St. Lawrence of Brindisi (1559-1619) was one of the early Capuchins, the first Capuchin to be named a Doctor of the Church, and the third Franciscan so named, after St. Anthony of Padua, and St. Bonaventure. Just as the Discalced Carmelites were reformers within the Carmelite order, the Capuchins were reformers within the Franciscan order. St. Lawrence was also a popular preacher, a genius scholar, with a command of at least 10 languages, and the leading Catholic apologist of his day. In this episode of Live Free, Pastors Josh Howerton, Carlos Erazo, and Paul Cunningham uncover the real story behind Christmas!
Every December the same claim pops up: Christmas is just repackaged Roman paganism—Saturnalia with a cross on top. But when you actually read what third-century Christians wrote, the story falls apart. Greg walks through the real reason the Church landed on December 25 (spoiler: it starts in Rome around 204 AD), dismantles the Saturnalia and Sol Invictus objections with primary sources, and shows why the gift-giving and trees are Victorian, not ancient Roman. A calm, sourced, charitable look at why the Catholic Church celebrates Christmas when she does—and why you can too without compromising with paganism. This week Granger and AntMan discuss whether Christians should celebrate Easter, ultimately affirming it as a time to honor Christ’s resurrection—something believers should reflect on daily, not just annually. They share personal Easter memories and explore traditions like eggs and bunnies. AntMan explains that eggs were preserved during Lent and later decorated, even gifted by King Edward I. The Easter bunny, originally a hare, became linked to spring, but ties to paganism are historically weak. Granger reads from Exodus 12, connecting the first Passover to Jesus as the spotless Lamb. They emphasize that Easter isn’t about pagan roots or cultural symbols, but about God’s redemption through Christ.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Christmas season often brings messages of Jesus’ birth, but are they connecting with an increasingly skeptical culture? Why should people trust the account of Bethlehem, angels, and shepherds if they’ve been told Genesis is merely a myth? The true foundation of Christmas isn’t in Luke 2 but in Genesis, where humanity’s need for a Saviour began with Adam’s sin and its consequence: death. Bodie Hodge challenges Christians to address these foundational issues, showing how Genesis explains the bad news—sin and death—so people can grasp the good news of Christ’s birth, life, and ultimate sacrifice.
ORIGINAL AIR DATE: DEC 25, 2017There is much discussion online at this time of year as to the presumed pagan origins of Christmas. December 25, we are told, was a date stolen from pagan worship, specifically from the festival of the “Birth of the Unconquered Sun” (Sol Invictus). Should Christians have Christmas trees? Aren't trees pagan objects of worship? How should Christians think about, and respond to, such questions? Do these questions have any relationship to the content of Scripture? Join us for our Sunday morning message in which we discuss a question that many people are confused about. Is Christmas actually a pagan holiday?
Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3). Legal challenges to Christmas and holiday displays have been going on for decades. In order to combat the anti-Christmas sentiment outside of the courtroom, a nonprofit religious liberty organization is encouraging shoppers to do so with their wallets. Liberty Counsel's Naughty and Nice List classifies retailers according to whether they censor or celebrate Christmas — an allusion, of course, to Santa's list of naughty and nice children from the Christmas standard "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town."Urging Americans "to give the gift of Christmas back to the companies who support it," the group says, "If retailers choose to profit from Christmas while pretending it does not exist, we encourage you to politely explain why and then patronize their competitors." The list forms part of Liberty Counsel's annual "Friend or Foe Christmas Campaign," which the organization launched in 2003 to counter a rising tide of opposition to the public celebration of Christmas."The war against Christmas is nothing new, and it is certainly evident today in the form of religious discrimination and hostility," says Liberty Counsel founder and Chairman Mat Staver. "Repressive forces have always had the same goal — to first secularize and then to eliminate Christmas and Christian symbols, celebrations and speech. In America, the First Amendment is a guard against censorship and religious hostility. In the retail market, the consumer can decide to patronize stores that recognize Christmas and avoid those that profit from Christmas while pretending it does not exist."

Is Christmas rooted in pagan traditions? Should Christians celebrate it? These questions spark debate among believers, but the answers lie in a careful examination of history and Scripture. The claim that December 25th is a borrowed pagan festival is challenged by evidence pointing to its roots in early Christian observances and Jewish traditions. Rather than avoiding celebrations due to perceived pagan connections, Christians are reminded of their liberty in Christ, as guided by Scripture. Dr Jonathan Sarfati explores these ideas, addressing misconceptions with logical and historical clarity, and encouraging believers to consider the true significance of celebrating Christ’s birth.

The celebration of the pagan festival of Halloween is now a multi-billion dollar merchandiser's market. Fifty percent of Americans will decorate for Halloween (compared to over 80% for Christmas). It is now the third most popular party activity, after the Superbowl and New Year's Eve. This is always a difficult time for Christians, especially those with children. It is also a dangerous time for some, since many of the seemingly "harmless" involvements associated with Halloween can also be "entries" for the occult, and can prove very tragic for the unwary. There is only one true God (Isa 44:6, 8: 46:9). Thus, only one true religion. Scripture declares "all gods of the nations are idols" (Ps 96:5). All false religion and idolatry is by definition involved in demon worship - whether or not the participants recognize it (Acts 26:18). Hence Paul's concern. The spiritual power and reality behind idols involves demons (I Cor 10:20, Ps 106:37). The Bible tells us to shun occultic practices. This series will help you understand the Pagan background to the modern Halloween traditions practiced today. Originally Recorded 1996 First Video Release: 2022 © Koinonia House Inc. 2022
