On this special edition podcast, we are joined by our great friend Christy Walcott, Vice President of all things FUN at the Gaylord Michigan Tourism Bureau.Christy is actually the Director of Marketing and Communications for the Bureau, which really does mean that her job involves taking visitors out to show them the very best that Gaylord has to offer. It's why we try to have her on as much as we can, because she not only lives in Gaylord, she gets on out there and experiences all the things that this fun Northern Michigan town has to offer. She's been on the show before, sharing everything from summer sink hole lakes for swimming to best places to paddle board. One thing she always has in spades is local restaurant recommendations, and more often than not, very specific DISH recommendations from said restaurants. Christy not only wants you to visit, she wants to make sure you try the best things on the menu. On this episode of Behind the Mitten, Christy gets extra specific for this 2026 winter season, which is turning out to be a bang up one for the Gaylord region, with oodles of snow piling up all over, creating amazing conditions for all the outdoor winter activities you can imagine. Gaylord is a mecca for snowmobilers, who can use the town as their base, and then explore all of northern Michigan via sled. Christy shares a fun itinerary for a, now get this, snowmobile foodie tour.Very cool, right? Christy takes us to places in town like Big Buck Brewery and Benethums, as well as places outside town, like The Thirsty Sturgeon and Paul's Pub, which is located just off Trail #403.You certainly don't have to travel via sled to experience all the great places that Christy suggests, you can also hop in your car and drive. But there is something both magical and downright wild about snowmobiling, so if you can give it a go, we highly recommend. There are places where you can rent snowmobiles, and all the gear too, in the Gaylord area. We've done this before and had an absolute blast. Let's just say that NEW snowmobiles are nothing like OLD 1980's snowmobiles, and we very much like the heated seat and handles. We also really recommend the Gaylord Tourism website, all the information that you need to explore this area can be found here.

This week, we visit Marquette Michigan, a gem no matter the season. This fun town nestled on the shores of Lake Superior is home to Northern Michigan University and really knows how to embrace winter with a flurry of activities and festivals. We kick off the show with Susan Estler from Travel Marquette who gives us an overview of winter in MQT, and then quickly gets down to business with what we love the most, where to eat. You need to warm up at some point, right? And Marquette has an incredible restaurant scene to check out, from funky dive bars with great burgers (yes, we are looking at you Pat's Bar) to hip spots like The Delft Bistro, where you'll feel like you might be in a slightly larger city. Of course, we'll gush on and on about one of our favorites, and a must stop when in town, delicious Lagniappe, which is yes, located in a basement downtown. First and foremost, you don't want to miss the very popular (and fun!) Winterfest and Rail Jam which is happening January 31 to February 1, 2026. Billed as a "marathon of mountain culture", this weekend will feature ski races, live music, and a freesyle rail jam. A highlight is the Torchlight Parade happening Saturday night, please be sure to register at the front desk so you can get your glow on. Also, don't miss FRESH oysters apres ski at the famous T-Bar, you probably won't be finding those anywhere else in the Yoop this weekend. Sunday, enjoy more skiing and racing.Orignally opened in 1957 as Cliff's Ridge, Marquette Mountain Resort is beloved by both locals and visiting tourists alike. In winter, enjoy skiing and snowboarding via three chair lifts and a rope tow. In the warmer months, bring your mountain bike and explore the trails, or just strap on your hiking boots. Anyway you experience MMR, you are sure to have a great time. https://www.marquettemountain.com/Next, Jason Rolling, Race Director for the Noqueamon Ski Marathon, joins us to explain cross country ski racing to us, since there are several kinds of races you can paricipate in. We found this extra helpful, because now we'll sound like we know what is going on during the Winter Olympics. Thank you Jason! Honestly, this race sounds like it's quite the experience. Jason also shares how important community support is for this race, from the volunteers, to local landowners granting permission for racers to cruise through their private land for the race. Just another reason to love our Yoopers. And, lookin ahead, the 2027 Noquemanon Ski Marathon will be held January 22nd-23rd, so you best start your training now. Finally, we meet Todd Poquette, Director of Adventure forthe Polar Roll, which is the largest fat tire bike race in Michigan, and part of the Great Lakes Fat Tire Series. There are three different races you can participate in on February 21, and we'll just leave you with the race's tag line...."it gets worse, before it gets better". Sounds like this one is for those with experience on the fat tire, we will be at the mass start, which sounds like it might be a little bit wild and right up our alley. We love Marquette, and hope that you do too. If so, be sure to check out the Respect Marquette pledge, and let's keep it amazing for all of us.

We head back to our beloved Mackinac Island this week, for our annual holiday show with our friends from Original Murdick's Fudge, and more. We know how curious people are about what life is like on the island during the off-season. We know because we are also super interested in winter on Mackinac, we think it's the most incredible time to visit if you are able. Andrew Doud was born and raised on the island, and is now raising his three sons there, along with his wife Nicole. They talk about what that is like, plus what is happenig at Doud's Market, the oldest continuosly run, family owned grocery store in the country. Nicole shares that her charming little gift shop is open online year-round, and we think it's the prefect place to find unique gifts that fairly scream Michigan and Mackinac. Bobby Benser then joins John to talk all about how you can ship a taste of Michigan this holiday season direct from the island to practically anywhere. Original Murdick's is known for using all Pure Michigan ingredients, from sugar to butter, which all still gets delivered by horse drawn dray to the store every day. The fudge, and all the other goodies including peanut brittle and caramel corn, are made fresh every day by the talented team of fudge makers, and then shipped directly out, all in time for the holidays. We can't stress enough what an incredible gift this is, your friends and family will love it....and you.Our good friend Brian Bailey stops by and we always love to hear what he has to say. As the long-time general manager for multiple island properties, including the Lilac Tree Suites, Chippewa Hotel and the Pink Pony, he's got an awesome perspecitive on things on the island. He and his wife Jeri-Lyn live on the island year-round, and Brian discusses the fun that is the holiday bazaar, as well as other winter activities residents participate in. Finally, Susan Wilcox Olson from Grand Bay Promotions visits, she is also a long-time former resident of Mackinac, and tells us what she loves about the island. She also shares just how Murdick's produces all this fudge each year, and shrares the featured flavors for this year, including the very yummy maple fudge that Murdick's is highlighting this season to help shed light on our Northern Michigan maple syrup farmers who suffered devastating losses after the ice storm last year. This week we share some great holiday gifts you can give from the Mitten, because who wouldn't want a bit of Michigan this season? We visit with our good friend Charlie Olson from Grand Bay Promotions, who shares a few of his favorite Michigan-made gifts to give this season, including our favorite, Original Murdick's Fudge. Fun flavored oils and vinegars from Fustini's ship like a dream and can make anyone a chef. One very unique idea from Charlie? A round of golf at the historic Wawashtemo Golf Course on Mackinac Island where his dad Chuck is the golf pro. We'll talk to Mike Laing about this newly released wine, their CCS Cuvée 1. They describe it as a "love letter to Detroit art and the people who make it." This stunner of a sparkling wine from our friends at MAWBY Winery is as delicious as it is beautiful, and with a great story to boot. From Mawby:Born from a partnership with the College for Creative Studies, this bottle began in the classroom and took shape in our cellar. Students developed label concepts for a special-edition MAWBY sparkling wine, gaining real-world experience; the project also funds scholarships through CCS to support the next generation of artists. As makers, we've stood with the arts for more than 50 years, and we hope wine lovers and art lovers find common ground in this collaboration. The winning label by CCS student Olivia Plochocki captures a city in bloom. We followed its lead and finished this brut cuvée with a botanically inspired dosage. Using locally grown Yarrow, Lemon Verbena, and Elderflower, we built a balance of herbal, floral, and citrus aromas and flavors. On the nose: yarrow and lemon verbena mingle with undertones of elderflower and a hint of mint. The palate reflects those botanical notes, lifted by bright flavors of lime zest, muddled lemon, and Asian pear. A touch of white pepper adds gentle warmth, extending the finish and allowing the herbal character to pleasantly linger.Have you heard about the power of pie? It's a true story from our friends at Grand Traverse Pie Company. And as owner Mike Busley tells us, they make totally incredible pies, first and foremost. Using Pure Michigan ingredients, each pie is made by hand by their talented bakers for maximum delight. GT Pie is also all about what pie can do, whether it acts as a way for people to come together or as a vehicle to allow the Busley family to give back to our Michigan communities in so many ways. With multiple locations throughout Michigan, you can always just stop in to grab a pie, or a slice, to go. Also amazing? They'll ship these beauties to wherever you'd like them to go, so your friends and family can understand you when you say Michigan fruits make the best pies. This year, be sure to check out the chocolate bourbon pecan pie featuring Iron Fish Distillery, the perfect partnership of two awesome family-owned Michigan businesses. We hope that you'll choose Michigan this holiday season, and spread some Mitten love around.

We can't think of a better way to spend a sunny Monday than on a sand dune overlooking Lake Huron at Tawas Point State Park building a new boardwalk with a few of our tourism professional friends. We did just that a few days ago, and it was totally awesome. We bring you the story of Michigan Cares for Tourism on this episode of Behind the Mitten. Who better to kick off this show than with the founder of Michigan Cares for Tourism herself, Ms. Patty Click Janes. She shares her inspiriation for MCT, which has been working on projects around Michigan since 2013. The first "unified" effort for the tourism industry to give back, MCT has completed 68 different projects, involving almost 6,000 volunteers, saving the state $2 million dollars, and impacting over 9 million visitors to our state parks.Tawas State Park is one of Michigan's most unique state parks, residing on an ever shifting spit of sand fingered out into Lake Huron on the sunrise side of the state. Born and raised in Tawas, our next guest Micah Jordan now has his dream job as park supervisor. He shares what makes this park so special, and why he never wants to leave Tawas, and is beyond blessed to get to work here.Kelly Wolgamott, Vice President of Pure Michigan always has awesome recommendations on things to do and see, and she stops by to share a few suggestions for fall, focusing on the sunrise side of Michigan. From incredible fall colors, winding drives, and unexpected towns to explore, plan your next adventure at Michigan.org.Earlier this year we got to attend the unveiling of a beautiful new art exhibition that our friends in the Houghton Lake Area have been working on this summer. Located just next door to the Tawas region, Houghton Lake, St. Helen, Roscommon and the Higgins Lake are have tons of outdoor recreation to enjoy, from birding to boating. Vicky Barnes from the visitor's bureau, and a long time local, stops by to share her love of this community. We had the best time volunteering this year, and we recorded this show right in the middle of our busy day, you might even hear the hard work in our voices. Huge shout-out to Patty and her incredible team of volunteers, not only was this event incredibly well-organized, it was amazing to see the real time transformation of Tawas State Park before our eyes. So just where the heck is Mecosta County? Tune in to find out.You probably do know where Mecosta is, but not as a county. It's the home seat to Big Rapids, and to Ferris State University. We talk about both on this episode of Behind the Mitten, kicking off the show with the vivacious Dr. Bill Pink, President of Ferris State University. We always enjoy hearing what is new on campus, and we'll just say that Ferris does not disappoint. From exciting new buildings, including a unique gaming arena, to innovative majors that you won't find anywhere else, Ferris stands poised to create a great new generation of Michiganders. And did we mention that the Ferris State Bulldog's were the National Football D2 Champs last year? We didn't? Don't worry, Dr. Pink will.Next, we head to local icon Schuberg's restaurant for both burgers and great conversation. We meet Josh Pyles, local man about everything, who shares upcoming events from both Big Rapids Parks and Recreation and the downtown business association, because he works with both. He's really looking forward to October 25 for Fall Fest a family friendly event featuring inflatables, trunk-or-treating and more. Amanda Starkey and Jenifer Faris Jones from the Mecosta County Visitors Bureua stop by to talk fall with y'all. Turns out that Mecosta County is the perfect spot for gorgeous fall drives, whether you are in a car or on a motorcycle, which these two ladies are fans of and own and ride themselves. They share some of their favorite roads to travel, as well as why this community has had a hold on their hearts their wholes lives. Finally, we have two absolute Ferris firecrackers on, Amy Dorey, associate professor in Hospitality Management and Dr. Karyn Kio, also an associate professor in hospitality. We discuss why this major is so important to Michigan tourism, some of the innovative ways they engage their students, as well as their top spots to visit in Mecosta County. The Inn at Rustic Gate employs many Bulldogs in their hospitality journey, they both really like The Peaks at Canadian Lakes, and they give a super shoutout to the Big Rapids Culver's, where students go to learn systems that work. Thank you ladies for preparing our next generation of workers, they are in excellent hands.

This week we FIRE UP and head to Mt. Pleasant and Central Michigan University for fun things to do this fall in this vibrant college town located smack dab in the middle of Michigan. This is always a type of homecoming for host John Gonzalez, as he graduated from CMU, and is a memeber of their Journalism Hall of Fame. You'll hear all about it, including a few trips down memory lane, on this special show. Our friend Chris Rowley is the Executive Director of the Mt. Pleasant Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, and an expert on all things local for MP. Along with Jordan Ensing, Marketing Coordinator for the Bureau, she shares what makes this community special as well as fall activities. Insider tip: there is one last summer concert at Soaring Eagle Casino, Tim McGraw on September 26.Next, Gonzo got to meet and interview the brand new football coach for CMU, Coach Matt Drinkall, who joins us in Michigan direct from his last assignment as coach for the Army Black Knights. He is CMU's 30th head coach. He shares his insights for this season, as well as some of the very cool things this team is doing to reflect and honor the Native American heritage that is such a part of the Mt. Pleasant community, and this year will be reflected on the Chippewa's football uniforms. Coach also gives a shout-out to the Chip's of 1974, who were National Champs. Some people were clearly designed for thier careers, Gonzo is one, Marcie Otteman, Deputy Chief of Alumni and Constituent Engagement is another. This enthusiastic supporter, and CMU alumni 1987, shares all we can look forward to for CMU Homecoming 2025. There might also be reflecting on the good ole days at CMU, and the happy recognition that things are just getting better and better for the university. We recorded our show at a place that any CMU alumni knows well, O'Kelly's Sports Bar. We get to interview John Hunter, who's family has owned multiple establishments around Mt. Pleasant for decades. O'Kelly's, which is connected to sister business, and party palace, The Wayside, has been around for fifty years, and features all the college fun you could ever imagine. John shares why MP has been their community, and what makes working with CMU and students so great. Gonzo may or may not enjoy a very special, and very blue, drink from O'Kelly's during this segment. We just love these college town shows, especially in the fall, when the energy of fresh students on campus makes everyting incredible. A visit to Mt. Pleasant is perfect for this time of year.

This episode of Behind the Mitten finds us back in our second "home" of Gaylord Michigan, along with our co-host, and director of the Gaylord Tourism Bureau, Paul Beachnau. A regular on the show, and one of our best buddies, Paul takes around Gaylord, to spots both brand new, and old favorites. Come along as we go all outdoors, and a little bit inside, in Gaylord Michigan.Did you know that you can see elk literally right downtown Gaylord? It's a true story, and they've just built an awesome new viewing platform that you can get incredible vistas of these majestic animals that is located just minutes from I-75. Paul takes us on a tour, and record on-site. The elk herd in Gaylord is about 60 strong....and these animals, which can weigh upwards of 800 pounds and stand six feet tall, are particulary engaging.....or alarming....in the fall, when the bugling and rutting reaches a peak. Perfect time to stop by, or to do a deeper dive viewing the elk at the nearby Pigeon River State Forest. Where to find all the amazing elk in Gaylord Michigan, and how to view them best.Next, we hit the local disco where we find sparkling gems to dance the night away to. OK, that might be a stretch, but what we encountered was equally awesome...and sparkly. We catch up with regular Mark Copeland from Jay's Sporting Goods who always knows the coolest equipment, the best seasonal wear, and just what Michiganders need each season. We learn about the fascinating Yooperlites, those crazy glo-in-the-dark rocks that are causing obsessions around the state. Jay's has some super cool gear to help you find them, plus tons more for all your fall adventures. Next, another BTM regular, and great friend, Jordan Awrey comes back to chat about all things Snowbelt Brewing, where he is officially their marketing manager, and unofficially the "mayor" of Gaylord. Please don't be offended actual Mayor Todd, it's just that Jordan is such a great cheerleader of Gaylord, and turns that passion into action, in the form of their summer concert series and so much more. We always love to hear what Jordan has planned next, because it's honestly always amazing. Finally, a visit to Gaylord would NOT be complete without a visit to Michigan's Most Spectacular Resort, Treetops. We love using Treetops as a base for exploring Northern Michigan, we love joining friends at the resort for pizza in the pub, or for skiing or EXTREME tubing during the season. The fall, they are offering a series of Fall Progressive Dinners at Treetops that we would be beyond happy to attend. Book your tickets now, and you will be delighted not just by the seasonal menu, but also by the incredible autumnal views that you'll get to take in via your very own golf cart tour as you cruise the award-winning courses at Treetops while enjoying a cocktail and snacks. Then, converge at the top of the hill at Legends restaurant for a mulit-course meal. It's always a pleasure to get to go back to Muskegon, we just love this city located on the shores of Lake Michigan, and the very cool things that are happening here. On this episode of Behind the Mitten we'll introduce you to Skee town, and take you to cool places both old and new, hear all about one of the best Irish music festivals in the land, learn about a major art expansion, and eat some really good pizza. We kick off with the effusive Amber Mae Petersen, Marketing and Operations Manager for Visit Muskegon and her co-hort Lashelle Mikesell, Digital Marketing Coordinator. They give us a great overview of downtown, and the many nice changes that have been happening here, from businesses moving locations, to new ones opening up. One thing we mention is the beautiful Frauenthal Center, where they host the magical Singing Christmas Tree every year, plan ahead and get those tickets early. One of the largest, and best, Irish musical festivals in the country has happened for the last 25 years in Muskegon. The Michigan Irish Music Festival is happening September 11 through the 14th, and we have Morgan Witmer, the volunteer marketing coordinator for the festival on to tell us all about it. We were excited to learn that new this year there will be a Ceili (KAY-lee), which is a special Irish square dance that anyone can participate in. Organizers are pumped that on Saturday night, Skerryvore, a band from Scotland is coming for the first time. I'm excited to check out the Celtic Canines exhibit on Sunday, where I can meet (and pet!) all the breeds of traditional Irish dogs. There is also a cool Irish Instrument petting zoo on Sunday that sounds incredibly interesting. There are all sorts of Irish culture, food and drink classes as well, please be sure to register ahead of time. We have to give a shout-out to all everyone who gives thier time to this amazing event, it is entirely volunteer run. We've learned over the years that sometimes everyting just comes together, whether you planned it or not, and our time in Muskegon proved this once again. While recording at the new CORE Plaza, we realized that our friends from the Muskegon Museum of Art were also in the house. So, we invited Kirk Hallman, the Executive Director, and Cathy Mott, Assistant Director to join us and give us an update on their major expansion. We had them on last year, so it was nice to hear that it has been an incredible journey, and that all of Michigan is lucky to have this resource. The CORE Plaza is a lovely new spot for Muskegon, and has the feel of a place you might find in a much larger city. Co-owner Troy Wasserman joins us to share how this historic building remodel came to be, shares the businesses that call CORE home, including the very fun Liquid Assests Bar that runs all down one side, and talks about his family's long history in Muskegon. Stop by for lunch, or a meeting, or happy hour, or a hair cut.....CORE Plaza is a hot spot of activity, much like Muskegon.www.facebook.com/behindthemittenhttpswww.instagram.com/behindthemitten_twitter.com/BehindTheMitten#BTM #amyandgonzo #BehindtheMitten And you can find all sorts of things on our website, https://www.amyandgonzo.com/
