Could working with animals be the key to helping children with ADHD regulate their emotions and build confidence? In this episode of The Soaring Child, host Dana Kay explores the transformative world of equine-assisted therapy. She's joined by Caz Pringle-Bowden, a yoga facilitator, counselor, and equine therapy expert who has worked with hundreds of neurodivergent children. Caz shares how horses offer a unique form of emotional and nervous system regulation, helping children develop focus, self-awareness, and trust in ways that traditional therapies often cannot. Beyond the horse paddock, Caz also teaches yoga and boxing to youth in juvenile detention and designs neurodiversity training for educators. As a neurodivergent woman herself, she brings a deeply personal perspective to her work. In this conversation, she explains why horses have a profound impact on children with ADHD, how parents can incorporate similar strategies at home, and why rethinking the narrative around ADHD is essential for supporting neurodivergent kids. "They can hear a heartbeat from up to 10 meters away. So, heart rate variability—if we are excited or nervous, they're going to hear that." "You cannot lie to a horse." "By working with a horse, we're actually working with new stories, new stories of hope, resilience, and capacity to counteract those negative stories that that child might have heard." "When someone is regulated and they're okay, the horse gives trust, and when a horse gives trust, it is real—very, very real." "It's just 10% of the time that the teachers see it, and they judge me for it. And they only know that 10% of me. They know 10%. They don't know the other 90. They're not even interested." Hello.Come here.A little closer.Closer.Don't be afraid.There. That's it.I'm going to tell you a story.A story about an author called C.J. Tudor.Who many years ago, waaay way back in season 1, episode 13, joined the Failing Writers Podcast for a harmless little natter.Back when they were just podcasting children, playing down in the basement of obscurity.Meanwhile, however, C.J. was on the way up. Climbing the stairs. Up, up she rose. Up to the very attic of literary accomplishment. And there she's lived ever since. But wait. What's that? There's something up there with her.Something hiding in the shadows.Something shapeless and malevolent. Watching. Waiting. What could it be?What could haunt such a successful writer, with its grim, brooding presence?Let's find out, shall we? As we catch up with C.J. Tudor again, 4 years on.You can buy Caz's books here:(Yooooou'll be sorry if you dooooon't)https://www.penguin.co.uk/authors/131110/c-j-tudor Hosted on Acast. This week's episode of then & now is part of a series co-sponsored by the L.A. History Collaborative, in which we examine the effects of the devastating Los Angeles Wildfires in early 2025. Dr. Daisy Ocampo Diaz joins LCHP Assistant Director Dr. Rose Campbell to discuss the Fowler Museum's exhibition Fire Kinship: Southern California Native Ecology and Art, one of the exhibitions associated with the Pacific Standard Time (PST) Art Initiative. The L.A. Wildfires highlighted the urgent need for effective fire management and risk mitigation strategies in the era of climate change. Rarely featured in such discussions, however, are the traditional landscape management methods, such as controlled burns, practiced by many Indigenous communities in North America before European colonization. As head curator of the Fire Kinship exhibition, Daisy underscores the vital role of fire as a regenerative force and explains how a legacy of colonial fire suppression tactics has exacerbated the effects of wildfires in the absence of sustainable landscape management practices. With more frequent and devastating natural disasters intensified by climate change, Daisy asserts that the best way forward is the integration of Indigenous knowledge into large-scale landscape management practices. The Fire Kinship exhibition is on display at the Fowler Museum at UCLA through July 13, 2025. Read more about the exhibition here. Admission to the Fowler Museum is always free!Dr. Daisy Ocampo (Caxcan, or Caz' Ahmo, Indigenous Nation of Zacatecas, Mexico) earned her PhD in History from the University of California, Riverside in 2019. Her research in Native and Public History informs her work with museum exhibits, historical preservation projects, and community-based archives. She is the author of Where We Belong: Chemehuevi and Caxcan Preservation of Sacred Mountains (The University of Arizona Press, 2023) and is currently working on two major projects: “Pá'čapa: A Mt. Rubidoux Story,” a short documentary film which she co-produced, and “Fire Kinship,” an exhibit she curated at the UCLA Fowler Museum sponsored by Getty.Further ReadingNative American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA)PST ART

Caitlin Davies performs Sarah Beth Durst's enchanting fantasy story about a reclusive librarian finding her way home. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Emily Connelly discuss the fun of listening to this magical audiobook. Academic librarian Kiela has lived in the Great Library of Alyssium for years, caring for the Empire's spellbooks with only a sentient spider plant named Caz for company. When the fires of the Revolution reach the library, they escape by sea to her secluded childhood home with a few crates of precious books. Could she use their magical knowledge to aid the struggling islanders without risking her safety? And why are they all so friendly?? Davies uses a prim yet empathetic narration that suits the introverted librarian and brings the colorful cast of characters to life for listeners. Read our review of the audiobook at our website. Twenty historic barns across the Lake District are enjoying some long overdue tender loving care, thanks to £3.2 million pounds worth of funding from DEFRA and other sources. The oldest of these barns dates back to the 15th century. Some are traditional cruck barns with ancient timber frames and others are remote stone shelters for sheep from the 18th century. As Caz Graham discovers, they're part of the UK's rural cultural heritage and tell the story of farming over the centuries. For modern-day farmers however, these buildings can be a real headache: they are often unfit for modern farming practices and hugely expensive to restore or maintain because of building protections like listings, or because they're in a National Park.Caz joins farmers, builders, architect Mike Darwell and Rose Lord, the historic buildings officer at the Lake District National Park Authority to hear how these traditional buildings are getting a new lease of life.Produced and presented by Caz Graham.

On June 18th 2024, British game developer The Chinese Room released a horror game that hoped to combine elements of John Carpenter's "The Thing" with motifs found in movies like "Midsommar", and The Lighthouse. That's a pretty bold and ambitious plan to say the least! That game was Still Wakes the Deep. Described as a first person psychological horror game, Still Wakes the Deep sees the player take on the role of Caz McCleary an electrician aboard the Beira D oil rig in the North Sea in the year 1975. Haunted by decisions in his past, including a more recent violent altercation, and the loss of trust from his wife and partner Suze, Caz must navigate a crumbling infrastructure aboard the oil rig, a slew of electrical issues, and the cosmic horrors of the unknown on his journey back to his home and family. In a game filled with a cast of wonderfully realized characters, superb voice acting, and heavy themes, it is perhaps the lack of real mechanical depth in the game that leaves the most room to be desired. This is a game that asks many intriguing questions about psychology, grief, and body horror, it's just a shame that the ways it gives you in gameplay to explore those themes is surface level. All in all though, Josh and Colin had a wonderful time playing this game. It doesn't overstay its welcome, and respects your time. If you're looking for a game to play during the upcoming Spooky season that can accompany a longer game, this may be the one for you! Coming up next month on Surviving the Horror, Colin and Josh will be sinking their teeth into the newly released Silent Hill 2 Remake. We hope you'll join us then, and thank you for listening!
