Paul Leonardi is an expert in technology management and has developed a deep understanding for why today's digital tools—even those that are helpful—can contribute to our growing sense of exhaustion. Pulling from research he's written about in his book Digital Exhaustion, he explains why this happens and as importantly, what we can do about it. Chapters: 02:00 Why Digital Exhaustion? Paul Leonardi discusses his 20-year career helping companies implement new technologies and his observation of the increasing dread people feel towards new tools. He highlights how the solutions to digital overload are not working, leading to widespread exhaustion. 04:36 The Types of Digital Switching Paul explains three kinds of digital switching: between modalities (apps), domains of work, and arenas (work/home). He emphasizes that these switches, though seemingly innocuous, cause significant cognitive strain and mental exhaustion due to the brain's reorientation time. 07:20 Cumulative Exhaustion and Control Paul explains that digital exhaustion is a cumulative problem, building slowly over time from seemingly small attention switches. 11:29 Expectations and Response Patterns Paul discusses how people tend to overestimate the urgency of messages and fall into a 'hero symptom' of quick responses, leading to a vicious cycle. He explains how this creates an exhausting game of chase, where individuals try to outdo each other in fast replies. 14:35 Strategies for Managing Expectations Paul suggests asking for clarity on urgency and adopting a philosophy of 'waiting' (one hour, one day, one week) to reset response patterns. He also highlights the effectiveness of out-of-office messages and direct communication in setting realistic expectations and reducing perceived urgency. 20:59 Measuring Digital Exhaustion Paul describes his 'Digital Exhaustion' rating, inspired by the Maslach Burnout Inventory, which measures how much digital tools wear people out. He reveals a precipitous rise in digital exhaustion rates from 2002 to 2022, with major spikes in 2010 (smartphones/social media) and 2021 (pandemic). 26:10 Unforced Errors and Self-Views Paul discusses 'unforced errors' like sleeping with phones in bed and constantly viewing oneself during video calls, which contribute to exhaustion. He explains how the 'self-view' on video platforms is a metaphor for the constant self-curation and inference-making we do across all online platforms, leading to mental fatigue. 31:08 The Exhaustion of Upward Comparison Paul references a 1950s Stanford study on upward comparison and how social media amplifies this, leading to exhaustion from comparing oneself to others' curated ideal lives. He discusses how AI will further exacerbate this issue by creating unrealistic avatars for comparison. 36:07 Antidotes and Small Wins Paul suggests taking online content at face value without extrapolating deeper meanings to combat upward comparison and the stories we create. 42:45 Resonance and Pushback Paul shares that the most pleasing feedback on his book is the distinction between a sustainable approach to digital exhaustion versus unsustainable digital detoxes. The main pushback he receives is about the 'waiting' strategy, with people fearing it will make them seem impolite or ghosting.

She discusses why she's drawn to treating a broader range of illnesses beyond musculoskeletal issues, why nursing and PA programs don't feel like the right fit for her, and how her public health background is preparing her to be a more compassionate, team-oriented provider. They explore what makes a good doctor — from communication skills to humility about working with other healthcare professionals. The conversation touches on systemic issues: why there's a doctor shortage despite months-long wait times, how the healthcare system often works against physicians, and the pressure of being put on a pedestal while having only minutes with each patient. But it also celebrates the possibility of excellence, with Alyssa sharing a story about an exceptional obstetrician who exemplified what patient-centered care looks like. This is a vulnerable, thoughtful discussion about career paths, healthcare challenges, and the determination it takes to pursue a calling despite knowing all the obstacles ahead.TakeawaysGetting into medical school is extremely competitive, even as we face a doctor shortageThe path to becoming a physician is long and demanding — but it acts as a filter for those truly committedPatients often feel disappointed by rushed appointments and communication gaps with their doctorsSystemic issues (limited appointment times, administrative burdens) often aren't the doctor's faultGood doctors communicate clearly, show compassion, and work well with the entire healthcare teamHaving a public health background and allied health family members provides valuable perspectiveAcademic strength and motivation are crucial — medical school rewards those who are good at schoolBeing a good provider means making the most of whatever time you have with patientsThe most important qualities: confidence, clear communication, respect for colleagues, and patient-first thinkingChapters0:10–1:30 – Introduction: A Sister's Concerns About Medical School1:31–3:33 – Concern #1: The Challenge of Getting In3:34–7:24 – Exploring Alternatives: DO Programs, International Schools, PA & NP Paths7:25–9:28 – What Draws Nadia to Medicine vs. Other Healthcare Careers9:29–11:56 – Why Not Nursing or PA? In this conversation, Darren Hansen and Alex Gibson discuss the complexities of athlete development, balancing personal life with business, and the importance of foundational skills in sports training. They explore the misconceptions surrounding fitness in sports, the significance of speed and high outputs, and the role of coaches in guiding young athletes. The discussion emphasizes the need for a holistic approach to training that prioritizes long-term development over immediate results.Takeaways:Balancing family and business is a significant challenge for facility owners.Finding the right staff is crucial for running a successful training facility.Youth athletes often face pressure to perform at a high level too early.Foundational skills like coordination and balance are essential for athlete development.Speed and power metrics are critical for assessing athlete performance.Injury prevention should be a priority in in-season training.Fitness tests do not always correlate with on-field performance.High outputs in training lead to better performance and fewer injuries.Coaches need to understand the specific demands of the sport they are training for.Athletes should be encouraged to enjoy the process of training rather than focusing solely on outcomes.Chapters:00:00Introduction to Athlete Development2:35 Balancing Parenthood and Coaching5:28 Navigating Staff and Facility Growth8:23 The Importance of Coordination in Youth Sports11:07 Managing Expectations in Youth Athletic Development13:52 Understanding Outputs: Speed and Power Metrics21:58 The Evolution of Speed and Power in Sports27:10 Understanding Conditioning vs. Performance31:15 The Importance of High-Output Training38:14 Building Speed Reserve for Game PerformanceKeywordsathlete development, coaching, parenting, sports training, youth sports, speed training, injury prevention, foundational skills, athlete performance, coaching strategies

Setting and Managing Expectations - Mike CohnMy first Scrum project was incredibly successful, yet it was almost a failure. All of the technical aspects of the project were going extremely well. We were ahead of schedule, stress and scalability tests showed that we'd exceed uptime and reliability goals. Everyone on the team was having fun and doing their best work. The problem was that user expectations had been growing faster than the functionality being developed. The project was call center software to be used by hundreds of nurses initially, scaling to thousands. Nurses would use the system to triage patients, provide advice, dispatch emergency personnel when needed and so on.In monthly sprint reviews with the nurse users, I was routinely shocked by what they'd come to expect, some of which wasn't even technically feasible. With about three months left on the year-long project, I realized my focus had to change. From then on, I spent almost all of my time on expectations management.I met with nurses in each of the call centers and described exactly what would and would not be in the delivered system. I toned down their expectations about the system's impact on world peace, global warming, and personal weight loss.Had I not done this, the product would have been perceived as a failure.Since that project, I have been acutely aware of the importance of expectations management to the overall success of any project. Setting and managing expectations is perhaps even more important when an organization seeks to adopt or improve its agility. With agile improvement efforts, I find it helpful to set and manage expectations about four things: How quickly teams will improveHow long it will take to gain additional predictability from the team's new way of workingHow there will almost always come a time when turning back looks easier than sticking with itThe level of involvement in the transition that will be necessary from various stakeholders and organization leadersBy properly setting expectations you can avoid the problem of having an otherwise successful transition or project sunk by unrealistic expectations,How to connect with AgileDad:- [website] https://www.agiledad.com/- [instagram] https://www.instagram.com/agile_coach/- [facebook] https://www.facebook.com/RealAgileDad/- [Linkedin] https://www.linkedin.com/in/leehenson/

Summary The meeting was day three of a launch week focused on complications in surgery, presented by a surgeon who is also an author, podcast host, and certified coach. The presenter emphasized that complications are inevitable in surgical practice and provided guidance on how to manage them effectively. The presenter began by outlining the main topics to be covered: understanding what a complication is, perfectionist thinking, asking for help, the prolonged stress cycle, self-compassion, managing negative emotions, shame resilience, confidence and self-confidence, and peer review assessment. The presenter defined a complication as a failure to achieve a stated outcome, specifically a perfect procedure where nothing goes wrong. They addressed perfectionist thinking as a double-edged sword - while striving for perfection is admirable, it can lead to fear, overwork, and burnout. The presenter recommended shifting perspective from focusing on the gap between achievement and perfection to celebrating the best effort given with available knowledge and resources. The prolonged stress cycle was discussed as a significant issue for surgeons, where continuous stress without recovery leads to cognitive impairment, decreased empathy, irritability, anxiety, depression, and potentially self-harm. The presenter offered strategies to interrupt this cycle, including deep breathing, music, exercise, mindset work, and community support. For managing complications during surgery, the presenter advised checking one's pulse, taking deep breaths, stepping back to think, asking for help, and considering the next best step. They emphasized the importance of clear communication with partners about expectations when asking for help. After a complication, the presenter stressed the importance of naming emotions, practicing self-compassion, and using shame resilience strategies: reaching out to trusted sources, talking kindly to oneself, and owning the story to control the narrative. They highlighted that patients primarily want to know what happened, that the surgeon did their best, that they won't be abandoned, and that learning occurred from the experience. The presenter also discussed peer review processes, advising surgeons to control the narrative in medical charts, respond non-defensively to inquiries, and seek legal counsel if necessary. They emphasized the importance of measuring outcomes and knowing one's numbers to build confidence. The session concluded with advice on debriefing with teams and communicating with patients' families after complications, emphasizing the need to address emotional concerns before providing technical details. Chapters Introduction to Complications in Surgery 00:00:00 The presenter welcomed attendees to day three of launch week, focusing on complications in surgery. They acknowledged that while complications may seem like a heavy topic, it's important because all surgeons will experience them. The presenter introduced themselves as a surgeon, author, podcast host, and certified coach, emphasizing that complications are "near and dear to their heart." They outlined the main topics to be covered: what a complication is, perfectionist thinking, asking for help, the prolonged stress cycle, self-compassion, managing negative emotions, shame resilience, confidence and self-confidence, and peer review assessment. Understanding Complications and Perfectionist Thinking 00:01:46 The presenter began by addressing two common statements about surgical complications: "The only surgeon who doesn't have complications is the one who doesn't operate" and "Every surgeon carries within himself a small cemetery where from time to time he goes to pray." They defined a complication as a failure to achieve a stated outcome - specifically, a perfect procedure. The presenter discussed perfectionist thinking as a double-edged sword, explaining that while striving for perfection seems admirable, it can lead to fear, overwork, and burnout. They recommended shifting perspective from focusing on the gap between achievement and perfection (e.g., achieving 95% vs. 100%) to celebrating the best effort given with available knowledge and resources. The Prolonged Stress Cycle 00:07:17 The presenter explained how surgeons often experience prolonged stress cycles without recovery, especially when dealing with complications, hostile work environments, or difficult patients. They emphasized that surgical jobs are inherently difficult, stating "Our jobs are hard. Not everyone can do it." When stress continues without relief, it can lead to rumination, hypervigilance, isolation, impaired cognitive function, decreased empathy, irritability, anxiety, depression, and potentially self-harm. The presenter recommended strategies to interrupt this cycle, including deep breathing (especially exhaling), music, exercise, mindset work through neuroplasticity, and community support. Managing Complications During Surgery 00:11:25 For handling complications during surgery, the presenter advised: checking one's pulse first, taking deep breaths to interrupt the stress cycle, stepping back to think about what you know, asking for help, and considering the next best step. They used the analogy of viewing a maze from above versus being inside it to illustrate the importance of perspective. The presenter emphasized that how a surgeon responds during a complication influences everyone in the operating room, as they are all experiencing stress and looking to the surgeon for leadership. Asking for Help and Managing Expectations 00:13:51 The presenter discussed the importance of clear communication when asking for help, emphasizing understanding both your expectations and your partner's expectations. They shared examples of misunderstandings, such as a junior surgeon expecting a senior partner to scrub in during a complication while the senior partner was hesitant to appear to be taking over. The presenter advised explicitly stating what you need: "If you're the person in the operation and you want them to scrub in, just say, 'Hey, I really need you, can you scrub in?'" They also addressed "want mismatches" where partners have different expectations and recommended finding alternative sources of help if necessary. After the Complication: Managing Emotions 00:18:51 The presenter emphasized the importance of naming emotions after a complication occurs, describing it as learning a new language of emotional intelligence. They discussed "emotional alchemy" - the ability to transform one emotion into another, particularly distinguishing between guilt ("I feel bad that this event happened") and shame ("I feel bad because there's something wrong with me"). The presenter introduced Brené Brown's shame resilience framework: reaching out to trusted sources, talking kindly to oneself (self-compassion), and owning the story to control the ending. They explained self-compassion as "feeling a negative emotion and wrapping it up in love and respect for yourself." Communicating with Patients After Complications 00:24:51 The presenter shared insights about what patients want after complications: to know what happened while they were asleep, to know the surgeon did their best, to feel they won't be abandoned, and to know the surgeon learned from the experience. They emphasized the importance of giving complications purpose and using them as learning opportunities. The presenter advised being present with patients, acknowledging the reality of what happened, and providing certainty and stability during a confusing time. Peer Review and Professional Consequences 00:27:12 The presenter discussed peer review processes, acknowledging that surgeons have reason to be concerned but emphasizing that the goal should be quality improvement and patient safety. They advised controlling the narrative in medical charts by clearly documenting decision-making processes. The presenter outlined possible peer review outcomes: no action (sometimes even congratulations for handling difficult situations well), education/questioning, remediation requirements, or more serious consequences like privilege restrictions or National Data Bank reporting. They advised not signing anything without careful consideration and possibly consulting a lawyer if serious concerns arise. Building Confidence Despite Complications 00:33:48 The presenter distinguished between confidence ("I know I can do it because I've already done it") and self-confidence (the ability to take chances, stretch oneself, and manage failure). They recommended breaking down complex procedures into components, recognizing that surgeons typically know 95% of what they need to do, with only 5% requiring special focus. The presenter emphasized the importance of measuring outcomes and knowing one's numbers (complication rates, case volumes, etc.) to build confidence and counter drama with facts: "Information is the best solution when you have drama. Math always settles down drama." Debriefing with Teams and Families 00:41:54 In response to audience questions, the presenter discussed the importance of debriefing with both teams and patients' families after complications. For families, they advised leading with emotional reassurance before providing technical details: "First, I know things took a little longer, but everything is okay." For team debriefs, they recommended acknowledging everyone's efforts, discussing what went well and what could have gone better, and identifying next steps. The presenter also endorsed proactively reporting complications to administrators rather than waiting to be discovered: "Don't give into that kind of suffering... You're going to decrease the amount of suffering that you're going to have by doing that." Action Items The presenter recommended shifting perspective from focusing on the gap between achievement and perfection to celebrating the best effort given with available knowledge and resources. 00:05:54 The presenter advised interrupting the stress cycle through deep breathing (especially exhaling), music, exercise, mindset work, and community support. 00:09:51 The presenter suggested discussing expectations with partners before complications occur to establish when and how to call for help. 00:14:47 The presenter recommended explicitly stating needs when asking for help: "If you're the person in the operation and you want them to scrub in, just say, 'Hey, I really need you, can you scrub in?'" 00:15:59 The presenter advised practicing shame resilience by reaching out to trusted sources, talking kindly to oneself, and owning the story to control the ending. 00:21:54 The presenter suggested controlling the narrative in medical charts by clearly documenting decision-making processes. 00:28:01 The presenter recommended not signing anything without careful consideration and possibly consulting a lawyer if serious concerns arise during peer review. 00:32:14 The presenter advised measuring personal outcomes and knowing one's numbers (complication rates, case volumes, etc.) to build confidence. 00:36:37 The presenter suggested debriefing with teams after complications using a simple assessment: three things that went well, three things that could have gone better, and next steps. 00:45:24 The presenter recommended proactively reporting complications to administrators rather than waiting to be discovered. 00:48:38
In this episode of the Child Anxiety FAQ Podcast, we've got a listener's question about handling backsliding in anxious children. I emphasize that backsliding is a natural part of managing anxiety, particularly during times of increased stress, such as the end of summer and the beginning of the school year. I explain that children with anxious brains are more prone to see negativity and potential disaster, and learning to manage anxiety is an ongoing process. I discuss various scenarios that may trigger backsliding and advise parents to reframe it as an opportunity to reinforce coping skills rather than viewing it as a regression. I also highlight the importance of supporting children through these periods and being kind to both the child and oneself. I encourage listeners to consider the context of their child's backsliding and offers guidance on how to navigate these challenging times.00:00 Introduction to the Child Anxiety FAQ Podcast00:29 Understanding Backsliding in Anxious Children04:46 Reframing Backsliding as Progress05:28 Common Triggers for Backsliding06:56 Managing Expectations and Support08:45 Handling Stressful Situations and Behaviors10:32 Consistency and Flexibility in Parenting12:28 Conclusion and How to Submit Questions

Why did you start your podcast? Was it for money, passion, or both? Today, we play a TikTok clip from the Okay Sister Pod that lays out three honest tips for launching a show. Their takes sparked a lively debate. Some agreed that podcasting shouldn't begin with money as the goal, while others argued that it is possible to earn if you approach it with a clear plan and treat it like a business. We also discuss the reality of low early downloads, why consistency matters more than a weekly schedule, and how to reframe your analytics. To close out the week, we keep our Friday tradition alive by sharing and celebrating wins from our community.Episode Highlights: [03:21] TikTok Clip: Okay Sister Pod Launch Tips[06:00] Don't Do It for the Money Debate[09:00] Business Plans, Sponsorships, and Monetization[13:00] Why Podcasting Is Harder Than It Looks[26:00] Slow Growth and Managing Expectations[36:00] Consistency and Communication [41:00] Friday WinsLinks & Resources: Join The Empowered Podcasting Facebook Group:www.facebook.com/groups/empoweredpodcastingGet Your Tickets for The Empowered Podcasting Conference:www.empoweredpodcasting.comClip From Okay Sister Pod:www.tiktok.com/@okaysisterpod/video/7362940797903310122It's Amanda Yoa:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/its-amanda-yoa/id1646444562ReThinking Podcasting by Matt Bliss:https://rethinkingpodcasting.com/episode/alive-internet-theory-and-actually-seeing-your-listenersLate Bloomer Living by Yvonne Marchese:https://www.latebloomerliving.com/Remember to rate, follow, share, and review our podcast. There is no guarantee on race day. Anything can happen, no matter how perfect or imperfect your build was. In fact, one of our favorite race mantras is: "Show up and see what you've got," which acknowledges the fact that the only thing you can do on race day is your best. We all have race day energy, nerves, and—most of all—expectations. Sometimes we might be afraid to voice our goals out loud, for fear we will not meet them or they will weigh us down. In this episode, we dig into the art of managing and embracing expectations so they become a source of strength, not stress. We dive into how to make realistic race goals and how to change them on the fly. We talk about your athlete personality might be a part of the way you react to the lead up to a race or a disappointing performance. There is a lot to unpack in this one!

Ninety percent of people's problems in their lives and business are that they don't manage expectations properly. I've been married 4 times, divorced 3. A long time ago, when I met Amy, we sat down and had a conversation. I've been with her about 11 years and once we decided we were going to be getting serious, we sat down and had a conversation. Pre-nup. No matter what you think, everything begins and ends with agreements. When we discussed our marriage, we outlined what the consequences would be if: Either of us cheated Filed for Divorce Didn't stay in shape The list goes on. The crazy thing is at the time, I was making about 7 figures and she was making 6. We still have separate bank accounts to this day, but we didn't want our marriage to be anything but successful. Do we argue? Yes. Do we have disagreements? Yes, just like every other couple. Imagine if everyone decided to make agreements like this? What would the world be like? No matter what you think or believe, there is a always as way to manage expectations better. Lean in and take notes. This one is going to be a game-changer for how you make agreements moving forward in life.
