De druk op Starmer om plaats te maken voor de zevende premier in tien jaar tijd, neemt per dag toe. Zeker nu twee enthousiastelingen zich officieel kandidaat hebben gesteld. Wes Streeting, de inmiddels afgetreden minister van volksgezondheid, wier naam al rondzong maar die tijdens de kabinetsraad zijn kaken stijf op elkaar hield, heeft zich alsnog kandidaat gesteld voor het premierschap. Ook Andy Burnham, de burgemeester van Manchester heeft zich kandidaat gesteld. Voor hem is zelfs een speciale constructie bedacht om het premierschap überhaupt mogelijk te maken. Nu het onderzoek naar belastingfraude door Angela Rayner is afgerond en de belastingdienst haar niets verwijt, lijkt de weg naar 10 Downing Street voor Ms Rayner helemaal vrij. Hello and welcome to a special AX edition of the DDRCI contribution to QNEWS. I'm John VK4JPM, Secretary of the Darling Downs Radio Club, and it's my job to spread good tidings. Ho Ho Ho. So as you listen live, it's most likely Sunday 17 May, and you've probably heard that today is World Telecommunications Day. Under a long-standing agreement between the ACMA and the WIA, all VK licenced amateur radio operators may use the special AX prefix today, running up to 2359 tonight. Why not come up on the callback as AX? If it's Sunday morning, then why not also join us at 1000 for the club net on VK4RDD, and we're activating today as AX4WID. We love hearing from DX stations and members of other clubs. If you can hear this you already have the gear, so you just need to be in range of Toowoomba. If you missed the club meeting last Monday, you missed something rather special. Guy Martin from ADSBSupport in Denmark explained a bit how ADS-B works; how to get global coverage to track planes; and what interesting information can be gleaned and displayed. A number of club members have applied to support ground stations, and I know of at least two club members who have been accepted as ADSBSupport builds its network. If you're interested in supporting a ground station, and if you missed the meeting, drop me a line to Secretary at DDRCI.org.au and we'll tell you how to get in touch. Coming up, the diary dates for a very busy June: Next club activity: we're at Bunnings Toowoomba North on Sunday 7 June. GB2RS News Sunday, the 17th of May 2026 The news headlines: The RSGB releases a new set of mock exam papers Which RSGB Convention workshop will you take part in? Listen to Milton Keynes Hospital radio for an interview with the RSGB National Radio Centre Coordinator The RSGB Exams Team is pleased to publish new mock exam papers for Foundation and Intermediate levels. There are three for each level, and you can find them on the RSGB website at rsgb.org/mock-exams. These take into account all the changes to the syllabus and exam question bank which have been made since the last sets of mock exam papers were published. The Exams Team will not be publishing new mock papers for the Full level as the entire Full licence question bank is now available online. Candidates and Trainers can create their own full-level mock papers using the questions at rsgb.org/exam-questions The RSGB is running a practical and thought-provoking workshop for radio amateurs, makers, and home constructors, who want to understand what AI really is, what it is good at, where it can go wrong and why it matters. The session will run during the RSGB Convention on both Saturday, the 10th and Sunday, the 11th of October. It will use plain English and real examples from personal projects and will show how large language models can act as useful thinking partners for learning, writing, coding and building. At only £15 for a two-hour session, this is an opportunity not to be missed. As well as this, the Society is running an additional workshop on Friday, the 9th of October. In this six-hour workshop, you will learn how to use the NanoVNA effectively, understand its practical limitations and apply it confidently in your shack. You will also learn to calibrate the device correctly and complete hands-on exercises using your own NanoVNA. This RSGB member-only workshop costs £50 and includes lunch and refreshments. Both workshops are filled on a first-come, first-served basis and are limited to 20 people per session. Martyn met presenter Sophie at the Hospital Broadcasting Association's annual conference in March, when NRC volunteers spoke with attendees about amateur radio. During the interview, you'll hear Martyn talking about a range of topics, from why amateur radio can be an exciting and rewarding hobby to his work at the Centre and the role of the RSGB. He will also explain how amateur radio can contribute to mental well-being and prevent social isolation. You can listen to the broadcast from 1 pm by going to mkhrs.org.uk  and selecting ‘click to listen' in the top right-hand corner. Today, Sunday the 17th of May, is the last day of Mental Health Awareness week, and this year's campaign looks at taking action to support good mental health. The RSGB highlights some of the small actions that radio amateurs can do that can have a big impact. This includes showing kindness to one another, listening to each other and taking a few extra minutes to engage in a conversation. Over four days in May and June, Humber Fortress DX Amateur Radio Club is playing its part in raising awareness for men's mental health. Club members will be operating special call sign GB0MMH, and they are inviting radio amateurs to make contact. As the club says, let's break the silence one transmission at a time. Mączka was an outstanding Polish geologist, sailor and amateur radio operator. His legendary vessel ‘Maria' was the first Polish yacht to circumnavigate the globe twice, crossing the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans multiple times. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA and G4BAO on Thursday the 14th of May 2026 We hate to start the report on a negative note, but we are about to experience unsettled geomagnetic conditions over the next few days. The culprit is a large coronal hole on the Sun, which rotated into an Earth-facing position on Thursday, the 14th of May. This large coronal hole, an area with open magnetic field lines, has already been responsible for an increase in the solar wind speed to more than 420 kilometres per second. We can expect it to get worse as the weekend progresses. The hole spans the solar equator, so it is ideally placed to create maximum disruption to Earth. If the Bz interplanetary magnetic field swings south, we could see the Kp index rise and maximum usable frequencies, or MUFs, decline. If this happens, expect poor conditions until tomorrow, Monday, the 18th of May. Meanwhile, the solar flux index declined to 103 on Thursday, the 14th of May, which starts to put us in a difficult spot. Usually, we say that a solar flux index of 100 or more is needed for the 10m band to open. So it may be that you'll need to move lower in frequency for reliable HF openings. DX to be worked next week includes 3B9IDX from Rodrigues Island, T31TTT on Kanton Island, the last few days of XT2AW from Burkina Faso, and FO/F6BCW in French Polynesia. The Propagation Studies Committee's space weather station at Baldock identified a solar flare on Sunday, the 10th of May. The Doppler Flash, or Sudden Frequency Deviation, was triggered by an M5.7 solar flare that began at 1319UTC. While ‘Flash' is a good term for the fast-rising edge, the GB0PSC receiver has captured fine detail on the 20MHz signal from the WWV station in Colorado, showing multiple oscillations over a few minutes. X-ray radiation from the flare quickly increased absorption in the D region, reducing signal levels into the noise after ten minutes. But those minutes are crucial as they provide data to test whether X-rays or extreme UV from the flare were responsible for the Doppler shift and propagation anomaly. Next week, NOAA predicts that the solar flux index could rise to be in the 120 to 130 range, which puts us back in the fun zone. Unfortunately, and for the reasons mentioned earlier, we can expect to see a Kp index of 5 this weekend, but it will eventually decline to perhaps 2 or 3 as the week progresses. And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO The background pattern of unsettled weather remains with us for a while over the UK as a whole, but subtle changes from a cold northerly to a warmer southerly wind will bring higher temperatures back again.   To end the previous week, the cold northerly has brought some heavy showers with hail and thunder in places, and the GHz bands will have seen some rain scatter opportunities. The transition to a more southerly origin of the air will be taking place over this weekend, and although high pressure develops later in the week, we may have to wait until after midweek for any chance of tropo. The next few weeks encompass a couple of minor meteor showers, the Tau Herculids and daytime Arietids, to add to the random background input. There should be something to interest those looking for meteor scatter activity, and of course, it all contributes to the ‘fuel' for Sporadic-E, which is largely comprised of meteor ionisation.  The solar activity has recently been offering a few minor enhancements of the Kp index, but no great results on the aurora front.  Sporadic-E has been producing results on 6m digital modes, where there have been brief openings to VK, XT, DU2 and the USA for those lucky enough to catch them. The usual technique of checking during the two main activity windows of mid-morning and late afternoon should improve your chances. If you get an opportunity to look at the jet stream patterns, it can be worthwhile trying paths that cross these since it's believed they are good sources of atmospheric gravity waves that can reach the E region to aid the production of Sporadic-E. EME now: with maximum declination, the period of longest moon windows, now almost coinciding with perigee, the period of lowest path loss, conditions are at their best for the northern hemisphere. Moon declination is positive, reaching maximum tomorrow, Monday, the 18th of May. Path losses are at their lowest as we reach perigee today, the 17th. The 144MHz sky temperature is low all week. De Britse regering is in totale chaos na de verloren lokale verkiezingen van afgelopen week. Het premierschap van Keir Starmer hangt aan een zijden draadje, nu steeds meer ministers hem de rug toekeren. De eerste minister is al opgestapt. Toch wil Starmer voorlopig de handdoek niet in de ring gooien. Over de crisis en wat dat betekent voor de Britse politiek, spreken we VK-kenner Casper Kirkels. (10:09) Moet Trump Xi om hulp vragen?  Eerder werd de ontmoeting al afgezegd, nu lijkt het toch echt zover te zijn. Deze week reist de Amerikaanse president Donald Trump af naar Beijing om te spreken met Xi Jinping. Terwijl de oorlog in het Midden-Oosten als een schaduw boven de gesprekken hangt, is de grote vraag: kan China voor een doorbraak zorgen? En wat staat daar tegenover? Tijdens de ministerraad die vanochtend plaatsvond werd duidelijk dat Starmer niet opstapt als premier. Dat terwijl ruim zeventig Labour Kamerleden en meerdere ministers, waaronder Shabana Mahmood, de minister van binnenlandse zaken, publiekelijk kenbaar maakten dat ze willen dat Starmer opstapt. Sterker nog, een minister stapt zelfs op uit onvrede. De uitslag van de lokale verkiezingen van vorige week zorgde voor enorme onrust binnen de Labour partij. De partij van Keir Starmer verloor in bijna alle deelnemende gemeenten en dat terwijl Farage met zijn Reform partij als winnaar uit de bus kwam. Maar Starmer weet van geen wijken: ‘I am staying put’, zo trapte hij de ministerraad af. Hij gaf eerder al aan ‘dat hij verantwoordelijkheid neemt door niet weg te lopen en zijn land niet de chaos te bezorgen zoals de conservatieven dat jaren deden.’ Maar had hij niet beter zijn verantwoordelijkheid kunnen nemen door het stokje door te geven, bijvoorbeeld aan minister Wes Streeting die staat te trappelen om het stokje van Starmer over te nemen? Foundations of Amateur Radio About a year ago I set upon a new adventure, to determine if the dummy load I own, traditionally seen as a device that doesn't emit any RF, to determine if it was in fact imbued with the ability to absorb RF, rather than share it around like an antenna might. At this point you might be shaking your head, but this wasn't embarked upon lightly. I had spent several years experimenting with lower and lower power levels and came to learn that even 10 mW can make it to the other side of the planet, 13,945 km away. In other words, extremely low power can, under the right conditions, make it across the globe. So, with that in mind I connected a dummy load to my WSPR beacon and configured it to transmit across each band between 80m and 10m and then set-up an RTL-SDR dongle to monitor those same bands as well as the remainder of the amateur bands within the range of the dongle. I did this because I wanted to make sure that if there was any chance of a harmonic appearing unexpectedly, there'd be a good chance I'd see it. Then for a year I did nothing. Well, not exactly, but we'll get to that. After downloading 16 months of WSPR reports I extracted all the records that had my beacon in it and separated them into two groups. Those that had VK6FLAB as the reporting station and those that didn't. Both contained a significant number of signal reports. After doing some analysis, charting the efforts and discovering other phenomena, I can report back a little of what I learned. The dummy load does radiate, but I only saw reports from the dongle which is in the same room. I have already talked about this and at the moment the working theory is that the coax between the beacon and the dummy load radiates, or the beacon itself does, or something else, because the RTL-SDR dongle is clearly and accurately decoding WSPR signals. I'm not sure how I'd go about verifying where the radiation is coming from exactly or if I'd need equipment that I don't have or know about. That said, somewhat to my surprise, the signal reports were not static, varying considerably by as much as 40 dB. Notice that we're talking about a signal that is being, at least ostensibly, transmitted into a dummy load and being received on an external antenna. The signal reports don't appear particularly affected by time of day or band, that said, there's a visible range of reports across the year, but it's hard to observe anything definitive since most of September and October is missing. At this point I cannot tell you why that's the case. More on this in a moment. I did notice that some odd things happened to reports throughout the year. For example, on 40m, the reports were significantly poorer in the first half to 2025. 17m and 15m on the other hand were worse in the second half of the year. On the 25th of April here in Australia we're permitted to change our callsign to use AX as a prefix, so my VK6FLAB callsign would be AX6FLAB. On that day I configured my beacon to use 40m and connected it to the antenna for the first time in a year. I had several reports across the Great Australian Bight over 2,000 km away. At midnight UTC the next day I changed the callsign back to its normal VK prefix and changed the bands to use 80m, 40m, 15m and 10m, and left it connected to the antenna. While the antenna is a mono-band antenna, I wanted to know if it would still radiate on bands it wasn't intended for. Turns out that yes, it does, very nicely in fact. Since activating it like this, I've been heard by 79 different stations, as far away as 15,649 km in the United States, and in Antarctica as well as across Europe and several reports in Africa, the bulk in the Asia Pacific. Something curious though. I noticed that there were no reports on 80m and only a few on 40m. Pretty evenly split are reports on 15m and 10m. This was odd to me, since I would have told you that the antenna is a 40m mono-band antenna. You might recall, built by Walter VK6BCP (SK), I was given several antennas that are essentially helically wound verticals. I've used these ever since. I was adamant that I'd changed my antenna to 40m. After scratching my head for a bit, I decided that measuring might be a good idea. I discovered that the SWR, the Standing Wave Ratio, a traditional measurement of antenna effectiveness, on 80m is infinite, it's high on 40m, over 3 to 1 on 15m, just on 3 to 1 on 10m and similar on 2m. In other words, this is probably a 15m antenna. Now here's some things to observe. Based on reports across Australia, this antenna still radiates my 200 mW beacon on 40m, even though the SWR is 17.5 to 1, yes, you heard that right. This by way of noticing that the SWR has a relationship with how your antenna functions, but you might know, a dummy load has a perfect SWR of 1:1, in other words, the SWR is one way of characterising your antenna, but clearly it's not the final word on the ability of your antenna to get on-air and make noise. I've said it before, any antenna is better than no antenna. This left me with a growing sense of unease. Several of my measurements are missing, I wasn't using the antenna I thought I was, I don't recall exactly when I switched over from my 10 mW antenna experiment to my 200 mW dummy load, and no doubt there's other things that are lost, like local thunderstorms that encouraged me to disconnect my external receive antenna, or when I rebooted a frozen computer that wasn't decoding anything, or when the internet was down, not reporting to WSPRnet.org. Some of these things I can reconstruct. For example, I can roughly see in the logs when my beacon was reconfigured to 200 mW, but was it still connected to an antenna, or did I immediately connect the dummy load? I came to realise, probably again, that I should keep better notes beyond those that make it into my weekly efforts here. So, I built a "lab-notes" tool that will help with that. It's on my VK6FLAB GitHub page and consists of a single bash script that takes care of business. The notes are also stored on GitHub, so you can follow along. Feedback welcome. Admittedly, this still requires that I take notes, but at least one friction point has been removed, namely a place to make such notes. Feel free to make your own. In the meantime I'm going to figure out if I have an 80m antenna lying around and if I can use it with my beacon across multiple amateur bands. I'll make a note when I do. I'm Onno VK6FLAB
