"It's too late" is a feeling, not a fact, and most of the deadlines we're measuring ourselves against were never ours to begin with. In this episode, Brett breaks down why the voice telling you your window has closed is working from bad information, and gives you a three-question "ownership test" for telling a real constraint from an inherited story, so you can find out whether the change you keep circling is actually worth making. What You'll Learn in This Episode Why the feeling that it's too late is not evidence that it's too late — and the specific blind spot in how our minds predict our own future selves The 2013 "End of History Illusion" study and what it reveals about why every age group believes they're basically done changing The difference between a real constraint and a borrowed deadline you absorbed from comparison, family expectation, or culture — and never agreed to Why "is it too late?" is actually two different questions wearing the same coat, and why only one of them deserves a factual answer The Ownership Test: three questions to separate a change that's genuinely yours from one that's just an escape Why the regret of the untried tends to outlast the regret of things that didn't work out The smallest honest step you can take this month to turn "too late" from a story you obey into a fact you check Episode Timestamps [0:00] Introduction — the version of your life you keep circling [2:00] Why "too late" feels so convincing, even when it's wrong [4:00] The End of History Illusion — the 2013 study on how badly we predict our own change [7:00] Borrowed deadlines — where your "too late" clock actually comes from [8:00] Julia Child and the myth of the linear timeline [10:00] Separating real constraints from inherited stories [11:00] Moving toward vs. running from — why the same decision can mean two different things [13:00] The Ownership Test — three questions to run any change through [16:00] Why the regret of the untried outlasts the regret of trying [17:00] This week's smallest honest step Episode Summary There's a version of your life you keep circling back to. Different work, a creative thing you set down years ago, a move, a different way of being in your own days. And every time it comes close, a quiet voice forecloses it: "Nice idea, but that ship's already sailed." Brett opens this episode by taking that voice seriously instead of arguing with it — and then taking it apart. The central claim of the episode is simple and, once you hear it, hard to unhear: "The feeling that it's too late is not evidence that it's too late." Those are two different things, and we habitually treat them as one. To back this up, Brett walks through a 2013 study published in Science by psychologists Jordi Quoidbach, Daniel Gilbert, and Timothy Wilson, called "The End of History Illusion." Researchers surveyed more than 19,000 people ages 18 to 68 and asked how much they'd changed over the past decade versus how much they expected to change over the next one. At every single age, people readily admitted they'd changed a lot in the past — and then predicted they'd barely change going forward. In other words, no matter how old you are, there's a persistent illusion that right now is the moment you've finally become who you're going to be. If that's true at every age, the person telling you "it's too late for me to become someone different" is very likely making the exact predictable error the whole species makes. That's the first thing "too late" gets wrong: it assumes you're finished. The second thing is about the clock itself. Most of the deadlines we carry — established in your 20s, settled by your 30s, peaked in your 40s — aren't real deadlines. They're borrowed ones, absorbed from peer comparison, family expectation, and culture, never consciously chosen. Brett illustrates this with Julia Child, who didn't cook seriously until her late 30s, trained in France at 36, and published the cookbook that made her a household name at 49. Measured against the timeline most of us carry, she'd have been called finished. It would have been wrong. Here's where the episode does its most useful work. Brett argues that "is it too late?" isn't one question — it's two, wearing the same coat, and they need different answers. The first is the constraint question: is this change actually still possible, physically and practically? That deserves a clear-eyed factual answer, not a feeling. The second is the ownership question, and it's the one almost nobody asks: is this change mine? Are you moving toward something that genuinely fits who you're becoming, or just trying to escape something that hurts right now? Two motivations that feel identical in the moment but lead to completely different places — because a change built only on escape tends to rebuild the same problem somewhere new. From there, Brett offers what he calls the ownership test: three questions to run any change you're circling through. The constraint question (what specifically is in the way, and have you actually inspected the wall or just assumed it's there?), the ownership question (finish the sentence "I want this change because ___" and notice whether you're moving toward something or away from something), and the cost-of-not question (what does it quietly cost you in five years if you never touch this at all?). The point isn't to talk you into changing — it's to make the choice yours instead of the fear's. And the research on regret backs this up: people tend to make peace with things they tried that didn't work out. What sits heaviest years later is the door they never walked up to at all. This idea sits at the center of what optYOUmize means by growth — not a checklist of habits or a race against a timeline, but the slower, more honest work of closing the gap between how your life looks and how it actually fits. If this episode resonated, that's the deeper territory to explore next. The takeaway Brett leaves you with: this week, do exactly one honest thing with the change you keep circling. Not the leap — just the inspection. Walk up and touch the wall you've been describing from across the room. Resources Mentioned "The End of History Illusion" — Jordi Quoidbach, Daniel T. Gilbert, and Timothy D. Wilson, Science, Vol. 339, Jan. 4, 2013 — DOI: 10.1126/science.1229294 Julia Child — chef and author who didn't train professionally until her late 30s — en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julia_Child The Shawshank Redemption — referenced for the line "Get busy living, or get busy dying" Frequently Asked Questions Is it actually too late to change your life? Usually not — but the honest answer depends on separating two different questions. Whether a specific change is still physically or practically possible deserves a factual answer, not a feeling. Whether the change is genuinely yours to make (versus an inherited deadline you never agreed to) is the question most people never actually ask. What is the "End of History Illusion"? It's a finding from a 2013 study in Science (Quoidbach, Gilbert, and Wilson) showing that people at every age readily admit they've changed a lot in the past decade, but consistently predict they'll barely change in the next one. The researchers concluded people tend to treat the present as a kind of finish line for who they'll become — a belief the data shows is reliably wrong at every age. How do I know if a deadline I'm holding myself to is real or just something I absorbed? Ask where it actually came from. Most "too late" deadlines trace back to peer comparison, family expectation, or a cultural script (established in your 20s, settled by your 30s) rather than any genuine constraint. A real constraint is something you can name specifically — a dollar amount, a skill gap, an obligation to a real person. If you can't name the specific obstacle, it's likely a borrowed story rather than a wall. What is the "ownership test" from this episode? It's a three-question framework for deciding whether a change you're circling is genuinely yours to make: the constraint question (what's factually in the way, and have you actually inspected it?), the ownership question (are you moving toward something or escaping something?), and the cost-of-not question (what does staying the same quietly cost you in five years?). What's the difference between making a change to move toward something versus to escape something? Both can look identical from the outside — quitting a job, for example — but internally one is a compass and the other is a fire alarm. A change built primarily on escaping discomfort tends to recreate the same problem in a new location, because part of what you didn't like was inside the situation and part was inside you. A change built on moving toward something specific tends to be more durable. Do people regret the changes they tried that didn't work out? Research on regret suggests people tend to make peace with things they tried, even when they didn't land the way they'd hoped. What tends to weigh heaviest years later is the door someone never walked up to check at all — the regret of the untried, which is a distinct and more durable kind of regret. What's the smallest step I can take if I'm not ready to make a big change? Brett's advice is to skip the leap and start with the inspection. Take the change you keep circling and do one honest, small thing to test it this month — a class, a conversation, one experiment — small enough that "too late" becomes a fact you check instead of a story you obey. We keep talking about breaking generational patterns like it's a mindset shift. It's not. It's a subconscious code, written in ancestral, religious, cultural, and societal programming, running your wealth, your purpose, your relationships, your sex life, without your permission. In this episode, we go past the mantras and the motivation and into what actually overrides the code: clearing the mental fog blocking your progress, supporting the body that's doing the heavy lifting of change, and finding the courage to become the one who breaks the cycle, even when it means walking alone for a while. In this episode, you'll learn: Why breaking generational patterns takes more than mindset work — it takes overriding the actual code The "brain fog" that shows up as writer's block in your life, and how to clear it What your body actually needs to support you through deep, lasting change Why courage — not confidence — is the real requirement for becoming the one who breaks the pattern Three simple, often-overlooked places to start todayIf you've done the workshops, the therapy, the journaling, and you're still bumping up against the same old script, this one's for you. What if the biggest thing keeping you stuck isn't fear of food... but fear of what life might look like without the eating disorder?Every month, members of the Eating Disorder Recovery Circle send in thoughtful, honest, and deeply personal questions about recovery. Although each question comes from one individual, they almost always reflect something much bigger. They touch on the fears, doubts, and emotions that so many people carry quietly, often believing they are the only one feeling that way. This month's questions all seem to centre around one powerful theme: trust. How do you keep going when hope feels out of reach? Can your body still heal after decades of living with an eating disorder? Why does the eating disorder always seem to find another reason to wait? And what if you recover... only to discover that life is still difficult? These are important conversations because recovery isn't simply about changing eating behaviours. It's about learning to trust yourself again, even when certainty feels impossible to find. Why hopelessness can feel like reality, and how to keep moving forwards when hope feels impossible to access. How eating disorders gradually lead to isolation, and why consistent nourishment helps us reconnect with other people and with life itself. The subtle ways the eating disorder creates endless reasons to delay recovery, and why waiting until you feel "ready" often keeps you stuck.Whether recovery is still possible after living with an eating disorder for decades, and why it is never simply "too late" to begin.Supporting a teenager who may be showing signs of disordered eating whilst continuing your own recovery journey. One of the deepest fears many people experience: What if I recover and life is still hard? We explore why certainty can become another form of safety, and how recovery gradually replaces certainty with something much stronger—self-trust.If you've ever found yourself thinking:I'll start properly when life feels calmer.Maybe I've been ill for too long. What if recovery isn't worth it?What if nothing changes? What if I still don't feel happy afterwards?...then this episode is for you.Recovery rarely asks us to feel certain before taking the next step. More often, it asks us to choose the next meal, the next snack, the next act of self-compassion, or the next moment of courage whilst uncertainty is still sitting beside us. Over time, those seemingly ordinary choices become the foundation of extraordinary change.Part way through this episode, I mention the Recovery Companion App.Whether you're struggling with eating disorder thoughts, facing a difficult meal, feeling overwhelmed by emotions, or simply need support in the moment, the app is designed to walk alongside you throughout your recovery.Find out more and download the app here:

Peter didn’t know how people would respond to his first sermon, but thanks to the Holy Spirit, it made quite an impact! In Acts 2:37-47, he finishes preaching the first sermon in church history, and the response is IMMEDIATE. Thousands of people are convicted, repent, and put their trust in Jesus. But this moment isn’t just about a crowd making a decision. It’s about what happens when the Holy Spirit transforms a person’s heart and begins building a new kind of community. In week six of our study through Acts, Pastor Kevin Queen explores how the Holy Spirit works through the gospel to bring conviction, lead people to repentance, and draw them into a life of following Jesus. Peter’s message reminds us that the power of the gospel has never depended on human eloquence or perfect words. The Holy Spirit is still changing lives today. What happens when you wake up one day and realize you've been asleep for 20 years successful on paper, but dead inside? For Brian "Dixon" Dixon, that realization came after a near fatal pulmonary embolism. But it didn't have to. In this powerful episode of Productivity Smarts, host Gerald J. Leonard sits down with Brian Dixon, Colorado based adventurer, speaker, and author of the upcoming book Hold My Beer, I'm Going to Change My Life. Dixon shares his raw, personal journey from decades of misalignment, chasing the wrong career, surrendering his dreams, and becoming a "man zombie," to a life changing breakthrough at age 52, when he finally launched a paraglider off Lookout Mountain, a dream he had buried for 25 years. Gerald and Dixon explore the "provider trap" that causes so many men to lose themselves, the small signals of misalignment we ignore until a crisis hits, and the antidote: Hold My Beer energy, a non negotiable, committed launch toward the one thing that still lights you up. Dixon offers a simple "man zombie test" to check in with yourself, explains why most people never recover their fire, and proves that it's never too late to stop talking about the old days and start living the new ones. Whether you're feeling stuck, burned out, or just vaguely numb, this episode will give you the permission and the push to say, "Hold my beer, I've got something I need to do." Ready to wake up? Listen now and learn how one committed launch can start a positive flywheel that changes everything. He is one of Britain's most high-energy comics, but Russell Kane's story begins far from the world he now inhabits: on a council estate, in a home shaped by discipline, class tension and a rigid idea of masculinity. What followed was not a straight line to success, but a series of reinventions powered by anger, ambition and the discovery that books could open doors his upbringing never knew existed. In this episode of Full Disclosure, James O'Brien sits down with Russell to explore how a bright, restless boy from Enfield became a comic, writer, broadcaster and storyteller with an insatiable appetite for reinvention.Russell looks back on a childhood dominated by his father's force of personality, a school life in which fitting in often mattered more than applying himself, and the moment everything changed: a late awakening to education that sent him hurtling towards A-levels, university and a career in advertising. He explains how that same momentum eventually pulled him towards stand-up, where the risk of failure became part of the thrill. They discuss class, reading and the seductive force of self-improvement; the emotional legacy of being loved but not always understood; the tension between public success and private insecurity; and why children's books, biohacking and Shakespeare all make sense within Russell Kane's ever-expanding world.Funny, frank and full of nervous energy, this is a conversation about family, class, ambition and the lifelong process of working out who you are.Find out more about When Brian Met Terry by Russell Kane hereFull Disclosure is a Global ProductionListen or watch every Friday on Global Player, YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts.EXCLUSIVE NordVPN Deal -> https://nordvpn.com/fulldisclosure Try it risk-free now with a 30-day money-back guarantee

Most of us treat prayer like a quick fix or a spiritual magic wand we wave to change our circumstances. We ask God to fix what is around us, and then get frustrated when the scenery doesn't shift. But real prayer isn't about changing the things around you; it's about inviting God to change the things within you. It's a significant renovation that requires a daily reset of prayer to turn off the noise and let God work on your heart. When you invite Jesus to move into your life, He doesn't just visit for the weekend—He lives there permanently. And through daily prayer, He starts the deep work needed to fix it. This process is usually messier and takes longer than you expect, but that's because He is most interested in your inner growth. He wants to address the root of your mental health issues and your relationship issues. God goes where He is invited, so invite Him into the parts of your life you've kept closed. It's time to let the renovation begin.

In this episode, Eddie dives into the idea that real transformation begins in the mind. The stories we tell ourselves, the focus we choose, and the meaning we assign to our challenges all determine the direction of our lives. You can't change your world until you learn to direct your thoughts, silence the noise, and choose perspective over panic. Have you ever felt like your faith was flat, boring, or just not working? Maybe you've heard other people share their incredible stories about Jesus and wondered, "When do I get my own story?" This Sunday, Pastor Steve dives into a personal moment with one of Jesus's disciples to answer the question: What happens when you move from a story about the kingdom to your story in the kingdom? In this message, you'll discover that when you move from a parable to something personal, it's scary, unexpected, and unbelievably rewarding. Steve also shares a powerful truth: following Jesus doesn't protect you from storms; it might even get you in a storm. But the storm is not evidence that God has left you; it can actually be the very thing that leads you into the presence of God Himself. If you're ready to step out of the boat and experience the full, thrilling life of following Jesus, this message is for you.

Join us NOW and save $100 at https://ManifestingMasteryDeluxe.com Serious People Suck at Manifesting (Here's Why)And why silly beats struggle, every damn time.Let me just hit you with this right outta the gate:Serious people don't change their lives. They talk about it. They plan for it.They obsess, journal, affirm, and struggle. But they don't change. Why?Because serious is slow.Serious is structured.Serious is stuck.Let's be real. I've worked with thousands of people over the past 20+ years. The ones who move mountains? They aren't the ones with the perfect planner. They're the ones who get a little silly. They play. They pounce. They invest. They do what FEELS fun, not what sounds smart. You're Always Paying a Price — Are You Playing? Here's the dirty little secret no one wants to admit:You're already paying the price.Every day you don't do what you know works, you're paying. You're paying with your time. You're paying with your frustration. You're paying with your soul. But are you PLAYING?Because if you're not playing, you're not manifesting. You're just hoping.“I'm Serious, Mr. Twenty Twenty! I'm Ready to Change My Life!”No, you're not.If you were ready, you'd be laughing more. You'd be playing with possibilities instead of panicking over problems.See, serious people think struggle is noble. They think the solution is another strategy. They want a checklist, a guarantee, a contract. They treat manifesting like taxes—do it right or the universe will audit you.But here's the truth bomb:"Serious people do stupid things."They pull the wrong trigger at the wrong time. They delete the damn DreamDrivenDay.com site in a panic.(Yeah, that happened. My bad. Best mistake I ever made.)Buy the Pearl, Burn the RulebookMy real mission? It ain't to get you to buy my stuff. It's to get you to buy the Pearl. It's to help you stop being serious and start being sovereign. You stop blaming. You stop hoping. You start choosing. You start moving. When you buy the Pearl, you stop waiting for conditions to change—You become the change. And that, my friend, is when life gets fun again.Fun is the Fertile Soil of SuccessYou remember when you were first dating someone and it was all butterflies and bumpy bits? You were seeing each other. You were going steady. You were playful. You were present. Then things got “serious.”And serious killed the spark.Same with your dreams. You want to bring them to life?Don't get serious—get seen.Don't get ready—get real.Manifesting Mastery Deluxe For the Ones Who Are Done Being SeriousWe just launched something killer:ManifestingMasteryDeluxe.comIt's the OG 90-day course, reborn.New daily videos.Private Facebook group.A TOP SECRET GROUP CALLA real community of movers, not moaners. But it ain't for serious people. It's for the ones ready to play. The ones who are done dabbling and ready to dive. It's for the ones who giggle their way into greatness. So if that's you?Click the link.Change your life.Start dancing with the divine instead of debating with your doubt. If it's not for you?Cool. At least loosen your grip.Laugh more. Love more. Let go.Because this world doesn't need more serious people. It needs more silly souls who actually do the damn thing.

Pastor Matthew is a long-time pastor in the communist nation of Vietnam. Since coming to faith in Christ he's been persecuted by family, neighbors and by police. Matthew came to Christ through the witness of an American missionary mentor. He heard the gospel message, but he also saw the life she lived and the love she showed to the people around her. He couldn't know, at the time, the high cost he would pay to follow Christ in Vietnam. “I didn't know how hard it was to be a Christian in the beginning,” Matthew said, “I chose to become a Christian because God is good.” Pastor Matthew started a church in his home, but police locked the door, cut the power, and told everyone to leave. They accused Matthew of being a spy for the Americans, and said Christianity was a religion only for Westerners. “They are afraid of Christians,” says Matthew. “The power of the authorities is taken away by Jesus.” Ancestor worship is common in Vietnam, and Vietnamese parents and grandparents worry their children who become Christians wont revere them properly after they have died. “The family wants ancestor worship,” Matthew explains, “but we teach young people Who is worthy to be worshiped – Jesus.” Pastor Matthew still encourages young people to respect and love their families. They pray that, as they live out their faith, family members will see a difference in them and be drawn to the truth of Christ. Listen as Pastor Matthew shares about persecution of Hmong Christians and the Vietnamese government's crackdown on pastors. He'll share the most effective ways persecuted Christians are encouraged as they continue to train and equip leaders to stand firm in their faith. He'll also share how you can pray specifically for the church in Vietnam and those who don't yet know Christ. Never miss an episode of VOM Radio! Subscribe to the podcast.
