This is a black arts and culture site. We will be exploring the African Diaspora via the writing, performance, both musical and theatrical (film and stage), as well as the visual arts of Africans in the Diaspora and those influenced by these aesthetic forms of expression. I am interested in the political and social ramifications of art on society, specifically movements supported by these artists and their forebearers. It is my claim that the artists are the true revolutionaries, their work honest and filled with raw unedited passion. They are our true heroes. Ashay!  Today we speak to Charles Curtis Blackwell, playwright, artist, poet, about his new work, “When Struggle Gave Improvisation the Blues” in two locations, Sat., August 12, 3-5 PM at the Tenderloin Museum, 398 Eddy Street, SF and Sun., August 13, 3-5 PM at Joyce Gordon Gallery in Oakland.  Featuring Shavonne Allen, Howard Jennings Jr., Greg Pond, Sylvester Guard Jr., Sawyer Arkilic, Barbara Saunders, and Charles Curtis Blackwell. A roleplaying game about independence, control, freedom and compliance. This GMless roleplaying game is designed to explore themes around independence, surveillance, freedom and compliance. It is geared towards dystopian science fiction, social allegory, and psychological drama. Games occur within a society that tries to both undermine our sense of self and prevent free collaboration with others. The focus of our story is a person who is in some way trapped, monitored, and expected to conform to a society they are at odds with. Influenced by fiction in the vein of The Prisoner, Stalker, and Utopia, and real struggles against mass surveillance, the Hostile Environment, and the alienating effects of capitalism. Thank you all for sharing your traditions! Another nice thing to do around this time of year is think of classic, beloved stories. We will be reading excerpts of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and an original Letter to Santa. Please enjoy the students' creativity and the speech group's hard work!  *Excerpts from “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”* *Instrumental You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch plays in the background on electric guitar* (Target words underlined) And then They'd do something He liked least of all! Every Who down in Who-ville, the tall and the small,  Would stand close together, with Christmas bells ringing. They'd stand hand-in-hand. And the Whos would start singing!  They'd sing! And they'd sing! AND they'd SING! SING! SING! SING! And the more the Grinch thought of this Who-Christmas-Sing,  The more the Grinch thought, “I must stop this whole thing! “Why for fifty-three years I've put up with it now! “I MUST stop this Christmas from coming! …But HOW?”  And the Grinch grabbed the tree, and he started to shove When he heard a small sound like the coo of a dove. He turned around fast, and he saw a small Who! Little Cindy-Lou Who, who not more than two.   The Grinch had been caught by this tiny Who daughter Who'd got out of bed for a cup of cold water. She stared at the Grinch and said, “Santy Claus, why, “Why are you taking our Christmas tree? WHY?”  And the Grinch, with his grinch-feet ice-cold in the snow,  Stood puzzling and puzzling: “How could it be so? “It came without packages, boxes or bags!” And he puzzled three hours, till his puzzler was sore.  Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before! “Maybe Christmas,” he thought, “doesn't come from a store. “Maybe Christmas…perhaps…means a little bit more!”  And what happened then…? Well…in Who-ville they say That the Girnch's small heart Grew three sizes that day! And the minute his heart didn't feel quite so tight,  He whizzed with his load through the bright morning light And he brought back the toys! And the food for the feast! And he… …HE HIMSELF…! The Grinch carved the roast beast!  *Instrumental You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch finishes*  Jenny: Here's our Letter to Santa. *Letter to Santa with background music featuring bells plays* (Target words underlined) Nanako: Dear Santa, Hey! My name is Michael Hinckley, and I am writing to you with my friends Chuy and PJ. Come to my house! It would make me happy. I know you, Mrs. Claus, and the elves work very hard. Remember to have fun, and give it some soul!  Lyrics for “Your Love” by The Outfield below.  Josie's on a vacation far away Come around and talk it over So many things that I want to say You know I like my girls a little bit older I just want to use your love tonight I don't want to lose your love tonight I ain't got many friends left to talk to Nowhere to run when I'm in trouble You know I'd do anything for you Stay the night but keep it undercover I just want to use your love tonight (whoa) I don't want to lose your love tonight Try to stop my hands from shaking But something in my mind's not making sense It's been a while since we were all alone I can't hide the way I'm feeling As you're leaving, please would you close the door? And don't forget what I told you Just 'cause you're right that don't mean I'm wrong Another shoulder to cry upon I just want to use your love tonight (yeah) I don't want to lose your love tonight (yeah) I just want to use your love tonight I don't want to lose your love tonight   Lyrics for “Sweet Child O' Mine” by Guns N' Roses below She's got a smile that it seems to me Reminds me of childhood memories Where everything was as fresh as the bright blue sky Now and then when I see her face She takes me away to that special place And if I stare too long, I'd probably break down and cry Whoa, oh, oh Sweet child o' mine Whoa, oh, oh, oh Sweet love of mine   Lyrics for “Livin' on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi below Tommy used to work on the docks, union's been on strike He's down on his luck, it's tough, so tough Gina works the diner all day working for her man She brings home her pay, for love, for love She says, we've got to hold on to what we've got It doesn't make a difference if we make it or not We've got each other and that's a lot for love We'll give it a shot Woah, we're half way there Woah, livin' on a prayer Take my hand, we'll make it I swear Woah, livin' on a prayer Tommy's got his six-string in hock Now he's holding in what he used to make it talk So tough, it's tough Gina dreams of running away When she cries in the night, Tommy whispers Baby, it's okay, someday We've got to hold on to what we've got It doesn't make a difference if we make it or not We've got each other and that's a lot for love We'll give it a shot Woah, we're half way there Woah, livin' on a prayer Take my hand, we'll make it I swear Woah, livin' on a prayer Livin' on a prayer  Jenny: I hope you enjoyed the show. Welcome back to Artbeat Radio!  Today we hear CECA's Star Club! Listen in as CECA shares about how to throw the best Halloween party! Many students participated in the creation of this podcast. Below are the following with media consent.  Andy, Mila, Maria D, Maria G, Johnny, Satchel, Michael, Harry, Jenny, Nanako, Jesus, Juliet, Kyuta, Drea, and PJ.   Thanks for listening and tune in next time! For more information about our organization, please visit our website www.ableartswork.org   Audio Transcription: (Please listen on Podomatic or Spotify to view the full transcript) *Intro music by Artbeat Radio staff*  Music, stories, and more! You're listening to Artbeat Radio, a program of Able ARTS Work.  ALL: Welcome to CECA's Star Club. Jenny: With ArtBeat Radio.  Halloween music intro starts with Jesus' scary laugh.    Mollie: Based on that spooky soundtrack, can you guess what holiday is coming up on October 31st? Jenny & PJ: It's Halloween! Mollie: It's Halloween! Exactly.     Halloween piece composed by Drea on acoustic guitar, keyboard, and Soundtrap loops plays.   Mollie: Today, our experts will tell you how to throw the best Halloween party you've ever been to.   PJ: Now there's a few things you'll need.   Jenny & PJ: Venue, guest list, decorations, activities, food, DJ.  Jenny: Let's get into it! Firstly, you need a venue with enough space to move around. For our example, we will be hypothetically throwing the best party ever right here at CECA.   Mollie: So, what are some good recommendations for a venue, DJ PJ?  PJ: Burgers and burritos.  Mollie: A venue? Not a menu, a venue! Laughs. Why you! So for a venue, do you think maybe a house?  PJ: Yes.   Mollie: A family member's house?  PJ: Yes.   Mollie: A park?  Organ music begins played in a minor key.   PJ: Yes.   Mollie: A bowling alley?  PJ: No.   Mollie: Oh, okay, what about the beach?  PJ: No.  Mollie: Not the beach either?  PJ: No.   Mollie: Okay, so just a house or a park.   PJ: Yeah.   Mollie: Alright. You heard it here first, folks. A house or a park is the ideal venue.   Mollie: Now who to invite? HOW to invite them? Call your friends and family!  PJ: Send out invitations to all the programs: EPI, San Diego, Art Center, and Long Beach. Maybe send out secret invisible invitations!  Jenny: The place has to look FANTASTIC if you are inviting all your favorite people! We would suggest your Halloween party has…  Jenny: …Halloween lights,   PJ: …a spooky graveyard,   PJ: 5 spiders, spider webs,   Jenny & PJ: orange and black streamers,   Jenny: …2 eye balls,  PJ: 4 monsters, and a   Jenny & PJ: …fog machine.  Jenny: Every good party needs some action! That's why at CECA, we would have a costume contest, pumpkin carving, dance party, a haunted house, and spooky movie showings!   Jenny & PJ: Try to guess these famous films by the popular song. We would watch films like…  Theme song sequence plays. Everyone at CECA played their part.   Jenny: The Addams Family  ALL:  Day-o, day-o,  daylight comes and I wanna go home.  Day-isa-day-isa-day-isa-day-isa-day-isa-day-o.  Daylight come and I wanna go home  Jenny: Beetlejuice  ALL:  When there's something strange  in the neighborhood Who you gonna call?  Ghostbusters! If there's something weird,  and it don't look good.  Who you gonna call?  Ghostbusters?  Jenny: Ghostbusters  ALL:  I put a spell on you And now you're mine You can't stop the things I do I ain't lying  It's been three hundred years Right down to the day Now the witch is back And there's hell to pay  I put a spell on you And now you're mine!  I put a spell on you And now you're gone Gone, gone, gone so long   My whammy fell on you And it was strong So strong, so strong, so strong!  Your wretched little lives Have all been cursed 'Cause of all the witches working I'm the worst  I put a spell on you And now you're mine  I put a spell on you And now you're mine  Jenny: Hocus Pocus  Jenny: It sounds like the place is decked out! Won't people get hungry doing so much fun stuff?  Organ music plays in a minor key.  JQ: Oh yes!  PJ: We recommend serving…   Jenny: Eyeball cupcakes, chocolate dirt cups with gummy worms, spooky punch with Hawaiian punch, eyeballs, gummy worms, gummy brains, dry ice, and 5 gummy ghosts in a witch's cauldron.  Mollie : Wow, that sounds like the deliciousness of that food would only be enhanced by creepy music! Be sure to secure a DJ to create the perfect frightening atmosphere. For our party, we would hire DJ PJ and DJ Michael.   Intro to CECA's rendition of “Thriller” by Michael Jackson plays.   Jenny: This is our rendition of “Thriller” by Michael Jackson.  CECA's rendition of “Thriller” by Michael Jackson continues to play.   ALL:  It's close to midnight Something evil's lurking in the dark Under the moonlight You see a sight that almost stops your heart You try to scream But terror takes the sound before you make it You start to freeze As horror looks you right between the eyes You're paralyzed  'Cause this is thriller, thriller night And no one's gonna save you From the beast about to strike You know it's thriller, thriller night You're fighting for your life inside a killer, thriller, ow  You hear the door slam And realize there's nowhere left to run You feel the cold hand And wonder if you'll ever see the sun You close your eyes And hope that this is just imagination (Girl) But all the while You hear a creature creepin' up behind You're out of time  'Cause this is thriller, thriller night And no one's gonna save you From the beast about to strike You know it's thriller, thriller night You're fighting for your life inside a killer, thriller, ow  Halloween music with organ and sounds of dogs barking and cats purring plays.  Mollie: Now not everything has to be in theme with Halloween. Our resident DJs recommend any music that gets people up and dancing! They prefer rap music like…  PJ: Snoop Dogg, Tupac, Biggie, and Wiz Khalifa…  Mollie: and Latin music like…  PJ: Selena, Ricky Martin, and banda music. It is important to note the Cha Cha slide and Cupid shuffle are undeniable American classics.    Lines from “Cha Cha Slide” and “Cupid Shuffle” play on organ.  Organ music continues in a minor key.  Mollie: We would recommend non-scary foods like candy, cake, Tres leches, chicken fingers, French fries, tacos with mole, coke, pizza with pepperoni, and rice.  PJ: Oh, yes!  Mollie: Jenny do you know what you are going to dress up as for Halloween?  Jenny: A cow.  Mollie: Ooo! Excellent!  Mollie: And PJ what will you be for Halloween?  PJ: I wanna be, like… I was SpongeBob last year.   Mollie: And will you be SpongeBob again this year?  PJ: I need to go buy a new costume.   Mollie: And where are you going to buy a new costume?  PJ: Grocer—Ah! I was about to say grocery store.   Mollie: laughs Don't buy your Halloween costume from a grocery store!  PJ: No!  Mollie: You're going to be dressed as a potato sack!  PJ: Target is better to buy Halloween costumes.   Mollie: Right on. On that note, we hope you have a great Halloween! See you next time with CECA's Star Club on   Jenny: ArtBeat Radio!  Instrumental guitar piece plays composed by virtual class.  *Outro music by Artbeat Radio staff*  We hope you enjoyed this episode of Artbeat Radio. I spoke to groundbreaking electro-dub duo Ree-Vo.  The duo from Bristol, England, Andy Spaceland and T. Relly  recorded, produced and mixed their debut LP called "All Welcome on Planet Ree-Vo" ( Dell' Orso Records/ SRD) at Bristol's Christchurch Studios, known as the home of the Mezzanine-era of Massive Attack's most commercially successful album. In spring of 2022, Ree-Vo released a limited 7 inch of the "Spacebox" EP with stunning original artwork by American contemporary artist, activist and founder of OBEY clothing line, Shepard Fairey  featuring remixes by Batbirds (the duo of Joe Cassidy AKA Butterfly Child and Aaron Miller) and NOISE (the musical collective of Joe Cassidy , Shepard Fairey, Merritt Lear and John Goff). Ree-Vo also released "Combat" and a powerhouse remix of this track by iconic UK electronic music producer Surgeon (Tresor Records).T. Relly is Bristol hip-hop royalty- known in the community variously for his links to all of the city's major club nights, his passion and support for the most disadvantaged (through his work with the youth and prison leavers), through to compering stages at St. Paul's Carnival and his seminal 2018 album with DJ Rogue "Let Them Know." After leaving art school  (Where Brian Eno was his examiner), Andy Spaceland got involved in bass music upon moving to Bristol, first with Static Sound System and a collaborative 12" with Rudy Tambala (AR Kane) as Sugarboat Vs Sufi, before his band Alpha signed to Massive Attack's Melankolic label, whilst also become their tour DJ. His collaboration range from Smith and Mighty and Horace Andy to Elizabeth Fraser and Madonna, having released music on DJ Die's label Gutterfunk as White Bully. Andy is also part of 5 Billion in Diamonds with LA Producer Butch Vig (Nirvana, Garbage) and is working on new material with Mark Stewart (The Pop Group) as well as Adrian Sherwood.https://ree-vo1.bandcamp.comhttps://lnk.to/Ree-VoEDDA52

Amazing study this Breastplate of Righteousness Note the Hebrew Prefix of Sarai's name as the breastplate in Is 59:17 - The think about what we know of Sarai(SARAH) and what is taught in the Hebrew Midrash and Talmud... Notes and Links below https://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/112057/jewish/Abraham-And-Sarah.htm We have told you many stories about Abraham, but not so many about his wife Sarah. But Sarah was just as great as Abraham. She had all the great qualities that Abraham had. She was wise and kind, and a prophetess. And G‑d told Abraham to do as she says. So let us follow Abraham and Sarah, as they leave Ur of the Chaldees, where Abraham had been thrown into the burning furnace by the command of king Nimrod, but had been saved by a wonderful miracle of G‑d. For a time, Abram (as he was still called), hid in the house of Shem, Noah's son, for he did not want to rely on miracles in case Nimrod should decide again to take his life. One day his father Terah came to visit him. Terah was a different man now. He was sorry he had brought so much trouble upon his son Abram, and he also knew that Abram was telling the truth about the One G‑d. And so he said to Abram: "My son, let's go away from this country, for you are in danger here. I know that Nimrod has not given up the idea of killing you. I will go with you, too." The whole family now went away: Terah, Abram and his wife Sarai (later, called Sarah), Terah's grandson Lot and his family, and all their possessions, and the many faithful servants and friends who followed Abram from the moment he came out alive from the burning furnace. They all headed for the land of Canaan. On the way they came to Haran and saw that the land was good and fruitful there. So they decided to stay there. Abram and Sarai soon became known in Haran as very fine people. They were kind to all, they were very friendly and helpful. Abram always tried to make peace among people, he taught them how to live happily, he told them to get rid of their idols and demons, and trust in the One and Only G‑d, the Creator of heaven and earth. And what Abram did for the men, Sarai did for the women, for she was just as kind and as wise. Abram's tent was always full of people, who came to refresh themselves, and to listen to his words of wisdom; and so was Sarai's tent always full of women who came to enjoy her hospitality and listen to her, and learn how to live in happiness and peace with themselves and with each other. One day G‑d told Abram to leave his land, and his father's house, and go to another place, so that other people might also learn all that he and Sarai had to teach about the right way of living. Abram took his wife and his nephew Lot and they went to the land of Canaan. This was the land that G‑d promised to give to his children, who would one day become a great nation. Abram wandered about the land, and wherever he came he told the people about the One G‑d, and showed by example how to live a good life. He did not stay very long in one place, and moved farther south, until he came to the border of Egypt. He knew that the people of Egypt were wicked, and when they would see Sarai they would want to take her to their king, to Pharaoh. So he made a large box in which Sarai could hide from the Egyptians. When the Egyptian officers saw the large box they were very curious to know what was in it. They said to Abram, "Everybody must pay a tax for anything they bring into this country. If you have barley in that box, you must pay the barley-tax." Abraham agreed to pay the tax. "But perhaps you have wheat there?" the officers said. "The tax is more for wheat!" "I will pay you the tax for wheat," Abram said. "But maybe it is full of spices? There is a very high tax for spices," the officers continued. "Very well; I will pay you the tax for spices," Abram said, anxious to get rid of them at all costs. Now the Egyptian officers really became curious, and opened the box. They had never seen such a beautiful face before; it was more radiant than the sun which they worshipped. They led Sarai away, and brought her to King Pharaoh to make her his queen. But Sarai did not want to be queen; she wanted to go back to her husband. So she prayed to G‑d with all her heart. Suddenly an angel appeared with an iron rod and began to strike at Pharaoh such painful lashes, that Pharaoh was glad to send Sarai back to Abram. He also gave Sarai his daughter, the princess Hagar, to be her personal maid for the rest of her life. Abram and Sarai returned to the land of Canaan. G‑d blessed them with great riches, so they built inns and hostels on all the main roads, so that wayfarers should find food, water and a place to rest on their way. They charged no money, and all were welcome. Many weary and hungry travelers found food and shelter in these inns. "How can we thank you, Abram, for your kindness?" they said before leaving, and Abram would reply, "Do not thank me; thank G‑d, the Creator of all these good things." And the good Sarai was taking care of the women and children, and when they wanted to thank her for her hospitality, her reply was the same as Abram's: "Thank G‑d, Who feeds and sustains all living creatures." In Beer-Sheba, where Abram and Sarai made their home, they built a very big house, with entrances on all four sides. On each side of the house there was a huge sign: ALL WELCOME! Around the house Abram planted a wonderful garden and an orchard with most delicious fruits and berries. Most wonderful of all was a magnificent palm tree, which seemed to know every wayfarer that came near it. If an honest and good man would sit down under its shade, the tree would spread forth its branches to shield the visitor from the burning sun, or wind. But if the visitor happened to be a bad man, the palm tree would lift up its branches and give the man no protection. But whenever the tree would act that way, Abram would come up to the visitor and show him especial kindness and attention. He would tell the visitor about G‑d, and about G‑d's kindness to all. All the wickedness would melt away in the heart of the bad man, and goodness and kindness would fill it instead. Then the palm tree would spread forth its branches over the man in a friendly way. All the time Sarai was busy with the women folk, and long after all visitors were gone, or had retired to sleep, Sarai would sit up in her tent, making dresses and things for the poor and needy. When everybody was fast asleep, there was still a candle burning in Sarai's tent, where she was sitting doing some hand-work, or preparing food for the next day. So G‑d sent a special Cloud of Light to surround her tent. For miles and miles around, the Cloud of Glory could be seen hovering over Sarai's tent, and everybody said, "There dwells a woman of worth." Abram and Sarai became very famous. From near and far, men and women came to Beer-Sheba to find help, good cheer and comfort, which was given to all, free, by Abram and Sarai. The men and women wanted to thank them, but always they were told to thank G‑d instead. "But where is this G‑d?" they would ask, looking around them, for they only knew idols. "His glory fills the heaven and earth," came the reply, and away went the visitors blessing the G‑d of Abram and Sarai.
