Before you focus on goal-setting, it helps to pull back and focus on your overarching life priorities first. This ensures that the goals you're setting are in line with both your long-term vision and core values, rather than being short-sighted or an inefficient use of your time and energy. It's easy for goal-setting to become an overwhelming process. Some goals, especially the big ones, can feel especially daunting or impossible to begin. But the truth is you can reach any goal you set—no matter how big or long-term it is—as long as you break it down into small enough steps. With that in mind we all share some of our goals for 2023 in this episode.   +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ REMEMBER: If you have any suggestions for topics please add in the comments and we will be sure to include them. Is the modern man a hunter or a gentleman? A manual labourer or a technophile? In today's culture the modern man usually is a mix of many things. The modern man must be adaptable. Gender roles are changing and blending together and the stay-at-home dad or part time dad population is growing. More fathers than ever are participating in their children's nurturing and upbringing. The thing is that fathers and mothers come into the parenting process differently though. For the mother, the connection is biological. It's a part of her. Fathering, on the other hand, is less so. Therefore, it's important for men to learn the skills they need to be a good dad. For some guys it's more intuitive, like kicking a football, but most guys need a coach or some direction. I also stuff things up.....frequently.   My many mistakes aside I know what I want my parenting to lead to. My only goal of being a parent is raise a happy and caring human. Raising a child who turns out to be a happy teenager and adult oh and also one who openly cares for his fellow humans. That is what success actually looks like to me.   Over the next few weeks when Ryan & Matty are not available for an episode I'll be running through some of the many things that I think are really important when raising kids.   By things I mean main character traits that I think are really important to try and teach your kids that will give them the best chance of being happy when they are older.   And don't worry if you don't have those traits yourself.....maybe they can help you as well.   Because to me that's all the matters.

As the new year is on the horizon, in this weeks short episode I'm going to take a look at some easy New Year's resolutions that literally anyone can stick to. Even me. Stop gossiping and complaining and whinging. Spread positivity. Also avoid people who have those traits as much as you can. Give one compliment a day. It just might make that person feel a whole lot better. Spread positivity remember. Go a whole day without checking your email. Woooooah hold on there. Seriously? Yes seriously nothing that bad is going to happen, it can wait until tomorrow. Turn off your phone one night a week. Woooooah hold on there. Seriously? Yes, you're basically sleeping on that phone anyway looking at drivel. Drivel you don't need it! Read a book a month That's 12 books in the year. Not really that many, but more than average. Reduce your waste. I read in my sons book that each Australian creates about 1,000kg of waste a year. That's disgusting. You can do better. Drink more water. We are mostly made up of water. Call a friend instead of texting them. Bonus points if you video call them! Try to do it weekly with someone. Go to the dentist I hate the dentist, but your oral heath is very important. Go and get your skin checked Skin cancer is a huge issue in Australia. I get my skin checked every 6 months and try and put sunscreen on every day. Take a break from Social Media Or delete it Or look at it less Or at least just be nice on it and not a troll. Hug your loved ones more. Or kiss them Or have more sex. Start with hugging them so they know you care and go from there. Donate clothes you never wear. And if you're parent donate your kids clothes and their furniture and their pram and their toys. The amount of waste I see on nature strips that could be donated to charities is very frustrating. Most of it is just a phone call away which is also easier than dragging it out on your nature strip. Change your hair Most of us have had the same haircut or a similar haircut forever. Change it. It will grow back or you can cut it if you don't like it. Stretch It Out We spend so much time sitting usually staring at our phones. We are all hunched over. Just add five minutes of stretching each day to your life. This is one I really need to do in 2022. So that's a great place to end this weeks episode. All of these ideas are EASY to do and it will give you a sense of achievement.

This weeks episode is short and mostly an exert from Kane's kids favourite Christmas Story: How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Suess …So he paused. And the Grinch put his hand to his ear. And he did hear a sound rising over the snow. It started in low. Then it started to grow. But the sound wasn't sad! Why, this sound sounded merry! It couldn't be so! But it WAS merry! VERY! He stared down at Whoville! The Grinch popped his eyes! Then he shook! What he saw was a shocking surprise! Every Who down in Whoville, the tall and the small, Was singing! Without any presents at all! He HADN'T stopped Christmas from coming! IT CAME! Somehow or other, it came just the same! And the Grinch, with his grinch-feet ice-cold in the snow, Stood puzzling and puzzling: “How could it be so?” “It came with out ribbons! It came without tags!” “It came without packages, boxes or bags!” And he puzzled three hours, till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before! “Maybe Christmas” he thought, “doesn't come from a store.” “Maybe Christmas...perhaps...means a little bit more!” I suppose some of us still have an idealised vision of the festive season (even the Grinch), but to me the true importance of Christmas is simply to think only of others – how to bring the greatest happiness to others. That is what is important about Christmas. Merry Christmas everyone!

    Dealing with disappointment!

Often our expectations don't align with real life. The result is disappointment.   Remember when you were a kid and lined up for an hour to go on a ride at a theme park or when you lined up to meet someone you looked up to or even that restaurant you really wanted to eat at or movie you heard great things about.   It's likely that you will have felt some level of disappointment with the end result as the experience that you had built up in your head was so much better than real life.   Disappointment is a normal part of life and everyone will experience it to some extent in their life.   In 2020 we canceled too many things. Too many birthday celebrations were virtual or drive-by. Too many holidays and other occasions were quiet, or done over zoom.   In other words, 2020 was a year marked by life's disappointments.   2021 hasn't been much better.   Hell August 4th this year was a huge disappointment.   In Victoria we went from having zero new COVID cases and expecting to get back towards COVID normal, to instead barely more than 24 hour later being back in lockdown.   It's now 57 days later and yesterday we had over 1,400 new cases and our only real way out is vaccination. Talk about disappointing.   Personally I'd also sold a business not long before this and was looking forward to the little bit of free time that this would mean.   Yes, I've had plenty of free time rattling around my 5km radius for the allotted time, but it's not really the same.   It's not fun to be disappointed, but equally you should not let it linger.   While it's absolutely OK to take some time in your disappointment, try not to focus on your negative emotions for too long.   Spending too much time and energy on your disappointment will have a detrimental impact on your mood and mental health.   Ask yourself, ‘Will this matter one year from now? A week? One month?' A lot of the time asking this question will bring you back to reality.   Far too many people, when faced with disappointment, tend to attribute negative life events to their personal failings. They resort to obsessional self-blaming, as they feel ashamed or humiliated of not measuring up to the image of themselves they have in their own head.   As a result, they direct their anger inward, to themselves.   It may prompt them to say that they deserved it, that they were not good enough.   Other people, will direct their anger outward toward others, to people who didn't fulfill their expectations. It will contribute to feelings of spite and bitterness.   Unfortunately, both emotional reactions keep the person stuck in a spiral of disappointment and often this disappointment can turn into a lingering sadness — a feeling of loss, of being let down.   So what are the alternatives?   You can also view the disappointment as something you can learn from. You can consider whether there is something you could do differently next time.   When we catch ourselves thinking negatively, we should redirect our energy and focus on positive solutions.   You may need to do a bit of positive self talk or some meditation or some journaling. You may need to kick the negative people around you to the curb for a while and just surround yourself with positive people.   A big one for me is to look after your physical health.   Whenever I have had something stressful happen or a big disappointment I've always tried to prioritise my physical health as it has a big positive effect on my mental wellbeing.   I generally do some level of exercise every day (literally 7 days a week) not because I'm some vain bastard (you should see my hair and facial hair at the moment) but because it honestly it just makes me feel better.   It's a way I cope with life and the inevitable stress and disappointment in it.   It's much healthier than the red wine and dim sim method I probably used 10 years ago.   The point is that experiencing disappointment is often outside your control, but the way you deal with it is not.   You need to find your way.   And if you can learn a way to deal with disappointment and emerge from it you build resilience in its wake.

My sister had been showing her girls some of her things and she sent me through a story she wrote in Grade 3 (back when she would have been around 8 years old and I would have been about 10). It's a story, but it actually happened. It got me thinking about the parenting in the 1980s and today and taking what works from both. If you can mix in some of the vast social and parenting knowledge we have in 2021 with giving your kids the room to try, fail, and try again while you support them 1980's style then you're well on your way to good parenting in my opinion. ++++ Is the modern man a hunter or a gentleman? We are easily distracted,  We are disheartened when things go wrong and sometimes we have little sense of purpose or goals.    Grit or guts means you can make it through these tough situations, ideally with a smile on your face.    You have the confidence and perseverance to pick yourself up when you're down.    With Matty and Ryan on the beers Kane works through some steps to being more resilience and building resilience in children. ++++ Is the modern man a hunter or a gentleman? It may be stress of a COVID lockdown or anxiety about getting the vaccine.   There are lots of different triggers for stress out there.   Over time the adrenalin released by stress hormones creates a continued state of vigilance with damaging physiological consequences.   Stress can actually kill you indirectly as it is known to lead to increased heart rate, cardiovascular problems, breathing difficulties and high blood pressure.   All key contributing factors to death.   So how can you counter stress?   Kane goes through some strategies he has used when he has encountered stress.   ++++ Is the modern man a hunter or a gentleman?
