Austin is known for its tacos, but you probably don't know the stories behind the people who make our corn-or-flour-wrapped deliciousness, or what makes Austin's tacos stand out among the sea of tacos statewide. Host Nikki DaVaughn is joined by taco journalist Mando Rayo, whose latest season of “Tacos of Texas” is out now. Plus, Mando shares some of his favorite tacos in town, and encourages Austinites to venture out of the city center for the best tacos around, and to head particularly to Austin's Taco Mile (map here!). Host Nikki DaVaughn is joined today by Adam Powell, the executive director of the Austin History Center Association, who shares the stories behind some of Austin's namesakes, like the newspaper man who helped bring The University of Texas to Austin, the World War II vet-turned magician who made incredible clothing, the man who successfully challenged the so-called Hollywood blacklist, and the alderman who died in the fight to rename 19th Street after Martin Luther King, Jr. The Austin History Center has been undergoing renovations, and reopens this weekend with an event on Sunday, Sept. 7. That gasp you heard last Thursday evening? It was Austinites' surprise at the news that longtime U.S. Congressman Lloyd Doggett is retiring if Texas' new congressional district map is upheld in court. The new map combines Doggett's district with parts of that of relative newbie Rep. Greg Casar. And while there is already a legal challenge to the redistricting law, Casar has now announced he will be running for the District 37 seat. It looks like local Democrats are supportive of Doggett's retirement, but to find out more, host Nikki DaVaughn is joined by Forrest Wilder, senior writer for Texas Monthly; and Monique Alcala, a former executive director of the Texas Democratic Party based in Austin. It was the Texas Department of Transportation's construction of the Congress Avenue bridge in the 1980s that first attracted Mexican Freetail bats to Austin, in droves that caused Austinites to push for their extermination. And now, TxDOT is caring for the bats once again, building alternative spots for their roosts as it tears apart bridges over Interstate 35. So to find out how they're faring in this new living situation, along with what happened to Austin's bats during the summer rainstorms, executive producer Eva Ruth Moravec is joined by Austin Bat Refuge co-founders, Dianne Odegard and Lee McKenzie. Watching the California fires spread this year was scary — especially if you're the assistant chief of the wildfire division in the fifth most at-risk city for wildfires in the country. Carrie Stewart is back with host Nikki DaVaughn to talk about what the firefighters who were dispatched to Los Angeles learned about what Austin should do right now, and how the fall fire season is looking for Central Texas. Plus, the easy steps you can take to harden your home so it's less likely to catch on fire, if flames ever do get close, like: Join the hundreds of Austinites who've requested a structural ignition zone evaluation. After 31 years, McQueary has seen it all — he's sold skulls, settled family disputes, and handled the estates of some of Austin's most famous residents. The half-dozen blocks of Sixth Street downtown where Austinites celebrate their 21st birthdays and so much more sit within a historic district — but even so, changes are afoot. After 35 years, Austin officials are testing out reopening the street to vehicular traffic on the weekends, and have widened sidewalks and added barricades to protect pedestrians. And, while it might seem sudden, these changes have been in the works for years, well before the New Year's terrorist attack on New Orleans' Bourbon Street. To break down the past, present, and future of Dirty Old Sixth, host Nikki DaVaughn is joined by Hannah Rangel, the Downtown Austin Alliance's vice president of built environment; Bill Brice , the DAA's senior vice president of investor relations, and Mike DeBonville, Owner/Operator of Marlow Bar. This Black History Month, we challenge you to learn about Austin's deep and complicated racial history. From politicians to businesspeople, musicians, artists, chefs, and more, African-American Austinites have left their imprint on this city in many different ways, and the George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural and Genealogy Center is full of exhibits and programming to help you learn. Host Nikki DaVaughn speaks to the Carver's events coordinator, Deelah Muhyee, about why it's important for Austinites to connect to their roots, and keep the past alive. Want some more Austin news? Bastrop-based Boring Company, owned by Elon Musk, has tunneled 40 feet below Las Vegas, causing all kinds of problems in the name of creating a new mode of transportation. Host Nikki DaVaughn interviews Dayvid Figler, co-host of City Cast Las Vegas, who recently co-reported a story exposing the tunnel's troubles in Nevada. There, Boring Company privately built the so-called Tesla Tunnel, avoiding some regulations and scrutiny that publicly-funded operations would have required. Already, Boring has been fined for environmental impacts here in Texas, but could a tunnel be in Austin's future? Figler gives Austinites advice on what to pay attention to, and spills that the best part about the tunnel are the lights.
