Join Crystal and Heather as they talk to, special guest Michelle Dutro. Michelle Dutro grew up in Southern California, served in the military (Air Force), followed by a couple of decades living in Seattle. After several years of corporate life, she questioned her purpose, and ultimately her legacy. Having a strong drive to help others, but just not sure exactly how, all she knew was she wanted to make a difference. Therefore, she decided to become a firefighter/EMT. While it was an amazing opportunity to help others in life-threatening situations, she realized her heart was in helping people prevent emergencies, rather than responding to calls when it’s often too late. This led her to make the decision to transition into spending the next 15 plus years working in the field of preventive medicine. After many years of training and education in various areas of study, it became obvious that stress has the most negative impact to overall health and wellness. It is for this reason that for over decade Michelle has specialized in the field of stress reduction, with a focus on PTSD. She opened the Inner North Star Retreat Center in Julian, CA in 2018 for personalized retreats with a focus on mindfulness and meditation. That same year she received her non-profit status to offer no cost PTSD retreats for Veterans and First Responders. Both sides of the retreat center are centered on creating a compelling future that you were meant to live. www.innernorthstar.com

Our mantra is "you can't help others until you help yourself". And that is exactly what our guest Michelle Dutro is teaching those with PTSD at her retreat for Veterans and First Responders called Inner North Star. Michelle is an Air Force Veteran, firefighter/EMT, and mental health clinician. In this episode, she explains why the decision to CHOOSE to be in the best mental health state possible is so important; for not only healing, but continuing to grow in your role in providing help to others in your own life. I highly enjoyed chatting with Michelle and she provides a no-nonsense philosophy to mental health! Michelle Dutro is the host of The Game Changer Podcast and creator of Inner North Star.com. She describes herself as being inspired by people who are willing to risk it all to pursue their dream, stand up for what they believe, or go above and beyond to help another. Like me, she has a natural curiosity about the mindset of these kinds of people and she loves to discover what sets them apart. She refers to these kinds of people as “Game Changers” and by reaching out to them, she’s able to share the stories of their challenges, their successes and most importantly their “why” behind what they do. Here are a handful of key thoughts I took from the conversation with Michelle: 1. Structure and Discipline with Creativity. You must have structure and discipline enough to complete and share your creative gifts. 2. The Snow Globe analogy. Everyone needs time to just “be” with zero input, and let things settle before deciding on the next step. 3. Making friends with challenge. 4. You don’t get what you want. You get what you are. ©2016 Kevin Bulmer Enterprises

It helps us to realize our thoughts that impact our breathing, when we're under stress. [Our breathing becomes] very shallow and rapid. When we control our breathing we control our body; we control our thoughts. It's a connectedness that we're all one, we're all whole, we are connected to the rest of the world in that same way. In this episode, I welcome Michelle Dutro to the show. Michelle was a military veteran by the age of 22 and she joined the fire department at the age of 35.  Michelle has always been determined to pursue her dreams. She has spent more than a decade working in a field of preventative medicine which has spurred her to emphasize the importance of good health. Her goal is to inspire and motivate others to pursue their passions in life.    On the way home from school in 7th grade, Michelle saw someone being bullied. She believes that witnessing someone being treated badly and not do anything about it is the most intolerable form of evil she can imagine. She vows never to allow another person go through what that person went through. It is her mission to be a voice for those who don’t have one. Playing Small Moment Michelle doesn’t feel she has a small moment; she just wants to help people find their special gift and follow their special purpose. She has been that way her entire life. She believes that not following a purpose in life is not an option. She helps people to remember what things they loved doing before society, parents, or culture got in the way. The Wake Up Call For Michelle, there was no landmark epiphany. She lives in a constant state of evaluation about how she can do better and how she can do more. She decided to become a firefighter because she felt it was the most effective way for her to help those who need it most. Analyzing how she handled emergencies led her to educate people on how to avoid emergencies in the first place. Michele knew her work should focus on prevention.    Style of Leadership BOLD and confident. Michelle doesn’t mince words and she doesn’t hold back. She says there is a very big difference between being nice and being kind. She defines kindness as seeing someone for who they truly are and then helping them become who they need to be. Placating people through being nice only enables them to stay where they are or to play small. Current Business Challenge Michelle’s biggest challenge is the linear thinking required for paperwork. She is aware that being organized is not her gift and often finds herself putting these types of tasks on the back burner.     What Are You Excited About? Michelle is excited to launch her online course and new book. It’s a life reboot for people who feel stuck or uncertain about why they are here in this life.  Book to Develop Leadership Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl Advice For Younger Self No matter what, believe that anything is possible. Don’t push away emotion.  Inspirational Quote “Your beliefs become your thoughts. Your thoughts become your words. Your words become your actions. Your actions become your habits. If you have followed my podcast or my blog for any period of time, you know I frequently speak about eliminating chaos from your life, and how to create a more fulfilling life. In today's podcast I am once again interviewed by my good friend Tammy Drechsler. In this conversation we talk about both topics and the one thing that is most impactful to them both; honesty. The simple reality is you can't have more peace or more meaning without first getting very honest with yourself about what truly matters to you. If you want to really understand what matters the most, pay attention to the actions you take, as it's not what you say, rather what you do, that points to what you most value. A good first step in shifting your priorities is to pay attention to the language you use around what you are doing, and why you are doing it. From this point, you can create a life that you HONESTLY love! For The Game Changer Podcast: Thanks for Listening and Subscribing! This purpose can be seen in what you are passionate about. For those people who don't know what that is, stop and think about how you spend your free time. What do you choose to read, listen to, or watch? What conversations do you most find yourself in? Now, considering we were all given the gift of free will, you have the choice to decide at what level you are going pursue this passion. Are you going to draw on cocktail napkin whenever you are at happy hour? Are you going to paint pictures for friends and family? Or are you going to be the next Picasso? You see the passion is there in each; it's up to you to decide what to do with it. The best part of this is we get to decide every day whether we are going to live a level 1 or a level 10 life. The difference between a life that has no meaning and one that is completely fulfilling is directly tied to the degree to which you are living into your purpose, your passion, your calling. And if it's 'hey, the electricity's turned off for a month so I guess I'm gonna get little hand warmers and a thicker blanket, but nothing's gonna stop me' - that's when you know you've hit your 'why'. Nothing will stop you. And when I say no matter what, we don't craft up a plan B. Failure is not an option, but you have to be there. And you realize this is a soul calling. And it gets to the point that you can no longer compromise that, or settle for anything less. And that vision, when things get tough, that's what will pull you through." - Michelle Dutro Michelle Dutro is a Certified Biofeedback Specialist/Instructor and Supervisor.  Certified as a Life Coach in Strategic Intervention, a Wellness Consultant, Hypnotherapist, Yoga and Meditation Instructor, and passionate advocate for the humane treatment of all beings, especially those without a voice. If talking to yourself is “odd” then get ready for an odd episode.  This is me interviewing myself – speaking on topics that I feel are the foundation of Goal Setting which are incredibly important, as we move into 2016.  This topic is very near and dear to my heart and has been for decades.  I take goal setting or better said, focused intention very seriously.  Every major life change I have had, has come from thoughtful contemplation about the ideas that I will cover in this episode. This being a Mindset episode, I talk about these practices and concepts, and my view on each of them: Honesty with yourself: You can not create a realistic goal without being completely honest about where you are right now. Your surroundings: Who are you intentionally surrounding yourself with and why?  Your chosen friends have a tremendous impact on your life – choose wisely. Being present: Wherever you are… be there.  When you are with someone, drop everything else, look them in the eyes and really listen to what they are saying.  Show up with 100% of your being in everything you do. Eliminating worry: This is a big one for me, as it truly is a spirit boat anchor. The value of challenges:  Every single person who has ever had a life of significance was riddled with challenges.  Any good story has plenty of them.  Challenges are there to help us grow, become stronger, and learn something that will be imperative in order for greater success (in any area of life). Gratitude: The foundation of every experience in our life.  If you take away nothing else, and only incorporate ONE new thing next year, I hope it’s, Gratitude for ALL things. This is truly a Game Changer.   Thanks for Listening and Subscribing! Our show today features a media spotlight on the Podcast, The Game Changer, hosted by Michelle Dutro. We will hear the stories of their challenges, their successes and most importantly their “why” behind what they do. It is my hope that you are inspired by people who are just like you, who are making a difference. You will see that it doesn’t take a million dollars, quitting your job, or knowing Bill Gates in order to contribute in a significant way. You can do amazing things from where you are right now. And if there are beliefs that are holding you back, hopefully you will see that some of these people had doubts at one time as well. We will see what it takes to push through those fears and confidently swim in your own direction.
