Born in Nagano, Japan, Susumu Kamijo has lived and worked in New York for more than 20 years. Influenced by Francis Bacon and Willem de Kooning, his paintings of poodles quickly attracted significant attention. In his work, the poodle becomes a clever device, a motif reminding us that Kamijo's subject is first and foremost painting itself. In a playfully meditative style, his work continues to develop in a way that surprises, provokes, and transforms our ways of seeing. In this episode, Susumu talks about Japanese writer Sayaka Murata, one of contemporary Japanese literature's most striking prose stylists. In The Love of Art podcast, artists are invited to speak about other artists that fascinate them (musicians, writers, filmmakers, actors, designers…) in a very personal way. The Love of Art (L'Amour de l'Art) is a podcast by Perrotin The episode with Susumu Kamijo was recorded on March 17, 2023 at Perrotin gallery, Paris Interview conducted by: Vanessa Clairet Production and sound design: Seb Lascoux Language: English Graphic design: Perrotin Music: CDM Music

Susumu Kamijo is a painter who lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He currently has a solo show on view in Tokyo, Japan at Maki Gallery titled Beyond The Hills, and is also in a group show at Venus over Manhattan in NYC. We discuss his moving to the US at age 16, why talking to writers is better than painters, how poodles entered the work and how they have changed, mixing opposites, the poodle as an entranceway to his world, the intensity of De Kooning, feeling like your work is dorky, the absurdity of choosing to paint poodles, feeling the capacity to encompass the fucked up part of you, performing comedy in the past as a challenge, painting as an expression of the subconscious, letting unexpected things happen, finding joy in the studio, using meditation but trying not to be cringe about it, the earlier years, the importance of friends in his development, having faith that he would be able to make it as an artist, finding inspiration in other peoples death, his mentor relationship with Denzil Hurley, and a story about Susumu's MFA experience.Susumu Kamijo - Beyond The Hills, Maki Galleryhttps://www.makigallery.com/exhibitions_en/4910/https://www.jackhanley.com/artists/susumu-kamijoAkira Kurosawa - Dreamshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcXk_PLrHp8In Memoriam – Denzil Hurleyhttps://art.washington.edu/news/2021/07/01/memoriam-denzil-hurley

This week we reviewed the first 3 episodes of A Certain Magical Index. Synopsis: Kamijo is a student in Academy City, where people use science to develop supernatural abilities. The guy’s got a lot of heart – luckily for a young nun named Index. She’s on the run from a sorcery society that covets the astonishing 103,000 volumes of magical knowledge stored in her memory. When Index stumbles into Kamijo’s life, she find a faithful friend and protector, and while Kamijo’s easily the weakest kid in Academy City, he’s got something else going for him: the Imagine Breaker, an unexplainable power stored in his right hand that negates the powers of others. Kamijo's melodic voice always brings much passion to the lyrics of love found and lost he sings.Personally i found their 2000 release of Chantons L'amour ~ A Letter from Lillie probably one of the their best, coupled the Mini movie/MTV collection they released in conjunction with the album.Lareine only recently disbanded with Kamijo & Emiru going on to do new projects. However Lareine has left a rich library of music that spans more than a decade for any new listener to discover.Featured Album:Lareine - Imperial Concerto HERELuna Sea was a Hard Rock band formed in 1989 and apparently discovered by X-Japan's Guitarist Hide and was signed by yoshiki also of X-Japan to the Indie Label Extasy records in 1991.The group consisted of Lead Vocalist Ryuichi Kawamura, Guitarists Sugizo & Inoran, Jun on Bass & Shinya on Drums.Luna Sea did start out as a Visual Kei band however as thier career progressed througout the 90's, they took on more of a casual rocker look. But their musical style has always remained consistant in the Hard/Progressive Rock genre.Luna Sea gain such popularity by 1996 that they were able to fill Tokyo Dome for their concerts. Luna Sea's popularity in the J-Rock world at that time was only rivaled by X-Japan and remembered as being a premier rock band. After a total of 7 Studio Albums and two concerts on Dec 26 & 27th of 2000,Luna Sea disbanded leaving a rich catalogue of music for fans to savor.Featured Album:Luna Sea - Mother HERESong Line-upCharlotte- Bakamatsu KokouseiLareine- Stranger in New DaysLareine- The Soul LoveScrew- Thirty RevolverScrew- NanairoPhantasmgoria- Never RebellionPhantasmgoria- Fairy Time MemoryLuna Sea- MotherLuna Sea- LovelessWe are giving away a Japanese Import Copy of Miyavi's Tari Rari Tarara CD Single (1st Press) which is long out of print now.All you have to do is send a E-mail with your name, address & E-mail address to :mataabunaideka@yahoo.ca and you will be entered into our draw. The draw is open to anybody in the world and the only stipulation on entering is that you agree to be added to our Visual Rock Mailing list. The winner will be announced on our Episode 7 broadcast
