We got bored, so instead of being productive, or watching one of the shows we planned on watching, we instead watched season 2 of Detective Conan instead. We talk about each case and say which ones we like and which ones were just okay.
Little is known about the boy detective in Japanese detective fiction despite his popularity. Who is he, and what mysteries does he unveil about cultural understandings of youth in Japanese society? Manga, Murder and Mystery: The Boy Detectives of Japan's Lost Generation (Bloomsbury, 2023) answers these questions by exploring the figure of the shonen (boy) detective in commercially successful manga series such as Detective Conan, The Case Files of Young Kindaichi, Death Note and Moriarty the Patriot. The book explores how these popular works tackle the crisis of young adult culture within the socioeconomic climate of Japan's 'lost decade' and Heisei era, broadly speaking. Mimi Okabe shows how detective manga materialized in a nation undergoing a state of crisis and how the boy detective emerged as a site of national trauma to address perceived youth problems but in thematically different ways. Mimi Okabe is an assistant professor of Japanese Language, Literature and Culture at Baruch College. Amanda Kennell is an Assistant Professor at the University of Notre Dame. Her first book, Alice in Japanese Wonderlands: Translation, Adaptation, Mediation (2023), is out now. Learn more about your ad choices. This Halloween, we forced our friend Brock to watch the 25th Detective Conan movie. Which is quite possibly the worst entry point to the series. Suffice to say, it spoiled stuff for Shabs as well. It even spoiled some stuff for me, and I've been voraciously reading the manga trying to catch up.

Gachapon's Words from Sounds Gacha gacha! That's fun to say! The sound of the crank on a gachapon machine is called gacha gacha! Gachapon machines are full of small toys. You put money in, you twist the crank, and a plastic pod falls onto the tray. The toy is in the pod! 扭蛋機裡有很多小玩具,只要投幣,轉一下旋轉鈕。一顆塑膠扭蛋就會掉出來,裡面有個玩具。 Gachapon toys are part of a set. There are anime sets, manga sets, wacky cartoon sets, and more. Most people aren't happy with one toy. They want the whole set! 扭蛋玩具都是一整套。大部分的人都會想要一整組漫畫或是卡通玩具,而不是只有一個。 You never know which toy you'll get. And the toy you want almost never comes out! To get the whole set, you have to put money in again and again and again. It's easy to spend lots of money on gachapon toys! 你永遠不知道會拿到哪一個玩具,也總是拿不到想要的。要拿到一整組就要一直投幣,很容易一下子就花了很多錢。 The world's biggest gachapon store is in Tokyo, Japan.
