The guys from Dawgman.com - Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters, and Scott Eklund - got together this week to break down what they saw from the defensive side of the ball during spring football. Over the course of 14 practices and a spring game, there was a ton to talk about, as well as any questions left unanswered depending on who was available and who wasn't.Starting with the EDGE players and working their way down the order position-by-position, Kim, Chris, and Scott broke down their observations with one eye on spring ball and also with one eye focused on what it all means as the team heads toward the offseason and into training camp in August. And so many questions to answer... Who were the standouts? Who took big strides during April? Who took advantage of their opportunities? Who needed to show more? With so many first year players getting ample turns with other defensive players limited or out of spring football altogether, who were the players that the coaches relied on?

Oregon football has moved through spring practice, and while the Ducks are still months away from opening the 2026 season, the shape of the offensive depth chart is beginning to come into focus. On this edition of the Autzen Audibles Podcast, Matt Prehm, Erik Skopil, and John Evans take a position-by-position look at Oregon's projected offensive two-deep coming out of spring football and heading into the summer months. The guys break down where things stand at quarterback with Dante Moore back for his second season as the starter, how the offensive line is being rebuilt after multiple NFL departures, and what to make of a skill-position group that features plenty of high-end talent but also a few important depth-chart questions. The conversation also dives into Oregon's wide receiver room, the tight end rotation, running back depth, and which young players could push for bigger roles when fall camp arrives. With new offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer now leading the offense, there are plenty of storylines to track as the Ducks work toward another Big Ten title push. They open with a discussion about the Wolverines' quarterback room. They discuss Tommy Carr's big spring, what that means for Carr and Michigan and how much stock to put into a strong first impression. They also look at Bryce Underwood's spring, what Michigan is doing to help him develop and what they learned about him this spring. They continue with a look at the running back room, including Savion Hiter's strong spring showcase, and what the rest of the room may look like. In the second half of the episode, they look at the Wolverines' wide receiver room, which is as revamped and improved as any on Michigan's roster. They discuss Andrew Marsh, JJ Buchanan, Salesi Moa, Jaime Ffrench and the rest of the room so far. They continue with a look at the depth of the tight end room, and close with a look at a bigger, more experienced offensive line, and how things may shake out up front. Discover how the Minnesota Vikings' Blitz Rate and other curated pressure packages are redefining modern NFL defensive efficiency. This episode analyzes the technical data behind simulated pressures, 3rd-down stunting, and why volume blitzing fails against elite processing quarterbacks.—In this episode:Rookie Minicamp as Spring Ball: These sessions act as “spring practice” for first- through third-year players who have not yet established themselves as starters, providing a critical window for development and roster security.Processing Over Raw Traits: Athleticism and arm strength are secondary to a quarterback's ability to process the field and maintain accuracy, as raw “traits” rarely translate to success without high-level command. The Vikings' Aggression Blueprint: As a major schematic outlier, Minnesota utilizes a 51% blitz rate while effectively protecting its secondary by running zone coverage behind those pressures 77% of the time.Curated Disguise vs. Volume: Defensive efficiency is driven by disguising intent rather than total volume; for instance, simulated pressures correlate more closely with static two-high shell structures than with high-rotation back ends.Situational Stunting: Data shows stunting is largely ineffective against the run (occurring on only 4% of rundowns) and should be prioritized on passing downs to manipulate protections and force internal pressure.—Timestamps:00:00 - Rookie Minicamp as Spring Football 02:21 - Anthony Richardson: Traits vs. Processing 03:41 - The Indianapolis QB Carousel 06:09 - The CJ Stroud Extension Dilemma 19:00 - Defining Defensive Aggression in 2026 22:13 - Outlier Study: The Minnesota Vikings 31:50 - Shell Trends: Two-High vs. Single-High Blitzing 39:39 - Simulated Pressures and Coverage Disguise 44:03 - Stunting: Passing Downs vs. Run Downs 54:26 - Volume vs. Disguise in Pressure Packages—» Join Felix and Cody each Wednesday as we dive deep into the game we love!MatchQuarters is a reader-supported publication.
