Show Notes: About the Texas Craft Brewers Guild: The Texas Craft Brewers Guild is a Board of Directors led organization that represents the interests of Texas craft brewers. The members of the board hail from craft breweries in all the major metropolitan regions of the state, as well as from different brewery types and sizes. Large craft breweries, small self-distributed craft breweries and brewpubs each have one or more advocates on the board, looking out for their interests.Formed in 2009 by a band of brewers, today, the Guild has over 300 brewery members throughout the state, including operating breweries, as well as those that are in the advanced planning stages. The Guild also welcomes Allied Trade members – our name for the myriad suppliers and service organizations in the craft beer industry that help make breweries run. If you've ever had a beer in Austin, Texas, chances are you've come across Hops & Grain. Josh Hare launched Hops & Grain back in 2011. He was an endurance athlete who loved beer, specifically New Belgium's Sunshine Wheat and the 5 Barrel Pale Ale from Odell, and at the time the craft beer industry was in growth mode, particularly in Texas. But, while most breweries start with kegs and grow their brand through a presence in bars and restaurants, Hops & Grain did the opposite, diving headfirst into cans. “We wanted to be the beer that was on your shopping list, and we succeeded in that in a lot of ways,” Josh says. “We were really focused on the brand being identifiable and recognizable but also welcoming. It wasn't loud and splashy. There was a story around each brand.” The brand continued to grow and to cement its place as a leader in the craft beer industry — until the pandemic hit in early 2020. Josh talks candidly about the past two years (“It was brutal,” he says) and what has happened to Hops & Grain as a result. And although he has faced challenges unlike any he ever expected, Josh's story does have a happy ending. “We've got a long way to go, but all signs are pointing to positive,” he says. In this episode, Josh recounts his journey with Hops & Grain and digs into how the past two years impacted not just his business but his perspective on the brewing industry as a whole. He also offers up advice for other brewers on how to run a successful, sustainable business that can stand the test of time. Show Notes: The departure blog post: In this episode, Josh talks about how he struggled to hit publish on the blog post that would announce the closure of Hops & Grain. Read the post in full here. Duke is joined by Cazzer and friend of the show, Jake Barber. The sporty pizza pod club discuss WINS and the development of sexy Garner-ball.Caz is seriously impressed with Dave Tutonda and Jake has plenty of superlatives for Josh Hare, who have both looked very good on their respective wings. We are all pleasantly surprised by Daly's first goal for the club and we dissect the whole of the incisive move that came moments after Jaakkola was picking the ball out of his net. A special mention for Josh Grant with his pass out to Hare, but did he mean it though? There's not much sympathy for Michael Appleton's post-match saltiness, though Duke thinks Ehmer should have conceded a penalty in the first half, but does he care? Does he heck?!We also look out our latest transfer news with youngsters Mehew, Tomlinson and Phillips being told they can go out on loan, with Tomlinson and Phillips securing moves to Bath City and Chippenham Town respectively. We also see Kyle Bennett move to Grimsby until the end of the season - however there are question marks over the clubs handling of the situation. We also saw two incomings, both on a permanent basis. Ben Liddle joining from Middlesbrough and then just before we recorded on Tuesday, we got the announcement that Ali Koiki, a LWB, was going to join us. This posed the question, will we see some more players move on? The team also give us their predictions for the upcoming match against Burton (H). Finally a shout out to our sponsor Kahuna flooring, who supply and fit all types of flooring for your home or workplace. Today’s guest was a must-see during our time in Austin, Texas. Josh Hare is the lone founder of Hops and Grain Brewing. He’s an avid cyclist, and a massive Lager advocate. He’s long been one of those Twitter handles that I was attracted to—his rational, skeptical voice stands out within an industry that can sometimes be an irrational, cynical place. He’s a breath of fresh air. And back in 2017, he became a member of our subscriber community, The Fervent Few. In fact, he was the very first pro-tier subscriber we ever got, and he’s been there ever since. Another thing that makes Josh interesting—particularly at a time when most craft breweries are starting with small teams, or at least co-founders with complementary skill-sets—is that he took the plunge himself. That changes a lot of the dynamics related to the kind of team he needed to build, as well as the responsibilities that fall on him in a small, growing brewery. We’re going to spend a good deal of time digging into the implications of that emotionally, psychologically, physically, and strategically. We’re also going to talk about the state of Austin beer. Josh’s next move has him looking at San Marcos for a second location as he contemplates the meaning behind, and the opportunity for, community-building in the area. And finally, we get into his wild program. As Texas laws have recently changed to allow beer to go, the opportunity for small-batch, specialty releases is a new frontier for a brewery like Hops and Grain. And the things in store there are delicious. This is Josh Hare of Hops and Grain Brewing. Listen in.
On this week's GasCast, Max and Mets are joined by James Piercy from the Bristol Post. They start with some in depth talk about the takeover story, which the Post broke a few weeks ago, and discuss when Rovers fans can expect to hear more news. There's lot of talk about the new 3-5-2 formation which has seen Rovers pick up several impressive home wins and gained more support for manager Graham Coughlan. The talismanic Josh Hare, calming influence of Tony Craig, and scapegoat turned superstar Ed Upson are the main points of discussion in this weeks team review. The lads also talk about Matty Taylor's greatly anticipated return to the Memorial Stadium, and Mets doesn't hold back on his thoughts on the Snake. The player in focus this week is Tom Nichols, and Max is fully back on the bandwagon.Support the show (https://patreon.com/gascast)
In today's episode, I sit down with Josh Hare - founder of the award winning Hops & Grain Brewing in Austin, TX. We talk about how Josh went from working at Rogue Running to opening his popular brewery, overcoming the draconian beer laws in Texas, the importance of sustainability within the company, and the unveiling of their new San Marcos brewpub, now open just off The Square.
What the hell is going in Maryland and Texas? You may have caught a bunch of coverage of these two states on GBH over the past year. Their state politicians are creating—depending on who you ask—all sorts of good, bad, and ugly situations for their respective craft beer industries. In Maryland, infighting about how beer is sold and regulated has led to the legislature’s attempts to strip oversight from comptroller Peter Franchot, who has led efforts to boost the state's craft-beer economy and earned enemies along the way. In Texas, it's a similar story, where wholesalers and lobbyists have long thumbed their noses at small beer producers. Despite a recent breakthrough that could finally allow breweries to sell beer to-go from their taprooms, there are still shenanigans to work through as some wholesalers clap back. For this episode of the Good Beer Hunting Sightlines podcast, we're checking in on the latest from these two states. First, with Liz Murphy, a reporter and columnist who writes about Maryland beer for the Annapolis Capital Gazette, then with Josh Hare, founder and president of Austin's Hops & Grain Brewing, as well as board chairman of the Texas Craft Brewers Guild. Both will offer some insight into the quirky bitterness and political games at play. What the hell is going on? Listen in. [Editor’s note: the Maryland portion of this podcast begins at 1:28, and the Texas portion begins at 30:50.]

You would never suspect that most beer fanatics also have an adept appreciation of physical health, but Hops and Grain's Josh Hare is an amazing amalgam of health and business savvy. An Abilene fence builder in his youth, Josh understood fermentation as not just a scientific equation, but a basic means of making alcohol for the weekends. With a brief stint as a biology teacher, and a deflated sense of empowerment brought upon by antiquated Texas education curriculums, Josh headed to the health capital of America: Boulder, Colorado. After biking, swimming, and selling running accessories, Josh found a great opportunity in Austin and ultimately understood that he had to make beer for the people that needed it, health conscious Austinites. We sip bourbon and chat sex education.
Brooklyn Brewery founder Steve Hindy sits down in Austin with a powerhouse panel featuring some folks at the forefront of the Texas beer scene: Michael Graham, co-founder of Austin Beerworks; Josh Hare, founder of Hops & Grain; and Brad Farbstein, owner of Real Ale Brewing Company. Also joining the panel is John Holl, editor of All About Beer.
