While people sometimes use the term "the church" as shorthand for the Vatican or the magisterium, the church is, strictly speaking, all its members, regardless of gender or vocation. So, while Catholic women are barred from holy orders and from most ministerial and leadership roles in the church, that doesn't mean they have no voice in the church.  Catholic women teach theology, catechetics, and preaching. They manage schools and universities. They serve on dicasteries and advisory boards. Women religious take the lead in social justice initiatives. Catholic women work as editors and journalists in religious media.  Some Catholic women even help train priests. And many do tireless—often thankless—work to keep parishes running smoothly.  But does all this mean that women have an equal voice in the church? On this episode of the podcast, the hosts talk to award-winning journalist Heidi Shlumpf. For three decades, Schlumpf has covered religion, politics, and women's issues. Currently senior correspondent at Commonweal magazine, she has also worked as columnist, correspondent, executive editor, and vice president at the National Catholic Reporter, and as managing editor at U.S. Catholic. SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 378, “Stone Cold Response to the Word of the Lord,” Kim discusses the dangers of allowing our hearts to be hardened to God's Word. Recently, we examined the tender heart of King Josiah and how hearing God's Word changed him and how he led. This week, we see that his son Jehoiakim's heart was as hard as Josiah's was tender. How tender or hard is your heart to God's Word?   Our focal passage for this episode is Jeremiah 36:1-32, with 21-25 as the focal verses:   21 The king sent Jehudi to get the scroll. Jehudi brought it from Elishama's room and read it to the king as all his officials stood by. 22 It was late autumn, and the king was in a winterized part of the palace, sitting in front of a fire to keep warm. 23 Each time Jehudi finished reading three or four columns, the king took a knife and cut off that section of the scroll. SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 375, “Choosing to Respond to God's Word,” Kim discusses the importance of surrendering to the power of God's Word to change you. So many times, we approach God's Word without opening our hearts and minds to be changed by what we find there. May we learn from the example of King Josiah as he reacted to the initial reading of God's Word and then went on to publicly respond and challenge others to respond.   Our focal passage for this episode is 2 Chronicles 34:29-33, and with 30-31 as the focal verses:   30 And the king went up to the Temple of the Lord with all the people of Judah and Jerusalem, along with the priests and the Levites—all the people from the greatest to the least. SHOW NOTES   In Podcast Episode 372, “Never Discount the Impact of Your Talents,” Kim discusses the talents each of us have been given and our accountability to use them all to the glory of the Lord. WHAT HAPPENS IN THIS EPISODE?
