SHOW NOTES In Podcast Episode 331, “Which Child Will You Protect?” Kim discusses the responsibility we have to be protectors of the next generation. In today's story, we see at least three people who were in on a dangerous child protection project. Each of them risked their life to hide a baby boy from his out-of-control, power-hungry grandmother, Athaliah. Our focal passage for this episode is 2 Kings 11:1-16, with 2-3 as the focal verse: 2 But Ahaziah's sister Jehosheba, the daughter of King Jehoram, took Ahaziah's infant son, Joash, and stole him away from among the rest of the king's children, who were about to be killed. She put Joash and his nurse in a bedroom, and they hid him from Athaliah, so the child was not murdered. 3 Joash remained hidden in the Temple of the Lord for six years while Athaliah ruled over the land. WEEKLY ENGAGEMENT FEATURE: Is there a child you are concerned about? Please pray for the child and prepare to act if the Lord leads. Additional Resources and Scriptures: 13 One day some parents brought their children to Jesus so he could lay his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples scolded the parents for bothering him. 14 But Jesus said, “Let the children come to me. Don't stop them! For the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those who are like these children.” 15 And he placed his hands on their heads and blessed them before he left. In the 28th message of our “Unveiling Yahweh” series, we will be looking at God's probationary system. God has set up earth-life as a testing ground to prepare us for eternity. To many, this concept may seem strange or unfamiliar, but a thorough examination of Scripture confirms this idea. In today's message, Steve Gallagher explains three aspects of God's probationary system to help us see the significance of our daily decisions. SHOW NOTES In Podcast Episode 330, “Are You Guilty of Cafeteria-Style Obedience?” Kim discusses the temptation we all face to pick and choose what we want to obey. Today's story highlights the character King Jehu of Israel, who did an outstanding job (seemingly going a bit overboard) with wiping out the evil lineage of King Ahab, but did a pitiful job serving the Lord in other areas. May our testimony not be the same, and may we be known as one who loves the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. Our focal passage for this episode is 2 Kings 10:1-36, with 31 as the focal verse: “But Jehu did not obey the Law of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He refused to turn from the sins that Jeroboam had led Israel to commit.” WEEKLY ENGAGEMENT FEATURE: When you listened to the biblical story example of cafeteria-style obedience, did the Spirit convict you regarding your own life? WHAT HAPPENS IN THIS EPISODE? How do you handle crowds? Jesus knew how. For a crowd of probably over 10,000 people, he provides teaching and healing and food. With just five loaves of bread and two pieces of fish, the crowd sits down to a picnic. When his friends get into serious trouble at sea, Jesus comes to them in a surprising way. He even invites an apostle to join him! The crowd is still with them – they've followed him across the sea. There is more teaching; this time it's tougher. How can Jesus be the Bread of Life? SHOW NOTES In Podcast Episode 329, “The Lord Is Never 'Slow' in Keeping His Promises,” Kim discusses the challenge of waiting on the Lord to fulfill His promises. In today's story, we see the long-awaited fulfillment of the Lord's promise to destroy Queen Jezebel for her lifetime of evil deeds. Our focal passage for this episode is 2 Kings 9:1-37, with 36-37 as the focal verses: 36 When they returned and told Jehu, he stated, “This fulfills the message from the Lord, which he spoke through his servant Elijah from Tishbe: ‘At the plot of land in Jezreel, dogs will eat Jezebel's body. 37 Her remains will be scattered like dung on the plot of land in Jezreel, so that no one will be able to recognize her.'” WEEKLY ENGAGEMENT FEATURE: Spend a few prayerful moments pondering the sometimes perceived slowness of the fulfillment of the promises of God. Additional Resources and Scriptures: 20 “So, my enemy, you have found me!” Ahab exclaimed to Elijah. “Yes,” Elijah answered, “I have come because you have sold yourself to what is evil in the Lord's sight. 21 So now the Lord says, ‘I will bring disaster on you and consume you. I will destroy every one of your male descendants, slave and free alike, anywhere in Israel! 22 I am going to destroy your family as I did the family of Jeroboam son of Nebat and the family of Baasha son of Ahijah, for you have made me very angry and have led Israel into sin.' 23 “And regarding Jezebel, the Lord says, ‘Dogs will eat Jezebel's body at the plot of land in Jezreel.' 24 “The members of Ahab's family who die in the city will be eaten by dogs, and those who die in the field will be eaten by vultures.” (1 Kings 21:20-24) 8 But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day. 9 The Lord isn't really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent. SHOW NOTES In Podcast Episode 328, “She Encouraged Him in Doing Wrong,” Kim discusses the evil influences on King Ahaziah of Judah. Not only did his own mother encourage him in doing wrong, but he was advised in similar directions by other relatives. All of us have had at least one person who either encouraged us in doing wrong or did something to us that changed the trajectory of our lives. Sadly, some of us may have also been that person in the lives of others. May God use today's lesson to bring to the light what has been hiding in darkness, and bring His healing to hurting hearts. Our focal passage for this episode is 2 Kings 8:25-29 and 2 Chronicles 22:1-9, with 2 Chronicles 22:3 as the focal verse: 3 Ahaziah also followed the evil example of King Ahab's family, for his mother encouraged him in doing wrong. SHOW NOTES In Podcast Episode 326, “Having the Heart of the Good Shepherd,” Kim discusses the heart of the Good Shepherd, as detailed in John 10, and the importance of praying for that heart to be in leaders today. Sadly, many who have been privileged to proclaim the Word of God, either in a pulpit or in a concert setting, have acted more like the wolf than a Godly shepherd. May today be a turning point as our prayers pour heavenward on behalf of all those in ministerial roles. Our focal passage for this episode is 2 Kings 8:7-15, with verses 11-12 as the focal verses: 11 Elisha stared at Hazael with a fixed gaze until Hazael became uneasy. Then the man of God started weeping. 12 “What's the matter, my lord?” Hazael asked him. Elisha replied, “I know the terrible things you will do to the people of Israel. You will burn their fortified cities, kill their young men with the sword, dash their little children to the ground, and rip open their pregnant women!” WEEKLY ENGAGEMENT FEATURE: Please pray regularly for your pastor. SHOW NOTES: How many roles does Jesus take on in this episode? He moves from teaching and story-telling to action. At the request of a leader of a synagogue, he heals her daughter. But, not before healing a woman whom he calls “my daughter” from a disease which has ostracized her from society for 12 years. He helps two blind me to see because of their faith. And he throws out another demon. But, opposition is beginning to build against his healing. The Pharisees think that he is throwing out demons by the power of Satan. And, when Jesus goes back to his home town of Nazareth, he is rejected and not believed. “Where did he get all this wisdom and power to perform such miracles.” He's just a carpenter and the son of Mary. Traveling around with a great crowd following, Jesus sees a massive work-load. So, he commissions his apostles to go – teach, heal, and throw out demons. He gives them specific instructions for their task ahead. Some of those instructions apply to us as well. Finally, we learn of the fate of John the Baptist at the hands of King Herod. WHAT HAPPENS IN THIS EPISODE: In this Jesus Stories episode, we examine the question of costs. Have you ever considered the value of the Kingdom of God? Jesus explains this to us. Given its value, then, what is the cost to follow Jesus into the Kingdom of God? Jesus explains that to us, too. We take a deep dive into these questions as we consider “The Cost For Following Jesus.” This is a tough teaching to hear. But, it is crucial to understand what Jesus asks of us as followers. SHOW NOTES In Podcast Episode 324, “What Would Cause You to Miss a Miracle?” Kim discusses the miracle that seemed to have been missed by the Israelites and their king. We see no evidence in scriptures that they were even aware that the Lord had intervened on their behalf, let alone understand what the Lord did to cause the Aramean army to flee. How often have you been like them and missed the miracles the Lord has done on your behalf? What caused you to miss them, and how can you keep that from happening again? Our focal passage for this episode is 2 Kings 7:1-20, with verses 6-7: 6 For the Lord had caused the Aramean army to hear the clatter of speeding chariots and the galloping of horses and the sounds of a great army approaching. “The king of Israel has hired the Hittites and Egyptians to attack us!” they cried to one another. 7 So they panicked and ran into the night, abandoning their tents, horses, donkeys, and everything else, as they fled for their lives. SHOW NOTES: In Podcast Episode 323, “The Miracle of Divine Insight,” Kim discusses the pattern of divine insights received and shared by the prophet Elisha. As we have walked through the stories of Elisha and his ministry, we have encountered multiple times in which Elisha knew information he had not received through human means. He had the inside scoop or the “before it happened” information. Why did the Lord trust Him with so many insights, and why might the Lord withhold insights from many followers today? Please tune in to hear Kim discuss some of her thoughts. Our focal passage for this episode is 2 Kings 6:32-7:2: 32 Elisha was sitting in his house with the elders of Israel when the king sent a messenger to summon him. But before the messenger arrived, Elisha said to the elders, “A murderer has sent a man to cut off my head. When he arrives, shut the door and keep him out. We will soon hear his master's steps following him.” 33 While Elisha was still saying this, the messenger arrived. And the king said, “All this misery is from the Lord! Why should I wait for the Lord any longer?” 1 Elisha replied, “Listen to this message from the Lord! This is what the Lord says: By this time tomorrow in the markets of Samaria, six quarts of choice flour will cost only one piece of silver, and twelve quarts of barley grain will cost only one piece of silver.” 2 The officer assisting the king said to the man of God, “That couldn't happen even if the Lord opened the windows of heaven!” But Elisha replied, “You will see it happen with your own eyes, but you won't be able to eat any of it!” WEEKLY ENGAGEMENT FEATURE: Have you ever personally experienced the miracle of divine insight? Additional Resources and Scriptures: From Got Questions — “The biblical definition of a miracle would be something like this: ‘an event that involves the direct and powerful action of God, transcending the ordinary laws of nature and defying common expectations of behavior.' Miracles are extraordinary occurrences that can only be attributed to the supernatural work of God and demonstrate His involvement in human history.“ 27 But when she came to the man of God at the mountain, she fell to the ground before him and caught hold of his feet. Gehazi began to push her away, but the man of God said, “Leave her alone. She is deeply troubled, but the Lord has not told me what it is.” (2 Kings 4:27) 48 “How do you know about me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus replied, “I could see you under the fig tree before Philip found you.” (John 1:48) EMAIL — encouragingothersinlovingjesus@gmail.com TWITTER - https://twitter.com/EOinLovingJesus INSTAGRAM - https://www.instagram.com/encouragingothersinlovingjesus/ “Encouraging Others in Loving Jesus” YouTube Channel: Check it out at https://www.youtube.com/@EncouragingOthersInLovingJesus I WANT TO BEGIN A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS CHRIST. This change of plans greatly upset Jonah, and he became very angry. So he complained to the Lord about it: “Didn't I say before I left home that you would do this, Lord? That is why I ran away to Tarshish! I knew that you are a merciful and compassionate God, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. You are eager to turn back from destroying people. Just kill me now, Lord! I'd rather be dead than alive if what I predicted will not happen.” (Jonah 4:1-3 NLT).--Chapter Time Stamps:00:00 Intro00:17 Chapter 103:06 Chapter 207:29 Outro--contact@parableministries.comhttps://www.parableministries.comhttps://www.instagram.com/parable_ministries/--Music created by Chad HoffmanArtwork created by Anthony Kuenzi--Holy Bible, New Living Translation, copyright © 1996, 2004, 2015 by Tyndale House Foundation. WHAT HAPPENS IN THIS EPISODE: Jesus tells stories in this episode of Jesus Stories! Jesus was the consummate storyteller. But his stories all had a purpose. They were used to teach secrets about the Kingdom. These are secrets that some can hear and understand; others cannot. We go through some of Jesus' stories in this episode including the explanations which Jesus offers to his disciples. Then, we begin telling the stories of Jesus' miracles. We watch as Jesus stills a storm at sea. And we meet a man who is possessed by a Legion of demons – until Jesus meets him. SHOW NOTES: In Podcast Episode 322, “Quicker to Point Fingers Than Bow Knees,” Kim discusses the importance of prayer and self-reflection amid challenging circumstances. Like King Joram in our story today, we struggle with the temptation to blame others and/or God when trouble comes our way. And, yes, sometimes the choices of others do lead to difficult circumstances for many. However, no matter the challenge and no matter the source(s), we can still go to the Lord and be drawn closer to Him in the process. Waste no opportunity to seek Him. Our focal passage for this episode is 2 Kings 6:24-31 with 30-31 as the focal verse: 30 When the king heard this, he tore his clothes in despair. And as the king walked along the wall, the people could see that he was wearing burlap under his robe next to his skin. 31 “May God strike me and even kill me if I don't separate Elisha's head from his shoulders this very day,” the king vowed. WEEKLY ENGAGEMENT FEATURE: Do you have a tendency to be quicker to point fingers at others than to look inside your own heart? Additional Resources and Scriptures: 14 Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land. SHOW NOTES: In Podcast Episode 321, “Open Their Eyes and Let Them See,” Kim discusses the uplifting story in 2 Kings 6, as the prophet Elisha continues to be God's messenger. Billy Graham's book “Angels” that you won't want to miss. Our focal passage for this episode is 2 Kings 6:8-23, with 17 as the focal verse: 17 Then Elisha prayed, “O Lord, open his eyes and let him see!” The Lord opened the young man's eyes, and when he looked up, he saw that the hillside around Elisha was filled with horses and chariots of fire. In the 22nd message of our "Unveiling Yahweh" series, we will be looking at the Wisdom of God. Man's wisdom and God's wisdom couldn't be more different from one another. We see wisdom as simply intellect, but God's wisdom is a life of goodness and righteousness – two things which we, in our sinful state, desperately need. Thankfully, God provided the way to come into this kind of wisdom: through the Cross of Jesus Christ. In today's sermon, we dive deep into the wisdom of the Cross as revealed in 1 Corinthians 1. Why does the Gospel of Mark make specific and repeated reference to the compassion of Jesus in the miracle stories? Compassion and the Characterization of the Markan Jesus (Brill, 2024) discusses the function that compassion has in the Markan characterization of Jesus, particularly in how the terminology employed depicts Jesus as entering the suffering of others. In doing so, it underscores how this portrayal is exceptional among the stories of miracle workers in ancient Greco-Roman and Jewish literature. In Mark, this compassion toward the suffering other is a central feature of the kingdom of God, an attribute the Markan audience is challenged to emulate. Jonathan W.
