Eddie and Bob give a breakdown of what they learned this week during media access as we are just over a week away from the annual spring game. What is the expectation level for this defense? How much better can they be? Are we learning anything about the safety position yet? The players also always seem to have something interesting to say about the changes between last year and this year. This year some hints that the corners feel like Jay Valai is a step up in teaching over the previous staff. We also breakdown our thoughts on everyone else's thoughts on Baker Mayfield's podcast comments. Josh gives a rundown of what stood out to him at Rivals Camp Dallas which includes some interesting anecdotes on David Stone. In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino return to the studio to discuss the Trojans first Coliseum spring practice of the Lincoln Riley era, giving all of the new coaches and players their first taste of football in USC's historic home. They discuss what Riley and the other coaches and players said about being able to practice in that environment and how Riley wants to see the Coliseum full for the spring game and of course when football season starts in September. The Trojans are now done with 10 of their allotted 15 spring practices and Riley wants to focus on the team finishing strong. "Losers coast, average programs coast," Riley said. There will be no coasting to the finish for the Trojans as they have one more practice and scrimmage in the Coliseum before the spring game in front of fans on April 23 at noon, shown live in ESPN. Tuesday's Coliseum practice also held live periods where the team scrimmaged. We were unable to watch those portions of practice but afterwards Riley said that it was back-and-forth between the offense and the defense with the offense getting the early jump, the defense finishing strong and overall he said the defense won the day. The guys also talk about a bunch of new names that have been gold-plated, given their Trojan logo helmet sticker for the work they have put in on the practice field and meeting rooms. Former USC quarterback J.T. Daniels has found a new home, reuniting with former USC offensive coordinator Graham Harrell at West Virginia. Daniels had visited Oregon State which would have given him the opportunity to play against the Trojans in 2022, but with his commitment to WVU he will now get to play against the player that replaced him in 2019 following his knee injury, new Pitt quarterback Kedon Slovis. Such is the soap opera that is college football. With the loss of five-star OT Josh Conerly to Oregon, USC will now have to look to the NCAA Transfer Portal to shore up the offensive line after spring ball. On Wednesday another potential option entered the portal, Texas A&M lineman Derick Hunter who played for USC offensive line coach Josh Henson. Ryan and Chris will be doing regular podcasts together going forward, so make sure you send in your questions addressed to them at email@example.com. North Carolina's magical run to New Orleans ended in defeat late Monday night and the emotional devastation from the loss was evident across the board both within the UNC basketball program and throughout the fandom. Another week of spring football media almost in the books and we continue to breakdown the things we're hearing during interviews and reflecting more on what we've seen on the practice fields this spring. We talk about some of the expectations from veterans with this new coaching staff as well as being happy there hasn't been a lot of talk about Dillon Gabriel in practices. What we're seeing has been much more important. How much will we see during the spring game with a new coaching staff? Will the new systems on offense and defense mean more meaningful playing time for key starters? Well, maybe, as long as they survive these physical practices we've been seeing. Also, how many people do we think are going to show up a ;little more than two weeks away from the spring game? We talk about our impressions from interviews this week including Wanya Morris and Mckade Mettauer on the offensive line. The coaches caravans are back to and they'll even be a stop in Carey's hometown of Duncan, America! Also Eddie blows Carey's mind with a factoid from the HBO series Winning Time. Who knew Eddie had cinema knowledge bumping around with all that golf knowledge? Josh takes us on the recruiting trail with the Rivals Camp coming up in Dallas this weekend and we continue to put together the visit list for the spring game. Also, what does Josh make out of what is happening at Texas A&M and their latest recruiting wins? The full rundown follows below: 00:00 - We're back and the Sooner Caravan is BACK! 38:00 - Okay we're going to talk OU football. We promise. 59:00 - Recapping our Monday with the Sooners defense 1:21:00 - Recruiting 1:32:00 - A&M a problem?

In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino return to the studio to discuss the first open to the media full-pads spring football practice for the Trojans. After two practices in helmets and jerseys, the USC football team was in full pads for their Saturday (closed) and Tuesday (partially open) workouts. With offensive players and coaches available on Tuesday, the focus moved away from the skill players and honed in on the big guys up front, the offensive line. Head coach Lincoln Riley went in depth about his thoughts on the offensive line, a group with a lot of experience that still has a way to go to learn the new offensive system brought in by Riley and company. We also discuss what offensive line coach Josh Henson had to say about his unit, including who the current starting five players are, and we hear from several of those starters to get their thoughts on adjusting to a new offense. The guys also dive into some of the other topics from USC spring practice like Riley talking about adding double-digit players to the roster after spring football ends. USC currently has 76 players on scholarship and with more defections probable, it gives Riley more room to add players from the NCAA Transfer Portal. Ryan and Chris were each able to talk to a new assistant coach for the first time this spring, interim inside wide receivers coach Luke Huard and tight ends coach Zach Hanson. They also discuss some of the candid comments made by running back Darwin Barlow, comparing the complexity of last year's offensive system to this year's. Lastly the guys share an interesting tidbit they learned from talking to offensive lineman Courtland Ford, a new practice incentive program for USC football players. According to Ford, if a player performs well at practice he will get a "gold plate" for his helmet. We originally thought he meant some sort of helmet sticker system like other programs use, but apparently it is a type of enhancement to the current USC Trojan logo on the side of the player's helmet. The guys talk about breaking away from tradition here and if implementing a system like this would be a positive or a negative. Ryan and Chris will be doing regular podcasts together going forward, so make sure you send in your questions addressed to them at firstname.lastname@example.org. Coach Harvey Hyde returns on the Peristyle Podcast to give his unique perspective on what has been going on around the USC football program including the first week of spring football practice in the books and the unfortunate passing if inside wide receivers coach Dave Nichol. Coach and cohost Ryan Abraham discuss some of the emerging leaders on the team, including a couple of transfers that have stepped up, they share some of the latest news on the NCAA Transfer Portal front, a walk-on kicker gets a scholarship and a huge recruit was on campus this past weekend that could have a significant impact on the 2022 USC football season. The guys talk about St Peters in the NCAA tourney, Crossfit Quarterfinals, and variety of other quick topics amidst a larger theme of Spring Football. That of which started this past week in Iowa City for the Hawkeyes. One of the most important phases of the year, a time where veterans continue to build into leadership roles, and young guys find meaningful field reps for the first time in their career.
Tunnel Vision returns with USCFootball.com publisher Ryan Abraham and reporter Chris Trevino in studio joined by Shotgun Spratling back on the East Coast plus intern Nicole Shearin producing. This week on the show we recap the first week of USC spring football with two practices that were partially open to the media and players and coaches from both sides of the ball were available for interviews. Ryan, Chris and Nicole were all there in person taking in the action and asking the player and staff questions afterwards. The team will also address the tragic news that inside wide receivers coach Dave Nichol passed away on Friday and discuss what head coach Lincoln Riley had to say about his long time friend and mentor during his Saturday Zoom call. In this edition of the Peristyle Podcast hosts Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino return to the studio to break down all of the news and notes from the highly anticipated first day of USC spring football. New head coach Lincoln Riley has been at the helm about 100 days and on Tuesday he got his first opportunity to see his new squad practicing officially on Howard Jones Field. Riley called his roster one of the most unique in college football history with tons of turnover and new additions out of the NCAA Transfer Portal. The guys talk about what Riley had to say about not being finished with his retooling of the roster, with 10 or more players to be added between now and the start of fall camp in August. The guys also talk about the offensive position groups, starting with the quarterbacks and highly touted Oklahoma quarterback transfer Caleb Williams. The media was able to talk to Williams for the very first time in a USC jersey and the true sophomore did not disappoint, holding court in front of a large group of reports. Williams showed off his infectious personality and showed why he was able to come in and establish himself as a leader on this team despite only being on campus for a little over a month. They also talk about the running back room that is down to three scholarship backs at the moment and the wide receivers where several high profile transfers came in, including Mario Williams from Oklahoma. They also talk about the USC Pro Day which featured 15 former Trojan football players including potential first rounder Drake Jackson (who looked much bigger than he did just a few months ago). There was still no Drake London due to his injury, but he plans on doing his own workout on campus in early April. Ryan and Chris will be doing regular podcasts together going forward, so make sure you send in your questions addressed to them at email@example.com. We were able to see a bunch of practice yesterday in Norman and it was glorious. The entire gang is here to talk about our first impressions of Dillon Gabriel, Jeff Lebby, Brent Venables and more. We also got to talk to some of the defensive standouts after practice and we'll relay what stood out about some of those conversations as well. We try and dive into the differences we're seeing so far in this staff and the last staff. We also talk with Josh about the differences in recruiting philosophies between this staff and the former staff. Also, Grimlock gets his public shaming for his drunk texting and dialing at 2:30 am over the weekend. And we decide on ultimate punishment. Why is Josh concerned there will be no commitments from a big recruiting weekend coming up? And we allow Bob to put a wrap on the hoops season after he gets his computer issues worked out. Which made Carey almost lose it today. The full rundown follows below: 00:00 - Spring football is here! 50:33 - Offensive line talk 54:00 - Grimlock Drunk Calling Carey 1:05:00 - Big recruiting weekend/philosophy
Basketball season is over for Ohio State and spring football practice resumes this week for the Buckeyes. What does Chris Holtmann need to accomplish in 2022-23 in order to get the fans on his side? On the football front, this will be the week when the Buckeyes start implementing schematic changes on both sides of the ball; mostly on defense of course. But there will be tweaks on offense as well with Justin Frye now leading the offensive line. Dave Biddle flies solo on this edition of the Monday 5ish to discuss that and much more. It is equal parts Ohio State basketball and football on today's show as Patrick Murphy joins Dave Biddle. The Buckeyes received a No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament and will play 10th-seeded Loyola-Chicago in the first round on Friday at 12:15 p.m. ET. Is it a difficult matchup for OSU? Yes. But that would have been the case when facing any of the 10 seeds in this year's Big Dance. Also: * Why are the Buckeyes such a poor defensive basketball team? * Does Patrick think Kyle Young and Zed Key will play against the Ramblers? * What were the big takeaways from the first week of spring football? * Will the Buckeyes' offensive line be better this season? If so, why? All of that and more is coming your way on the Monday 5ish. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
