In this episode, I sit down with Walt Maciborski—CBS Austin anchor, host of “Tech This Out,” and the newly named Texas Television Broadcaster of the Year—for a candid conversation about the power of storytelling, curiosity, and authenticity in journalism.Walt's journey is anything but ordinary. From being cut from his high school baseball team and facing his family's bankruptcy, to discovering his passion for storytelling, Walt shares how early setbacks fueled his drive to chase big dreams. For him, it's the human connection, lived experience, and authentic voice that make storytelling matter. His show, “Tech This Out,” shines a light on Austin's tech innovators and entrepreneurs, reminding us that every journey is worth sharing.Walt's advice for aspiring journalists? The half-dozen blocks of Sixth Street downtown where Austinites celebrate their 21st birthdays and so much more sit within a historic district — but even so, changes are afoot. After 35 years, Austin officials are testing out reopening the street to vehicular traffic on the weekends, and have widened sidewalks and added barricades to protect pedestrians. And, while it might seem sudden, these changes have been in the works for years, well before the New Year's terrorist attack on New Orleans' Bourbon Street. To break down the past, present, and future of Dirty Old Sixth, host Nikki DaVaughn is joined by Hannah Rangel, the Downtown Austin Alliance's vice president of built environment; Bill Brice , the DAA's senior vice president of investor relations, and Mike DeBonville, Owner/Operator of Marlow Bar. Already, Boring has been fined for environmental impacts here in Texas, but could a tunnel be in Austin's future? Host Nikki DaVaughn is joined by Natalia Contreras, a reporter with Votebeat, to break down the myths, lies, and truths about the process of registering to vote and casting a ballot in Texas. This summer, while one group urged its members to challenge the voter registration of thousands of Austinites, state leadership announced that voters were culled from the rolls. But that was regular voter roll maintenance, and the challenges weren't legit. So, is voter suppression really a thing in Texas? Should we worry that our votes won't count at the polls in November? In our third “Mayoral Mondays” episode, host Nikki DaVaughn interviews Austin mayoral candidate Carmen Llanes Pulido. She's a native Austinite, and a community organizer who grew up in the activist movement alongside her father, and joins City Cast Austin to tell Austinites why she deserves their vote for mayor. We've already interviewed candidates Jeffery Bowen and Doug Greco, and we'll publish interviews with the remaining candidates in the next few weeks.
