...in which the chief mischief makers of The Innermost, Kristen Kalp and Rachel Clifton, talk about all the ways softness can show up, be cultivated, and benefit our lives in myriad ways. (Also why softness is SO FRIGGIN HARD to access in modern day, 2023 culture around the world.) Taboo Time is a taste of the general romping-through-the-taboos vibe we're bringing to our event, The Innermost, which is coming to Asbury Park, NJ this November! Take a look if you experienced conditioning meant for females and want to learn to identify and then avoid the pitfalls that conditioning causes in your work and your business.

Imagine making the momentous decision to pack up your entire life and move cross-country from Pennsylvania all the way to Portland, Oregon. You decide to start your move on January 1, 2020, because it feels clean and fresh with possibilities, and you embark on your journey with enthusiasm and optimism. And then everything, and we do mean everything, promptly falls apart. You get COVID, but you don't know it's COVID yet because no one knows what it is, and almost die. Your partner loses their job because of the pandemic, making you the primary breadwinner while you're still struggling to breathe every day. Your teeny tiny apartment, where you're now trapped with your partner in a brand-new city where you don't really have friends, and can't make new ones, is infested with spiders. That's just a taste of what Kristen Kalp's 2020 was like … and lord, the hits kept comin'. So, we sat down with Kristen, our friend-we've-never-met-in-real-life, to talk about what was inarguably the worst year ever. She got into… How she managed to keep functioning when literally everything was awful and she was trying not to die. Why she didn't totally lose faith, even in the pit of despair, that things would ultimately be OK. How, less than a year after her disastrous move, she ended up right back where she started at the end of 2019, but isn't upset about it. Her wisdom for you, if you're terrified of making the “wrong” choice and everything turning to crap. Leave a comment after you've listened to share how Kristen's crazy journey resonated with you! Today's show is a conversation with Kristen Kalp. Once upon a time, Kristen had a job photographing kids. These days, she's a writer, teacher, poet, podcaster and business coach for creative people. We start our conversation talking about photos of herself that have helped her - how they were made and why they help her. Kristen also tells us about having her senior portrait taken which was not a helpful photo experience. Then, our conversation moves to her work with creative people. She talks about what her clients, who are mostly women, struggle with and what she helps them see and do. See more at The Family Photographer website. Sign up to get my daily photo emails. As far as career coaches go, I’m pretty unconventional. As in, I don’t care much about the things that “career experts” usually tend to obsess about. I’m not interested in helping you write the perfect résumé or the most professional-sounding cover letter. (I’d much prefer that you reveal your humanity and personality throughout all phases of the application process, rather than sound like a highly skilled robot.) I don’t believe in “best practices” when it comes to job searching. (I don’t care what worked for someone else. I care what’s going to work — and feel good along the way — to YOU.) I have zero interest in writing “listicles” about “The 5 smartest job search strategies” or “7 interview tips you NEED to know.” (Yawn … aren’t there enough of those online already? I’m not here to add to the overwhelm.) But there is one aspect of traditional career advice that I can fully get on board with: the informational interview. Although I may not like them for the reasons you think… In this week’s blog I (Kristen) am sharing why I’m such a fan of informational interviews, plus how to get the most out of them. LET’S ALL BREAK OUR PHONE ADDICTIONS, TOGETHER Did you know that the average person thinks they’re LESS addicted to their phone than everyone around them, even though the average person is actually touching their phone over 2,000 times a day? Yes, you read that right. TWO THOUSAND. So, to help break us our phone addictions, we sat down with Kristen Kalp, a poet, writer, coach, empath, introvert, and most importantly, person-who-has-somehow-managed-to-only-be-on-her-phone-for-an-hour-per-day. If you’d like to join the two of us in doing Kristen’s 21-day email-based course all about breaking your phone habit, you can sign up here! It starts on June 11th. Full disclosure, Kristen asked us if we’d like to be an affiliate of her program, and we said yes! So we may receive a portion of proceeds if you sign up for her course. But, in typical Krachel fashion, we only endorse things we personally love and are doing ourselves. This is one of those things! The first step of recovery is admitting you have a problem. And to be frank – We’ve got a problem. And we’re pretty sure you do, too. Did you know that one of the metrics that measures phone addiction is if you can go 5 or more hours without touching it? Can you even REMEMBER the last time you did that!? ‘Cuz we can’t. GULP. Did you know that the average person thinks they’re LESS addicted than everyone around them, even though the average person is actually touching their phone over 2,000 times a day? Yes, you read that right. TWO THOUSAND. So, to help break us of our phone addictions we sat down with Kristen Kalp, a poet, writer, coach, empath, introvert, and most importantly, person-who-has-somehow-managed-to-only-be-on-her-phone-for-an-hour-per-day. On this episode of the Clarity on Fire podcast we talk about: The uncomfortable facts and figures that prove that you, like pretty much everyone else you know (except maybe like, your 85-year-old grandparents) is addicted to your phone Why we compulsively reach for our phones 24/7, and what we’re avoiding when we scroll Why you’ll never be as creative, interesting, smart, well-rested, grounded, and at ease if you’re always tied to your phone Why being addicted to your phone is 100% tied to feeling like you’re “existing” rather than “living” Strategies to help you let go of your habit gradually, and how to handle the withdrawal when it inevitably sets in If you’d like to join the two of us in doing Kristen’s 21-day email-based course all about breaking your phone habit, you can sign up here! After you listen, come leave a comment to let us know just how addicted you are to your phone, and what you intend to do to break your habit. MORE ABOUT KRISTEN KALP, IN HER OWN WORDS My work advocates for the aliveness and fulfillment you’ll only reach by rummaging around in the depths of your being and then being honest about what you find. I’m here to help your life come into alignment with your deepest desires — especially if you’re a bookworm, introvert, hermit, empath, or sensitive soul. I offer practical-yet-soulful business direction in my books, help clear emotional residue and blocks through breathwork, and make space to usher in whole-life transformation through coaching. If you're tired of saying you're going to do that thing someday, Kristen is your girl.

Life coach, Kristen Kalp, joins us today to talk about being brave and showing up for yourself in your life and in your business. We're talking about weighing the desire of a six-figure income vs. showing up for authentic human connection in your business, separating your work's worth from your self-worth, and taking the time for intentional, slow growth. I've been a big fan of Kristen Kalp's work for years now—she's a former photographer and a current writer and business coach. Her ebooks helped me find my own writing voice, her podcast has kept me company as I edit or work out, and her honesty always makes me smile. So we jumped on Skype to chat about money, boundaries, being true to yourself in business, working with people you really like and all things brave.
