield and the staff have built a spectacular '21 class, and Taylor is the cherry on top. To begin the episode, Fowler and Stubblefield break down Memphis' four-point win over SMU on Tuesday night. Despite trailing by 13 points in the first half, the Tigers were able to go on a 17-2 run and secure their first lead before the halftime break. After the half, Memphis and SMU went back and forth, but the Tigers were able to outlast the Mustangs. With the win over SMU, Memphis now has sole possession of second in the American Athletic Conference, and they are on an impressive three-game winning streak. Over the past three games, the Tigers have looked like a different team. Memphis has hit 10-plus threes in all of their last three contests, and they've also shot 50 percent or better from the floor in back-to-back games. The GT247 crew discusses performances from Moussa Cisse, Alex Lomax and DJ Jeffries among others. Cisse had his fourth career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, Lomax led the team in scoring with 14 points and Jeffries seemingly got out of his shooting slump with 12 points. To begin the episode, Fowler and Stubblefield discuss Memphis' massive 20-point win over Wichita State. The Shockers came into the game as the second best team in the AAC with a 4-1 conference record, but the Tigers dominated the game. Memphis has struggled to finish games this season, so I'm sure there weren't many fans holding their breath when the Tigers went into the half with a six-point lead. With Wichita State shooting terribly in the first half, there were likely many who expected the Shockers to came out and run away with the game in the second half. If that was you, then I can't really blame you. Memphis just blew a six-point halftime lead against Tulsa, but the Tigers came out in the second half and looked incredible. It was the Tigers' best performance in a half since the first game of the season against Saint Mary's, and the GT247 crew explains what Penny Hardaway and the Tigers need to do to sustain this success moving forward. To begin the episode, Fowler and Jordan discuss the recent additions of Michigan State transfers Devontae Dobbs and Julian Barnett. Dobbs and Barnett are the two highest-ranked player to ever commit and sign with Memphis, and coach Ryan Silverfield was able to do that in a matter of hours. Dobbs is a 6-foot-4, 304-pound offensive lineman and Barnett is a 6-foot-2 cornerback/wide receiver, and both players have the potential to make an immediate impact for the Tigers. Fowler and Jordan also go into detail about how much better Memphis has gotten thus far with the 2021 class and the two big time transfers. Next, the GT247 crew previews the Montgomery Bowl between Memphis and Florida Atlantic. The Tigers and the Owls will play on December 23 at 6:00 p.m. CST, and Memphis will be looking for their first bowl win since the 2014 Miami Beach Bowl. Throughout the preview of the game, Fowler, Jordan and Hansen break down why Memphis should win this game and what they need to do to ensure that they come back to Memphis victorious. This will be Brady White's last game in a Memphis uniform, so the players will likely give their all for him. After all the positivity in the football discussion, the mood and tone of the podcast shifts very quickly when the subject moves to basketball. Penny Hardaway and the Tigers lost a game that they definitely should've won against Tulsa, and the loss was a microcosim of the season up to this point. Memphis looked terrible offensively, and they made too many mistakes at the end of the game. The Tigers and the Gaels met in the first game of the Bad Boy Mowers Crossover Classic, and Memphis dominated the game. Although they started the game slow, Memphis controlled the game from the middle of the first half to the end of the game. Despite only being 5-point favorites, Memphis clearly showed who the best team was on Wednesday. Miller stepped down as an assistant coach last week, and Hansen briefly breaks it down. Although they discuss it some, Hansen goes into very specific detail in this week's VIP podcast. Next, the trio talks about five-star center Moussa Cisse. Although he was expected to make an announcement last week, Cisse pushed back his commitment. Fowler and Stubblefield were able to watch Cisse and four-star point guard and Memphis target Carter Whitt on Tuesday, so they break down what they saw in each player. Following the discussion on Cisse and Whitt, the trio breaks down Memphis' two newest offers. On Tuesday night, Penny Hardaway and the staff offered five-stars Jalen Duren and Justice Williams. Duren and Williams are former teammates, and the former in the No. 2 overall player in the 2022 class while the latter is the No. 24 overall prospect. Hansen discusses their games and explains briefly what they could look like at the next level. Finally, Fowler briefly discusses football recruiting and what fans can expect next in the 2021 class. Fowler and Hansen begin the episode by discussing Memphis quarterback Brady White – who announced on Wednesday night that he will return to Memphis for his redshirt senior season. White has been mulling over his options since the Tigers Cotton Bowl loss, and fortunately for Memphis coach Ryan Silverfield and the fanbase he chose to return. White is coming off of a season where he was fourth in the country in yards and eighth in touchdown passes. After discussing White's return, Fowler and Hansen discuss Memphis' new defensive coordinator – Mike MacIntyre. The Tigers new defensive coordinator spent 2019 turning around Ole Miss' defense after they were one of the worst in the country in 2018. Before going to Ole Miss, MacIntyre was the head coach at Colorado where he led the Buffs to a Pac-12 South Division Title in 2016. In the same year, MacIntyre was also named the Associated Press Coach of the Year.  Although Memphis lost a ton of coaches to Florida State, Silverfield has made some home run hires, and the Tigers shouldn't miss a beat in 2020. The duo begins the episode by discussing the Tigers 51-47 win over Tennessee on Saturday. The win was Penny Hardaway's first victory over a top 25 opponent, and it was fitting to come against Rick Barnes and the Vols. Although the Tigers only scored five points in the first 12 minutes, they found a way to battle back and beat a very good team in a hostile environment. Saturday's game was only Memphis' second true road game of the season, but they handled it very well. Instead of folding when Tennessee went up early, they continued to fight and battle back. Fowler and Hansen discuss the ins and outs of the game and how the Tigers knocked off the Vols. Next, the duo discusses changes to the Tigers coaching staff with Ryan Silverfield at the helm. Defensive coordinator Adam Fuller left for Florida State last week, and Silverfield told the media on Tuesday that Fuller will not coach the Tigers in the Cotton Bowl. As a former players, Bruce said Saturday's game against Cincinnati was incredible for him. Although he wasn't at the game, Bruce said he watched every play and tuned in for the trophy presentation after the game. Bruce said it was a special moment for him because he was able to reflect on his career and how far the program had come since he left. After the discussion of the game, Bruce talks about what he saw from the Tigers offense this season and explains what makes Coxie and Gibson such big playmakers. Bruce played on one of the best offenses in the history of the NFL with the St. Louis Rams, and he said there are a lot of similarities with Memphis' offense this year. As someone who played with one of the best receiving backs in NFL history in Marshall Faulk, Bruce explains the importance of having a versatile running back like Kenny Gainwell. Following the discussion on Memphis football, Bruce reflects on his playing career in the NFL and what made him such an incredible receiver. Bruce isn't in the Hall of Fame yet, but his resume speaks for itself. When the former Tigers retired from the NFL, he was No. 2 all-time in receiving yards behind Jerry Rice, fifth all-time in receptions and ninth in touchdowns.
