Pastor Dale BensonSometimes, in church, people are called "the lost." This term can mean so many things:- They don't know where they are.- We have lost money in the stock market.- We don't know where they are.- Some lost things need to be found.- We don't know where we are.- Some lost things need to be restored.- We have lost our grip on reality.- Some lost things need to be returned.- We have lost our sense of belonging.Luke 15:1-7 (NLT)Parable of the Lost Coin- Luke 15:8-10 (NLT)Parable of the Lost Son- Luke 15:11-31 (NLT)Lost things & lost people need to seek or be sought. Found things & found people need to be celebrated. We put people into categories:- Innocently Lost - Sought After: Celebration when the lost sheep was found- Carelessly Lost - Searched High and Low: Cleaned until the lost coin was found- Willingly Lost - He came to his senses: He went off looking for life and realized he had left it at home.I've witnessed:- What it means to be a part of the kingdom.- People who were innocently lost and who were found.- Shepherds from among the people of The Naz who have gone looking for lost sheep. - Fathers, mothers, and brothers opened their arms to a brother, sister, husband, or wife who returned. - People who have risen in prayer, in action, in generosity.- People who have been innocently lost or wandered away.- People who have lost their sense of the kingdom. We live in a fallen world with fallen people who do fallen things. We can feel lost even among a group of people who are celebrating. If we are careful, we can maintain sight of the Kingdom.
The Parable of the Lost Son: Luke 15:11-32 It's not fair Jesus defines God as Father Sin can be both ‘badness' and ‘goodness' We need the Father, repentance and motivation Religious people obey God to get things Gospel people obey God to get God
Come home and draw near to the Father. Neither the things of this world nor self-righteous deeds will satisfy your longing soul. Lesson preached by Clay Woodside on 05/12/2024 Conclusion of the Parable of the Lost Son in Luke 15
Many people look at the Christian faith as just a religion of do's and don'ts. Is it? This is a question we need to be very clear on as parents., for ourselves and for our kids. If our children think that the faith is just about all the things we can't do and all the things we have to do, then they don't really understand what Christianity is all about. And they probably won't stick around. They will become a part of the majority of kids who are leaving the faith when they leave the nest. God never intended for our relationship with Him to be a labor-intensive checklist that is more of a burden than a delight. If this is how your kids approach the faith, chances are at some point they will chuck it for a belief system that doesn't make them feel like they must constantly perform to be acceptable. So what are all those do's and don'ts about in Scripture? Catherine explains that the do's and don't are about protecting us, not making us acceptable to our heavenly Father. Christ's atoning work on the cross makes us acceptable to God. The don't list isn't comprised of a bunch of good stuff that God inexplicably doesn't want us to do—it contains what leads us to bondage. And God's overwhelming heart is not to condemn us; it is to free us. Scripture shows how Christ is the Good Shepherd who leaves the 99 sheep who are doing the do's to go after the one sheep being wounded by the don'ts. The Gospel of John depicts God as a passionate father who longs for his lost, don't-doing child to come home. The list of do's and don'ts in Scripture are an expression of God's love for his children, his concern to protect his children, and his desire for them to thrive. Let's delve into the richness of these stories and extract the timeless truths they contain.1. The Parable of the Lost Sheep:In this parable, Jesus illustrates the joy in heaven over one sinner who repents, contrasting the Pharisees' disdain for sinners with God's boundless love. We see the shepherd's relentless pursuit of the lost sheep, reflecting God's commitment to seeking out those who have strayed.2. The Parable of the Lost Coin:Similarly, Jesus shares the story of a woman diligently searching for a lost coin, highlighting God's delight in the repentance of sinners. Despite the Pharisees' judgmental attitudes, God rejoices over each soul that turns back to Him.3. The Parable of the Prodigal Son:Perhaps the most famous of the three parables, this story paints a vivid picture of God's unconditional love and forgiveness. Through the father's response to his wayward son's return, we witness the depth of God's mercy and the joy in heaven over repentant sinners. As we journey through these parables, we're challenged to adopt God's perspective on redemption and reconciliation. Let's explore the transformative power of forgiveness and the joy found in returning to the Father's embrace.Key Takeaways:Rejoice over what is gained, not lost, from heaven's perspective.Embrace God's seeking and saving love, celebrating the return of the lost.Shift from criticism to rejoicing over the salvation of sinners, echoing the joy in heaven over every lost soul that is found.Support the showMy Amazon Author Pageamazon.com/author/jeremymccandlessJeremy McCandless is creating podcasts and devotional resources | PatreonHelp us continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.com

Episode Three Of The Lost Son Luke 11: 28-32 KJV Verse 28 “The older brother was angry and wouldn't go in. His father came out and begged him, Verse 29 but he replied, ‘All these years I've slaved for you and never once refused to do a single thing you told me to. And in all that time you never gave me even one young goat for a feast with my friends. Verse 30 Yet when this son of yours comes back after squandering your money on prostitutes, you celebrate by killing the fattened calf!' Verse 31 “His father said to him, Look, dear son, you have always stayed by me, and everything I have is yours. Verse 32 We had to celebrate this happy day. Luke Chapter 11:11-19 NLT Verse 11 To illustrate the point further, Jesus told them this story: “A man had two sons. Verse 12 The younger son told his father, ‘I want my share of your estate now before you die.' So his father agreed to divide his wealth between his sons. Verse 13 “A few days later this younger son packed all his belongings and moved to a distant land, and there he wasted all his money in wild living. Verse 14 About the time his money ran out, a great famine swept over the land, and he began to starve. Verse 15 He persuaded a local farmer to hire him, and the man sent him into his fields to feed the pigs. Verse 16 The young man became so hungry that even the pods he was feeding the pigs looked good to him. But no one gave him anything. Verse 17 “When he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, ‘At home even the hired servants have food enough to spare, and here I am dying of hunger! Verse 18 I will go home to my father and say, “Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, Verse 19 and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. For a couple of Sundays, we have been thinking about the idea of celebration as part of our 'Month of Celebration' in October 2023. Here is the second in a series of two sermons on the parables in Luke 15. This sermon is on the Parable of the Lost Son (Luke 15v11-32) as part of a celebration service where we had a baptism and 12 new members. First preached: 29th October 2023. Speaker: James McNay.
"Son you are always with me and all that is mine is yours. But we had to rejoice and celebrate because this brother of yours was dead and has come to life; he was lost but now he is found."

Luke 15:11-32 11 Then He said: “A certain man had two sons. 12 And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.' So he divided to them his livelihood. 13 And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living. 14 But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land, and he began to be in want. 15 Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. 16 And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything. 17 “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father's hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! 18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, 19 and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.” ' 20 “And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. 21 And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.' 22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet. 23 And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; 24 for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' And they began to be merry. 25 “Now his older son was in the field. And as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. 27 And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and because he has received him safe and sound, your father has killed the fatted calf.' 28 “But he was angry and would not go in. Therefore his father came out and pleaded with him. 29 So he answered and said to his father, ‘Lo, these many years I have been serving you; I never transgressed your commandment at any time; and yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might make merry with my friends. 30 But as soon as this son of yours came, who has devoured your livelihood with harlots, you killed the fatted calf for him.' 31 “And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours. 32 It was right that we should make merry and be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.' ”

One of the main reasons young people are leaving the faith is because they are growing up in a legalistic faith. They approached their faith as a list of do's and don'ts. Their relationship with God was a checklist, a duty. In this episode, Catherine unpacks what the rules in the Bible are all about, why they are important, and how we sometimes misunderstand what they are about. The rules aren't about pleasing God. God's rules are given as a way to approach us. This week, BibleWorm reads Luke 15:1-32-- three parables of things that were lost and have been found. Somewhat in spite of ourselves, we can’t help but melt into the sheer joy of the finder. We wonder about the experience of those who were never lost. And Amy manages to embarrass herself so thoroughly that this episode is 1 minute too long because we couldn’t bear to cut the story out. It has to do with middle school - so you know it’s bad.

The parable of the Lost Son (Luke 15:11-32) can be divided into two acts: 1. The Lost Younger Brother 2. The Lost Elder Brother. The younger brother represents sinners and the elder brother represents the saints, the Pharisees. In this parable Jesus radically redefines God, sin and salvation. This provides a new lens by which we can see our world and ourselves.

Mark Searle speaking at morning worship
Sermon from Sunday Morning, May 28, 2017 at Union Hall Baptist Church in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Rev. Nick Hodges, Pastor.
Day 6 of 20: This is the parable of the prodigal son written out in poem style. I thought this would be an interesting topic to hit today. God bless everyone.
Last week’s sermon focused on the parable of the “Prodigal Son” from Luke 15:11-24. It was entitled “The Lost Son” because it dealt with the younger son who went to a far away country and “squandered his property in reckless living” (13). It was easy to identify this son as lost because his outward actions revealed a selfish heart and a lack of relationship with his father. This morning, we are going to discuss “The Other Lost Son”. The parable of the prodigal son is actually a parable about two sons. Last week we discussed the younger and this week we shall discuss the older. What I pray we all discover is that outward actions are not always a reliable indicator of one’s heart. Too often, we can conform to a public standard of respectability while harboring a private life that is far less respectable. http://firstbaptistscottcity.org/2014/02/25/sermon-luke-1525-32-the-other-lost-son/

What's a good way to help your prodigal son or daughter and many others? What does the prodigal story teach us about God's heart? Pastor Rick dissects each verse and bringing the message from Luke 15 into our everyday lives. There's so much wisdom to learn from this parable. Rick also shares a few of his own childhood stories about his loving mom, who passed away from cancer on April 6, 2022. Don't miss this opportunity to listen in, friends. I know you'll be encouraged! Rick Highlights these six truths: 1. The Lost Pharisees - Luke 15:1–3 2. The Lost Sheep - Luke 15:4–7 3. The Lost Coin - Luke 15:8–10 4. The Lost Son - Luke 15:11–20 5. The Father's Heart - Luke 15:21–24 6. The Lost Brother - Luke 15:25–32 Let's pray for and celebrate every son or daughter who was lost but is found, dead but alive in the blood of Jesus Christ. 31 “And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours. 32 It was right that we should make merry and be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.” –Luke 15:31–32 Now, more than ever, we must anchor ourselves in the Word of God; it will provide us with a firm foundation in an uncertain culture. Rick reminds us to seek God in prayer, to open our Bibles to fill our hearts with His truth, and to look up to remind ourselves that God is with us. We hope you enjoyed this episode.
