The James Beard Restaurant and Chef Award Nominees were just named, and to the surprise of some, Austin's only mention was for Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service, for Arjav Ezekiel, at Birdies. None of the nominees for Best Chef Texas are Austin chefs. So, what does that say about our local restaurateurs? What impact do these awards have on restaurants and their financial sustainability? Host Nikki DaVaughn is joined by the owner and head chef of El Naranjo, Iliana de la Vega, who was named Best Chef Texas in 2022 and a semifinalist twice before that. Plus, de la Vega shares how she changed the way Austinites make tortillas, the Austin restaurant she'd bring back from the dead, and the dish that makes her customers cry (happy tears). Austin is no stranger to autonomous vehicles — a decade ago, this is where the first fully autonomous car ride took place, and then-Mayor Steve Adler declared Austin the “Kitty Hawk of driverless cars.” Late last year, Waymo rolled out service for Austinites on an insider waiting list, and our guest, Dan Weinstock, got approved to ride. Since then, he's racked up 60 rides in the self-driving cars, and has the stories to prove it. Recently, the company partnered with Uber, and Uber customers can now opt-in to get picked up by a robot car. Would you take one? Host Nikki DaVaughn isn't so sure. The half-dozen blocks of Sixth Street downtown where Austinites celebrate their 21st birthdays and so much more sit within a historic district — but even so, changes are afoot. After 35 years, Austin officials are testing out reopening the street to vehicular traffic on the weekends, and have widened sidewalks and added barricades to protect pedestrians. And, while it might seem sudden, these changes have been in the works for years, well before the New Year's terrorist attack on New Orleans' Bourbon Street. To break down the past, present, and future of Dirty Old Sixth, host Nikki DaVaughn is joined by Hannah Rangel, the Downtown Austin Alliance's vice president of built environment; Bill Brice , the DAA's senior vice president of investor relations, and Mike DeBonville, Owner/Operator of Marlow Bar. Host Nikki DaVaughn interviews Dayvid Figler, co-host of City Cast Las Vegas, who recently co-reported a story exposing the tunnel's troubles in Nevada. There, Boring Company privately built the so-called Tesla Tunnel, avoiding some regulations and scrutiny that publicly-funded operations would have required. Already, Boring has been fined for environmental impacts here in Texas, but could a tunnel be in Austin's future? Figler gives Austinites advice on what to pay attention to, and spills that the best part about the tunnel are the lights. Fall means flu season, and as Austinites make plans to roll up our sleeves and get the flu vaccine, don't forget to get the latest COVID vaccine, too. The latest FDA-approved mixture fights a new Omicron strain of COVID that spread through Austin this summer and is recommended for anyone over the age of 6. Last month, host Nikki DaVaughn spoke to Dr. Desmar Walkes, Austin Public Health's medical director and health authority, about the latest strain, as well as other vaccines Austinites shouldn't skip. And in recent years, especially, an influx of new Austinites has highlighted one growing pain: Housing. But must we tear down the old to make way for the new? What does a city lose when its architectural history is demolished? Preservation Austin's Meghan King joins host Nikki DaVaughn to discuss. And make sure you mark your calendars to participate in their Legacy Business Month festivities in October.
