This week on Friends Talking Nerdy, Professor Aubrey and Tim the Nerd dust off the record player and go head-to-head once again in The Musicwed Game — the game where friendship meets finely tuned musical instincts. Each picks five songs they believe the other will love, and whoever racks up the most correct guesses earns bragging rights as the reigning music whisperer. The playlist this round is as eclectic as ever — a sonic road trip through dusty border towns, cosmic dance floors, and smoky backroom stages. You'll hear talk of the swaggering “Canción del Mariachi” from Antonio Banderas and Los Lobos, the bittersweet twang of Glen Campbell's “Galveston,” and the glitter-soaked groove of Ace Frehley's “New York Groove.” From the haunting “This Mess We're In” (PJ Harvey featuring Thom Yorke) to the gospel fire of Sister Rosetta Tharpe's “Strange Things Happening Every Day,” every track sparks stories, laughter, and passionate debate.Rounding out the mix are Orville Peck's outlaw spin on “Born This Way (The Country Road Version),” the late-90s alt-pop gem “F.N.T.” by Semisonic, the heartfelt lift of Patty Griffin's “Top of the World,” the fiery “Malagueña Salerosa” by CHINGÓN, and the introspective “Just By Myself” from Greg Brown.Whether you're a die-hard music nerd or just love hearing two friends geek out with gusto, this episode hits all the right notes — nostalgia, discovery, and a few good-natured arguments about what makes a song perfectly Tim or undeniably Aubrey.
Look both ways — and then tune in! Greg talked about winning in 2026 and why Heaney didn't fit into that equation. Where does Jack Suwinski fit into future plans? Greg doesn't dismiss Konnor Griffin starting 2026 with the big-league club, but noted that it is still unlikely. In this episode, Greg Brown unpacks the difference between setting goals and raising your standards. Most people set the same goals over and over—lose weight, get in shape, eat better—yet fail to achieve them. Why? Because goals are destinations, but standards are the daily behaviors that actually drive results. Greg explains why relying on goals keeps you stuck, and how shifting to non-negotiable standards transforms not just your body, but your identity. At Transcend Performance, we work exclusively with go-getters who see themselves as winners—men and women already thriving in their careers, businesses, and family life, but who feel their body doesn't match the excellence they've built everywhere else. If you're ready to raise your standards and make your physical presence as sharp as your success, this episode is for you.Connect with Greg & Transcend Performance
At this year's EUVC Summit, the “Newcomer of the Year” award didn't go to someone just making noise—it went to a team making real moves. A team built for the long game. A team proving that even when entering late, you can lead early.Shapers VC took home the honor. And in the words of Phil himself:“Being new is not easy. But this team makes it look easy.”What makes a great newcomer? At EUVC, we looked for three things:Performance — Are they picking winners or building platforms?Perspective — Are they differentiated, or derivative?Community & Conviction — Are they lifting the ecosystem around them?Shapers VC showed up on all three.Backed by over 60 FinTech founders and operators, they're building the kind of platform that's more than capital. It's signal. It's support. It's sweat equity from people who've been in the trenches.“Community is core to us. Most of our LPs are strategic—it's what makes our model work.”– Greg Brown, Shapers VCGreg put it simply:“When everyone else left the party, that's when we showed up.”Shapers wasn't chasing a trend. They were responding to a gap—stepping in when others were stepping back. In FinTech, timing is everything. And they timed it with intent.“It probably feels weird to receive an award just as we're getting started. But shining a light on emerging managers matters—and we're honored to be in that spotlight.”Phil's closing message was one we believe in deeply:“There are so many strong emerging managers striking out on their own right now. Some are in this room. Recognizing them isn't just nice—it's necessary.”At EUVC, we don't just celebrate the legends. We champion the next ones. And if this year's award is any sign—Shapers VC is one to watch. Why It Matters: Community, Conviction & TimingThe Power of Showing Up Late (and Ready)Betting on the Next Generation
With the guys stuck in traffic heading to Studio B, Donny had to start the show. He reacted to the words from Mike Tomlin on his philosophy of playing guys, or not doing so, in the preseason. Donny made the argument that Tomlin should play most of the starters, if healthy. Several big-name QBs play around the league and multiple teams in better spots than the Steelers play their starters at least a little bit. The guys have arrived. They gave thoughts on Mike Tomlin not playing most starters in the second preseason game. Is it the right play? Greg can't argue with the fact that teams with the same issues as the Pirates are always more successful. Greg says that it is possible that the Pirates will go after a top of the line free agent in 2026.
