"In Ohio, small businesses drive $1,700,000,000 of economic impact. And in 2023, Ohio jobs create or Ohio businesses small businesses created 10,747 new jobs in 2023." Brett Johnson and Carol Ventresca invite Kelly Fuller, a seasoned guest expert and the Senior Vice President of the Columbus Chamber Foundation, to discuss entrepreneurship. Emphasizing local resources, Kelly provides a wealth of recommendations for those starting or running a small business.Networking and Local ResourcesFuller highlights the importance of connecting with local chambers of commerce and economic development offices. These entities offer a plethora of networking opportunities and resources that can be invaluable for new business owners. Fuller underscores that even non-paying members can join chambers to benefit from networking events. Carol suggests that vendors, who are often fellow small business owners, are valuable sources of information. The discussion also brings attention to the importance of expanding one's networking horizon beyond their own industry. This approach can help entrepreneurs meet potential customers and peers in similar situations, thus broadening their support network.Programs and InitiativesThe Columbus Chamber has multiple programs aimed at supporting small businesses. One notable initiative is the Accelerate Program, funded by the city of Columbus. This program includes sessions like "brand camp" tailored to help businesses with their branding and messaging. Other remarkable programs include:Local Libraries and SBA ResourcesLocal libraries and SBA Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs) are also highlighted as essential resources. Public libraries often have business centers or knowledgeable librarians who can provide guidance. SBA SBDCs are particularly useful as they offer services even in rural areas. The Ohio Small Business Development Centers are widely accessible and federally funded, suggesting that similar resources might be available in other states as well.Fuller advises new entrepreneurs to be cautious and thoroughly research available resources to avoid unnecessary spending. Many resources can be accessed free of charge or at a reduced cost, making it essential to leverage these tools early in the business journey.Financial Management and Legal ConsiderationsThe conversation touches on the crucial aspects of managing cash flow and financial growth. Entrepreneurs must exercise financial restraint, avoiding significant expenditures on premium options initially. Rapid growth can lead to complications, particularly if a business can't meet increased demand. They recommend utilizing local resources like the SBA and SBDC for guidance on navigating these complexities. Engaging professional services such as accountants or attorneys might be costly but approaching them well-prepared can make the interactions more cost-effective.Branding and Cost-Effective StrategiesBranding emerges as a non-negotiable element of business success. "Brand Camp" by Conspire helps businesses establish their brand identity, which is crucial for differentiating in competitive markets. Fuller suggests that employing interns from colleges or high schools for managing social media and branding tasks can be a budget-friendly option. For example, Ohio State University's Bucks GoPro program offers opportunities to engage student-athletes for handling social media efforts.Additionally, Carol points out that cultivating relationships with professionals like CPAs can significantly aid as the company grows. Starting initially with interns or affordable solutions makes it easier for businesses to scale their professional...

I allow people to see their magic and create chemistry with their audience as well as create a business and brand that aligns with them. My mission is to create a world filled with ambitious, fulfilled, prosperous and happy entrepreneurs. I help my clients to step into their genius by leveraging my magic to find their magic and then bring it to the world so everyone can see it. When working with my clients at brand camp, we do the deep work first that entails thinking, and then we design. I often tell my clients that I'm designing and creating a brand for their business for the future. Brand camp is my methodology, and is the process I take all of our clients through before we design anything. It is really about all of the messaging and really understanding how your brand show up in the world, and how you are going to distinguish yourself from everybody else in your space. I've combined my background and design with these newer skills, which I had to embrace and step into. Commercial break My book is based on brand camp, and it walks you through the entire process of creating your brand. I wrote the book because I knew that I could only help us a certain amount of people through working with me one on one. I saw my book to be a great way to elevate my personal brand, bring more business into my business, and to get me more speaking engagements. For me getting really clear on why I was writing a book made me find my unique factor which was having a design background. When you get to fully step into who you are, and get crystal clear on that, the right people will be drawn to you like a magnet, and that's what brand chemistry is all about. ………………………………………………… Do you want to be a go to expert that news reporters, anchors and media producers turn to? Bonnie Wan has been working at Goodby since 1998. In 2022, she was named Advertising Age/Creativity Chief Strategy Officer of the Year. She started her career at Weiss, Whitten, and Stagliano in NY before becoming Adam Morgan's first hire at TBWA Chiat Day LA followed by stints at FCB and Hal Riney before joining GSP to work with Jon Steel. In the conversation, we talk about the shifts and changes in the strategy discipline with leaders moving from gurus to guides. Higher stakes for clients and a wider remit in terms of media expansion. She describes her approach to strategy is to work and think as a "team"- "it's not about being the smartest person in the room", but "making the whole room smart" and that requires a spirit of generosity. The department culture is key for Bonnie- it's all about her bench and her team and making alchemy happen between the members of the team. When it comes to philosophy around the process of strategy, she highlights the need for always-on, constant monitoring of culture and of consumers and the practice of always asking the smartest questions to ensure you arrive at a really interesting place. Bonnie talks about her development of "Brand Camp" which is a 6-week strategy sprint that gets clients to an "organizing idea" and involves workshops with GSP strategists and the client C-Suites. This has served to bring new non-advertising clients to the agency and codified in detail the strategic process. For emerging talent- she's created a 15-week training camp that teaches the fundamentals of Strategy. We also talk about her upcoming book- "The Life Brief" - where she applies the strategic thinking and framing used for brands to life. Which is something she applied successfully in her life, Bonnie has just signed a book deal with Simon and Schuster .

Graham North is a brand consultant who thinks the brand strategy process is in dire need of reinvention. He works at San Francisco agency Goodby Silverstein & Partners, where he invented and leads a brand strategy called Brand Camp, which combines rigorous research, radical collaboration, and a touch of brand therapy to help leadership teams make hard tradeoffs to align on better brand strategies. For his role in building Brand Camp, he was named Campaign's 2020 Strategic Planner of the Year. Graham is also Founder of The Weekend, a weekend-long brand accelerator consultancy. In this episode…. Graham North says his title is itself a branding issue. He would know as he's something of a brand consultancy expert. According to Jeff Goodby of Goodby Silverstein & Partners, “Graham is spearheading a new way of thinking and approach to clients' problems. It is exactly what clients need in this time of crisis and rapid reinvention.” In a 2016 article titled How the Advertising Industry is Wasting Talent, Graham posits the following thought: “Listen more. Doggedly remove barriers in the creative process, and stop trying to swoop in with all the answers.” He remains firm on this point and restates in this interview that his number one piece of advice is to “listen like you're wrong”. In this episode of What CEOs Talk About, host Martin Hunter and Graham North dive into what exactly makes (and breaks) a brand. They discuss what a brand is and is not, how to get to the core of what you actually do that defines your brand, why listening is a necessary part of identifying your brand, and some of Graham's process in defining brands for clients.
My guest today is Graham North, creator and head of Brand Camp at the iconic ad agency of Goodby, Silverstein, and Partners, the team behind Got Milk and many memorable campaigns. Graham just won “Strategic Planner of the Year,” and Jeff Goodby has said, “Graham is spearheading a new way of thinking and approach to clients' problems.” But what excites me the most about talking with Graham is how he can bring a group of people together to focus on the present moment. He cares deeply about holding space and real human connection. He's taken that passion for connection and created not just an incredible career for himself, but a novel and inspiring way of thinking about how we make meaning. Graham has two interwoven projects we talk about today, Brand Camp and Real Talk. Brand Camp is an intensive program for companies to find their “North Star” and shift operations to focus on the tangible, results-oriented core of their business. Real Talk is a card game about getting to the heart of things, whether that's in a team at work or a group of folks at a party. While these projects might seem lighthearted, there's a brilliant core of meaning and depth. I hope you enjoy this conversation with my friend Graham North.

(26:41) Jason gives his take on social media marketing. (35:06) Jason shares a story about the person he met at Brand Camp. (41:08) Tweetable Quotes: “If you're trying to build that relationship and give them those value-added services upfront and say, ‘Okay, sign here.' Well, we're not really doing that, because, for the most part, we're starting with the markets that we have.” - Jason Verlinde “Auto owners, the trips are great. We love the company we've been. We can track our history with auto owners all the way back to the 30's through several different ownership situations here at the office.” - Jason Verlinde “What I've started to do is try to take 10-15 minutes to scroll through that every day, and comment on things as the business. So, especially if you have one that has a lot of activity with other people commenting, you can get in there and you know, local people that see.” - Jason Verlinde Resources Mentioned: Jason Verlinde LinkedIn Verlinde Insurance Agency David Carothers Kyle Houck Florida Risk Partners The Extra 2 Minutes

What do you have to let go of in order to create a bigger impact? My guest Laura Beauparlant ran a custom stationery business for 12 years. She was highly successful, and her innovative wedding invitation designs had been featured in many magazines.Laura was making good money and building a name, but she knew that she wanted to leave the wedding industry. She wanted something bigger and better. She’d been doing design work for small businesses and soon realized she was making more money from small business branding than from her wedding invitations. She knew she needed to shift where she put her energy. In November of 2015, she quit doing wedding design completely and within 5 or 6 months she’d launched her new company, Lab Creative, and started her Brand Camp program. The lesson? Sometimes, you need to let go of something in order to grow.As Laura scaled up, she realized that couldn’t move beyond a certain revenue point without hiring a team and letting go of having full control. She needed to recognize that her role in her business is that of a visionary, and that the only way she could thrive in that role is by having a team to support her.She also needed to heal a money mindset that caused her to feel guilty about building wealth.Once she let go, she achieved some truly incredible results! In this episode, you’ll discover:The power in claiming your role as a visionary in your businessThe importance of recognizing when it’s time to hire — and how to be okay with bringing on new team membersHow shifting your money mindset can free you from limiting beliefs and guilt about building wealth“I have it in my calendar to pay myself every two weeks, just like I would pay anybody else... I’ve learned that I have to pay myself. The work I do is valuable and I deserve to get paid in my business.” — Laura BeauparlantAbout Laura BeauparlantLaura Beauparlant is author of the book Brand Chemistry, an award-winning keynote speaker, and the founder and creative director of Lab Creative, whose branding and design process offers their clients a unique blend of experience, personality, and style.Highlights:01:51 About Laura Beauparlant03:46 Transitioning to a new business07:49 Reflection & pivotal moments11:40 The challenges of hiring14:53 Key players Laura hired & why18:42 The finances of hiring21:32 Mindset shiftLinks:Laura Beauparlant https://www.linkedin.com/in/laura-beauparlant-4304381Lab Creative https://www.labcreative.caInstagram: @labcreativeincBrand Audit Offer https://www.labcreative.ca/brandauditBrand Chemistry by Laura Beauparlant https://brandchemistrybook.comBrand Camp: https://www.labcreative.ca/virtual-brand-camp - Use code CUMMINS for $250 off!To work with me and make your next power move, visit: https://shelaghcummins.comJoin the Road To Seven Facebook group to meet other like-minded entrepreneurs who want to band together and help each other rise up.I would be really grateful if you left a review on iTunes so that others can find and boost their business too! You’re eager to set up or level up your own business. You want to dive in and design your pro website and logo... but do you know your ideal audience??? Whether you are starting out or you’ve already hit your 5-Figure goal, your brand is a game-changer when it comes to setting yourself up for success and reaching your tribe! Chris Beltran, Digital Creative, is on the Epic Success Podcast today to guide you in re-aligning your brand to your values and audience! Chris is my personal branding expert and has shifted my brand from home-spun entrepreneur to a High-Level message matching how I best serve my tribe. You’ll get to see his genius influence in my soon-to-be-debuted new website! Chris is passionate about helping entrepreneurs optimize their designs and create a visual vibe to attract the right audience! Ready to re-vamp your brand? Let’s get started! The biggest takeaways from today’s episode are: - “Build an emotional connection with your audience, not just a visual connection” Before picking your colors and your design template, define your ideal audience. Who are you serving and how will your brand bring in the right people for your message? What do you want them to experience when they see your website, socials, and logo? Focus on their struggles and limiting beliefs. What solutions can you offer them and how will you impact their lives? [4:09] - “Captivate your audience” Your visual imagery must draw them in and your copy should make them feel understood. It is better to be clear than clever. Create a clear message aligned to your business’ core values and customize design templates to your brand. Consistent colors and designs make it easier for potential clients to find, follow, and buy your product or service. [7:07] - “Don’t wait until you ‘feel’ ready” Instead of waiting until you reach an arbitrary level of success, start building your brand as you build your business from the inside out. Come from a place of abundance and, with the support and guidance from experts, prepare your message for the audience you desire. Even if you’re at 5 Figures, it’s time to think like a 7-Figure Entrepreneur! [18:01] As you create your Epic Business, customize your branding to engage your desired audience. Your brand should clearly communicate your business values and represent how you serve your clients in their own goals in life and business. Bring your vision to life through your brand and get your genius out into the world! Connect with Chris and join his Brand Camp full of community-based interactive trainings and guidance from Chris himself on levelling up your brand! ______________________________ The doors to James Wedmore’s Business by Design are closing soon... “Everything we do as employees translates into the brand.” I’ve been fascinated by the Spiceworks brand since I first read about them in Jay Baer’s new book Hug Your Haters. This people-focused community platform for IT professionals is the very definition of an inside-out brand. I couldn’t wait to discuss this philosophy and more with Spiceworks’ Exec Brand Muse Jen Slaski on this week’s episode of the On Brand podcast. About Jen Slaski Jen Slaski is the Executive Director of Marketing Communications at Spiceworks but she’s more commonly known around the office as the “Exec Brand Muse” where she’s responsible for the essence of the Spiceworks brand – a brand that’s previously won MarketingProf’s Brand of the Year. And a brand that Jen refers to as an “inside-out” because of how Spiceworks company culture helps fuel it. Jen joined the company in 2006 and has been helping to create and evolve the company’s brand and marketing efforts ever since. Jen has always had a passion and flair for the start up world. Before Spiceworks, she held multiple marketing positions at companies like pcOrder.com and Motive, and ran a full spectrum of guerrilla, online and offline marketing programs, and events as an independent marketing consultant. Jen graduated from Stanford University with a Liberal Arts degree. In her spare time she enjoys day-tripping to classic Americana towns, vintage thrifting, journaling, collaging and facilitating self-discovery workshops and retreats for individuals, teams, and small interest groups.
