I wanna ask you, have you ever thought of writing a book? If you've been in the industry for any amount of time, you've likely been told by a friend or a coworker that you should write a book. There's so many crazy things that happen to us in this industry, right? And putting it all in a book just sounds like such a great idea. But then you start to think, maybe that's a lot of work!? I'm busy already and I don't even know where to start or how I would get it published or what it would even be about???On today's show, my guest, Jeri Solomon and Edna Dratch Parker are both wedding pros in New England and Boston, and they came together over the last several years to write a book on how to plan a wedding. What I love about this book is that they did a really great job of simply setting the foundation of wedding planning for couples for newly engaged couples. They don't get into pricing and markets. They aren't trying to replace a wedding planner. In fact, they tell you that having a wedding planner is actually super important to planning your wedding. But they do really set the foundation for engaged couples to help alleviate some of those questions that we answer over and over and over again as wedding pros. If you've ever thought about writing a book, Edna and Jeri talk about their journey of writing and publishing their book, as well as what it's done for their businesses and why you should really consider authoring a book if that's something that's been on your bucket list.So you guys, I know that you're gonna enjoy this episode, so sit back, relax, and let's get into it!!-----Join The Wedding Pro CEO Podcast Community on Facebook! We LOVE our great wedding planners. We're so thankful to be in a place in our business where a large majority of our clients are hiring wedding planners. Why? Great wedding planners mean a big improvement in how our clients, vendor partners, and we feel about the weddings. Who's job is it to create your timeline? Be the point of contact for your vendors? Cut your cake or work with your guests on their food allergies? Do these jobs fall to your catering manager or wedding planner? In this episode, we're chatting with Amanda Douglas, the Director of Catering and Conference Services at the Four Seasons Ko Olina on Oahu, about catering managers vs wedding planners, and the benefits of having a wedding at a hotel vs an offsite event. If you're considering a wedding at a hotel (or even if you're not yet thinking about it), this episode is a MUST. Support us: patreon.com/unveilingparadiseCatering Manager vs Wedding Planner - Who's job is it?Roles of your Catering Manager - manages your food and beverage needs, should be informed of any allergies, schedules your venue walk through, creates a floor plan, assists with cake cutting, room blocks and champagne pours.Roles of your Wedding Planner - creates wedding day timeline, point of contact on the wedding day, assists with budget planning, runs the rehearsal, sets up your day-of items like favors, welcome sign, place cards, and assists with your personal needs like bustling your dress or tying your tie.NOTE: Amanda talks about a DMC (destination management company) - they assist with tours and activities during your stay. What's the main difference between catering managers and wedding planners? Wedding planners will take it all on - all vendors and services from start to finish. Their job is to take the burden off the couple and to manage all aspects of the wedding. Hotels and catering managers focus on delivering on their food and beverage, service, and venue space.Hotel vs Off-Site Wedding - The benefits of having your wedding at a hotel.Hotel weddings are a lot more inclusive and convenient for your wedding planning - little things you wouldn't normally think about are included, like extra forks, napkins, glassware, tables, chairs, linens, etc. The collective experience for your guests at a hotel is easier. Room blocks at a hotel allow guests to all stay together, and also you and your guests to drink responsibly and get back to their rooms safely. Transportation isn't needed for your guests.Overall hotel amenities include air conditioned reception sites during summer, air conditioned bathrooms, a staging area for the couple, and indoor backup spaces if needed. These perks are not often available at off-site venues! There are less restrictions on sound and music at indoor venues so dancing late into the night is totally doable.Amanda's pro tip - you can plan as much as possible beforehand, but on the wedding day, try to enjoy yourself and let it go! As a former personal trainer, Amber fell into the wedding industry quite by accident. When the economy crashed in 2008, Amber took the nearest desk job she could find at Deloitte. With grit and determination, she survived 7 rounds of layoffs working her way to a corporate event planning role in their Dallas office. Eventually, one event led to another and after hiring a “day of coordinator” for her own wedding, she realized she could do it better. So she did and along came her first business, Heavenly Day Events in Austin, Texas. Amber's philosophy on creating opportunities served her well in becoming a local leader, looked to for expert advice by her peers. After a decade in weddings and events, Amber pivoted her career to coaching others on a national level. As the host of Refine for Wedding Planners, Amber mentors new, aspiring and struggling planners via the largest Facebook group exclusively for wedding planners. She offers a course, retreat and templates that are known for being unlike anything else on the market! Community over competition is important to Amber and she is proud to have helped start the Associated Wedding Planners of Austin, a conglomeration of local planners seeking to grow and excel through ethics and standards. As a Public Speaker with regular interviews and publications in sources like Bustle, Pop Sugar, Style Me Pretty and Martha Weddings, Amber brings fresh perspective. Known for her radical honesty, Amber often says what most people are thinking but won't say, striving to elevate the industry one conversation at a time. Are you a wedding planner?
