We live in a time of constant motion, where reaction often outruns reflection and clarity can feel just out of reach. In his book On Mindful Democracy, Jeremy Engels invites us to see democracy not as a system we inherit, but as a practice rooted in attention, compassion, and how we show up for one another each day. This conversation is a reminder that when we pause long enough to let the snow globe settle, we can see more clearly, and perhaps, see each other again.Featured in 'The Solidarity Edition' of AwareNow Magazine: www.awarenowmagazine.comGuest: Jeremy EngelsHost: Allié McGuireMusic by: Roie ShpiglerProduced by: AwareNow Media

The eye as a snowglobe: Uveitis for neurologists

Eye pain can be a source of serious concern for patients, bringing worries about their eyesight. While uveitis is far from the only source of ocular pain, in many presentations of the condition it is a feature. In this Editors' Choice podcast, ophthalmic surgeon Mr. Harry Petrushkin¹ ² and neurologist Dr. Ruth Dubson³ join forces to explain a comprehensive approach to uveitis treatment. Host Dr. Amy Ross Russell leads the way through a refresher on eye anatomy and the spectrum of uveitis patients neurologists are likely to encounter. These are often the more serious of patients, requiring good working relationships across disciplines. They also speak of the overlap with neuroinflammatory presentations, and the eye manifestations seen in conditions like multiple sclerosis and sarcoidosis. varandra, glada över deras lilla äventyr.En: Lars and Freja smiled at each other, happy about their little adventure.Sv: Fastän lösningen inte var så grandios som Lars hade hoppats, förde det dem närmare varandra och skapade nya vänskapsband bland alla freelancerna.En: Although the solution wasn't as grand as Lars had hoped, it brought them closer together and created new bonds of friendship among all the freelancers.Sv: Från den dagen tog Freja upp Lars idé om att ibland acceptera det oväntade, medveten om att livet inte bara handlar om planlagda rutiner, utan också om att växa genom små, oväntade glädjeämnen.En: From that day on, Freja embraced Lars's idea of sometimes accepting the unexpected, aware that life is not just about planned routines but also about growing through More than a decade ago, I wrote The Snow Globe, a middle-grade novel about courage, belonging, and discovering strength you didn't know you had. I wrote it before I had kids, before many of the leadership experiences that now shape my life. For years, the manuscript sat quietly as my life changed around it.Two years ago, I was ready to self-publish. The book had been edited. The cover was complete. And then someone asked me a single question: Is it your best work? The honest answer forced me to slow down, revisit the story, and give it the time it deserved. In this episode, I share the long arc of writing The Snow Globe, the decision to wait instead of rushing toward closure, and what finishing well has taught me about leadership, integrity, and honoring creative work — especially at the end of the year.If you've ever carried a project longer than you expected, this episode is an invitation to reflect on what it means to finish with intention. If you'd like to check out The Snow Globe, you can find it here.If you'd like to follow along behind the scenes, you can find me on Instagram at @erinpatriciageiger.

In this episode of The Writing Life, poets Erica Hesketh and Jenny Pagdin share insights into the poetry of motherhood, and how they each share their ‘emotional truth' in their writing.   Erica Hesketh is a poet and editor, originally from Japan and Denmark, now based in London. Her poetry has been commissioned by the Royal Festival Hall, Spread the Word and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. From 2016 to 2024 she was Director of the Poetry Translation Centre. Her debut collection, In the Lily Room, is published by Nine Arches Press and explores early motherhood. Her poem ‘Night feed' was highly commended in the 2025 Forward Prizes.   Jenny Pagdin wrote The Snow Globe (Nine Arches 2024) and Caldbeck (Eyewear, 2017), about postpartum psychosis. The Snow Globe won the East Anglian Book Awards poetry category in 2024, and her work has been shortlisted for the Mslexia pamphlet competition, highly commended and shortlisted for the Bridport Prize, and longlisted for the Rebecca Swift Foundation's 2018 Women's Poetry Prize.   Together, they reflect on how their experiences of motherhood have shaped their poetry and the creation of their debut collections. Touching on everything from how poetry fits into their lives as working mothers to the power of connecting with others by giving voice to experiences of illness and mental health, this is an honest and insightful conversation about recovery, language, and craft.

In this episode, he shares how psychedelics are being used not just to treat mental health conditions, but to enhance leadership, decision-making, and personal clarity. We explore the science of neuroplasticity, the legal gray zones, and the risks of skipping the prep work. For high-performers feeling stuck or burnt out, Paul outlines a roadmap grounded in safety, structure, and serious self-inquiry. Whether you're curious, skeptical, or somewhere in between, this conversation is a guide—not a push—for what transformation can look like when approached with respect.Key Highlights of Our Interview:Why He Started Third Wave—and Why His Dad Tried It Too“My dad once told me he hadn't been that disappointed since his brother died. Years later, I guided him through his first psilocybin journey.”From Microdosing to Life Design“Microdosing isn't about escape—it's about reprogramming. You still have to show up and do the hard stuff.”Psychedelics as a Skill, Not a Fix“Just like cooking or martial arts, this is a practice. You get better with time, feedback, and intention.”When Leaders Feel Stuck, This Is the Pattern Breaker“For many execs I work with, it's not about trauma—it's about lost clarity, emotional fog, or a 360 review that hit too close to home.”Start Low, Go Slow: Why That Advice Matters More Than Ever“You can always take more—you can't take less. Begin with microdosing. Build awareness before diving deep.”The Snow Globe and the Ski Slope: Two Metaphors That Explain It All“Think of psychedelics as shaking up the snow globe. Or fresh powder on a slope—you're no longer stuck in someone else's ruts.”Legal Doesn't Mean Safe. Illegal Doesn't Mean Dangerous.“Psychedelics became illegal for political—not medical—reasons. But that doesn't mean you can skip the legal risks.”Where It's Legal—And What to Do If It's Not“Colorado. Oregon. The Netherlands. Costa Rica. Go where it's legal. Work with a guide. Respect the law.”The Five Elements of a Safe Psychedelic Journey“Assessment. Preparation. Facilitation. Integration. Microdosing. Miss one, and the whole thing can derail.”Why No One Should Be Talked Into It“Don't do it for your friend, your spouse, or your coach. You have to want this for you.”_____________________Connect with us:Host: Vince Chan | Guests: Paul Austin  --Chief Change Officer--Change Ambitiously. I met Sal through an organization called Dancing Disciples, that gives free hip hop class on Fridays! Sal killed it in the cypher that night, and it's not surprising since he's been freestyle dancing since he was a kid, performing and competing with it too! It wasn't until a couple years ago, though, that he decided he wanted to learn how to pick up choreography as well. He discovered Athletic Garage and started going to hip hop classes there as well as taking private lessons. He's also been challenged by his teachers to make up his own choreography and figure out the counts too! Class was frustrating for him at first, not being able to remember the moves, but now Sal knows how to groove through it and just keep coming back to improve. Sal is taking class almost everyday, at other studios too like Snowglobe, and he has a performance at Disney California Adventure coming up this summer! Learn all about how he got into that and more by checking out this episode. :)Follow our dance journeys on Instagram: @phatspeedo_@DanceJourneyPodcast@TracyinLA
