Dave Brisbin 12.15.24 What is it we're supposed to see in Christmas? Talk about a mixed message... Only two gospels mention Jesus' birth at all, and the few details given depict a birth so ordinary to parents so poor that those closest didn't even make room for them in the inn. Enter shepherds and Magi...here the gospels spend a bit more time, because their reactions were anything but ordinary. What did they see that everyone else missed? We only see what we're prepared to see. Impoverished shepherds spending their lives in silence and solitude with their flocks, grew a consciousness that allowed them to see significance in the smallest detail. Magi—wealthy, educated advisors to the king—were used to power and influence. Yet these magi had retained a humility and vulnerability that allowed them to see the promise of their star while still unformed in a poor Hebrew infant. If we're willing, the magi are showing us wealthy, educated ones how to get small enough to see Christmas. Christmas has a way of bringing vague, submerged feelings to the surface the way hook and line bring up fish. We find ourselves grasping squirming emotions that should have nothing to do with what we think Christmas is supposed to mean, what we remember it used to mean. We imprinted the meaning of Christmas through a child's eyes, then subtly mourn its loss each year through adult eyes. Christmas hasn't changed; the possibility of Christmas returns every December. We have changed. We've lost the pace of childhood, forgotten the smallest details. Maybe Christmas-as-remembered happens exactly when we stop trying to make it happen. Maybe when we stop running faster and faster, trying to catch the stored experience of Christmas, meaning has a chance to catch up and catch us. We can't choose the pace of life around us anymore than we can alter the course of a storm. But we can choose our own pace within it. Of course we will always find our God as a child. Unassuming. Unformed and always forming. Are we prepared to see? Every time we meet our God is Christmas morning. The babe is in the manger. The star is in the east. And we are the Magi, and they are us.

In This Episode:Tyler and Mike welcome Steve Mollman to the program. At RMIT, we know that no man is an island and our actions have an impact on others. In quiet and humble ways, Steve is making a tremendous difference in the world around him and the guys pull up a chair and spend some time learning about his rich life. The journey for Steve has been an unexpected life where he has learned that a cute girl in the third grade can become an amazing wife of 47 years, where a driveway conversation with an older brother can become a life-changer, and where Jesus can become the answer for everything. In their time with Steve, so much is learned about finding (and losing) real peace, being complete, seeing God's better plan for us, and the importance of becoming. Steve's advice is to get as close to God as we can and the guys could not agree more. The world needs more guys like Steve Mollman. To Steve and his wife Sandy, thank you for the lives that you live. Who you are matters to the world around you. Keep going!Show NotesQuotes..."Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before! 'Maybe Christmas,' he thought, 'doesn't come from a store. Please enjoy the students' creativity and the speech group's hard work!  *Excerpts from “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”* *Instrumental You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch plays in the background on electric guitar* (Target words underlined) And then They'd do something He liked least of all! Every Who down in Who-ville, the tall and the small,  Would stand close together, with Christmas bells ringing. They'd stand hand-in-hand. And the Whos would start singing!  They'd sing! And they'd sing! AND they'd SING! SING! SING! SING! And the more the Grinch thought of this Who-Christmas-Sing,  The more the Grinch thought, “I must stop this whole thing! “Why for fifty-three years I've put up with it now! “I MUST stop this Christmas from coming! …But HOW?”  And the Grinch grabbed the tree, and he started to shove When he heard a small sound like the coo of a dove. He turned around fast, and he saw a small Who! Little Cindy-Lou Who, who not more than two.   The Grinch had been caught by this tiny Who daughter Who'd got out of bed for a cup of cold water. She stared at the Grinch and said, “Santy Claus, why, “Why are you taking our Christmas tree? WHY?”  And the Grinch, with his grinch-feet ice-cold in the snow,  Stood puzzling and puzzling: “How could it be so? “It came without packages, boxes or bags!” And he puzzled three hours, till his puzzler was sore.  Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before! “Maybe Christmas,” he thought, “doesn't come from a store. “Maybe Christmas…perhaps…means a little bit more!”  And what happened then…? Well…in Who-ville they say That the Girnch's small heart Grew three sizes that day! And the minute his heart didn't feel quite so tight,  He whizzed with his load through the bright morning light And he brought back the toys! And the food for the feast! And he… …HE HIMSELF…! The Grinch carved the roast beast!  *Instrumental You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch finishes*  Jenny: Here's our Letter to Santa. *Letter to Santa with background music featuring bells plays* (Target words underlined) Nanako: Dear Santa, Hey! My name is Michael Hinckley, and I am writing to you with my friends Chuy and PJ. Come to my house! It would make me happy. I know you, Mrs. Claus, and the elves work very hard. I will listen out for you when you say, “Ho ho ho” (three ho's). Perhaps Charlie Brown had it right after all.  Maybe Christmas isn't all that we think it is.  In fact, it's been suggested by several prominent atheists that it isn't anything even remotely like  we would think as the apex of the Church calendar and the center of the liturgical year.  It's been suggested that Christmas and all of its commercial trappings--Santa Claus, gifts, mistletoe, caroling, all of it--are simply pagan traditions that have been repurposed into a semi-sacred amalgamation of truth and tradition.Could it be true?  Is it time to take down the Christmas lights? In today's Kingdom Culture Conversation, Robby Lashua of Stand to Reason helps us to go deep into the roots of Christmas traditions and assists in sorting the good from the bad.  You won't want to miss it!What is this Kingdom Culture Conversation podcast tradition, " 'What About?' Dave Brisbin 12.11.22 Woke up out of a dream in which a couple agreed to adopt triplets, but as soon as the adoption was final, found out all three infants were blind. Doctors told of a procedure that could repair the optic nerves, but no guarantee. Husband was furious, accused the bio-father of fraud, wanted to annul the adoption or add contingency for successful surgery. His wife turned to him—said when you have a baby, you don't know what's coming and whatever arrives is yours and you can't give it back. She reminds him that he's built businesses from the ground up, that he should know that a life being lived without risk is not being lived at all. Then I woke up. How do our minds come up with this stuff? My wife wanted to know the end of the story, but I suppose that wasn't the point. The non-ending leaves the choice midair. What would we do? What place does risk hold in our lives? We're all at risk, even before we take our first breath. The question isn't whether we can live without risk, but whether we can accept the risk of being alive. Security is an illusion we pile around ourselves in money and material until it dawns on us just how fragile we are. Maybe Christmas can help, understood as the story of small, risky beginnings—Jesus born a helpless infant to a helplessly poor couple, risking being small to reveal a big truth. We may be willing to risk big, hoping to acquire enough to become risk-free. But there is no such thing. Human control always fails. Jesus was willing to risk small, a child who never grew out of childlikeness. If we want to find something hidden by a child, we must get on our knees to see the world from a child's height. If we want to find a big truth hidden by a childlike God, we must get on our knees, let humility empty our illusions of control. The story of Jesus' birth is the story of our rebirth. Jesus, born into the vulnerability of a child, risked the smallness of never growing out of it. The story of our rebirth is to risk growing back in.

This sermon is based on Luke 1:46-55. You can also view each week's sermon/worship service on our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5ncsq_QNvCv61bIwKUpP5A SERIES OVERVIEW: Predictable, predictable, predictable—Christmas has become way too predictable. You're going to run around too much, spend too much and eat too much.  There are going to be Christmas cookies (never enough), Christmas carols (just right) and ugly Christmas sweaters (way, way too many).  You're going to watch at least one Christmas movie (“Merry Christmas, you wonderful old Building and Loan!”) and one Christmas special (“Maybe Christmas doesn't come from a store. Maybe Christmas means a little bit more.”). And I could go on, but you get the point. Christmas has become predictable, predictable, predictable—which is odd because the first Christmas was anything but predictable. In fact, it was totally unexpected in almost every way (let's be honest, it was more than that, it was unexpected, unexpected, unexpected). But maybe that is the point. Maybe an unexpected Christmas reveals an unexpected God, a God who is more gracious and good and loving than we could ever have imagined. That's the big idea behind our new Christmas series, The Unexpected God.

Today things seem so out of alignment. Maybe Christmas doesn't look like what you thought it would. Maybe your plans don't seem to be coming together. But one thing is true. No matter what happens around us, our hearts and lives can stay aligned with Jesus and His purpose for our lives. We can rejoice this Christmas season! Everything about Christmas should remind us to reflect on the attributes of Jesus Christ and the fact that He came to rescue us from sin. As we draw closer to Him this season, Christmas will come together. In this collection of talks, we will work to align with Jesus because Christmas is all about Him.

This weeks episode is short and mostly an exert from Kane's kids favourite Christmas Story: How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Suess …So he paused. And the Grinch put his hand to his ear. And he did hear a sound rising over the snow. It started in low. Then it started to grow. But the sound wasn't sad! Why, this sound sounded merry! It couldn't be so! But it WAS merry! VERY! He stared down at Whoville! The Grinch popped his eyes! Then he shook! What he saw was a shocking surprise! Every Who down in Whoville, the tall and the small, Was singing! Without any presents at all! He HADN'T stopped Christmas from coming! IT CAME! Somehow or other, it came just the same! And the Grinch, with his grinch-feet ice-cold in the snow, Stood puzzling and puzzling: “How could it be so?” “It came with out ribbons! It came without tags!” “It came without packages, boxes or bags!” And he puzzled three hours, till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before! “Maybe Christmas” he thought, “doesn't come from a store.” “Maybe Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more!” I suppose some of us still have an idealised vision of the festive season (even the Grinch), but to me the true importance of Christmas is simply to think only of others – how to bring the greatest happiness to others. That is what is important about Christmas. Merry Christmas everyone!

This week's "Christmas conversion": the Grinch. We considered how this classic Christmas story illustrates something Jesus taught. “Maybe Christmas,” he thought, “Doesn't come from a store” / “Maybe Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more.”
