When I'm doing prep for the interviews you hear on this podcast, I try to look across digital footprints for insights that help me gauge a person, their personality, and the kinds of questions I should ask. It's all based on instinct and hope that my own impression from a distance gives me enough to offer you a meaningful conversation that introduces someone new or helps you gain a deeper appreciation for someone who's familiar. Sometimes, the idea of a person I'm researching matches exactly who they are in our conversation, and that's the case with Jesse Valenciana. As you'll hear right away, the trail of breadcrumbs he leaves on social media and with his professional connections make it clear he cares deeply for his loved ones and his heritage. Jesse most recently worked as director of marketing for Kentucky's Against the Grain Brewery—his time there ended after we recorded this podcast as part of budget cuts at the brewery. So, if you hear us talking about Against the Grain in the present tense in this conversation, that's why. Jesse says it's onward and upward for him and his career, however, which also includes a varied skill set: he's also a food and beverage journalist, author, cook, and a person who seems to always consider how his past connects to his present in these roles. In this conversation, you'll learn about all this, from his childhood visiting family in Mexico to how those roots shaped his personality and relationships, including the way his history and culture helps him view America's craft beer industry. After years of working in beer, Jesse shares the way he's been shaped by his own passions, microaggressions from others, and why it matters to the way he does his job now and in the future.

No half stars, we commit and stand by the full level we award. 5-Star: We love it so much, we rave about it to anyone who will listen, and actively hand them out to friends and family to try! 4-Star: We really like it, will proactively get more, and will keep some on hand to enjoy at our next social gathering. 3-Star: It's good, we like it, and equate it to our standard weekend selection. We won't go out of our way to acquire more, but will certainly have it again should the situation arise. 2-Star: It's not great. We will finish this can, but will part ways after, and will likely not meet again in the future. 1-Star: It's terrible. We won't be finishing the can, and will need another, better can, to wash the awful taste out of our mouths. 0-Star: It's so bad, it caused a visceral reaction that made us physically reject it's contents. Jason Brauner, the founder of Buzzard's Roost Sippin' Whiskeys, talks with Bourbon expert Tom Fischer about Buzzard's Roost Whiskey and Against the Grain Brewery Collaboration. Both based in Louisville, Kentucky, they have united for this project using Indenpdent Stave Company barrels. Sourcing Jaason's favorite selections of Rye whiskey from MGP and transforming it through the magic of the barrel is what makes this whiskey so unique. For this release, both the Against the Grain's Roosted Chiquen Beer and Buzzard's Roost Roosted Chiquen Brewer's Toast Finished Rye Whiskey have seen the same type of barrel. This allows us to taste the impact of the barrel on both beverages. Jason and Tom also try the Buzzard's Roost Toasted Barrel, which Jason says will be a seasonal release. Play Episode Listen Later Jun 15, 2019 68:20

At this point in the American beer scene, a love for IPAs, Wheat Ales, Stouts, and Saisons comes from all over. Our friends and parents. Our neighbors and celebrities. When we learn that someone has an adoration for craft beer, there’s not a lot of surprise left to be had, except what kind of beer we can share as part of this fun bond. This spring, I had that debate—between a Wheat Ale and IPA—with the musician and rapper, Fish Scales of Nappy Roots. Scales, whose real name is Melvin Adams Jr., isn’t just accomplished in the world of music, but he and others in the Grammy-nominated group see beer as a next step in their creative journey. They’ve already made collaboration beers with Atlanta’s Monday Night Brewing and Louisville’s Against the Grain Brewery, and I sat down with Scales this spring in Boise, Idaho, where Nappy Roots was performing and releasing a new beer with the city’s Woodland Empire Ale Craft. In recent years, there have been a variety of musicians, groups, actors, and athletes who have gotten into the world of beer. Scales and Nappy Roots are among that growing number, and his appreciation for the history, process, and what he sees beer to be culturally is what’s propelling him toward this love while still performing about 100 times a year. As many conversations have circled around in beer lately, there is a component to this effort to bring craft beer to audiences that were long neglected. We talk about that, the cross-section of music and beer, and so much more, during the course of this conversation.  So, what’s the perspective on beer from one of the most successful musicians in America? This is Fish Scales, beer lover and rapper, of Nappy Roots. Listen in.

What's luck if you ain't from Kentucky? The founders of Louisville, Kentucky's Against the Grain Brewery got their start because they weren't satisfied with the way beer was being represented in their town.  After a disappointing visit to a local brewpub, whose brewhouse sat unused in a dark and dusty corner, they hunted down the owner and offered to buy the place.  Today, Against the Grain Brewery and Smokehouse is nestled in that spot at Louisville Slugger Field, home to baseball's minor league Louisville Bats. This week, co-owner Sam Cruz joins us to talk about their journey to opening the brewery, how beer names drive recipe creation, and how Japan and Europe are just small steps in their plan for world domination because "Everyone deserves Against the Grain beer." We're also joined by Fish Scales and Skinny Deville of Nappy Roots and Atlantucky Brewing.  If you're a regular listener of Beer Guys Radio you've likely heard us talk beer with the Nappy Roots crew before.  We discuss their collaboration with Against the Grain, Water-Melon Chiquen & Gritz, and how that collaboration is launching new beer adventures for them. Our featured beers this week were all about Against the Grain: Pome and Grabbit | Tart Wheat Ale with ginger and pomegranate London Balling | English-style Barleywine aged in Angel's Envy bourbon barrels (A Beer Guys favorite) Stave it for Later: Maple Bockin’ Pastries | Doppelbock with West Virginia maple syrup Kamen Knuddeln | Kentucky Common In the news this week we discuss a 'raid" on a Georgia homebrew club meeting, additional evidence of the world's oldest beer, and improved brewery laws in Illinois. Make sure to tune in next week as we talk with Athens, Georgia's Monk's Mead.

The first beer we had was Slamarillo from Powerhouse Brewing in Puyallup, Washington. Our second beer has probably the most amazing label in the world, an interesting Brown Ale from Against the Grain Brewery out of Louisville, Kentucky called Brown Note. Finally we try an extremely sour beer called Bug Zapper from Avery Brewing Company. Rounding out this episode is the fun game of #BucketOfDoom and this one gets interesting! Enjoy Brew Crew. The 35K even earned the distinction of being the milkiest milk stout we've ever tasted. For the Beerology recordings, after a brief intro, we speak to Tessa about 12 Gates, John from Buffalo Brewing Company, Devin of Big Ditch Brewing, Derek for Gordon Biersch, and Shawn representing Long Trail Brewing. They didn’t have the best living situation, so it pushed them to aggressively to save for a home and drastically cut spending. They didn’t have the easiest time of finding a home.   The first house they put a bid on majorly failed the inspection and they were looking at 10-20k worth of repairs. No bueno. They finally ended up finding a place they loved, but the price was a lot higher. After doing the math, they decided they could afford the house and used an FHA loan to pay for it.
