However, there are aspects of working in dance music that can compound problems and prevent people from reaching out for help. In this episode, Tristan Hunt from the Association for Electronic Music and Matthew Benjamin aka Bushwacka share their personal journey with mental health, tips on how to mentally cope with this pandemic and what needs to be done to create a post-COVID-19 industry where musicians struggle less with their mental health. In this talk, Matthew will discuss how, having spent the past 10 years working in bespoke menswear, the last 3 running his own business with sustainability being a big driver, he decided to take this into school uniforms where the potential for positive impact is so much bigger. At the moment uniforms have a huge environmental impact and aren't good for the kids wearing them, and he’s decided to make a change in that system. Covid isn't just about pivoting, it is about pivoting to business models that are going to help solve the climate crisis that we face, and he plans to take us through the steps of how his business did just that. Matthew Benjamin was born and raised in London. His father is from Guyana, and although his mother was born in the UK, her parents are from Jamaica. With a dad hailing from the Caribbean, he grew up playing cricket and the Windies are his team. He studied Advertising in the UK before going to study an MBA in Luxury Management at the International University of Monaco. His career started in London, working for the largest custom clothing company in the world, Tom James, which led him to come to Dubai, to open and run an office for them, becoming one of the youngest in the history of the company to do so. In 2017 he started Benjamin Siggers, a bespoke menswear business with sustainability at its core. As his passion for sustainability grew, so did his ambition to make more of an impact, which has resulted in him starting Kapes.

We're back for a very special episode of the Finish More Music Podcast, where this week I'm delighted to be joined once again by Matthew Benjamin, (AKA Bushwacka!), and his partner Belinda Matwali. I've got them on the show because I heard about their brand new concept which harnesses the joint power of therapy and meditation to help creatives overcome the challenges holding them back, and live more empowered and energetic lives. I've talked to the power of therapy and meditation here on the show MANY times before, so I was super intrigued to find out what it was all about… And if you're wondering what any of this has got to do with finishing more music - well, it has EVERYTHING to do with it. Because the core principles that Matthew and Belinda teach and are now sharing with the world are principles that can be applied to anyone, but especially beneficial to creative types.

In this special episode we talk to CEO & Founder of Kapes: Matthew Benjamin alongside our very own Seb Francis who is also a Co Founder of Kapes. See the Episode on youtube here: https://youtu.be/SfCS2NNZTfQ "If you want a business that's going to be thriving in 20 ,30, 40, 50 years from now, then you got too, from a logical point of view, get sustainability in there from the start"! As you can see this episode is slightly different for two reasons. One, it's our first face to face interview as both founders are now based in Dubai. Two, Seb has invested in this company and is also the Co Founder working alongside the other Co Founders Matthew Benjamin and Michael Bennett. We learn in this episode all about Kapes and it's CEO Matthew and we see why Seb was attracted to the investment opportunity. Kapes is the world's most sustainable school uniform company. This is their WHY: "Kapes was born from wanting to find a way to fight the climate crisis and revolutionise the school uniform market at the same time. We place sustainability at the heart of everything we do, to help give a brighter future to as many children as possible. That’s also why for every uniform sold, we give a free one to a child in need. This helps children stay in school, giving them a better chance to rise out of poverty. And by teaching Kapes kids about how their clothes are made and how the people who make them are treated, we hope to influence a new generation of conscious consumers. But perhaps best of all, they can see how the simple act of wearing their Kapes uniform is already helping the planet and other kids all around the world." Matt is the CEO and founder of Kapes. He has been working in the clothing and textiles industry since 2010, starting out with Tom James (the world's largest custom clothing company) before launching sustainable menswear tailor Benjamin Siggers in 2017. In founding Kapes, Matt has combined his expertise for finding sustainable textile solutions with his natural passion for helping the next generation. He strongly believes in educating children to be more connected to the clothes they wear, the people who make them and the places they are made. Originally from London, he has resided in the UAE since 2012. Matt is an avid sports lover and a big fan of the West Indies cricket team. Kapes also gives back! They are passionate about helping all children fulfil their potential, so they can grow up to become the future change makers the world really needs. That's why Kapes gives away a free school uniform for every one they sell. Midday theater critic J. Wynn Rousuck joins Tom today with her review of the world premiere of Soul: The Stax Musical, now rattling the boards at Baltimore Center Stage. The production is the directorial swansong of departing artistic director Kwame Kwei Armah, who's stepping down after seven years running the shows at Center Stage. (Check out his May 9 interview here on Midday). With a book by Matthew Benjamin, choreography by Chase Brock, musical direction by Rahn Coleman and a multi-talented 21-member cast, Soul: the Stax Musical tells the story (with renditions of more than 30 songs) of Memphis-based Stax Records and the recording company's role in launching such legendary artists as Otis Redding, The Staple Singers, Isaac Hayes, Booker T ---- The MG's, Rufus ---- Carla Thomas, David Porter, Wilson Pickett, Johnnie Taylor, and Eddie Floyd — singers whose iconic work during the 1960s and 70s laid the foundations for American Soul Music. Their story, and the rise and fall of Stax Records, play out against the backdrop of the evolving civil rights struggle and the growing power of R----B music -- still evident today -- to unite a divided nation.
Tom's guest today is the playwright, director and actor, Kwame Kwei Armah, OBE. He has been the artistic director of Baltimore Center Stage since 2011, but he will soon be moving on. After his final show at Center Stage, which opens tomorrow night, he’s heading home to London, where he has taken the helm of the storied Young Vic Theatre.During his tenure here in Baltimore, he produced three of the best-selling shows in the theater’s history. As a playwright, Kwei-Armah premiered several new works here in Charm City, and he made great strides in diversifying the Center Stage audience. He also oversaw a major, $28 million renovation of the theater’s Calvert Street home, and in his spare time, in 2012, Queen Elizabeth II made him an Officer of the British Empire for his service to drama. His final production at Center Stage -- a world premiere of a work by playwright Matthew Benjamin that Kwame is directing--is Soul, the STAX Musical, It tells the story of Memphis-based Stax Records, and chronicles the rise of artists like Otis Redding, The Staple Singers, Isaac Hayes, Booker T. and The MG’s, Wilson Pickett and others—some of the great and early progenitors of Soul and R----B music. Midday's theater critic J Wynn Rousuck joins Kwame and Tom in Studio A. We streamed this conversation live on the WYPR Facebook page. If you missed that, click here to check out the video.
Just Be aka Bushwacka aka Matthew Benjamin’s story arose from deep within the UK’s underground warehouse and illegal rave scene. Beginning in the 80s and 90s, he found it a space where he had unparalleled creative freedom to explore and develop as an artist. Just Be’s past has now seeped into the present, and as the years have gone by, we’ve seen him push boundaries of house, breakbeat, techno, downtempo and ambience alike. A collection of styles that have since lead him down a path to become the highly sort-after DJ/producer that he is today. Officially, Just Be’s career kicked off with a 14-year residency in London’s legendary The End, the abandoned train tunnel turned nightclub was a leg up in the dance world and propelled him into the international circuit. Since then, his time as a touring artist has seen him headline some of the worlds leading clubs such as Cocoon, DC10 and the now defunct Space in Ibiza. Clubs aside, Just Be is also no stranger to festival life. He’s featured on the dusty plains of the Black Rock Dessert for a sunrise set at Burning Man’s Robot Heart stage, The BPM Festival and many more. Fast forward to the present and Just Be now has 6 artist albums with another one on its way, 120 remixes and 160 tracks. To top it off he also has another EP soon to be released on Get Physical Music. In compiling this bumping house mix for Balance Selections, Just Be waited until the last minute so he could pick his favourite and most recent tracks from his collection, a mix where he’s managed to squeeze 18 tracks into his one-hour set. When asked about his podcast he told Balance ‘I haven’t actually put my own music on this mix. I meant to, but there is so much good music I had to pass on, and I just went with what felt right’ – and as usual, his feeling was spot on.
