Episode 109: Michael League is the founder of Snarky Puppy, the GroundUP Music label, and the GroundUP Music Festival, and he's one of the most independent minds working in music today. He sat down with us for a deep conversation about how he built the whole thing. This isn't an interview about bass tone or gear. It's about how the entire machine actually works: how a bandleader turns a college project into a five-time Grammy-winning institution, an artist-first record label, and an international festival, all on his own terms, and all without a major label calling the shots. We trace the whole arc. League started Snarky Puppy in 2004 at the University of North Texas because he wasn't getting to play, so he built his own band. It transformed when he immersed himself in the Dallas gospel and R&B scene, absorbing the mentorship of the late Bernard Wright, the "North Star" who reshaped its feel. Out of that came the Snarky Puppy sound and the rotating cast fans call "the Fam," nearly 40 players who launched solo careers like Cory Henry's ("Lingus" is one of the most-watched instrumental performances online), Bill Laurance, Mark Lettieri, Larnell Lewis, Robert "Sput" Searight, and more. Michael pulls back the curtain: how he leads and pays this rotating collective, schedules a year out so everyone gets bandstand time, and sees himself, borrowing from Béla Fleck, as "a leader among equals." We get into why he founded GroundUP Music after growing disenchanted with the label system, how it works as an artist-friendly alternative to majors, and how the GroundUP Festival became a no-headliner gathering that's crossed the Atlantic. We also cover his life as collaborator: his partnership with David Crosby, whose late-career renaissance he helped spark; Lalah Hathaway entering the Snarky orbit; Family Dinner coming together; discovering Jacob Collier early; his band Elipsis with Antonio Sanchez and Pedrito Martinez; his love of the oud; and running it all from a 500-person Roman-era village in Spain. We talk making a living in music, sustainable careers for musicians, mentors and friends he's lost, and AI's effect on the industry. This is for musicians, bandleaders, producers, and label-builders and anyone who's wondered how to build something lasting without compromising the art. If you love Snarky Puppy, jazz fusion, and the real workings of the industry, this one's for you. Subscribe and hit the bell. Lets go! What if the single most powerful thing you could do to save America costs nothing and happens at your kitchen table? Kim is on a whim and she's hitting close to home — the slow death of the family dinner, why the left has been quietly cheering its decline, and why the numbers are finally starting to turn around. From Pizza Hut bringing back red cups and checkered tablecloths to Trump accounts designed to build generational wealth, this segment is a love letter to the values that made America strong — family, intentionality, and the dinner table that held it all together. Kim and Marc dig into the nostalgia we're all craving, the parenting culture we desperately need to reclaim, and whether right now — chaos and all — might actually be the good old days we'll look back on. If you believe the family is the foundation of everything, this is the conversation you've been waiting for someone to have. On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with guitarist and composer Mark Lettieri for a conversation that lives right at the intersection of groove, discipline, and musical curiosity. Mark has spent years carving out a distinctive voice on the guitar—whether through his solo work, his baritone guitar explorations, or his playing with Snarky Puppy and Fearless Flyers—and this conversation is a window into how that voice developed. We talk about what has been a particularly full year for Mark: touring internationally, playing iconic rooms like the Blue Note, and balancing the demands of the road with the rare gift of time at home. For Mark, staying active isn't just part of the job—it's a creative engine. The more he plays, the more ideas emerge. One of my favorite parts of our conversation centers on restraint—the idea that what you don't play can matter just as much as what you do. Mark reflects on the records he grew up listening to, where the entire band worked together to shape a moment, and how those lessons show up when he's on stage or in the studio with world-class musicians. We also get into the nuts and bolts of being a working musician today: communication in the studio, professionalism on the gig, showing up prepared, and reading the room. Along the way, Mark shares stories about his early career in advertising and PR, a surprising David Crosby connection that introduced him to open tunings straight from the source, and what's ahead—including a fascinating upcoming project with sitarist Purbhayan Chatterjee, new baritone-driven material, and the continuing musical adventures that connect his solo work, Snarky Puppy, and Fearless Flyers.Key TakeawaysRestraint is musical power — sometimes the most impactful choice is knowing when not to play.Groove starts with listening — the pocket comes from how musicians respond to one another in real time.Professionalism matters — showing up early, prepared, and ready to collaborate keeps you in demand.Baritone guitar as a voice — Mark has helped expand the instrument's role beyond heavy music into funk and groove-based contexts.Creative momentum comes from staying active — touring, writing, and performing feed the creative cycle.Musical identity evolves — Mark's journey reflects influences from rock, funk, jazz, and beyond.Collaboration drives discovery — projects like his upcoming work with sitarist Purbhayan Chatterjee push his sound into new territory.Music from the EpisodeMagnetar (Mark Lettieri - feat. The family table has always been about more than food, yet it's common to let this rhythm of family connection fall to the wayside in the midst of busy family life.  In this conversation, we explore why shared meals have slowly faded from many homes, the real obstacles that make dinnertime feel difficult, and how simple, nourishing food can still anchor our families in busy seasons.  We talk about flexible from-scratch recipes, rethinking productivity as mothers, and why the table becomes even more important as children grow.  This episode offers practical encouragement for cultivating belonging around the family table without the pressure of perfect or elaborate meals. In this episode, we cover: - How family dinner slowly faded from American life and why reclaiming the table matters more now than ever - The biggest obstacles modern families face when it comes to eating together and which ones are worth pushing back against - Why gathering around the table becomes more important as children get older, not less - A realistic look at simple, nourishing dinners that can come together in 20 minutes without elaborate planning - What it really looks like to keep a “flow” going throughout the day without being tied to the kitchen - How meal prep, sourdough, broth, and slow cooking create flexibility instead of pressure in busy seasons - Setting boundaries around activities and schedules while still allowing teens to grow in their independence - Practical ways to cultivate connection at the table with young children, even when meals feel chaotic - Using stories, shared rituals, and simple questions to turn mealtime into a natural place for conversation and safety - Reframing productivity in motherhood by embracing choppy, interrupted work rhythms and learning how small pockets of effort still add up to progress - Rethinking kids' snacking habits, how constant grazing impacts appetite and mealtime connection, and why “hunger” can actually work in your favor - Why hosting doesn't require special menus or extra effort and how shared meals foster community View full show notes on the blog + watch this episode on YouTube. He also opens up about the spiritual lessons he found in sobriety and why “being the only” has guided his entire media career.Lear more about Andrew's incredible work at www.andrewzimmern.com and follow him on Instagram @chefaz Support our work: buymeacoffee.com/peoplejewwannaknowWhat We Discuss: 00:00 Intro & Episode Agenda05:41 How Margarita met Andrew's childhood best friend 8:16 Andrew's Jewish upbringing 12:08 "I want to be a NYC Jew" 13:07 "In the world of media & brands, it's better to be an only" 14:02 Andrew's staple Shabbat dish19:48 Visiting Kazakhstan27:19 Unsolved mysteries of Bizarre Foods - Rio & Mexico City34:57 How do we stay connected in a disconnected world? 37:40 Andrew's new book about seafood & obsession with service44:02 Closing Remarks & Guest Nomination
