Send us a textEver wondered why traditional competency models often gather dust while organisations continue struggling with talent development? The answer might lie in a more holistic approach called "blueprinting" - a framework that's transforming how forward-thinking companies like Haven approach leadership development. This eye-opening conversation with DeanO Giles, Head of Learning and Development at Haven, and Dr Amanda Potter, CEO of Zircon, reveals how blueprints differ fundamentally from competency frameworks by encompassing values, strengths, behaviours and skills while considering both external and internal organisational challenges. For Haven, with 39 unique holiday parks and a workforce that fluctuates from 5,000 to 14,000 seasonally, this flexibility proved crucial. What truly sets blueprints apart is their ability to avoid the pitfalls of "profile matching" - that tendency to create homogeneous workforces by demanding everyone score at least average on all competencies. Instead, Haven's blueprint recognises that different roles, parks and situations require dialling up or down specific capabilities. The results speak for themselves: personalised learning journeys, improved recruitment outcomes, and enhanced succession planning.Perhaps most impressively, Haven has kept their blueprint alive by embedding it throughout their talent cycle, from recruitment to development and performance conversations. As DeanO notes, "It can't just be a poster on a wall" - it must be a living document informing daily leadership practices. Their journey through 14 iterations before finalising their approach demonstrates the care needed to create something truly meaningful.Whether you're frustrated with outdated competency models or simply seeking a more nuanced approach to talent development, this episode offers practical insights into creating a framework that truly reflects your organisation's unique purpose and challenges. How might your organisation benefit from seeing leadership through a blueprint lens?Episodes are available here https://www.thecpo.co.uk/ To follow Zircon on LinkedIn and to be first to hear about podcasts, publications and news, please like and follow us: https://www.linkedin.com/company/zircon-consulting-ltd/ To access the research white papers mentioned in this and other podcasts, please go to: https://zircon-mc.co.uk/zircon-white-papers.php For more information about the BeTalent suite of tools and platform please contact: TheCPO@zircon-mc.co.uk
Send us a textDr. Amanda Potter and guest Dr. Stewart Desson, CEO of Lumina Learning, explore the complex relationship between personality testing, neurodiversity, ethical assessment practices, and strengths-based approaches in the workplace.• The Big Five personality model (Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Neuroticism) remains the most empirically validated framework for understanding personality• Both experts challenge traditional views of personality as static, suggesting a more dynamic understanding that incorporates conscious choice• Evaluative bias in psychometrics can lead to one end of personality spectrums being seen as "good" while the other end is viewed negatively• Profile matching in recruitment creates dangerous homogeneity in organizations, reducing diversity of thought and stifling innovation• The "shadow" concept from Jungian psychology represents disowned aspects of ourselves that we project onto others• Personality labeling (like being called "the creative type") can limit career opportunities and development• Ethical psychometric practice must acknowledge human complexity and avoid oversimplified categorization• The best assessments expand possibilities rather than constraining them, recognizing we can demonstrate seemingly opposite traits depending on contextIf you like our podcast, please click on that follow button and share this episode with someone who would really enjoy it.Episodes are available here https://www.thecpo.co.uk/ To follow Zircon on LinkedIn and to be first to hear about podcasts, publications and news, please like and follow us: https://www.linkedin.com/company/zircon-consulting-ltd/ To access the research white papers mentioned in this and other podcasts, please go to: https://zircon-mc.co.uk/zircon-white-papers.php For more information about the BeTalent suite of tools and platform please contact: TheCPO@zircon-mc.co.uk

Send us a textThe battle to attract and retain high-quality early talent has never been more challenging. With 95% of organizations acknowledging that early career candidates quickly move on when expectations aren't met, understanding what truly drives these professionals has become crucial for business success.Dr. Amanda Potter, the Chief Psychology Officer sits down with Angela Malik to discuss groundbreaking research that challenges common assumptions about what early career talent wants from employers. Their conversation reveals surprising disconnects between organizational perceptions and reality—like the fact that while companies believe early talent demands remote work, 74% are actually willing to consider office-based roles when properly engaged. The discussion dives deep into neuroscience, exploring how the still-developing prefrontal cortex of young professionals impacts their decision-making. This physiological reality helps explain why some accept job offers only to withdraw when better opportunities arise—it's not about negotiating tactics but about impulsivity and emotional responses to uncertainty.Perhaps most compelling is the research on what truly matters to early talent: purpose alignment, authentic sustainability commitments, and meaningful development opportunities. With 88% researching an organization's diversity initiatives before applying, this generation votes with their applications, gravitating toward companies that demonstrate genuine social responsibility. The conversation also tackles the critical gap in line management training, with data showing 82% of new managers receive zero formal training despite being the primary connection between early talent and the organization. This deficiency directly impacts retention, as the research confirms: "You don't quit a job, you quit a boss."Whether you're struggling with early talent recruitment, facing retention challenges, or simply wanting to better understand the expectations of the next generation of professionals, this episode provides evidence-based strategies that go beyond assumptions and address what young talent actually wants. Listen for practical recommendations that can transform your approach to early career talent management.Episodes are available here https://www.thecpo.co.uk/ To follow Zircon on LinkedIn and to be first to hear about podcasts, publications and news, please like and follow us: https://www.linkedin.com/company/zircon-consulting-ltd/ To access the research white papers mentioned in this and other podcasts, please go to: https://zircon-mc.co.uk/zircon-white-papers.php For more information about the BeTalent suite of tools and platform please contact: TheCPO@zircon-mc.co.uk

What does it mean to have Self-Compassion, why is it important? How can we practice self-compassion and what is the impact of this on how we interact and engage with family, friends and colleagues? We look at the research from the most prolific self-compassion author Dr Kristin Neff and her look at Fierce and Tender Self-Compassion and the role of each for helping us to extend compassion and understanding towards oneself in times of suffering or perceived failure, rather than harsh self-criticism or judgment. Why are some people self-critical or prone to self-pity, and how can we help them to move towards having more constructive, kind, yet challenging self-talk?The Chief Psychology Officer episodes are available here https://www.thecpo.co.uk/To follow Zircon on LinkedIn and to be first to hear about podcasts, publications and news, please like and follow us: https://www.linkedin.com/company/zircon-consulting-ltd/To access the research white papers mentioned in this and other podcasts, please go to: https://zircon-mc.co.uk/zircon-white-papers.phpFor more information about the BeTalent suite of tools and platform as mentioned in this podcast please contact Amanda via email: TheCPO@zircon-mc.co.uk.TimestampsSelf-Compassion· 00:00 – Introduction to Self-Compassion· 01:06 – I'm no good at this; you all must suffer!· 02:18 – Defining Self-Compassion· 03:21 – We can't shout at children anymore?· 04:20 – Talking to ourselves· 04:49 – I'm my own best friend… except on LinkedInMy, Myself and the Confidence Machine· 06:07 – The way we were…· 07:01 – Use your words (just the right ones)· 08:10 – Conversations with Children· 09:03 – Pessimism: a Great British trait· 11:12 – Learn to appreciate yourself· 11:54 – Self-pity· 12:22 – A weighty issue· 15:21 – The gym revolutionThe lessons from the past· 16:28 – Fierce Compassion v. What is Executive Presence and how is it different from being Inspirational as a leader? For many years clients have asked our executive coaches to help their leaders with their presence and impact, and to have more gravitas. However, Executive Presence is a bit like the dark science of leadership and it eludes many leaders who want to have presence and make a positive impact but they do not know how. Zircon therefore conducted research with nearly 200 leaders to understand the concept of Executive Presence and how we can help leaders communicate with more impact, gravitas and dynamism. In this episode, Angela interviews Amanda to understand the research and to give some real examples of how coaching clients have developed their executive presence. The Chief Psychology Officer website is now available https://www.thecpo.co.uk/To contact Amanda via LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/amandapotterzirconTo contact Amanda via email: TheCPO@zircon-mc.co.ukFor more information about the BeTalent please go to: https://www.betalent.comTimestampsExecutive Presence· 00:00 – Introduction to Executive Presence· 00:23 – The dark science of leadership· 00:46 – Everybody wants it, but we don't know what it is· 01:28 – Why research Executive Presence?· 02:24 – All the books seem to say…· 03:07 – There's a lot of research on this! What the research says· 03:51 – What is Executive Presence?· 05:05 – My version of events· 05:42 – Influential, not an influencer· 06:33 – THE BIG 5!· 07:08 – Charisma· 08:19 – Confidence· 08:54 – Credibility· 09:33 – The Rise of the Clowns· 10:43 – Gravitas· 11:07 – PowerEducation, Education & Education· 11:33 – Is it critical, or just handy?· 12:32 – Style & Substance· 13:40 – What do I do if I don't have it?· 14:15 – Who has it and who doesn't· 15:29 – We think we have it, but we don't know anyone who actually has it· 16:31 – Everyone can learn, the question is how…In the real world…· 17:22 – The secret formula· 19:49 – Connecting back to the big 5· 20:40 – Go to bed!· 21:06 – The end.

The role of the CEO has changed drastically in the past 20 years, and our expectations of them has both increased and changed. Since the 1990s the median tenure of CEOs has shortened to 10 to 5 years, and "it has become challenging for a CEO to advocate, motivate and embed their strategic direction in this reduced time frame". Self-limiting beliefs have the potential to negatively impact our lives. They can hold us back and prompt us to make fear-based decisions, which can at times, lead to the very same painful experiences they have been created to help us avoid. If we do not take action and challenge these beliefs, we can stay stuck in the damaging cycle. It is important to create empowering beliefs which help us to move forward and accomplish everything we set our mind to achieve. This podcast episode takes a deep dive into self-limiting beliefs, looking at where they come from, why they stick around, the neuroscientific perspective, and a number of strategies to help stop these beliefs from controlling your life. We also discuss how we can turn these self-limiting beliefs into liberating beliefs (thank you Matthew Benjamin AKA Bushwacka for the concept to research). In this episode, Amanda is being interviewed by Angela MalikThe Chief Psychology Officer website is now available https://www.thecpo.co.uk/To contact Amanda via LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/amandapotterzirconTo contact Amanda via email: TheCPO@zircon-mc.co.uk TimestampsSelf-Limiting Beliefs· 00:00 – Introduction to Self-Limiting Beliefs· 00:56 – What are Self-Limiting Beliefs?· 01:31 – I'm limited to what I can write here…· 02:18 – Reality is what you make of it· 02:57 – I no longer smoke!· 04:05 – Healthy Habits· 04:53 – Environmental factorsChildhood days of yore· 05:37 – Think back to your childhood…· 06:56 – Adults can be childish too· 08:00 – Bias Revisited· 09:24 – I'm bad at parties, and I want everyone else to see it!· 10:41 – It runs skin deep· 11:14 – External Locus of Control· 12:19 – When you look in the mirror…· 13:23 – Metrics of SuccessNow I'm at work…· 14:31 – Sounds a bit like Imposter Syndrome· 15:35 – Impact & React· 16:04 – Neuroscience!· 17:06 – Impaired judgement· 18:03 – I remember…· 19:19 – The Three MusketeersTaking steps· 20:06 – Stop!· 22:14 – What is real?· 23:10 – I'm open to second opinions· 24:29 – Take back control!· 25:05 – What a Self-Limiting Belief sounds like· 26:24 – I'm not an influencer, but I do contribute· 27:34 – Summary· 28:49 – You're my best friend· 29:57 – A future exercise· 30:41 – The end.
The Covid Pandemic has been the biggest global stress event since WW2 and has encouraged us as business leaders and HR managers to have a greater focus than ever on the mental health and wellbeing of our people. In this podcast we explore hybrid working, the research behind creating successful and happy hybrid workforces, and how we can get the best out of our people to drive individual and organisational success. We know that to retain and motivate a happy and healthy workforce is critical for success because people thrive when the environment is right for them. Increasingly we are hearing about organisations considering their social responsibility, or sustainability, to achieve this they consider their ESG rating. But what is it? In this episode, we have a guest James Lewry, Director of Social Risks who is an expert in ESG. James has been working for the past 20 years for Control Risks and is responsible for their (Environmental, Social, Governance) strategic framework. With organisations such as Enron or the Lehman Brothers being found guilty of unethical practices such as fraud and contributing to the economic crisis of 2008, ESG seems to be a reactionary result to the ever-changing world and the need for increased social responsibility and sustainability. Attitudes and standards across all sectors of society have to be met at all three levels to survive. What does ESG offer and how does Psychology help? Research suggests that there are many characteristics that contribute to an individual making it to the top of their sport or industry. Less information exists however about the critical elements that make the real difference and catapult people to the dizzy heights of the Olympics, Global Business or West End success. After decades of using personality tools to support assessment for recruitment, succession, development and coaching, in this podcast we are debating the pros and cons of a personality versus strengths approach to assessment. We look at the various personality questionnaires developed since the work of Eysenck, Cattell and Jung, and the role personality has played in helping us understand individual differences. We then look at the move away from personality towards strengths and the benefit of taking a strengths versus personality approach. Finally we look at emotional intelligence, and the state - trait continuum.
