Show Notes 0:00: The two hosts of TheOASG Podcast return once again to talk about what they’ve been up to over the past few weeks, which involves Justin talking about the Star Detective Precure and Detective Conan collaboration and Helen talking Shonen Jump catchup, Bookworm Part 3, and Ramparts of Ice! News 23:02: Dark Horse staff recently formed a union (Dark Horse Workers United), and the company has recognized it — the hosts will see how negotiations will go moving forward; Japanese VA Kenjirō Tsuda filed a lawsuit against the operator of the video-sharing app TikTok for posting videos that allegedly used AI (artificial intelligence) to imitate his voice without permission, and it will be something to monitor moving forward. 29:46: Let’s just say voice actor Kazuki Atsumi might have had a future in the talent industry, but after his contract was terminated by his agency following a report of him being arrested for suspected sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl, the future ain’t looking great for him; meanwhile One-Punch Man artist Yūsuke Murata decided he had to comment on a very wild post about Pakistani Britons, and the comment was so bad that people in many languages criticized him. 34:44: Animator and character designer Kunihiko Hamada shared that he is no longer working at Madhouse — the two hosts discuss Madhouse letting him go after 35 years and how they let him go; Justin and Helen have questions and some concerns on Aki Sora manga creator Masahiro Itosugi saying he has banned by Google while uploading older works to Google Drive. 39:39: A few Japanese magazines will be ending soon or sometime this year; the Captain Tsubasa: Rising Sun Finals manga will enter a hiatus following the 100th chapter; Nippon Sangoku will go on hiatus as creator Ikka Matsuki recovers from steroid withdrawal syndrome; and Eiji Hashimoto announced they will temporary switch to a triweekly schedule for Rappa: Yankee Ninpū Chō after a two-week hiatus due to numerous ailments he’s going through right now. 44:43: Galaxy Express 999 lyricist Jun Hashimoto sadly passed away in a Tokyo hospital at 86 due to liver cirrhosis; Screenwriter Takao Koyama posted on X/Twitter a few weeks ago that scriptwriter Hiroyuki Kawasaki had died on January 23 at 60 years old; and Japanese film director and special effects artist Yoshihiro Nishimura died at 59 — Variety reported that Nishimura had been in the hospital for nearly two weeks fighting a liver disease. Licenses 47:37: Another Taiyo Matsumoto manga has been licensed — but not by VIZ, by Manga Mavericks Books instead!; Aloha Comics announced they’ve licensed Ikuno Tajima’s After Märchen (Ever After in English) as their first ever manga license; K MANGA added a few new titles to its service; and so did Manga UP!; Kogattuo & Ichika Kino's World Wide Web MIKO! has been added to MANGA Plus. 51:21: Not new licenses, but might as well be considering some of these titles have been out of print for a long while! Look out for a couple Jiro Taniguchi titles, Hideo Azuma’s Disappearance Diary, and Kiriko Nananan’s Blue at some point this year; And with Otakon happening next month, Discotek announced a couple titles ahead of it, including the next entry of Digimon for them (Tamers) and the Hana Yori Dango anime. Streaming News 53:00: GKIDS acquired the North American theatrical rights for Adolescence of Utena and will screen the movie in Japanese with English subtitles in US theaters June 21-22, which has Helen in a pickle; JUJUTSU KAISEN Hidden Inventory / Premature Death compilation film and English dubs for Given: Hiiragi mix and Given The Movie: To the Sea, and the Bean Counter OVA are now on Crunchyroll. 55:49: HIDIVE has announced their comings and goings from the service this month, from the Heavy Metal L-Gaim TV anime and OVAs to The Life of Budori Gusuko being added, while Get Backers, Humanity Has Declined, Mayo Chiki!, and Wasteful Days of High School Girl anime are leaving HIDIVE on June 30; premieres of the Cherry and Virgin film and the Sekiro: No Defeat anime will happen at this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival. 58:34: And yes, Conan Cinema Saturdays has returned this summer…which means Justin will just be vibing and getting these movies views instead of watching most of them properly this year! Weird News 1:00:25: Osaka's holding an exhibition of 17th Century Dutch masterpieces, and it's set to take place at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art in Osaka between August 21 to September 27. Somehow, Frieren and Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring is a part of it as a crossover, and Helen had a great story to tell involving earrings and which one it needs to go on for this rabbit, but found out that those without a Bluesky account can’t see it. Guess who found this out mid-podcast? 1:03:43: We will now have Baki’s dad in Tekken 8, meaning these anime/manga characters appearing in fighting games has gone up somehow. 1:05:19: Usually we put a manga getting a US live action in this section because again, these normally don’t work out very well — somehow it’s that and weird because it’s one of most unlikeliest manga to get a US live-action series…it’s based off a Josei manga series! If there’s anything you’d like to share about the latest news or about the episode, please feel free to reach out to us on Twitter (@TheOASG) or comment below with your thoughts!
This week, Detective Conan and Precure team up for some crossover action, the 2026 Crunchyroll Anime Awards winners, and McDonald's Japan teaming up with Mega Man! Also, Netflix to stream 20 NHK drama titles, Crunchyroll Japan profit drops 63 percent, and The Pokémon Company to require government ID for purchases? Meanwhile in Japan, a temple burns to the ground, sacred fire safely unharmed, and KFC Japan lists three "American" burgers on its menu?
Show Notes 0:00: Justin and Helen once again go over what they’ve been up to while working with a mix of cold and hot weather changes in the past few weeks! Helen found time to check out light novel series True Love Fades Away When the Contract Ends while Justin, as mentioned in the last episode, watched the latest Detective Conan collection set. News 9:57: Japanese talent agency Amuleto released a statement after unauthorized photos of voice actor Aoi Nagatsuki were released online; we had the Delicious in Dungeon: Ryoko Kui exhibition in New York last year, this year it’ll now happen in Los Angeles. 13:23: We have a couple manga returns: The Elden Ring manga resumed following a 3-month hiatus; Mari Yamazaki’s Thermae Romae sequel manga Zoku Thermae Romae resumed serialization with a new chapter in Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ platform; Aki Hamaji’s Bocchi the Rock! will return in the next issue of Houbunsha’s Manga Time Kirara Max magazine; and Days of Diamond, after it’s been on a bit of a break, will return in June. 16:09: And in possibly a first for this podcast, we can cover the return of a music group! Home Made Kazoku is back after a 10-year hiatus and they’ll be working on music again, so for those who grew up with Bleach, Eureka Seven, and Naruto: Shippuden, here’s your dose of nostalgia in 2026! 18:03: Even the Student Council Has Its Holes! will go on break due to Muchimuro’s health, but it will resume early June; Kumichi Yoshizuki announced a break from publishing the Nankai Trough Kyodai Jishin manga due to a good number of health ailments. 19:33: English voice actor Bill Wise, who voiced in a number of anime dub roles from Initial D: Legend to Moeyo Ken, passed away at the age of 61; Japanese voice actor Takahiro Fujiwara passed away a few weeks ago at the age of 43 — had a number of roles in anime but while voicing the character Kan Jou (Huan Chang) in the Kingdom anime, he had to step down from the role in August last year due to health reasons; Musician and composer Yuji Ohno — known for the iconic opening and soundtrack of the Lupin the 3rd series — passed away due to natural causes at the age of 84. 24:05: Talent agency Aoni Production announced that Wakana Yamazaki passed away at 61. She had an health ailment earlier this year that was serious enough for her to stop recording episodes of Detective Conan in February. The long-time voice of Ran and her experience in the voice acting industry was a huge loss, and from her Conan castmates and staff to other talents across different industries, her impact was notable and will be sorely missed. Akemi Okamura, who voiced the character since March 14 while Yamazaki was undergoing medical treatment, will now take over the role of Ran moving forward. Licenses 29:54: Yen Press apparently had to have announcements pre-convention and at a convention! And there is a lot of licenses they announced: Kumo Kagyu, Kōtarō Sekine, & Noboru Kannatuki's Moscow 2160 manga Fujino Ōmori, kakage, & Suzuhito Yasuda's Argonaut: Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Tales of Heroes (Yen On) Sakuhiro's Love at the City’s Edge on a Moonlit Night Ryoko Kui's Terrarium in a Drawer Akumi Agitogi & Hidari's The Story of the Moon Waiting for the Evening (Yen On) Minoru Matsuda's He Was My Brother Sino Torino's egg: I'm Your Child Gakuto Coda, Meiji, & potg's After-School Duty Yomu Mishima & Pinakes's Valkyrie Bullet (Yen On) Hijiki's Contract Sisters Nagimiso's Izumi and the Dragon Encyclopedia sanorin's My Girlfriend is a Colossal Cutie Hyōgo Amagasa, sugino, & LINO's Tale of the Wizrain Kingdom: The Dragon Is the Bride Rainy Kamitsuki, Minori Tsukahara, & LAM's Witch and Hound Ichiro Sakaki & Shiba's On the Way Home After Defeating the Demon King (Yen On) Kosaka Hanane & Kurogiri's Rise of the Lowborn: Ascending the Ranks by Crushing Incompetent Nobles (Yen On) Kamaseinuesu & Yuu Oukawa's The Demon King Seems to Have Infiltrated the Hero’s Party (Yen On) Fujino Ōmori & Yūnagi's Wistoria: Wand and Sword (Yen On) Anju Goshirakawa & Mayu Murata's Honey Lemon Soda Nauchi's Snowmelt and Agapanthus Yodaka Kuroi's Witch and Cat Yukari Sakai's Sinful Is the Angel Who Loves Hirohisa Satō's Shigahime Uma Agri's Studio Cabana Karuho Shiina's Gusts and Beats Shin Yamamoto's Twilight Vessel-Gods 35:21: Seven Seas had considerably less announcements and they’ll be on a Wonderful Wednesdays break for a bit. So here’s their set of announcements until then: Hana Hasumi's Pendulum: The Beastmen Omegaverse Saga Rico Sakura's Good Night, My Little Bird Oki Eiko's The Cat Who Didn’t Believe in “What-ifs” KNOTS' The Tomorrow I Want to See with Kako: A Time-Loop Romantic Comedy Dokuzu Kento & Nekosuke Ookuma's Goetia Shock (Airship, digital) Hagane Kurodome & Kayahara's Wandmaker of the Ruined World (Airship, digital) Two new Siren audiobooks: Sohei Mikawa's Magic User: Reborn in Another World as a Max Level Wizard (Narrated by John Patneaude) & Satori Satori’s A Good Day Starts with Cats and Books (Narrated by Sara Matsui-Colby) 38:13: Abrams ComicArts’ Kana imprint announced they’ve licensed Tsubonari’s Antengai: Twilight Metropolis; Manga Mavericks Books announced they’ve licensed Zawayuki Taki’s Tie Me Up, Stare Me Down; One Peace Books announced on Behind the Manga that they've licensed Toshimichi Uzou, Si-me, & Kewi Hayashi’s My Sweet Marriage to My Ex-Nemesis; and we have a new title added to K MANGA: Rin Mikimoto’s Keepsake Heartache. 39:34: California-based distribution company Deaf Crocodile announced they’ve licensed the Frankenstein, Legend of Terror anime, which Helen explains seems like an odd title for them to bring to home media. Streaming News 40:45: We will have a Macross screening of Do You Remember Love? at Anime Expo — and there will be guests at the con too; Netflix revealed they will stream Ginga Tokkyū Milky☆Subway Kakueki Teisha Gekijō Iki, the re-edited film for Yōhei Kameyama’s Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express in the U.S. on June 1, while announcing a few other anime that will appear on their service, from My Dress-up Darling Season 2 starting yesterday to Shangri-La Frontier: Season 2 appearing June 1. 44:42: Licensing and dubbing studio SkySet Entertainment announced they will stream the Go Forward anime series over the summer; Streaming service Darkroom has added the Haré+Guu Deluxe anime with the English dub for streaming with a premium membership; Cineverse’s RetroCrush streaming service will have the Medabots anime stream on the RetroCrush FAST channel every Saturday and Sunday, which gets Helen once again wondering what the appeal of watching anime at certain times of the day; and Tubi TV announced on Monday that it has licensed Yokoso Scooby-Doo!, a new anime in the Scooby-Doo mystery comedy franchise — this gets the hosts wondering if we’ll be seeing more of Tubi TV and anime streaming moving forward. Weird News 52:10: The two hosts discuss Ken Ogino commenting on his Lady Justice manga that he created for Weekly Shonen Jump back in 2015, and what the editors told him that shifted the mindset of his serialization back then. 56:46: Let’s just say the Gamestop buying eBay did not last very long, and Helen could not believe the statement eBay gave after rejecting the bid; well, this took a turn in a good way involving singer aiko and why she hugged a fan during a concert; There’s apparently going to be a Hello Kitty live-action/animation film coming in 2028, but it sure went through some changes since 2019! 1:01:47: And well, the crossover of all crossovers has happened that makes total sense this year: Detective Conan and Detective Star Precure are crossing over this year — maybe Justin will give thoughts on both in the next episode! If there’s anything you’d like to share about the latest news or about the episode, please feel free to reach out to us on Twitter (@TheOASG) or comment below with your thoughts!
0:00: Justin talks about diving into the Kingdom experience while Helen’s just ready to talk about the news that happened over the past two weeks. A good amount of news happened! News 5:17: The two hosts discuss two pieces of AI dubbing news, one involving voice actors in Japan, and the other one intending to use AI in anime production and needless to say, it’s not looking great! 10:12: Both Helen and Justin wonder about TOHO and how big a player they’ll become in the anime industry following their acquisition of Anime Limited from PLAION PICTURES. 14:03: So yes, unless an actual acquisition happens, it’s safe to say TheOASG Podcast will not talk about Warner Bros. Discovery unless a deal actually goes through or is stopped after Paramount’s hostile bid was, in the end, rejected; If you’ve been watching certain anime for free with ads on Crunchyroll, you won’t be doing so anymore in 2026, as they’re going to end their free ad-supported service. 18:53: Ammitsu’s Gazing at the Star Next Door's on hiatus until Spring as the creator preps the new arc; Rumi Ichinohe’s I See Your Face, Turned Away recently seemed to come back after a long hiatus, and it’s gonna end in the next chapter; and Boichi’s The Marshal King will go on hiatus for an undisclosed reason. 22:17: Also sort of weird — after a long time, Yona of the Dawn, which just saw its manga end, announced there will be a sequel to the anime. Sure took its time! 26:05: And in final news of the episode, the two hosts send their condolences to the friends and family of long-time voice actor voice actor Tomomichi Nishimura, who died on November 29 at 79. Licenses 28:08: US companies had to end the year with some licenses, and we got a decent amount, starting with Yen Press: Chika Tōjō's Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury—Vanadis Heart Ema Okadachi, otori, & Kou Kusaka's A Timid Lady was Turned into an Ugly Cat, but on the Verge of Fainting Is Picked Up by the Most Fearsome Military Duke Chitose Kaido's Thank You for Taking Care of Our Boy Banri Yūya Sakamoto's The Daughter of the Demon Lord is Too Kind! It’s the End of the World! rarutori, Ciavis, & Kō Narita’s High Elf with a Long Life manga Mizunomoto’s When I Was Reincarnated in Another World, I Was a Heroine and He Was a Hero The two then get into discussing which title they prefer that was translated into English: Modern Villainess: It’s Not Easy Building a Corporate Empire Before the Crash or It’s a Little Hard to be a Villainess of an Otome Game in Modern Society. 39:23: We have One Peace Books announcing exclusively on Behind the Manga the following new titles: Senya Mihagi, jaguchi, & Sato Pote’s Lockdown Life with the Class Beauty, Teika, Waka Sanada, & Hamu’s The Delinquent Girl Beside Me Suddenly Dyed Her Hair Black?!, and tera, Hayate Asakura, & Tetta’s The Villainess Who Came to Marry Into the Frontier Noble’s Household Is an Exceptionally Capable Wife, Isn’t She?; Hanashi Media announced a brand new license for their LN line; and Inoue’s #Gal x Gal Yuri manga is now on VIZ Manga. Streaming News 41:16: Part 2 of Rivals of the Great Detective Collection will drop on New Year’s Day, which means Justin has to be hyped about more Detective Conan. He also gets into the final Conan Cinema Saturdays movies, which will end January 3 with the first movie in the long-running franchise. 45:29: Helen then goes out of her way to talk about the Hatsune Miku anime film being the final bit of streaming news this week, only for Justin to remind her that she didn’t talk about Magic Kaito 1412 getting a dub on an obscure service (45:45). Cue much discussion that leads to somehow bringing up Conan, Yaiba, and Kaito Kid in a Cinematic Universe! Weird News 47:27: Helen goes over the strange situation involving physical copies of Higurashi: When They Cry Hou – Hou + having malware, which had MangaGamer having to recall it from stores. 49:50: Now it’s officially official: GAINAX is dead; the Naruto franchise is getting a Konoha land theme park in France; meanwhile a burger chain in Texas now has a Spy x Family burger for people to eat. 56:31: And final weird news for 2025, manga getting an anime years after it ends is unusual but over the past couple years it hasn’t reached the levels of what Psyren and then Iron Wok Jan! have inspired now! Both hosts discuss this unusual trend and also go back in time as to how they each got into these manga respectively! Feel free to send questions or any comments you might have about this week's episode in the comments section below, to contact at theoasg dot com, or to our Twitter account (@TheOASG). Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip - that started from this tropic port aboard this tiny ship. Xander was a mighty sailin' man, and Andrew brave and sure. Jet and Joe set sail that day for a three hour tour, a three hour tour. Anime Expo happened and that means our adventure to all that happened in Los Angeles that weekend, of which there was plenty of good and even a bit of smoke going off early - don't worry, everyone's fine, it's just one of those mechanical issues that tend to come up. And from this year's AX, we'll be talking about plenty of interesting manga license pickups, some cool new show announcements aside from the BIG news of Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2 which... WILD, and Gigguk is doing a thing too. Cool. But there was other cool things that happened before and after AX that deserve to be talked about, like the new dub initiative for Detective Conan, a really fun world record tying into one character's speech going LUDICROUS SPEED, the return of Rie Matsumoto in the director's chair, a surprise theatrical run for... Tokyo Ghoul... okay... and one more trip to France with a few cool things happening at Japan Expo - and yes, this show IS a three hour tour, once again. Enjoy the fun shenanigans all around. PRODUCER'S NOTE: This show was a PAIN to put together, from sync issues to trying to cut out a lot of background noise to trying to make this show not be longer than 3 hours, but the biggest issue happened late in the show where Jet's microphone got disconnected while we were talking about the new Fist of the North Star series being announced. The entire segment had to be cut, we'll make up for it next time. intro - the NEW Panty & Stocking dub situation is crazy 11:52 - pre-AX/post-AX news announcements (Detective Conan new dub, 100 Girlfriends world record, Rie Matsumoto returns, Tokyo Ghoul back in theaters… for some reason) 49:29 - Japan Expo 2025 (Anime Limited, Junji Ito, Moyoco Anno/Khara) 57:44 - Anime Expo Day 1 (Gigguk anime, GATE blockchain thing, Yen Press) 1:38:53 - AX Day 2 (Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2, Kodansha, Titan Manga, N LITE, Manga Mavericks) 2:20:26 - AX Day 3 (Viz, Netflix, Square Enix, Crunchyroll) 2:57:25 - wrap-up Apple Podcasts – https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/podcastona/id1348141210?mt=2 Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/2JZLO3LfoeHepomejTw4TP iHeartRadio – https://www.iheart.com/podcast/256-podcastona-43099114/ TuneIn – https://tunein.com/podcasts/Podcasts/PodcastONA-p1249922/ As always, check out surrealresolution.com for more content, updates on the show, our continued news posts, reviews, and our fellow podcasts.

Little is known about the boy detective in Japanese detective fiction despite his popularity. Who is he, and what mysteries does he unveil about cultural understandings of youth in Japanese society? Manga, Murder and Mystery: The Boy Detectives of Japan's Lost Generation (Bloomsbury, 2023) answers these questions by exploring the figure of the shonen (boy) detective in commercially successful manga series such as Detective Conan, The Case Files of Young Kindaichi, Death Note and Moriarty the Patriot. The book explores how these popular works tackle the crisis of young adult culture within the socioeconomic climate of Japan's 'lost decade' and Heisei era, broadly speaking. Mimi Okabe shows how detective manga materialized in a nation undergoing a state of crisis and how the boy detective emerged as a site of national trauma to address perceived youth problems but in thematically different ways. Mimi Okabe is an assistant professor of Japanese Language, Literature and Culture at Baruch College. Amanda Kennell is an Assistant Professor at the University of Notre Dame. Her first book, Alice in Japanese Wonderlands: Translation, Adaptation, Mediation (2023), is out now. Learn more about your ad choices.
